Construction industry presents an attractive market for the use of non-biodegradable materials, because one of the principal components ofconstruction is concrete, due to its high compressive strength. Incorporatingwaste glass as coarse aggregate in structural concrete has the potential tonot only produce environmental benefits in the reduction of landfill, but toalso reduce costs for university building in Nigeria. This paper described theinfluence of coarse glass on the fresh, hardened properties of concrete andcompare to the control (0%) and the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)with Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Coarse aggregate (gavel) waspartial replacement with coarse glass aggregates at 5%, 10%, 15% and20%. Tests are conducted in compliance with British Standard (BS). Mixratio 1:2.5:3.5 (cement: fine aggregate: coarse aggregate) was used with0.50 water/cement ratio to produce grade 25 concrete at 28 days. Resultsshowed that slump decreases with increase in coarse glass. 10% partialreplacement has good compression of 31.18 N/mm2after 28 days and SEManalysis showed he portion of cracking and bonding effect which denoted theexistence of Calcium Silicate Hydrates (C-S-H gel) and Calcium Hydroxide(CH). Therefore, glasscrete showed potential for becoming an additionalsustainable solution for waste recycling

The objective of the study was to develop an improved artisan’s fish smoking machine (IAFSM) with micro environment type of smoking chamber for fish smoking and incorporated a sawdust stove with inlet vents to produce hot and non-dense smoke under natural influence at high temperature and velocity. A wooden frame was developed according to the required dimensions; internalwalls were nailed to the frame from inside; the internal walls were made of stainless metal sheets that were cut into required sizes. Thin layer of dried and powdery red clay soil was formed within the thickness of the wall frame after some quantity of the material was poured, and a thick layer of cotton wool was placed on it thereafter, plywood was fixed to the frame from outside to cover these lagging materials. These sets of activities were repeated for the remaining three sides including the door, top and the lowest flat parts of the machine. The dried sawdust was compressed in the IAFSM’s stove with the volume 1.25 × 108 mm3, flux guide, and a fire screen. An outlet vent is located at the top of the machine. When the compressed dried sawdust was ignited with dried pieces of paper when the door was closed; the fuel burns under natural influence without the use of fan in any form. The exhausted flux escaped via the outlet vent and away from the artisans, as soon as, its cooks the fish. A hot and non - densed smoke generator has been developedto smoke fish at a cheaper and faster rate with heat energy and non - densed smoke delivered to the fish at the rate between 86.9 J/S and 92 J/S from the heat energy delivered to the smoking chamber at a rate between 108.6 J/S and 127.8 J/S. Satisfactory taste reports were received after the interview granted by the 20 members of the public randomly selected and served with the samples of the smoked fish. The developed mechanical aid: Is environmentally friendly; Uses coal or similar fuel material that can smoulders;and Smokes fish faster than any devices in the existing literature, less than an hour, with significant moisture loss

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the pivotal role of parental guidance in shaping Nigeria\u27s sociocultural landscape and explores the effects of parental failure on youth behaviour, societal values, and national development. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, the study examines the narratives and lived experiences of Nigerian families, drawing from extensive literature reviews, case studies, and cultural analyses. Grounded in Attachment Theory, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of how parenting impacts societal outcomes. The findings highlight that parental failure manifests in various forms, including lack of supervision and engagement, cultural and economic pressures, negligence of parental responsibilities, and deficiencies in educational background. In this context, parental failure refers to the inability or unwillingness of parents to adequately nurture, guide, and provide for theirchildren, resulting in a range of negative outcomes for individuals and society. These manifestations contribute to widespread social issues such as juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and the erosion of ethical values. The study underscores the importance of addressing parental failure as a catalyst for sociocultural transformation in Nigeria, arguing that a more cohesive and progressive society can be cultivated by empowering parents and tackling the root causes of parental failure through collaborative efforts from government, NGOs, and community leaders. Key recommendations include implementing parental education programs to equip parents with effective parenting skills, establishing economic support systems to alleviate financial burdens, and promoting cultural reorientation to encourage active and engaged parenting
