The Effect of Digitalization on the Performance of Manufacturing Firms in South-West Nigeria

    Get PDF
Adopting digitalization by manufacturing firms will increase and improve output and generate additional employment for downstream skilled labour in the production process. However, there is the possibility of job loss, affecting unskilled workers the most. The Nigerian manufacturing sector must undergo critical structural changes (dynamic shifts caused by technological innovation) required to drive economic growth and development. This study examines the effect of digitalization on the performance of manufacturing firms in South-West Nigeria using a sample of 45 randomly selected medium- and large-sized manufacturing firms across Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states. The study employed the Ordinary Least Square and descriptive analytical techniques to analyze the data collected. The results revealed that 74.3% of firms upgrade their digital machines as needed, while over 50% have only minimally digitalized their work structures, operations, and production processes. This limited digitalization affects their competitiveness and revenue generation, impacting overall economic growth. Digitalization efforts focus on digital communication equipment for work structures and operations, with less emphasis on production processes that drive productivity. The regression results showed that digitalization had no significant effect on the performance of manufacturing firms, likely due to the low level of digitalization in their processes and operations. The study recommends upgrading employees\u27 skills, especially digital skills, as labour significantly affects manufacturing output. Skills upgrades will help the sector adapt to new technologies, enhancing revenue and competitiveness

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has revolutionized various aspects of modern society, including how we work, communicate, and access information. While these innovations have brought numerous benefits, they have also raised concerns about their impact on mental health and well-being. This paper presentation aims to explore the multifaceted relationship between digital transformation and mental well-being, focusing on both the positive and negative implications. In recent years, the proliferation of social media platforms, online gaming, and digital communication tools has fundamentally altered the way individuals interact and perceive themselves and others. On one hand, these technologies have facilitated connections and provided platforms for self-expression, potentially enhancing social support networks and overall well-being. However, excessive use and dependency on digital devices have also been associated with negative outcomes such as increased feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, the digitalization of work processes has transformed traditional employment structures, offering flexibility and efficiency but also blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. This phenomenon raises important questions about work-related stress, burnout, and the erosion of work-life balance in the digital age. Understanding the complex interplay between digital transformation and mental health is essential for developing strategies to promote mental health and well-being in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, this paper aim to uncover innovative approaches to harness the benefits of digitalization while mitigating its potential harms on mental health and well-being

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, technological innovation plays a pivotal role in shaping the dynamics of the industry. This paper examines the impact of technological advancements on employee engagement within the Nigerian media industry. The objectives of the paper are to examine the extent of technological innovation adopted by media organizations in Nigeria, and to identify the factors influencing employee engagement in the context of technological innovation. The paper is anchored on technological determinism theory to explain the influence of technological innovations in the media industry. The paper notes that technological innovation significantly influences employee engagement in the Nigerian media industry. Also, media organizations that embrace technological advancements tend to have higher levels of employee engagement compared to those that lag behind in innovation. In addition, employees perceive technological innovation as an opportunity for skill enhancement, job enrichment, and improved communication within the workplace, leading to heightened engagement levels. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of aligning technological innovation with organizational culture and leadership practices to maximize its positive impact on employee engagement in the Nigerian media industry. By fostering a culture of innovation, providing adequate support, and addressing challenges proactively, media organizations can harness the transformative power of technology to cultivate engaged, motivated, and productive workforce.&nbsp

This study investigates the substantial correlation between cloud computing policy and the provision of healthcare services at state-owned hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria. It employs primary and secondary research methods. With the aid of sample size determination, the study realised that 145 questionnaire and stratified sampling techniques were adopted which enabled the study to distribute the questionnaire among the selected respondents which including medical doctors, matron/midwives, laboratory scientists/technologists, nurses, accountants, and records personnel. Regression analysis was used to analyse the data collected from the selected respondents. The study\u27s findings reveal that, despite the implementation of cloud computing, there has been no improvement in service delivery for health record-keeping in Nigeria. Consequently, the study suggests that failure to identify problems and provide appropriate solutions could further compromise the efficacy of record-keeping service delivery. This study proposes several recommendations, including the need for policymakers to provide extensive training to staff responsible for managing health records technology. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of ongoing policy evaluation and monitoring to guarantee effective communication of policies. This will enable policymakers to identify areas of uncertainty and address them, thereby facilitating effective service delivery in Nigeria

The regulatory framework for insurance business in Nigeria is overseen by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM). NAICOM is responsible for the regulation and supervision of all insurance companies and intermediaries operating in Nigeria. Overall, the regulatory framework in Nigeria has improved over the years, but there are still areas that need improvement. In order to broaden the scope of the regulatory action by the regulators, the paper selected the questions for research as an analysis of the legal regime and framework for insurance regulation in Nigeria and the challenges consequent thereto. The insurance industry is unquestionably a significant source of revenue for economies all over the world, In Nigeria, the difficulties have had more negative impact than positive impact on the industry\u27s expected growth and development, leading to public apathy and discouragement. The Insurance Act of 2003 neither anticipated nor included these difficulties nor did it make any provisions for addressing them. Aside from them, the Act had good intentions because it led to many significant advancements in the insurance industry. However, a review or analysis of the aforementioned issues revealed opportunities for future development. It also highlighted the main causes of the institution\u27s current setbacks and disinterest. The necessity of regulating the business has been emphasised, as has the value of insurance to society and economic development. With an explanation of the legislation supporting the exercise, the context of regulation was first explored. It was determined that regulation relates to both the institutions and the norms that apply to the industr

Globally, technological advancements are at an all-time high. This evolution presents unprecedented opportunities for growth and development for Nigeria and the continent of Africa. On a global scale, the former, based on the growth of its startup ecosystem, ranked 2nd in the hierarchy of advanced ecosystems in Africa and 131st among 190 countries in 2019 globally. Presently, startup businesses are springing up at a very fast rate all over the world. This is,however, not without the incidences of cybercrime, environmental factors, funding challenges, and other problems. This led to the need to regulate the startup business ecosystem and the enactment of the Nigeria Startup Act 2022. This paper is an overview of the said Act. It examines its operations and objectivesfor stakeholders involved in startup business and its adequacy as a legal framework regulating an emerging startup ecosystem in Nigeria. In conclusion, the paper offers recommendations forsustaining startup seed funds through the provision of regulations limiting the amount investable per time and the recovery time limit. An increase in incentives to support the growth of startups is also suggested. Companies seeking to be registered as a startup but are still undergoing incorporation processes should be given a provisional label to allow them to start, while registration of the startup label focusing on local markets is advocated fo
