Management of government owned tertiary institutions should engage in partnership with relevant stakeholders such as the alumni bodies, non-governmental organizations for financial supports so as to pave way more funding with a view to ensure robust services in Nigerian governments tertiary institutions

Towards Understanding Ibadan Traditional and Religious Systems Before and After the Advent of Christianity

    Get PDF
Long before the colonial interruption or the advent of Christianity in Ibadanland, the Yoruba people had been exhibiting their republican nature by relentlessly subverting their kingship institution through civil disturbances and rebellions. This made some groups of people to settle in what is now known as Ibadanland after the fall of Oyo Empire. This paper aims to briefly introduce the readers to the traditional and religious life in Ibadanland in the nineteenth century, the time of the advent of Christianity in the city, the political and administrative setting, and the religion of the people of Ibadanland on the eve of the advent of the Christian religion. The paper adopted historical research design to achieve this as systematic literature review was done on some literature about Ibadanland. It was found out that Ibadan people were traditional worshippers with egúngún (masquerade) and Okebadan as the major religious festivals of the people. Islam came before the Hinderers led some people to introduce Christianity to the people. Ibadanland has had a wellestablished traditional political and administrative system of Baale-in-Council that later metamorphosed to Olubadan-in-Council. There has been an almost seamless succession plan to the throne of Baale, now Olubadan, of Ibadanland. Olubadan has become the symbol of unity in Ibadanland as other institutions are mere agents of unity or catalysts for concretizing that unity. As recommendations, the strengths and the weaknesses in the traditional and religious life of Ibadan people and administrative systems are to be revisited in the light of the advent of Christianity and modernization in the city.&nbsp

    Get PDF
This paper delves into the intricate web of factors perpetuating poverty in Africa\u27s largest economy – Nigeria. Nigeria grapples with a significant population living in extreme poverty. The paper underscores the multifaceted factors contributing to poverty, including historical, economic, social, and institutional elements, and the exacerbating role of gender inequality. This paper does not just diagnose problems; it prescribes actionable solutions. The conceptualization and recommendations for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are very Western/European-centric. This paper takes an Africo-centric approach and perspective to the analysis and execution of SDG 1 (No Poverty). By synthesizing lessons from global best practices and homegrown innovations, the paper charts a path towards a more equitable Nigeria. Proposed strategies include gender-responsive initiatives, data-driven policies, and inclusive economic measures to address systemic inequalities and promote sustainable development. The paper also addresses the detrimental role of political patronage in poverty alleviation efforts and suggests countermeasures. It emphasizes the necessity for context-specific, data-driven approaches to poverty alleviation and robust institutional frameworks to ensure programme effectiveness and sustainability. The paper challenges policymakers, development practitioners, and citizens alike to reimagine poverty alleviation, advocating for a holistic approach that addresses root causes while embracing cutting-edge solutions. In conclusion, the paper recommends further research into unconditional cash transfers, climateresilient agriculture, and culturally sensitive poverty metrics to inform more effective poverty reduction strategies in Nigeria.&nbsp

This study stems from the need to understand the disparate treatment oftrained female missionaries, often triggered by gender and maritalconsiderations and which results in unemployment, limited opportunitiesfor education, or participation in leadership processes. Therefore, thisstudy examined female missionaries\u27 perceptions, attitudes, andexperiences regarding marital challenges in The Redeemed ChristianChurch of God (RCCG) Mission Engagements. Grounded in theIntersectional Feminism Theory, it contributed to the literature on theexperience of female missionaries in Nigeria. The study used a descriptivesurvey research design to randomly select 69 respondents from theestimated population of 250-trained female missionaries across Nigeria. Itused a validated questionnaire, administered through Google Forms, togather data on demographics and specific research questions. Findingsreveal that female missionaries align with RCCG\u27s mission and are activelyengaged (Mean scores of 3.45 and 3.38). They acknowledge challenges,(mean score = 2.52) but view mission work as central to their purpose(mean score = 3.58). Marital status wields a modest positive effect onengagement (coefficient = 0.135, p = 0.036), explains approximately 4.1%of variances, but is not a significant barrier (mean score = 2.23) to missionengagement, though non-significant p-values (Fisher\u27s Exact Test;p=0.152) call for caution when interpreting their impact. The studyconcluded that trained female missionaries in RCCG show high levels ofmission engagement and positively perceive marital considerations. Thestudy recommended that the Church protect female missionaries\u27 well-being, expose senior pastors to missions training, and incentivise thoseprioritising mission work over marital status

Information on the use of Eepo –Ira; Bridelia Ferruginea by Yoruba people and its side effects during marathon fasting

    Get PDF
Bridelia-ferruginea is a species of flowering plant in the family of Phyllanthaceae. It is native totropical Africa and is commonly found in savannas, woodlands, and grasslands. It is calledeepo-ira in Yoruba land, kwakwakwai in Hausa land and okpoukpaka in Ibo land. This researchfocuses on Yoruba people because they use eepo-ira for medication and they engage in religiousactivities and marathon fasting.Adaobi etal 2011 found that constituents of the stem bark ofBridelia-ferruginea possess antiulcer properties. Adewole etal 2021 discovered thatantidiarrheal activity possibly occurs via the activation of ATPases activities and inhibition ofM3 and EP3. While Bridelia-ferruginea is considered safe for use in traditional medicine, thereare potential side effects and interactions to consider, especially when combined with marathonfasting. Some possible side effects and considerations include: Gastrointestinal upset asBridelia-ferruginea may cause stomach upset, nausea, and diarrhea in some individuals, allergicreactions as some people may be allergic to Bridelia-ferruginea, which can cause symptoms likehives, itching, and difficulty in breathing, interactions with medications as Bridelia-ferrugineamay interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners, diabetes medications, and bloodpressure medications. It was found from the people interviewed that marathon fasting can leadto dehydration, while Bridelia-ferruginea may exacerbate this effect due to its potential diureticproperties. Fasting can also disrupt electrolyte balances, and Bridelia-ferruginea may furtheralter electrolyte levels, potentially leading to muscle cramps, weakness, and other symptoms.Bridelia-ferruginea may lower blood sugar levels, which can be problematic when combinedwith marathon fasting, potentially leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Fasting can leadto nutrient deficiencies, and Bridelia-ferruginea may further deplete certain nutrients, such aspotassium, magnesium, and vitamin B12
