Early Childhood Care Development and Education: Impact, Challenges and Prospects in Nigeria
Get PDFEarly childhood care development and education is an early interventionprogramme that helps detect problems that might inhibit the growth andsurvival of the child by nurturing and providing basic skills and ingredientsneeded for over all development. This paper presents a conceptual framework of early childhood care development and education and the under lyingphilosophy asstated in the policy documents. It further examined theimpacts, challenges and future prospects of early childhood care andeducation programmes in Nigeria. It recommended that, recruitment ofprofessional care givers, adopting baseline assessment and sensitizationfor stakeholders, providing reliable statistical data and figure, creating achild friendly environment, proper funding, monitoring and evaluation amongothers, will go a long way towards actualizing the lofty dream of earlychildhood programmes as a basic component of the on-going universal basiceducation scheme in Nigeria. 
Gender Effect of Simplex and Apcaw Strategy in Fostering Business Creativity Competence of Managers in Selected ICT Companies in Lagos State, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study investigated the gender effect of SIMPLEX and Akinboye PracticalCreativity at Work (APCAW) strategy in fostering business creativitycompetence of managers in Information Communication and Technologyindustry (ICT) in Lagos. The study adopted the pre-test, post-test, controlgroup, experimental design using a 3x3x2 factorial design matrix. A sampleof 126 managers drawn from three (ICT) companies was used for the study.The Schutte, Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, Golden (1998) emotionalIntelligence Assessment Scale was used to select and categorize subjectson levels of emotional intelligence based on their scores on the scale. Eachgroup consists of 42 subjects (21 male and 21 female managers). Theexperimental groups were exposed to six weeks of business creativitytraining while the control group was given training not related to creativity.The business creativity competence of managers were measured usingIbadan Creativity Assessment Scale (ICAS).Three hypotheses were testedand the data were analyzed using Analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA). Findings from the study revealed that treated participants’ were significantlysuperior to control on business creativity competence (F(2,107)=27.325;p<0.01).Findings also showed that there were no significant effects of gender (F(2,107)=.351;>0.05); and no significant two-way interaction effect of treatmentand gender (F(2,107)=.256;P>0.05) on participants’ business creativitycompetence. Based on the result of the study, it was therefore recommendedthat SIMPLEX and APCAW strategy could be used to foster the businesscreativity competence of managers irrespective of gender
Effect of Material Facilities on Childhood Education in Primary Schools of Oyo State
Get PDFThis paper investigated the effect of material facilities on childhoodeducation among primary schools in Idi-Ayunre in Oluyole Local Governmentarea of Oyo state. The research design adopted for this study was the expostfacto research design. The study adopted survey method in form ofadministering copies of structured questionnaire to randomly selectedrespondent. The participants for the study consisted of 150 primary schoolstudents (97 males, 53 females), and 50 teachers randomly drawn from five(5) primary schools in Idi-Ayunre in Oluyole Local Government Area of OyoState. The participants responded to a self-constructed questionnaire titled“influence of material facilities on childhood education questionnaire” toelicit information on material facilities and childhood education. The datagenerated were subjected to descriptive analysis using simple percentileand chi-square test of association. The Chi-square value obtained is 35.465,df=12, at p=0. 000. Since the p-value is less than .05, the stated nullhypothesis is therefore rejected. This result revealed that material facilitiesare inadequately available for primary school pupils, and majority of thesefacilities are in manageable condition. It was revealed that material facilitiesdo influence childhood education. Since material facilities are not madeavailable to pupils in the area of study then the government and thecommunity should work together to improved adequate facilities for thechildhood education in rural Primary schools
Stakeholders’ Perception of Access to and Credibility of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Integration into Distance Learning in Nigeria
Get PDFInformation and Communication Technologies (ICT) have transformeddistance learning by expanding and widening its access to education,improving quality, reducing the cost and establishing its credibility. This is,however, observed that not many nations, especially in the developing world,have accepted this technological innovation. The study investigatedstakeholders’ perception of access to and credibility of ICT integration intodistance learning in Nigeria. The research was descriptive in nature, usingthe survey method. The sample was drawn from one single and four dualmode universities. Respondent were 897 open and distance learningstakeholders, 366 were males and 531 were females, 195 from single modeand 670 from dual mode institutions and 32 were categorized as others.Two research questions and four research hypothesis were formulated forthe study. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data. Scheffe’s post hoc analysis was also used to further analyze test. It istherefore found out that there was a significant difference among thestakeholders in their perception of access to ICT in distance learning. Therewas also a significant difference among the stakeholders on their credibilityof ICT integration for distance learning. It is therefore recommended amongothers that distance learning programme should be designed to accommodatethe integration and utilization of ICT facilities, distance learning stakeholdersshould imbibe high positive attitudes and competencies in the utilizationof ICT facilities
Effect of Digital Feedback on the Psychological Profile and Performance of Selected Amateur Soccer Players in Ibadan, Oyo State
Get PDFThe study investigated the impact of digital feedback on the psychologicalprofile and performance of selected amateur soccer players in Ibadan, OyoState. Related studies and variable-relevant theories were spirally reviewed.Two hypotheses were tested. The two-group pre-test and post-test researchdesign was used for the study. Twenty-two (22) amateur soccer players wereselected from two amateur soccer clubs in Ibadan using the purposivesampling technique. A standardized 20-item version of SPQ-Factor 20questionnaire was used for data collection. t-test statistical tool was usedto test the hypotheses at 0.05 significant level. The variables of videovisualization had significant effect on the psychological profile andperformance of the selected amateur soccer players (t =3.39; P< 0.05). Itwas concluded that video-visualization is important in the preparation ofsoccer players for matches and it was recommended that digital feedbackshould form an integral part of soccer players’ preparation for matche
Students Perception of Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities Strike Actions on their Academic Performance at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study investigated the perception of University of Ibadan Students onthe effect of Academic Staff Union of Nigerian University (ASUU) Strikes ontheir academic performance. The survey research design was adopted usingthe multi-stage sampling procedure to select five faculties: Law, Pharmacy,Clinical Science, Agriculture and Technology and 376 final year students assample. One research question and hypothesis guided the study. ASUUstrikes and Students Perception on their Academic PerformanceQuestionnaire (ASUUSSPAPQ) with ‘r=0.80’ using the cronbach alphaelicited data for the study. Data was analysed using descriptive statisticsand t-test at p<0.005. ASUU strikes distort academic calendar at theuniversity of Ibadan with SD = 0.092 (high), leads to students involvementin crimes SD = 0.97 (high), unbeneficial to students academics SD = 0.670 (medium). A non-significant relationship existed among genderopinions at (F= 0.070) t-0.265; p< 0.05 on ASUU strikes. The study recommendedthat government should employ prompt dialogue to prevent disruption andtotal breakdown of the educational system, members and the executives ofASUU should employ other industrial dispute resolution strategies thanindefinite strike actions which obviously paralyses student’s academics.

Get PDFThis paper focuses on the management of Bendel Insurance Football Club,Benin City. It examines the reasons for the poor performance of the Club,since 2008, when it was relegated to National League till date (2014). Theproblem has been lack of government attention to the football club, whichled to the dwindling fortunes of the club. The objective of this study was toidentify the factors responsible for the poor performance of the club andmake recommendations that would improve and strengthen the club. Thestudy is a survey research and adopted the use of convenience randomsampling involving the subordinate staff, current players, former (old) playersand coaches. Data collection were from primary and secondary sources.And the methods of data analysis were the simple percentage and chi square. The research found out that the welfare of the players was completelyneglect; that there was no provision for camping facilities; that there waspoor human resources management, absence of business-like managersand, above all, poor funding. In conclusion, this paper recommends thecoordination of the organization’s resources through the process of effectivemanagement in terms of provision of adequate funds, provision andimprovement of camping facilities, recruitment of good players yearlywithout bias to strengthen the team, the complete and regular payment ofthe benefit and entitlement of players
Viewing Service Learning in Basic Education Curriculum through Gender Lens
Get PDFTypically, functional and relevant educational practices are the thrust oflearning experiences that are service-oriented. Service-learning shapes thethinking and demeanour of the girl-learner to become more concerned withroots of social issues and concerns. Service-learning also helps the girllearner to become more proactive and pragmatic in resolving humanchallenges. Through the process of service-learning, the girl-child’s valuesand subsequent life choices are positively altered. When the girl-child isgiven educational opportunity which empowers her to use her skills andknowledge in real-life situations, learning extends beyond the classroominto the community. Service-learning gives the girl-child authenticeducational experiences and enables her develop empathy for others. Thus,integrating service-learning into pedagogical services delivery will go a longway in developing and enhancing creativity in the girl-child and will alsohave positive influence on overall development of the nation. The paperconcludes by recommending among other things that service-learning beintegrated into the curriculum and that pupils, especially the females shouldbe exposed to service-learning right from the home and the elementaryschool
Effect of Discussion and Invention Teaching Strategies on Senior Secondary School Students Achievement in Chemistry in Delta State, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study investigated the effect of Discussion and Invention Strategies onachievement in chemistry. The moderating effects of academic ability andgender were also investigated. The study adopted a pretest, posttest, followup test, and control group quasi-experimental design with a 3x2x2 factorialmatrix. The participants consisted of 224 senior secondary II chemistrystudents from intact classes in nine selected secondary schools in deltacentral senatorial district. The instrument for data collection include“Chemistry achievement test”, (r = 0.84), “Ability test in Chemistry”, (r =0.85) and teachers instructional package. Six research questions were askedand answered, while three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05alpha levels. Data were analysed using analysis of variance and covariance,while Sheffe Post-hoc analysis was used to explain the significant difference.There were significant effects of treatment on students achievement inchemistry (F (2.820) = 73.77) and students of varying abilities (F(11.242) =2.03). But, there were no significant effect of treatment on Gender onachievement (F (1.000) = 0.93) in Chemistry. The two instructional strategiesimproved students’ achievement in chemistry concepts more than thetraditional lecture method. It was recommended that teachers shouldtherefore adopt these two instructional strategies in the teaching of chemistryat the senior secondary school level
Religious Issues and Foreign Language Learning in Nigeria: A Matter of Politics or Policies?
Get PDFThis paper tends in the first instance, to look critically at the issue of religion,then other issues like: attitude of teachers, parents and students as theyaffect foreign language learning before looking at politics and governmentpolicies as factors that mar or make the teaching/learning of foreign languagein Nigeria.This is because, when it comes to foreign language learning, especiallyFrench and Arabic in Nigeria, issues abound; as a matter of fact, mostNigerian students are almost already divided along Christian and Islamicreligion lines. Some believing that French language is meant for theChristians while others are of the opinion that its Arabic counterpart shouldbe for the Muslims.As a form of conclusion, answers were provided to the question ofweather if it is politics or policies all in a bid to lay to rest, the popular anderroneous bone of contention that a particular language belongs to aparticular religion.
