L2 Pronunciation Intelligibility in Google Voice-to-text Applications
There is an increase in the application of new technologies in all spheres of human endeavour. Industrial 4.0 is one of the recently birthed industrial revolutions through which machines understand human speech, thinks and comprehends human intentions. It structures critical components for intelligent vehicles, intelligent offices, intelligent service robots, intelligent industries, and so on. This furthers the structure of the intelligent ecology of the Internet of Things. At the centre of all these is human speech which is used to give order to and ask questions from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robots. Previous studies on AI and linguistics have discussed the use of AI in language classroom using AI modelling pronunciation to enhance pronunciation performance of the second language learners. This study examines Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) using Word Error Rate (WER) to measure the level of intelligibility of the pronunciation of man to machine. It investigates if there will be communication breakdown if the pronunciation is not intelligible. To achieve this, 30 L2 speakers of English were selected from Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba to read 135 crafted words into 5sentences using Google ASR application as primary data. The secondary data was drawn from journal articles, textbooks and the Internet. The result showed that the pronunciation model used to develop the application has made provision for several L2 speakers of English in reality of the new world Englishes.
Language, Power, and Intentions: Exploring Pragmatic Functions in President Muhammadu Buhari\u27s Inaugural Address
This study investigates the pragmatic functions employed in President Muhammadu Buhari\u27s inaugural address, aiming to fill a research gap in the analysis of Nigerian political discourse. While existing studies have examined linguistic features in political speeches, there is a scarcity of research specifically focusing on the pragmatic functions in President Buhari\u27s inaugural address. The purpose of this study is to explore how language is used to convey power dynamics, and communicative intentions within the inaugural address. Employing a qualitative research design, the study conducts a detailed analysis of pragmatic functions, drawing on insights from previous research on political discourse analysis and pragmatics. The findings reveal a range of pragmatic functions employed by President Buhari, including the expression of intentions, promises, acknowledgments, appeals, and reminders. These pragmatic functions serve to establish authority, articulate governance priorities, and mobilize support among the Nigerian populace. This study contributes to our understanding of the role of language in political communication, highlighting the significance of pragmatic analysis in uncovering the features of presidential discourse and its implications for governance and society.

Empirical Examination of the Effect of Asset Quality on Financial Performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria
The performance of a banking institution is largely driven by its ability to increase its customers’ patronage, retain them and manage its assets and liabilities to enhance optimal returns. This can be done through banks maintaining adequate capital and quality assets for better performance. Even though banks are highly regulated and capital adequacy requirements have been in place since 1988 in Nigeria, many banks have experienced poor performance as indicated by high levels of credit risk, poor quality loans and high incidence of non-performing loans. It is thus imperative to ascertain the effect of asset quality on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. This study employed ordinary least square regression analysis with emphasis on fixed effect and random effect models. The findings of this research revealed that non-performing loans have a negative and not significant effect on the financial performance of DMBs in Nigeria (? = - 0.022478, P >0.05) and loan loss provisions have a negative significant effect on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria (? = - 0.002954, P < 0.05). The results showed that asset quality is a key factor affecting the financial performance of Deposit money banks. It confirmed that Deposit Money Banks with good management of its loan achieve higher financial performance. So, to work properly in any economic condition the banks should have minimum or zero loan loss provision which provides financial soundness and stabilit
Effect of Dance-exercise and Brisk-walking on Cardio-respiratory Indices of obese Undergraduates in Lead City University, Ibadan
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of dance-exercise and brisk-walking on cardiorespiratory indices of obese undergraduates in Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria. Sixty (60) obese students were purposively sampled and randomized experimental Pretestposttest control group design was used for the study. The participants were required to Danceexercise and Brisk-walk 3 times a week, 50 minutes per session at 100-120bpm for 8 weeks.Analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA) and T-test were used to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 significance level. Result revealed that there was a significant main effect of treatments (F (2, 36) =3.442, p<0.05, ?2=0.043) on the cardiorespiratory indices of obese undergraduates. Alsothere was no significant main effect of sex on the cardiorespiratory (F(1, 37) =0.598, p>0.05, ?2=0.016 indices of obese undergraduates. Furthermore, there was no significant interaction effect of treatments and sex on the cardiorespiratory (F (2, 33) =0.063, p>0.05, ?2=0.004) indices of obese undergraduates. The study concluded that Dance-exercise and Brisk-walkingare exercise modes that can bring positive changes in the cardiorespiratory indices of obese individuals. Additionally, sex was not a determinant of the outcome of Dance-exercise and Brisk-walking exercise modes on cardiorespiratory indices of obese undergraduate in this study. The study recommends that the school authority should organize periodic sensitization programme on different exercises including Dance-exercise and Brisk-walking as means of improving cardiorespiratory fitness of individuals. Dance-exercise and Brisk-walkingare not cost intense and can be incorporated in fitness programmes as they affect cardiorespiratory indices especially of obese individuals
Comparative study of the Application of Seasonal ARIMA and Exponential Smoothing Methods in Nigerian Stock Exchange Market
This paper compared the performance of two forecasting models (Seasonal ARIMA and Exponential smoothing) in an attempt to identify the model that fits properly in forecasting Nigerian stock exchange market. A two-staged approach to forecasting was carried out using monthly data for the period of 1985 to 2013. The models were assessed in similarly structured setting at the beginning, and then best models identified at this level were compared in a differently structured setting. The results show that Seasonal ARIMA (4,1,3)(3,1,2)12 and Holt-Winters multiplicative smoothing method are effective in forecasting Nigerian stock exchange market in a similarly structured setting. Nonetheless, when the two models were compared under different structures, the performance of Holt-Winters multiplicative smoothing method outperformed that of Seasonal ARIMA (4,1,3)(3,1,2)12. This suggests that Holt-Winters multiplicative smoothing method with Alpha (0.01), Delta (0.11) and Gamma (0.11) is more effective in forecasting Nigerian stock exchange market in the short run and it can be used to aid planning processes in the stock exchange market. Likewise, the seasonality pattern that characterizes stock exchange highlights the need to promote more of stock exchange market so as to lessen the negative impacts associated with it. The two models can be adequately used to forecast stock exchange data as the results have shown their potentiality in that regard

Promoting Sustainability Development: The Role of Business Studies Teachers\u27 in Public Upper Basic School in Oyo State
This paper focused on promoting sustainability development: the role of business studies teachers in public upper basic schools. It examined the concept of business studies as a subject and the teachers\u27 for promoting sustainability in public upper basic schools. Business studies is an academic subject that exposes students to business knowledge and practices and it\u27s also a subject that\u27s been taught in the upper basic schools and geared towards imparting in students the necessary business skills, attitudes and knowledge required to survive and succeed in the world of business. However, despite the wide applicability and importance of Business studies, many students seem not to be finding their feet in the subject and world of work after graduation, that\u27s why this study seeks to determine the strategies that the business studies teachers\u27 will inculcate in promoting sustainability development. The study adopts the descriptive survey design. One research question and One hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance. Population of the study consists of 1,269 business studies teachers, while sample consisted of 109 business studies teachers selected from 11 selected local government were randomly selected across all the three senatorial districts. A validated questionnaire containing 29 items with reliability coefficient of 0.05 level of significance. Findings reveals that instructional facilities such as visual aids and typing pool used by the teacher in teaching of business studies in Oyo state are rarely available while audio- visual aids are not available for the teaching of business studies in upper basic schools in Oyo state. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that government and other educational stakeholders should ensure that the public upper basic schools should be equipped with the right instructional facilities such as the typing pool, visual and audio- visual aid for effective teaching of business studies as they can stimulate learning and help the students to have practical knowledge of the subject which will help in promoting sustainability development in the nation
Influence of Environmental Accounting Reporting and Social Sustainability Disclosure on Financial Performance of Listed Oil and Gas Firms in Nigeria
Environmental accounting reporting and social sustainability disclosures influence on financial performance of oil and gas firms in Nigeria was empirically investigated. Ex Post Facto design was adopted and data for the study were obtained from the published annual financial reports and accounts of the entire oil and gas firms quoted on Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Two hypotheses were formulated in order to direct the flow of this study while the data was analyzed using OLS regression model using STATA V.15. The results of the study indicate that environmental accounting reporting and social sustainability disclosures have significant and positive influence on financial performance of listed oil and gas firms in Nigeria at 1% and 5% significant level respectively. Thus, the study concludes that environmental accounting reporting & social sustainability disclosure have positive influence on firms\u27 performance. In lieu of this, the study suggests that environmental reporting in corporate financial reporting should be made mandatory by the government and fine to be imposed for non-compliance. Also, tax credit should be given to organizations that comply with its environmental laws of the land which encourages environmental reporting
Democracy, Good Governance and Press Freedom in the 21st Century Nigeria
The relationship amongst Democracy, good governance, and Press freedom cannot be over emphasized. This is because they are inter-related as the practice of one brings about the effectiveness of the other. In Nigeria, precisely in this 21st century, it is however unfortunate that Democracy is not practiced in a practical manner and its seen as being a theoretical phenomenon. When democracy is not properly practiced, there won\u27t be room for good governance freedom of the press and through press freedom the excesses of government can be checkmated. Using qualitative sources of data, the paper reveals that democracy has even in advanced countries not been practiced freely and fairly, though it is not dominated by many flaws as it is the case in Nigeria. This has prevented good governance from taking place. The paper established the link between, Democracy, Good governance and Press freedom in Nigeria and is of the opinion that good governance ensures democratic norms and practices while democracy offers the best prospects for good governance. However, democratic governance does not imply press freedom and good governance. It however, follows that good governance and press freedom is enhanced by democracy. The paper clearly demonstrates that efforts to attain good governance and freedom of the press in Nigeria has failed and concludes by way of recommendation that all the apparatus that can be used to promote good governance and press freedom be employed towards a lasting and effective democracy
