    Get PDF
This paper discussed sustainable food security in Nigeria through farmers\u27 involvement in healthy and environmental best practices. Farmers\u27 health directly correlates with productivity which results in food sufficiency and security. Engaging in healthy and environmental best practices improves health and supports farmers to stay healthy, enhances their attendance as well as productivity at work. This paper noted that one of the factors that cause unproductivity at work is ill-health; ill-health can result in presenteeism (workers who are physically present at work but not performing at their best); and absenteeism (workers not being present at work at all). The paper further argued that farmers\u27 ill-health if not properly managed can result to food insecurity. To avert the incidence of food insecurity, farmers need to produce sufficient food and affordable for use by the people. The paper reasoned that sustainability can be enhanced by healthy and environmental practices of farmers in the course of food production. These practices are activities and lifestyles that can reduce ill-health and improve health of farmers; and activities that can reduce negative effects of agriculture on the environment. Due to farmers\u27 poor personal health profiles, and ignorance to seek proper medical attention when the need arises, the paper concluded that that there is need to bring health literacy and environmental hygiene to the door steps of farmers; and advocated for health education through physical, environmental, reproductive as well as sexual health. The paper also suggested alternating bio-fertilizers and pesticides with chemical-fertilizer and pesticides to avoid over-use of chemicals on the farm. And also crop rotation, organic farming, conservative agriculture to alternate the highly chemicalized system of agriculture in practice at the moment.&nbsp

This study investigated the effectsof an 8-week whole body vibration and stretching exercise on low back pain among law enforcement corps in Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria. Ninety law enforcement corps were divided into three groups of two experimental and one control group. The experimental groups\u27 went through 8-week whole body vibration and stretching exercise, while the control group were placed on 8-week Fitness talk. Data was analyzed using both Descriptive andAnalysis of Covariance. The study revealed that there was significant main effect oftreatment ofWhole body vibration, 2stretching exercise and control on low back pain(F = 74.405, p<0.05, ç =0.634), also, there was (4,87)2significant main effect of whole body vibration on low back pain(F = 45.409, p<0.05, ? =0.514). (2,86)2 Also, there was significant main effect of stretching exercise on low back pain (F(2,86) = 6.601, p>0.05, ç= 0.133), however, there was no significant main effect of treatment and gender on low back pain(F(2,83) 2 = 0.011, p<0.05, ç = 0.00). Finally, there was a significant main effect of treatment, gender and age on 2 low back pain(F = 6.723, p<0.05, ç = 0.170). It was concluded that whole body vibration was more (6,84) effective than stretching exercise on low back pain. The researcher recommends that Federal, state government and stakeholder should support and fund law enforcement corps due to the nature of their work regular provision of kits, also, training and re-training on stretching exercises and whole body vibration on ameliorating the effect of low back pain

The adoption of disruptive agricultural technologies is crucial for enhancing the productivity of poultry production in Nigeria. This study investigated the constraints of adoption of disruptive agricultural technologies (Internet of Things) in poultry production in South-West (Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States), Nigeria. Questionnaire was used to collect data from two hundred and one (201) poultry farmers in the study locations. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analyze the data collected. Result showed that most (38.8%) of the poultry farmers had stock size of less than 2,500 birds. Majority (74.1%) of the poultry farmers operated both intensive and extensive production system. Furthermore, 84.0% of the poultry farmers were willing to adopt Internet of Things (IoT). The major constraints encountered by poultry farmers during adoption of disruptive agricultural technologies were lack of credit facility (2.16), poor housing system (2.06), and no government intervention (2.04). From the Logistic regression analysis, farm experience (t<0.1), stock size (t<0.05), educational level (t<0.05) and years of Internet of Things (IoT) experience (t<0.05) significantly positively influenced the willingness to adopt disruptive agricultural technologies. In conclusion, despite the willingness of the poultry farmers to adopt disruptive agricultural technologies, they were constraint due to lack of credit facility.&nbsp

Science, Technology and Innovation as Drivers of Environmental Sustainability in Africa

    Get PDF
This paper examines Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) as Drivers of Environmental Sustainability in Africa. The relationship between science, technology and innovation (STI) was examined from scholars\u27 perspectives. The paper highlighted the inability of African countries to meet up with Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) commitments by setting aside 1% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) towards building and accelerating scientific and technological capabilities. This inability militated against the attainment of the objective designed to improve innovation, productivity, economic growth and human development as well as produce the requisite number of scientists and researchers. The unattained objective by African countries when compared with economically advanced countries in practical terms of scarcity of resources, slow economic recovery and growth through STI, and an inappropriate enabling environment was identified as the gap that needs to be bridged. The theoretical framework rests on United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific\u27s “Strengthening of National Innovation Systems” model. The literature review focused on the twin scientometric indicators of research publications and patents as indicators of development. The extent to which African countries have developed when compared with the rest of Europe was backed up with data. The paper proffered solutions as the way forward. Some of these include: Developing talents, scaling up investments in science and technology, establishing scientific organization bodies, and improving STEM education in schools, among others.&nbsp

Beyond Local Spaces: Engaging Digital Space/Media in Theatre for Development Practice

    Get PDF
As a practice, Theatre for Development (TFD) has been significantly employed at local community spaces. This is because TFD prioritizes the challenges affecting ordinary people who are living in marginalized and local community spaces. The essence is to ensure that they are empowered and challenged to play active roles in salvaging their marginalized spaces and to contribute their own quota in addressing development challenges. However, in the light of new realities of today’s digital world, there is need to broaden the space of engaging ordinary people, who beyond their local domains, have become part and parcel of an evolving digital world with a real spatial presence that directly affects them. The need to engage ordinary people who are not exempted from the impacts of digital space is quite key in pushing the frontiers of the TFD agenda. This paper therefore seeks to examine the importance of having TFD practice that can attract and engage digital and spatial audience in achieving developmental agenda. Although the paper pays attention to some of the challenges which this platform/approach presents, however the possibilities and prospects of such an engagement is the thrust of this paper

Political Leadership Identities and Communication-Action Alignments of Selected Democratic Party Presidents: Political Leadership Identities and Communication-Action Alignments of Selected Democratic Party Presidents

Political communication is a politician\u27s veritable tool for policy and leadership character revelations.Itsimportance underlies and massive government investment in public communicationso that governments make calculated human capital commitment. Political leaders and communicators are or should usually be deeply rooted in, influenced, and limited by certain (un)written codes. This study examined how two democratic party presidential standard bearers, American Obama and Nigerian Obasanjo, presented whatever they said; and why they did, or not do as told. The thesis problem was mainly unravelling identifiable comparisons, and communication identities of two flag-bearers that turned executive presidents and how their presidential political communication correlated, linked, and affected the polity to which it was communicated. The paper answered two research questions: what were the politics and political communication identities of two presidents, and how much did their politics, or stipulated leadership roles align with their actual actions? Related literature was reviewed. The study fitted into two models, using two political communication theories: mainly \u27Aristotelian Political Rhetoric and \u27Constructivism\u27 as theoretical guides. Using original communications of two presidents, this comparative and historical study – requiring qualitative methodology – bridged the sparse scholarship on comparative presidential leadership and political communication. Purposively selected sample population were collated, analysed and interpreted, deploying multiple instruments, majorly content and discourse analyses chosen for their effectiveness at measuring predetermined variables. Selected published presidential communication totalling 336 obtained from secondary sources formed the sample population. Main findings revealed both presidents largely differed in their communication-achievement alignment, though they had similar political background. They were more widely divergent in their communication identities in accomplishment of statutory political leadership responsibilities. The paper concludes that the presidents did less of policy actions on their talking points.&nbsp

Stock Market Development and Inflation Rate in Nigeria: .

    No full text
The Nigerian stock market has been adversely affected by persistent high inflation and a volatile business environment, resulting in lower capitalization and activity levels compared to other nations. This phenomenon poses a challenge to the economy in attaining a delicate equilibrium between fostering stock market expansion and upholding steady inflation levels, thereby establishing a conducive atmosphere for investment. This study thereby investigates the role of stock market development in ensuring price stability over the periods of 1985 to 2020. The ARDL bound testing approach was used to estimate the regression of inflation on stock market development indices such as market capitalization, stock traded and all share index. The study found that stock market is one of the key factors responsible for price instability in the short run, although, stock market does not have a significant link with inflation in the long run. There is need for authority to develop and implement short-term price stabilization policies that focus on mitigating the impact of stock market fluctuations on essential goods and services. These measures may include the use of market circuit breakers, price controls on critical commodities, and enhanced market surveillance to curb speculative activities. Also, they should continue to prioritize sound monetary and fiscal policies aimed at controlling inflation over extended periods

Religious Education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Challenges and Opportunities in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is the current and developing environment in which changing technologies and trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing lifestyle and nature of work. The 4IR presents a number of implications for skills development and general education. This paper looked into Religious Education in the 4IR to determine the challenges and opportunities in the Nigerian context. The research employed a qualitative approach using unobtrusive research techniques which include documentary and conceptual analysis for authoritative sources to conceptualise and contextualise the 4IR and religious education in Nigeria. The findings of the study showed technological infrastructure, digital divide, content localization, quality control and misinformation, balancing traditional and technological approaches, preservation of cultural and religious heritage, ethical considerations and teacher training and professional development are common challenges of 4IR in Nigerian context. The study therefore recommends that government should invest in the development of infrastructure and human, technical, and financial capacity to develop the education system to participate in the 4IR as several opportunities were open religious education.&nbsp

Implications of Jesus Christ’s Political Concepts in Matthew 22:15-22 on Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA)

    Get PDF
Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) as a faith-based organization has frowned at its members, especially its employees to take an active part in politics, which itself is a science and an art of governance. However, the concept of Jesus Christ on politics as shown in Matthew 22:15-22 stands against this organization’s stance. This paper aims at reconsidering this concept in Matthew 22:15-22 and its implication on the organization. The paper reviews the general biblical concept of politics with a brief exegetical analysis of Matthew 22:15-22. A brief history of the organization is given and some indications from the organization’s constitution in relation to members of the organization’s participation in politics are enumerated. The paper concludes with the implication of the concept of Jesus Christ on politics for the organization and recommends, among others, that the organization should encourage its members and employees to be actively involved in partisan politics through the amendment of the organization’s constitution

Traditional Religion and Modernity in Kofi Awoonor’s “The Cathedral”

    Get PDF
African Traditional Religion (ATR) has been undergoing subtle transitions and alterations over the years. Recent study shows a significant threat of extinction due to the rapid infiltration of the forces of globalization and modernism (Chitando et al 2020). Modernism has influenced African Indigenous Faiths and practices of some African Societies is the new point of call for research in African Traditional Religious Studies (ATRS).These transitions have been taking place from the inception of colonialism through to the post colonial era and to modern times. The Aim of this study is to look at African Traditional Religion through the lenses of modernism, while drawing inference from Kofi Awoonor’s evocative poem, "The Cathedral," the stark contrast between the towering Christian edifice and the sacred baobab tree symbolizes the complex interplay between African Traditional Religion (ATR) and modernity. Awoonor\u27s poignant verses delve into the cultural tensions that arise when traditional beliefs and practices are challenged by the imposition of Western ideologies. The poem opens with a striking image of the baobab tree, a revered symbol of life and ancestral wisdom in ATR. Its roots anchor it deeply to the land, connecting it to the past and the spirits that inhabit the natural world. The baobab\u27s presence stands in stark contrast to the "concrete cathedral" that has been erected in its place, a symbol of the encroaching Western influence that seeks to replace traditional beliefs with a foreign worldview. Awoonor\u27s language is laced with irony and subtle critique as he juxtaposes the cathedral\u27s imposing architecture with the baobab\u27s organic form. The cathedral, with its "iron ribs" and "glass eyes," appears cold and sterile, devoid of the spiritual connection that the baobab embodies. The poem\u27s speaker laments the loss of connection to the land and the ancestral spirits, a loss that mirrors the erosion of ATR in the face of modernization
