    Get PDF
Didactics is used in schools to analyze learning situations and to use theanalysis to determine and justify how teaching is conducted. A didacticevaluation of the teaching and learning of science subjects in thesecondary schools has been a challenge to educators in the Niger Deltaregion as a result of militancy. This paper examines didactic models inthe answering of the four didactic consideration questions of: what shouldbe taught; why should it be taught; how should it be taught; to whomshould it be taught. This is pertinent as the yardstick for the usability ofdidactic theory of knowledge is successful teaching; also this area hasonly been investigated to a limited extent, especially from difficultcircumstances like militancy

    Get PDF
It is a fact that education is an impeccable instrument for the development of the potentialities of a nation which would ultimately bring about national development by way of combating poverty, illiteracy, diseases and other social and economic problems. This paper thus acknowledges the imperativeness of access, equity and quality education towards national development. It emphasizes the tripod of access, equity and quality education as a catalyst for sustainable national development. It points out that although Nigerian governments have been making frantic efforts towards enhanced access, equity and quality education, challenges such as inadequate carrying capacity, poor socio-economic background, inadequate public financing, among others, have been major constraints. To tackle these identified challenges and enhance national development, it is suggested that the need for improved funding and equitable access to quality education should be guaranteed for all citizens, and transparent and effective monitoring of educational system should be ensured to enhance quality education among others

Past and Contemporary Issues of Power and Electricity Supply in Nigeria: Implications for Sustainable Community and National Development

    Get PDF
After over $20 billion dollars of spending in about two decades, Nigeria remains embarrassingly stagnated with only about 5,000 MW of power generation capacity. Nigerians have become so critical of the governments. The objective of this work is to identify the contemporary challenges and make recommendations for sustainable energy and power for sustainable growth and development. The sector is bedeviled with a number of challenges: Security of gas transportation and sabotage; time lag for completion of large projects; sabotage of generation, distribution and transmission equipment coupled with intractable labour crisis; and government policies, programmes and political will. There is multiplicity of potential for energy mix that can be explored and harnessed to improve the energy sources: Natural gas, hydro, coal, wind, solar and bio. It is suggested that any solution that will be long lasting and sustainable must, of necessity, address: the unalloyed political will in the political party and the governance; inclusion of a portfolio of short term projects that will deliver tangible results in a timely manner; resolution of satisfactory and equitable concerns of all stakeholders in the sector; adoption of strategies that will effectively mitigate all forms of sabotage; creation of a platform for system-wide infrastructure development in ancillary sectors; harnessing energy mix as the immediate environment can provide and support; and direct facilitation of economic multiplier effects and job creation. There must be education of members of the public, Genco and Disco staff on the ethics of the job, and safety and security in the industry

One of the several purposes of education is the acquisition of knowledge required to refine man in terms of behaviour and attitudes.Educational process has as one of its focuses, the affective domain, which is expected to influence man?s attitudes, behaviour and character. Several works had been carried out on attitudes of man but not many had been done in the aspect of human nature as a factor that can influence moral behaviours. Philosophy comes handy in the inculcation of right moral actions as its component of axiology, through the aspect of ethics, encourages cultivation of right and good attitudes in interpersonal relations to guarantee security and development of the society. In ensuring this, understanding the nature of man as one of the contents of Philosophy of Education becomes expedient in order to find out good approaches by which the process of education can build right moral attitudes and actions in man for the purpose of securing and developing the society. This paper attempts to examine in a philosophical discourse, the place of human nature in cultivating right moral attitudes. It discusses concepts like hedonism, rationalism and virtue. This isto justify the essence of educational process as an instrument per excellence to achieve security and development aspirations of the society. The paper recommends among several others the need to structure contents of each lesson in the classrooms towards acquisition of appropriate social values and virtues that can enable learners become rational in their decision making. It also suggested that a philosophical understanding of the nature of man will enable teachers as well as school counsellors to be more effective in their professional responsibilities. The paper concludes by stating that an understanding of the nature of man and its philosophical implications will enable educators practice their profession efficiently to attain society?s desired goals of secured and developed environmen

The paper examined the states of western education, levels oftechnological readiness and innovation capacities in Ghana and Nigeria,in conjunction with the abilities of the two countries’ to achieve theirgoal of becoming one of the foremost twenty economies in the world. The findings showed that differences in country’s global competitivenessappear to have reflected the differential education, technology andinnovation policy thrusts in Ghana and Nigeria. Moreover, unlike inNigeria, where priority was narrowly on macroeconomic and marketefficiency, Ghana did broadly prioritized infrastructural and institutionaldeficits without neglecting development of education, technology andinnovation. Thus, inclusive and quality investment in human, managerialand knowledge capital in addition to the development of physical capitaland pursuance of market efficiency is a worthwhile development strategythat both countries, especially Nigeria should adopt in a strategic manner.&nbsp

Investigation of Proficiency in Supportive Mathematics Topics among Senior Secondary Science Students in Rivers State

    Get PDF
Supportive mathematics topics are those mathematics topics, learned earlier by senior secondary two (SS II) science students, that can help them succeed in their science subjects and courses. Studies revealed that secondary students have poor mathematical skills. This study therefore investigated students’ proficiency in some supportive mathematics topics as it relates to their gender and the location of their schools. Descriptive research design was adopted. Simple random sampling and stratified sampling were used to select1652 students from 15 rural and 15 urban coeducational public secondary schools in Rivers State. Supportive mathematics Test (r=0.80) was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and t-test were used to analyse the data at 5%level of significance. The result revealed that the highest mean score in supportive mathematics topics was in Decimal Fraction and Approximation (? =42.65)        which is below average, meaning that, their performance in supportive mathematics was poor. There was no significant difference between the mean proficiency scores of male and female students in all the supportive mathematics topics (p>0.05). The mean proficiency scores better than that of rural students. It was recommended among others that students should take their mathematics lessons seriously at all levels of education because the proficiency they acquire from their junior mathematics classes may positively or negatively influence their success in most science subjects and even science courses in higher institutions. of supportive mathematics topics of urban students were significantl

Parenting and Child Development: A Comparison of Yoruba Parenting and Pauline Concept of Child Rearing in Ephesians 6:4

    Get PDF
The importance of children in any society cannot be overemphasized. This is why they arehighly desired and valued in every home and culture particularly among the Jews and theYoruba of south west Nigeria. Their presence signals hope and future for the family, churchand the society at large. Yoruba and Pauline concepts of parenting and child developmentclearly pointed out that there are a lot of similarities between the two worlds. There has beena remarkable paradigm shift from what parenting used to be and what it is now. Both Yorubaand Pauline ideas are at variance with the attitude of many parents in the society today.Children, in most cases, are seen as weak, ignorant, foolish and thereby deserve little or norecognition. This attitude of neglect actually calls for concern. The paper examines the conceptof parenting as practiced by the Yoruba people of western Nigeria. Similarly, it also surveys thePauline concept of child rearing as encapsulated in Ephesians 6:4. As a contextual study, thepaper correlates the biblical perspective with the contemporary realities in the Yoruba landand Africa at large. The paper also highlights the elements of contextual connectivity betweenthe parenting in Paul’s world and the African view vis-à-vis the Nigerian situation. Consequently,Inferences are drawn from the Biblical and the Yoruba principles of child rearing for thepurpose of bringing up total children that will become leaders tomorrow

The attitudes, interests, self-concepts and factors such as anxiety and frustration all of which influence and interact with student?s motivation and which they carry to mathematics lessons affect the way they feel about mathematics. Most of these factors are either acquired by students while at the primary school levels or at home from their parents or siblings or from their seniors who had bad experiences from their mathematics teachers. This study looked at the paradigm shift in attitudes towards mathematics achievement of students in some selected secondary schools in Ogun and Oyo states with a view to ascertain which of the seven categories of these shifts are significant. Descriptive survey design was used with simple random sampling technique in getting the population of 183 students comprising 100 from Ogun States and 83 from Oyo state. Simple percentages and correlation statistics were used to analyse the data. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between how students explore other areas in problem solving in mathematics (0.74) and their confidence (0.68) followed by dependence on procedures (0.54) to how they perceive mathematics to the real world and its usefulness to them (0.48). It is recommended that teachers and mathematics educators should pay serious attention to attitudinal shifts of students in these areas in order to help them achieve better in mathematics. The teacher should motivate and employ other methods of catching the attention of students using various means like story telling, folklores, use of local materials in the students? environment and examples of mathematicians who are excelling in their chosen careers both locally and internationally to teach the subject to students

The focus of this study was to determine the relationship between security personnel training, compensation and environmental security in Universities in Oyo State. The sample for the study comprised of thirty six security personnel respectively across three tertiary institutions in Oyo State; University of Ibadan, Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso and Lead City University out of the four institutions in Oyo State (University of Ibadan, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Lead City University, Ibadan, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo,).The data collected was used to test two hypotheses, the descriptive statistics was used. The compensation-environmental security personnel training questionnaire was used for the study (CESPT) r = 0.821. Hypothesis one showed that r = (0.074), p<.05. Since p< 0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected and therefore conclude that there is a significant relationship between training of security personnel and the environmental security of Universities in Oyo State.Hypothesis two showed that r = (-0.038), p<.05 (0.035). Since p< 0.05, null hypothesis was rejected and therefore conclude that there is a significant relationship between compensation of security personnel and the environmental security of Universities in Oyo State. It is therefore recommended that security personnel should undergo regular trainings and they should be better compensated as this will encourage them to be hard working.&nbsp

Age, Gender and Dispositional Greed as Psycho-social Correlates of Financial Risk Tolerance

    Get PDF
This study was aimed at understanding how psycho-social factors predict financial risk tolerance. The study adopted a cross-sectional design and a convenience sampling technique on a sample of Nigerian undergraduates drawn from the Department of Psychology of the University of Lagos. Participants were administered questionnaire containing demographic questions such as age and gender; Dispositional Greed Scale (DGS) for evaluation of greedy behaviour and the Grable-Lytton Risk Tolerance Scale (GL-RTS) for financial risk tolerance assessment. First, we explored how age is related to financial risk tolerance. Second, we analyzed the gender difference in financial risk taking and finally, we analyzed how dispositional greed is associated with financial risk tolerance. Results showed no significant relationship between age and financial risk taking (p >.05), no gender difference in financial risk tolerance (p >.05) and no significant relationship between dispositional greed and financial risk tolerance (p >.05). Additionally, the interaction effect of age and gender failed to predict financial risk tolerance (p >.05). The results suggest that understanding financial risk tolerance is a complex process that goes beyond the exclusive use of psycho-social factors such as age, gender and dispositional greed; thus, these factors should be used with caution by financial planners when assessing investors? risk tolerance
