The study investigates the impact level of staff development by the Teacher Registration and Certification Board (TTRCB) on the effective management of public primary schools in Bayelsa State. Four research questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the purpose of the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 34% of the total population of 356 public primary school teachers who had been re-trained by TTRCB between 2018 and 2022. Two self-designed instruments by the researchers which were validated and pilot tested were used to collect relevant data for the study. The first instrument was titled: Impact level of Teacher Development Programme on School Effectiveness Questionnaire (ILTDPSEQ). It was designed on a four-point scale of very high (VH), High (H), Low (L) and Very Low (VL) to elicit responses from the samples teachers. The second instrument titled: Level of Re – trained Teachers Job Performance Questionnaire (LRTJPQ) was used to collect data from school heads. It was a four-point Likert scale instrument. The reliability score values of the two instruments were 0.72 and 0.80 respectively. The collected data were analysed using mean, standard deviation, percentage and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistics. Findings of  the study showed that the training teachers had under the TTRCB staff development programme has significant impact on teachers in the effective management of public primary secondary schools; it was also found that teachers encountered some challenges during training programme which could compromise the expected level of impact of staff continuous professional development on their effectiveness in the management of schools in Bayelsa State. It was therefore recommended that the state government should increase her financial allocation to TTRCB while efforts should be made to approach international bodies and multinational oil companies for financial support. It was also recommended that the timing of the teachers development programme by TTRCB should be during holidays so that pupil’s academic activities will not be disrupted amongst others

Students’ academic performance is of very critical importance to parents, guardians, as well as other significant stakeholders. Among other factors, Social Support has been identified as a key variable influencing the academic performance of students. This study examined the relationship between Social Support and academic performance among undergraduate students of Madonna University. 270 students, selected through convenience sampling method participated in the study. It was hypothesised that Social Support would be significantly and positively related to academic performance. The Social Support variable was measured using the Social Support Behavior (SSB) Scale by Vaux et al. (1987); while the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) was used to measure the academic performance of students. Correlation analysis was carried out to measure the relationship between Social Support and academic performance. Results of correlation analysis indicated that there was a positive significant relationship between Social Support and academic performance (r = 0.88). This result validates the positive linear relationship between Social Support and academic performance. In other words, the higher the Social Support availed and accessed, the higher the quality of academic performance delivered. The findings of this study will be of immense utility to parents, guardians, educators, counselors, and significant others, in the development of strategies, for the facilitation and sustenance of enhanced academic performance of students

Relaxation Techniques on Athletes’ Performance in Sports: An Overview

    Get PDF
Sport is characterised by both positive and negative emotions, which can harm athlete’s performance. Emotions such as stress, anxiety, anger, even excitement can impact their performance. Sometimes athletes get tensed-up such that it prevents them from performing their best at crucial times. Also, success in sports is determined partly by physical conditioning, skill and preparation but it is also influenced by psychological factors such as self-confidence, motivation, concentration and emotional control. When two athletes of equal and often unequal ability compete, the athlete with mental edge most often emerges as the winner. Athletes can achieve this edge with the use of mental skills training. One of these mental skills training is a relaxation technique. Relaxation can be defined as a psychological strategy used by sports performers to help manage or reduce stress-related emotions (for instance anxiety and anger) and physical symptoms (for example physical tension and increased heart rate) during high pressurized situations. There are many types of research indicating that relaxation technique benefits athletes by enhancing self-confidence, concentration, performance, reducing anxiety and stress, blood pressure as well as muscle tense. Relaxation can be done individually or in a group. It is the focus of this paper to examine the influence of relaxation techniques on athlete’s performance in sports. Also, different types of relaxation techniques are discussed all of which, can be used to help the athlete relax and perform optimally in their sports.&nbsp

Implication of Collateral in MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise): Financing in Nigeria

    No full text
This study explores the effects of collateral on MSMEs’ access to credit from the financial institutions (Commercial Banks and Microfinance Bank), using a questionnaire survey method and in-depth interview. The survey revealed that collateral was a huge constraint to accessing finance with 45% (192 out of 418) of the firms surveyed revealing that collateral pledging has denied them access to debt financing from the banking institutions. In the light of this finding, it is therefore imperative to give attention to the alternative to collateral such as leasing, invoice financing and factoring, agent banking, relationship-based lending, group lending, credit guarantee scheme lending and cash-flow lending as it would go a long way to reduce the financing problem for MSMEs. It is important to mention that this study is part of a PhD thesis at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and it is online.&nbsp
