Girl-child Education: A Tool for Community Development
Girl-child education and community development are interconnected issues. When girls are educated, they become empowered and have the potential to contribute to the development of their communities. Educating girls can lead to better health outcomes, reduced poverty, and increased social and economic development. However, in many parts of the world, girls face barriers to education, including poverty, cultural norms, and lack of access to resources. It is crucial to invest in girls\u27 education and provide them with the opportunity to fully realize their potential, which in turn leads to a more prosperous and equitable society. Therefore, community leaders, policymakers, and educators must prioritize and support initiatives that prioritize girls\u27 education and empower them to become leaders in their communities.

Leveraging on Building Characteristics for Household Flood Adaptation
Buildings are designed to provide passive climate adaptation and protection for occupants against harmful environmental conditions. Today, many households in sub-Saharan Africa are subjected to physical, social and economic losses from flood impact. As flood risk and associated impacts continue to grow in the built environment, there is need to evolve strategies to advance the resilience of these vulnerable communities. Unfortunately, there are limited empirical studies on buildings’ role in flood risk reduction in these regions. This study sought to bridge this gap in knowledge by examining currents levels of awareness of household flood adaptation strategies, and the influence of specific building characteristics on household flood adaptation. The study takes a cross-sectional research design approach involving data collection through a questionnaire survey from 47Architectural Educators in ARCON accredited Schools of Architecture in Lagos, Nigeria. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results indicate a high level of awareness of household flood adaptation strategies. Also, findings suggested that building’s floor height and drainage systems have the most influence on reducing flood impact to vulnerable households. The highlighted building characteristics can thus be leveraged on to optimize buildings’ function in the flood adaptation process. Recommendations are also made on the way forward based on the results obtained from the study.

Aspects of Nonverbal Communication in Mildred Okwo and Rita Dominic’s The Meeting
Since one of the factors that contribute to the success of a film is the ability of the actors and actresses to have a thorough interpretation of the script/story to appear as real as possible, this study aims to describe the aspects of nonverbal communication in the film –The Meeting (2012) by Mildred Okwo and Rita Dominic. This paper analyses the aspects of nonverbal communication in conveying intercultural meaning. It argues that aside the transfer of cultural meanings, nonverbal communication aspects perform specific functions which strengthen and lend greater significance to conveying meaning to other characters. In addition to this, nonverbal communication cues abound in the Nigerian film industry productions, informally called Nollywood. The aim of a film has continued to be how to creatively bring the script/story to life through different communication channels that would elicit viewers’ emotions. The major aspects of nonverbal communication in the film are physical appearance, kinesics, vocal behaviour and cultural sign. The data for this study are some purposively selected sampled scenes in the minister of Lands office which was also a major setting in the film. The scenes were studied and analyzed. The results imply that nonverbal communication in the movie functions as a powerful tool to add depth and authenticity to the story, enabling viewers to relate to the characters more deeply. It should be noted that aspects of nonverbal communication can create an air of confusion when the receiver of a message fails to understand it as seen in some scenes in The Meetin

A Survey of the Yoruba-English Translation Skills of Secondary School Students in Ogun State, Nigeria
Language and culture are Siamese twins that share the same heart. Yoruba idioms form a large window for showcasing culture through communication and by their interpretation into English language which is not only a central language in Nigeria but also the leading international language. This study investigated the knowledge of Yoruba idioms among Yoruba-speaking secondary school students in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. It also examined their ability to properly give a contextual interpretation to the idioms in English language. It also looked into the possibility of employing the English language itself as a metalanguage to revive and teach proper interpretation of Yoruba idioms into English language. Data collected from twohundred teachers and a focus group of fifty students wasanalysed using the chi square statistics and the descriptive survey method. Findings show that students have a poor knowledge of Yoruba idioms and they cannot properly interpret the few they know into English language. This already endangers a linguistic feature of the Yoruba culture. Recommendations include the use of modern technology and the English class in the promotion and the interpretation of Yoruba idioms into English language.
Nigeria Police Force and the Quest for Community Policing: Nigeria Police Force and the Quest for Community Policing
The Nigeria Police Force is constitutionally responsible for the internal security of the country. Section 214 of 1999 constitution(as amended) and Part 2 of 2020 Police Act provide that the police shall be responsible for the internal security of the country, and no other police force shall be established. However, the police have not been able to live up to the expectations of protecting lives and properties of the citizens. Factors that militate against effective performance of these functions include, lack of training, poor infrastructure, shortage of personnel, poor remuneration, obsolete operational equipments, corruption, among others. Previous administrations have set up presidential committees on police reforms. The main objective of the study is to interrogate the factors that necessitate calls for police reform and why it has led to the introduction of community policing. The population of study is the Nigeria police. The study is anchored on democratic policing theory as theoretical framework. The study uses secondary source and employs descriptive method of analysis. Findings revealed citizens quest for community policing was due to inadequate police personnel and poor knowledge of the geography of host communities which has impacted negatively on the efforts of the police to tackle crimes. The conclusion from the findings was that police relationship with the public is at its lowest ebb due to corruption, lack of trust and human rights abuse which has deepened negative perceptions of the force. The study recommends that police should be strengthened through training, provision of modern equipment, and deployment of police to their local government, and government should fund community policing through which collaboration between the citizens and police could be strengthene
Generic Structure Potential of the Adjudicatory Proceedings of Juvenile Court in South-west Nigeria
The juvenile court is a legal institution where children that are offenders or neglected are arraigned for trial or supervision. Generic Structure Potential (GSP), a perspective developed by Halliday and Hassan (1989) accounts for the thematic activities of such institutions. GSP is a contextual analysis that discusses the components of texts and sequence of discourse in interactions. Extant studies on thematic activities of institutions have focused on GSP of the essays, newspaper entries, editorials, shop interactions, classroom interactions and wedding proceedings. These works serve as the basis for proposing generic prototypical patterns and generic classifications of discursive events. Adjudicatory proceedings involve issues related to children in the Nigerian context. The contextual study of the prototypical pattern of adjudicatory proceedings from GSP’s perspective which sparsely exists in literature is the gap this paper aims to fill. This study employs three selected juvenile courts in South-West Nigeria to explore the contextual situation and interactional structure of the proceedings. This paper is able to predict the nature of adjudicatory proceedings, present obligatory structural elements as based on mutual assumption and demonstrate mitigation against politic behaviour through clarification utterances. The study contributes to a better understanding of juvenile court proceedings and provides insights into the delivery of justice to children
