INFLUENCE OF FAMILY BACKGROUND ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN ENUGU EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
This study examined the influence of family background on the
academic performance of primary school pupils in Enugu East Local
Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The study was anchored on Abraham
Maslow’s Theory of Motivation. The study adopted a descriptive survey research
design. Two specific objectives guided the study: To ascertain the extent to which
parental educational background influences pupils’ academic performance, and
to find out the extent to which parental socio-economic status influences pupils’
academic performance. The study targeted pupils, teachers, and parents. The
sample size of the study was 337; 286 primary six pupils, 17 teachers and 34
parents from seventeen public primary schools. Simple random sampling
technique was used to select the pupils’ participants of the study, automatic
inclusion was used for the teachers and convenient sampling technique was used
for the parents. The study used focus group discussion schedule, questionnaire,
and interview schedule to collect data. Mean and standard deviation were used
to answer the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that parental
socio-economic status highly influences pupils’ academic performance. Also,
that parental educational background influences pupils’ academic performance
to a very high extent. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the school
management and teachers should help to sensitize the parents on the importance
of the family on the pupils’ holistic formation especially their academic
performance
Taxation as a Significant Tool for Economic Development
This research work assessed taxation as a significant tool for economic development. The Ordinary least Square
(OLS) linear regression model was adopted to estimate the variables. This involves estimation of the model to
examine if taxation as a significant tool for economic development in Nigeria. Different proxies for measuring
taxation including stamp duties, value added tax for import and non-import, gas income tax, petroleum profit
tax, company income tax and capital gains tax was sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical
Bulletin, 2020. Linear estimation techniques aimed at achieving unique parameter estimates. The findings
reveal that capital income tax, VAT for import and non-import are found to have a statistically significant
positive effect on the economic development of Nigeria at 5% significance level. However other predictors
variables may have a potential effect on the economic development of Nigeria but are statistically not
significant
The Impact of Firm Size on Financial Decision Making in Nigeria
The study empirically investigated the impact of firm size on financial decision-making in 30 companies listed
on the Nigerian stock exchange with a panel data set spanning the years 2010 to 2020. Total revenue is used
as the proxy for firm size, and the total debt to total assets and total assets are used as the proxies for financial
decision-making. Consistent with the pecking order theory, the results reveal a significant positive relationship
between the size of a firm and financial decision-making in Nigerian firms. The empirical results show that
bigger firms make significant financial decisions; bigger firms make better financing and investment decisions.
Return on assets and leverage have positive implications for financial decision-making. As a response, the study
proposes that businesses should concentrate on growing their size by increasing turnover and expanding into
new markets for existing and new products
ETHICS, DEMOCRACY AND MASS MEDIA: A NECESSARY WHEEL FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA
Ethics, democracy and mass media are interconnected like a triangle and necessary for a
better society. The media disseminate information in the society. Democracy is a people’s
centered government practiced with ethical principles and publicize through the media. In a
democratic society, where the decision of the masses is supreme, mass media is instrumental
in ensuring that the people make informed decisions with moral supervision. Ethics on the
other hand, sets out principles that helps in breeding morality in media and democracy. In
order to help the media or democracy fulfil its aim of providing reliable information, or good
governance ethical codes are required. However, it is through the media that the masses are
able to voice their opinions. And without ethics media and democracy will collapse and vice
versa. In these regards, this paper postulate that the mass media, ethics and democracy are
like a circled wheel of a society necessary for good governance in Nigeria
BOKO HARAM, HERDSMEN ISSUES AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY IN NIGERIA
The study examined issues of Boko Haram and Herdsmen activities on agricultural
productivity in Nigeria for the period of 2009 to 2019. The specific objectives of the
study were to ascertain whether Boko Haram and Herdsmen issues significantly affect
agricultural productivity in Nigeria, to find out whether unemployment significantly
affect agricultural productivity in Nigeria, to determine whether corruption perception
index significantly affect agricultural productivity in Nigeria and to examine whether
government institutions significantly affect agricultural productivity in Nigeria. The
study utilized secondary data for unemployment rate, corruption perception index and
agricultural productivity sourced from CBN Statistical bulletin, government institutions were from World Development Index and Boko Haram and Herdsmen activities
were dummied. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimating technique was employed in analyzing the regression model data. Agricultural Output was the dependent
variable, while Boko-Haram and Herdsmen Activities, unemployment, corruption perception index and government institutions were the explanatory variables. Results indicated that variables (Boko-Haram and Herdsmen Activities, Unemployment, and
Corruption Perception Index) were statistically significant at 5% level of significance.
The implication is that these three variables were significantly causing short run
changes in agricultural productivity in Nigeria. In the light of the findings of this study,
the following recommendations were made; supports in the form of human power, materials, money, intelligence, arms and ammunitions at domestic level must be eliminated, lands should be earmarked as grazing fields for cattle and other livestock so as
to curb the excesses of Herdsmen and the host communities and that, government
should be religious on the implementation of empowerment programmes aimed at creating employment opportunities for the young school leavers and graduates of higher
institutions of learning in the country
Contemporary Tax Controversies: Lessons from Developed Nations
One of the major challenges confronting tax
jurisdictions all over the world is generating
tax revenues that will at least be sufficient to
take care of public sector expenditure
requirements under an equitable, growth -
friendly, fair and economically efficient tax
system. A number of tax issues are currently
being discussed globally in an effort to
achieve that objective. Global taxes have also
been proposed. This study intends to review
those trending global tax matters with the
aim of finding out what they are and how they
are being addressed by developed countries.
The materials for the study are obtained from
peer-reviewed articles published in Research
Gate, Goggle Scholar and Science Direct,
among others, as well as publications by
some public authorities and notable
international organizations. It finds that the
entire global tax system is far from being
ideal. Several countries under the Globe are
found putting a lot of strategies in place
jointly and severally in an attempt to fix the
global tax and international taxation
challenges. Some international bodies like
the Organization for Economic Co-operation
and Development, the European Union,
World Health Organization, the G-20, and
others are equally lending their support to
make the dream a reality. This study
concludes that while some of the global tax
proposals appear inappropriate or
inadequately designed, others deserve
serious attention
An overview of insecticide usage and resistance of insect vector to insecticide: An implication to public health
: Insecticides are highly effective when optimally implemented and crop damage from insect pest infestations
and diseases transmitted by insect vectors often result in serious consequences, warranting the need to use insecticides.
The main strategy for the elimination of insect vectors is the use of chemical insecticides. Since its discovery, chemical
insecticides have represented the most widely method used to control insect vectors and insect pests. The use of
insecticides has helped to reduce insect-borne diseases. However, despite their benefits, insecticides pose potential
danger to public health when inappropriately handled. Almost all public health insecticide classes and nearly 90% of all
insecticides worldwide are used for agricultural purposes. The insecticide resistance development in disease vectors are
as a result of selection pressure due to agrochemicals and this occur in places where pesticides are more frequently
applied, indiscriminately used and misused. Despite increasing concern about overuse and misuse of insecticides in
developing countries, insecticide is still intensively used and the massive use of these chemicals have caused detrimental
effects on the agroecosystem, such as the acquisition of resistance, pest resurgence/replacement, and environmental
pollution. Insecticide resistance may increase insect’s vectorial capacity, which may lead to a dramatic increase in the
transmission of the disease and even to a higher prevalence than in the absence of insecticides. Disease control failure,
however follow from vector control failure. Increase in diseases transmission, mortality, injury to the crop and potential
losses in crop production, disruption of biological control programmes and increase in management costs for additional
chemical controls to prevent further injury are the consequences of insect resurgence, replacement and or resistance
International Agency (USID) and Democratic Elections: A Prognosis to the Role of Security Personnels in Nigerian 2015 Elections
This study examined the role of an international Agency (USAID) and Democratic Election; A Prognosis to the role
of Security Personnel in Nigerian 2015 Elections. USAID and other international Agencies have relentlessly assisted both the
emerging and consolidating democracies such as Nigeria, in conducting free and fair elections via provision of some forms of
technical assistance so as to achieve credible elections and ensure improved governance but in spite of all these, events and
happenings from developed democracies and across the globe have shown that the vitality of election security to the credibility of
elections cannot be ignored because the conduct of free and fair elections to a large extent depend on the security system available
in the country. This study anchored on Elite theory propounded by Paredo and Gaetano with descriptive qualitative method of data
collection and Content analysis. It discovered that the fact that consistently undermined democratic consolidation in Nigeria is the
varying degrees and measures of electoral violence so it therefore recommends that impartial and unbiased security agencies should
be recruited for each election in order to prevent the reoccurrence of electoral violence during each electio
SEPARATION AND INFRARED (FT-IR) CHARACTERIZATION OF AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS FROM HIGH BOILING FRACTIONS (>200 oC) OF NIGERIA CRUDE OIL (USING TRICHLOROETHYLENE AS THE ELUANT)
The separation and characterization of aromatic hydrocarbons from high boiling fractions (>200°C) of Nigeria
crude oil is reported. The crude oil was distilled under atmospheric pressure in a glass system, with the help of a paraffin
bath. The bottom fraction of the crude oil was fractionated using solvent deasphaltening (in which case n-heptane was used
followed by filtration), and elution - adsorption chromatography. The saturates were eluted with n-heptane by liquid
chromatography on silica gel while the aromatics were eluted with trichlorethylene. The l.R. analysis of the aromatic
extracts showed absorption peaks at 3082.94 cm-1, 3037.06cm-1, 1584.82cm-1, l557.09cm-1, l497.43cm-1, 1247.97cm-1,
931.79cm-1, 907.36cm-1, 841 .53cm-1, 676.46cm-1 and 629.49cm-1 respectively. These absorption peaks are due to the
presence of aromatics hydrocarbon
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMPENSATION SYSTEMS OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA: THE IMPLICATION O PERFORMANCE
This study investigated thecompensation systems adopted in the Nigerian universities by evaluating
the implications of such systems on staff performance. Specifically, the work evaluatedthe degree to
which extrinsic compensation systems affect staff commitment in the Nigerian universities and
ascertained the effect of intrinsic compensation systems on turnover intentions in the Nigerian
universities. The survey design was adopted with a population of 1,588 staff, from two randomly
selected universities in Enugu State, Nigeria. The universities are Enugu State University of Science
and Technology and Coal City University, Public University and Private University respectively. They
were purposively selected. A sample size of 591 was drawn. The closed-ended (structured)
questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data from the respondents. Results showed that
extrinsic compensation systems affect staff commitment in the Nigerian universities(R-coefficient =
.711; p< 0.05).Further, there is significant effect of intrinsic compensation systems on turnover
intentions in the Nigerian universities(R-coefficient = .724; p< 0.05).The study among others,
recommended that there should be ensuring group cohesiveness amongst members of a group. So,
group performance should be rewarded by allowances and bonuses by the universities management as
a result of the group’s input
