Dramatisation of Historical Realities for Ethnocultural Development: A Reading of Ahmed Yerima’s Atthiru
Get PDFThe thematic thrust of dramatic narratives among most African playwrights usually highlights ideological and ethnocultural experiences between the coloniser and the colonised. Therefore, the theatre space provides the avenue where such colonial experiences are re-enacted, and challenged. Ahmed Yerima\u27s theatrical endeavor follows in this pursuit, with creative dimensions. His representative play - Atthiru, is examined in this paper to provide an ethnocultural perspective to the historical realities of leadership, governance, socio-economic and communal engagements, that depict the African enactment of history, and yet prevalent in contemporary Nigeria. New Historicism theory is utilised to situate the plays in context, with thematic discourse, characterisation and dramatic techniques deployed for elucidation. The study accentuates drama plays, as veritable tools for historical reconstruction and development that depict leadership assertion, conflicts of tradition, religion, identity, power and economic sustenance of the past and present, in contemporary Nigeria.  
Rethinking Proverbs as Problem-solving Tools in the 21st Century: The Example of Ogu in Southwestern Nigeria
Get PDFProverbs are short witty sayings which do not only contain a lot of wisdom, morals, truth as well as metaphors, but also constitute part of the linguistic and cultural repertoire of many African languages. This study examined proverbs in Ogu, a minority language spoken in Southwestern Nigeria, with the aim of ascertaining their extent of entrenching and preserving the core values of the Ogu people, including their ethno-linguistic heritage. Data were gathered using the research instruments of key informant interviews and focus group discussions to establish the role and effects of proverbs as linguistic forms among the people. The study adopted the framework of metaphoric analysis in analysing the conceptual metaphors that are embedded in the proverbs while data were subjected to descriptive and content analyses. Findings show that proverbs are regarded as a very intricate part of the linguistic repertoire of the Ogu people and are highly valued. They represent their core values and act as checks and balances in maintaining decorum, both in the family and in the wider community. Data from interview sessions, however, reveal that Ogu proverbs are disappearing as only the elderly ones now use them. Findings from focus group discussions also reveal that parents hardly transfer proverbs to their children while the younger speakers neither understand proverbs nor use them. The study submits that Ogu people need to revisit the use of proverbs as a problem-solving tool in the 21st Century. 
Pragma-phonological Analysis of Yoruba Proverbs in Agboola’s Film – O TO GEE
Get PDFAfrican proverbs remain one of the cultural heritages of Africans; a product of human communication experiences through which philosophy and culture can be expressed, transmitted, and unraveled via the instrumentality of language. Most of the previous studies on proverbs examine written proverbs in literary texts which they analyse from linguistic and literary perspectives. The specific objectives of the study are to identify proverbs used in Agboola’s film O To Gee, examine the phonological features in O To Gee with a view to discussing the conversational implications of the phonological features identified in the proverbs. The study employed qualitative research design,20 out of 86 proverbs used in the films were purposively selected and analysed. The study drew its theoretical insights from Brazil’s discourse intonation and Grice’s Conversational Maxims. The study found that spoken proverbs are different from written ones in form, structure and features; certain features such as assimilation, elision, epenthesis, prominence, vowel lengthening and speaker’s personal idiosyncrasies are noticeable in spoken proverbs which contribute to meaning making. The implication of this difference results in clarity, precision, emotionality, communication effect, assertiveness, context and cultural expressions and speaker versus listener statuses. The study concludes that the beauty and effectiveness of proverb usage are more expressed in their spoken forms and intended meaning appreciated by the interlocutor. It therefore recommends that attention should be given to the study of spoken of proverbs and that proverbs should be written the way they are said in order to retain their original messages
Language and Positive Identity Reconstruction: A Study of Nairaland and Facebook
Get PDFLanguage is a source of identity. A language may help to create a community of people who belong to a particular social group. So, there is a strong correlation between language and identity. The internet and cyberspace have created new vistas of interactive fora for real-time conversations among individuals of different age brackets, who are culturally and geographically dispersed. They post and participate in written conversations, which combine speech, writing and online practices.It is also pertinent to note that age identities are also shaped by media presentations. Thus, the study examines the connection between language and identity in the Nigerian cyberspace, with emphasis on Facebook and Nairaland. The theoretical perspective employed is a hybrid of the performativity and symbolic interactionism. Purposively sampled extracts of conversations got from Nairaland and Facebook constitute the data for the study. The authors demonstrate using the theories, that people project their identities through age, gender and Nigerian pidgin. The analysis shows that identities are built in such spacial environments through social interaction and dialogical processes. It is concluded that cyber identities are fluid in representations, affirming that cyber-identity is different from physical identity, hence Interactants construct new psychosocial identities, along ethnocultural lines.

Social Capital: A mechanism to buffer Stress for Sustainability of Mental Health
Get PDFThe contemporary cosmopolitan society is fast-paced and self-absorbed. It is full of stress in various forms; physical, environmental, socio economic and psychological. The World Health Organization rightly declared that stress has become a worldwide epidemic that affects the physiology of the body. In extreme cases, stress could lead to disability, anxiety disorders, sexual dysfunction, depression and suicide. These complications of extreme stress have profound consequence on mental health, an important component of the Sustainable Development Goals. Hence, the need to address mechanisms for coping with stress. This medico- social discourse, focuses on social capital as a mechanism to buffer stress for sustainability of mental health. Social capital is conceptualized as the connections, networks and relationships among people. The discourse is hinged on the social capital and social network theories. It also elucidates the magnitude and impact of stress as well as social capital, a non-pharmacological mechanism to buffer stress. The discourse utilizes WHO mental health statistics (2023), Gallup Stress Statistics (2021/2022) and examines existing scholarly socio scientific research papers. The paper reechoes the value of human relationships and the African “Spirit of Ubuntu” in co-building a new eco social world that leaves no one behind. It recommends the enhancement of social capital through initiatives that fortifies solidarity and empathy. The paper elucidates Social Work as formal source of social capital. It also stresses the need to be cautious in the establishment of relationships, as social capital could be negatively utilized
Female Education: Panacea for Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Development in Nigeria. A case study of Tsitsi Dangarembga\u27s Nervous Condition and Mariama Ba\u27 So Long A Letter
Get PDFThis paper focuses the relationship of female Education and it\u27s importance in the societal development. It has been of note in this 21st century, how the females have come on ground to be a good agent of change in the society. Issues of female, nature and society are interwoven because they are both interrelated and are both affected by the patriarchal hegemony which exists in the society. The females of recent, have been having a consensus that the females should be allowed to be educated, which is a fundamental factor of inclusive development and a good tools for poverty reduction. This research work will examine two literary texts, which are Tsitsi Dangarembga\u27s Nervous Condition and Mariama Ba\u27s So Long A Letter, through the Ecofeminism Theory of how Ecosphere as a binary entity of male/female and nature/culture have a great impact on female education and societal development. The books themes of poverty, feminine challenges and actualization of their dreams and how they finally succeed in contributing immensely to the societal development and reduction of poverty in their society will be examined. The books emphasise that female education, can lead to a reduction of poverty either directly or indirectly. Females if empowered will have a good resultant effect on the society in order to create equity in the society for better opportunities which can lead to improved social, political and economic outcomes. The study concludes that female education is an effective tool in reducing poverty and promoting inclusive development. Further research is required to understand the behavioural changes around female education and the different ways by which it can be used to promote growth, reduce poverty and ensure great inclusion. 
Teachers Quality and Business Education Students Entrepreneurial Skills Development in Public Universities in South West, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study examined the impact of teacher quality on Business Education students\u27 entrepreneurship skills development in public universities in Southwest, Nigeria. The study examined the extent to which teacher quality has helped to build students entrepreneurship skills. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design method was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 100 to 400 level Business Education students from 11 public universities in Southwest offering Business Education as a course of study and multistage sampling technique was adopted to draw the sample size. Firstly, simple random sampling technique was adopted to select four universities from the population of study while purposive sampling technique was used to draw the sample size of 400 participants from the population. A four rating structured online questionnaire titled “Teacher Quality and Business Education Students Entrepreneurial Skills Development Questionnaire” (TQBESESDQ) was employed to gather data for the study. Person Product Moment Correlation (r) was used to test the hypotheses. Results from the findings revealed among others that instructional methods adopted by teachers have a great effect on the development of students\u27 entrepreneurship skills. Based on the findings, the study recommended that instructional methods adopted by teachers should be tailored towards improving self-reliance skills of students, teachers should be constantly trained and more qualified teachers should be employed in order to meet students\u27 needs. 
Promoting Interfaith Relations in a Multi-Religious Society for Sustainable Development
Get PDFReligion according to many religious scholars has a powerful influence on every aspect of society. Professor J. K. Ayantayo (2023) who also discussed the potent influence of religion in his book, Sociological of Religion in African Concept, remarked that religion has an impact on a person, a group of people, and a nation. This position is apparent in a multi-religious society like Nigeria. People are conscious of their religious practices and sentimental about them so much that it often influences their behaviours. The arguments over beliefs and religious superiority have repeatedly brought the disruption of societal peace and destruction of lives and properties. Although there have been efforts on the part of government and religious stakeholders to promote peace, the challenge of religious intolerance and religious differentiation in every aspect of the nation is a cancer worm that has been a recurrent decimal within our society. As a developing country with a high rate of poverty, some religious extremists have adopted dysfunctional roles to wage wars against their probable religious opponents without just cause. Interfaith dialogue among religious functionaries and their followers will enhance sustainable development particularly when there is a continuing effort on their part to respect all religions and their beliefs regardless of their convictions. Role of Religious Teachings on Justice, Peaceand Security for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Islamic Perspective
Get PDFIt is well established that there is no nation that can enjoy a true sustainable development without justice, peace and security. Based on this view, religion as a complete way of life, Islam left no aspect of human life untouched, being spiritual and materials, economic and political, individual and social, educational and cultural, national and international. Therefore, this paper presents the challenge of injustice, fear and insecurity in Nigeria and prescribed some Islamic measures which if taken, harmony, peace, security and sustainable development are ensured in this county, where fear and social vices will be things of the past. In order to achieve these goals, historical and positioned systems of data collection were adopted. The study discovered that the only solution to these problems in Nigeria is to subject the leaders and followers to embark on the law promulgated by the Creator of the universe and total submission to Him alone can solve the problems. The paper recommended that, every Nigerian citizen should be made to understand the true contents of their religious books to actualize the love, tolerance and togetherness embedded therein for peaceful co-existence. More so there is need for dialogue between the various religious leaders in the county for the exchange of ideas, views and opinions to bridge the gap between the faiths.
