    Get PDF
This study responds to recent calls for more research on this subject by empirically examining the effect of board attributes on risk disclosure of quoted industrial goods firms listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group. This study adopts an ex post facto research design. The population of the study comprised all the 13 listed industrial goods firms. Data were extracted from the published financial statements of the industrial goods companies, covering a period of ten (10) years from 2013 to 2024. Risk disclosure was measured using dichotomous scale “1” if a company discloses risk in the financial statement, “0” otherwise. The study employs logistic regression as the technique of analysis with the aid of STATAversion 16 as a tool for analysis. The results indicate that board independence, board size and board gender diversity all have significant effects on the extent of risk disclosure in industrial goods companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group. The study concluded that the composition is a viable corporate mechanism for improved voluntary disclosure such as risk disclosure in industrial goods companies. This study recommends that the Nigerian industrial goods sector be composed of boards with diversities such as gender, expertise, and nationality, especially the independent directors who can bring their experiences to bear in making decisions with respect to risk information disclosures.&nbsp

In many traditional African cultures, gendered roles exist to subdue women and girls to manage the household chores. With modernisation and economic realisation, where many women have to combine work with household chores while girls have to combine school with the chores or stay out of school to fulfil their ‘domestic’ roles. The effect of the roles in the lives of women is mainly visible in terms of slow progress economically when compared with their male counterparts. Unfortunately, the domestic work being carried out by women and girls in Africa is not monetised, as compared with what obtains in India, and does not contribute to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). In essence, these works go unaccounted for domestically. When the work is compared to what is being done by paid domestic helps, it is apparent that a lot of economic activities are not accounted for within households. This article adopts a socio-legal method, which seeks to combine the legal and institutional frameworks with the existing available data, to investigate the constitutional protection of women and girls from domestic economic exploitation. The article relies on secondary data on the remuneration of domestic helps in select African countries and the nature of work they carry out as well as literature on uncompensated domestic chores carried out by an average woman and girl in the same country. The article concludes by recommending constitutional protection from domestic economic exploitation as a way of contributing to gender equality.&nbsp

A Critical Analysis Of The Jurisdiction Of The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee To Punish Legal Practitioners In Nigeria For Misconduct

    Get PDF
This paper examines the jurisdiction conferred on the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) by the Legal Practitioners Act to punish legal practitioners in Nigeria for misconduct. Its objective is to explore the categories of persons over whom the LPDC has jurisdiction, the nature of offenses they can be charged with and tried for, and whether or not a legal practitioner can be punished for misconduct unconnected to law practice. This study reveals that legal practitioners in non-practicing roles, such as business executives, civil servants, or law professors, remain connected to the legal profession. They are therefore subject to the disciplinary authority of the LPDC. Not all misconduct by a legal practitioner, outside of practicing law, leads to disciplinary action. The paper argues that legal practitioners should be disciplined for misconduct outside the scope of legal practice only if it is dishonest or harmful to the profession, particularly when such misconduct is amplified on the internet and social media. Furthermore, even though the LPDC has limited jurisdiction to handle disciplinary matters involving legal practitioners, it extends its involvement to misconduct that is unrelated to the practice of law. Such misconduct includes the ones committed on social media. In conclusion, not all misconduct by a legal practitioner, outside the law practice, leads to disciplinary action. Nevertheless, legal practitioners will be disciplined for misconduct outside the scope of legal practice only if it is dishonest or harmful to the profession. The paper recommends that it is imperative that the NBA monitor the activities of its members, particularly on social media. They should not wait to receive formal complaints from the public before taking appropriate measures to subject legal practitioners who bring the profession to disciplinary measures by the LPDC

    No full text
With increasing globalization and direct trade competition among countries, the role of exchange rate in both macroeconomic stability and the growth process has become more enhanced beyond what has been previously documented. Specifically, the real exchange rate has come to occupy the prime place among macroeconomic variables because of its influence on other variables. By directly affecting the competitiveness of domestic products, the real exchange is a key determinant of both exports and imports, while also affecting investment and capital accumulation. This influence of real exchange rate significantly dictates the trajectory of growth both in the short run and in the long run. The effect of real exchange rate on employment and inflation also transmits to affect the rapidity of growth. This paper investigates the effect of exchange rate on economic growth in Nigeria over the period of 198-2019 by providing further evidence given the mixed results that have emanated from previous studies. Using Error Correction Mechanism (ECM), the study finds that a unidirectional causality exists running from exchange rate to growth. It was also found that currency depreciation in Nigeria stimulates growth both in the short-run and in the long-run, though the relationship is statistically insignificant. Based on the findings, the study recommends policies to stabilize the exchange rate as a policy instrument for promoting economic growth in Nigeria

Gross domestic product wasconsidered as the dependent variable, while public capital expenditure, publicrecurrent expenditure, and commercial bank credit to the private sector weretreated as independent variables. The Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL)analysis was employed to analyze the data, covering the period from 1981 to 2023.The findings revealed important insights into the dynamics between these variables.Notably, public capital expenditure in lag two emerged as a significant predictor ofeconomic growth, as evidenced by its positive and statistically significant coefficient. This implied that public investment aimed at stimulating output exhibited a delayedbut positive effect on gross domestic product in Nigeria. Conversely, the commercialbank credit to the private sector in lag three demonstrated a negative andstatistically significant relationship with gross domestic product, suggesting that adecrease in private sector credit could hinder economic growth. Based on theseresults, policymakers were recommended to prioritize and increase public capitalexpenditure to foster economic growth as it is crucial to maintain a conducive environment for credit availability and accessibility to the private sector.Implementing supportive financial policies lead to improvement on the bankingsector infrastructure, and ensuring easy access to financing in order to stimulateprivate sector investment, job creation, and overall economic productivity. Strikinga balance between public and private sector initiatives helps Nigeria to unlock itsfull growth potential and paves the way for sustainable development
