Grammatical Rift and Cultural Lacuna: Constraints on English-Hausa and Hausa-English Translation
Get PDFThe issue of translation is an important aspect of interaction and communication. Since societies, cultures and languages are not the same, there is the need for effective and efficienttranslation so as to successfully achieve the desired objective of communication. This is with the view to bridging the communication barrier through translation. But this translation is shrouded with multiple complexities across languages. Some of the challenges are associated with the grammar and its cultural manifestations. This paper attempts an in-depth analysis of Hausa–English and English–Hausa translation of some concepts and terminologies with the view to demonstrating the difficulties in direct translation. The paper centers on International Media dealing with Hausa-English, English-Hausa translations, specifically, BBC, VOA, and related international broadcasting corporations and National dailies. This is further corroborated with field work on special vocabularies of Hausa figures of speech, proverbs; praise-epithet was carried out, particularly across Hausa popular culture
National Insecurity and Economic Growth in Nigeria
Get PDFNigeria is one of the relatively secured nations in West African sub-region. In recent times, this endowed nation suddenly metamorphosed into abode of serial bombing, hostage taking, armed robbery, cold-blooded killings and ethno-religious conflicts traceable to militant groups with conflicting ideological, political and religious agenda. The resultant loss of lives, rising budgetary spending for security and destruction of valuable government facilities portend devastating consequences for sustainable economic development in the country. This study examined the link between national security and economic growth in Nigeria. The researcher adopted econometric method, which entailed extraction of secondary data from the publications of Central Bank of Nigeria, National Bureau of Statistics and other reliable reports on the subject spanning between 1985 and 2015. The generated data were carefully analysed using Ordinary least square multiple regression and inferential statistics on the basis of which farreaching conclusions were drawn. The research findings indicated that Nigeria‘s expenditure on national security is rising faster than spending on education and other critical sectors and that capital, labour and government expenditure on security are positively related to GDP while government expenditure on education is inversely related to GDP. This unpleasant finding has negative effect on sustainable economic development in Nigeria. The paper recommended that priority attention should be placed on good governance with a robust institutional framework that ensures prudent and effective management of resources to better thelot of its citizenry while the government should build strong viable institutions that can proactively respond to the challenges of security.

Relationship between Management Control Technique and Academic Staff Effectiveness
Get PDFThis study investigated management control techniques and academic staff effectiveness in south-west Nigeria Universities. The success or failure of any institution lies exclusively on the effectiveness of its academic staff which is dependent on the type of management control technique being used by the management. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive survey. The population for this study comprised 30 universities in Southern Nigeria out of which 9 Universities were selected using stratified random sampling technique. A total of 81 members of management staff were selected for the study. Also a total of 1,556 lecturers were selected using Krejcie and Morgan table of required sample size from the selected Universities in south-west Nigeria. Frequency counts, percentage and mean rating were used to answer the research questions while Pearson product moment correlation was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance.The reliability co-efficient obtained were .63 and .68 for MCTQ and ASEQ respectively.The findings revealed that management control techniques is related to Academic Staff Effectiveness in Universities in south-west Nigeria, the calculated pvalue (.000) is less than the set p-value (0.05) for 1549 degrees of freedom. The study recommended that in order to have high level of academic staff effectiveness in south-west universities, the management team should explore more of other control techniques known to be effective in university management such as financial control and quality control techniques. 
Relationship between Students’ Satisfaction and Perceived Relevance of the Business Education Programme to Entrepreneurial Skills in Lagos State Colleges of Education
Get PDFThis study was carried out to investigate the Relationship between Students‘ Satisfaction and Perceived Relevance of the Business Education Programme to Entrepreneurial Skills in Lagos State Colleges of Education. A sample of 300 students was drawn from 3 sampled schools. Data were generated through the use of questionnaire using sample survey design. Three research questions were drawn and three hypotheses were formulated. Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient Statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance to test the hypotheses while simple percentages were used for the research questions. Communication skill was perceived to be the most entrepreneurial skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur SD = (0.941). Among others, the result revealed that there was significant relationship between the acquired skills in business education and entrepreneurial skills required by the business world (P>0.05). Also there was a significant relationship between students level of satisfaction with the skills acquired in business education and their intention for self-employment (P>0.05) .The findings included the fact that most students were satisfied with the skills acquired in business education. It was recommended that government should establish more Business Education laboratories for effective teaching and learning of practical skills that will enhance entrepreneurial empowerment.
