E-learning has become an increasingly popular learning approach in higher education due to the rapid growth of internet technologies. E-learning is a shift from traditional mode of learning or training to a more personalized, flexible, self-organized, collaborative ICT-based community of learners. Hence, its use otherwise referred to as e-learning engagement is described as the measure of behaviour students display or effort applied while participating in a technology mediated learning. Today, the disruption of learning caused by Covid-19, incessant strikes, insecurity leading to closure of schools etc has more than ever necessitated its adoption in research learning areas like grant writing, synopsis writing, instrumentation, research design and publication. Perhaps, effective utilization of e-learning is seen to be influenced by a number of factors hence the perceived poor performance of postgraduate students in research. Thus, the major purpose of this study was to determine the ICT skills, e-learning engagement and learners' interest as correlates of students' performance in Research Method in universities in Enugu State. Findings of the study confirm that for a better academic performance to be achieved, students' active engagement in e-learning is crucial. By using linear regression analysis, the study verified that significant relationship exists between the level of e-learning engagement and students' academic achievement in research method. It was therefore recommended, among others, that the Ministry of Education should adequately fund higher institutions in Nigeria towards incorporating e-learning resources and platforms such as cloud learning, blended learning models, mobile learning, MOOCS, among other required to create continuous learning that meets learners' interests and aspirations in this knowledge driven economy

BIOAUGMENTATION STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE METHANE PRODUCTION FROM LIGNOCELLULOSIC SUBSTRATES: DYNAMICS OF THE PROKARYOTIC COMMUNITY STRUCTURE

    Get PDF
Optimization of anaerobic digestion (AD) of lignocellulosic substrates via bioaugmentation for enhanced biomethane production is imperative. Here, eight different screened bacterial isolates were used to augment different batch anaerobic digesters that comprised freshly chopped water hyacinth (WH) and cow dung (CD), at 2% total solids (w/v). Methane production was monitored at intervals and DNA metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA genes revealed the dynamics of the prokaryotic community structure of the anaerobic digesters. Obtained results suggest bioaugmentation improved the abundance and diversity of the prokaryotic community. The treatment that was inoculated with Serratia marcescens produced the highest cumulative methane of 0.68 L, 45.6% methane more than the consortium treatment. A shift from Pseudomonas to Bacteroides was observed in the bacterial community at the genus taxonomic level after AD while Methanosarcina dominated the archaeal genera. Furthermore, independent bioaugmentation of AD of different substrates such as water hyacinth, cow dung, and cellulose powder with identified model bioaugmentation agent, Serratia marcescens portrayed a positive effect with regards to methane production when compared with the control treatment. This study represents an economic and environmentally friendly approach of single isolate inoculation (bioaugmentation) in optimizing methane production from lignocellulosic substrates such as water hyacinth

Leather is a unique commodity that links grassroots villages with high societies and traditional practices with emerging technologies. For many developing countries, leather and leather manufacturers constitute an indispensable and dependable source for export trade and foreign exchange earnings. It is therefore, evident that for a society to attain economic growth, she must be a producing society and one that engages in export of her finished products. For this to be achieved, the society must be one that is industrialized. Aba has, within few decades since Nigeria’s independence, made some significant gains in the leather industry especially being manufacturer and exporter of leather products (footwear, bag, belt and furniture). This was seen in 1970, when the people of Aba whom, after the Nigeria/Biafra war made a significant shift from production of rubber foot wears to leather works, with the aim of reeling out from the devastating effects of the war. By 2019, the leather industry in Aba had received some meaningful attention from government both; the state and federal government, especially, the administration of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu. Despite the progress made, Aba leather works manufacturers are still struggling to compete with her foreign counterparts, for instance Italy and China. What could be the cause? Is there any link between the leather industry and Aba in terms of economic growth? In achieving this, a qualitative historical research method was used. Qualitative research is a critical description of past events presented in a chronologically and thematically way. Data was derived from primary (findings derived from observation of the area and oral interviews conducted) and secondary sources of information (books, journal articles) to fill this gap that will be of immense value. It is on this premise that this paper argues that, though, the leather industry in Aba has affected the economic growth of the people positively but it is faced with numerous challenges. It concluded by proffering recommendations where necessary

Evaluation of Teaching and Learning Using Formative Assessment for Sustainable Development Goals

    No full text
This article focuses on the achievement of sustainable development with the use of formative assessment for quality education. Quality Education is the 4th goal of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It aims at ensuring inclusive and equitable education for all, and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all. Formative assessment has an essential role to play in the teaching and learning process that can bring about quality education. Evaluation is conducted to find out what worked, what did not work, what needs changing before you reiterate the course. Evaluation looks at the extent of progress being made in learning. It does this through measurement tools, and one of these tools is educational assessment; formative and summative. Formative assessment is assessment forlearning. It aims at enhancing learning. It helps the teacher to prepare the students for future achievement.Formative assessment also helps teachers to know the extent of the achievement of instructional objectives. It helps teachers to regularly (daily) assess student’s progress in their learning of a subject. Formative assessment is not interested in just passing examination but rather in the integral formation of the learner so that the learner can have a better future. For a sustainable development, learning must prepare students and learners of all ages to find solutions for the challenges of today and the future. This is what formative assessment does for the learner. It is transformative and therefore, helps learners to make informed decisions and take individual and collective action to change our societies and care for the planet

    No full text
The paper examines the question of identity and nationality following the independence of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011. The fallout was the stripping of 500,000 South Sudanese residents in Khartoum of their Sudanese citizenship after a nine-month grace and over eight million residents in communities in South Sudan remained in legal limbo until insurance of citizenship slips. Data for the paper were generated from newspapers, journals, and books analysed qualitatively using the historical approach, The results showed that the 2011 Sudan Nationality Act that abrogated the 1994 Act, which had provisions for dual nationality for both countries, and the 2005 agreement made it the fundamental right if either parent shared either nationality. At the same time, South Sudan adopted it Citizenship Act of 2011 and these laws enacted by both countries introduced ethno-identity into Sudanese nationality. In the same vein, the constitution of South Sudan gave certain preconditions for the acquisition of its citizenship, with emphasis on birth and naturalization. The logistical and manpower needed to carry out the processing of the citizenship documentation were slow and in short supply and complicated by discriminatory acts against some ethnic groups, making most people to adopt measures to avoid statelessness. The paper further revealed that the March 13, 2012 agreement on documentation of citizens included freedom of residence, economic activity, property rights and movements for citizens of the other party living in their territory instituted a platform for addressing the gaps in the nationality and identity question of the people of South Sudan

PROBLEMS OF ENFORCEMENT OF FLOATING CHARGE IN NIGERIA

    No full text
Finance is a very fundamental requirement for any business. Sequel to this, companies are allowed to borrow money for the purpose of executing their businesses in accordance with the statutory provisions and their memorandum and articles of association. Lenders in order to ensure that they recoup their money where the borrower company is unable to pay their debts will normally demand the security which they can dispose to recoup their money. This gave rise to charges on the property of such companies. There are two major forms of charges, fixed charge and floating charge. This article examines the problems of the enforcement of a floating charge in Nigeria. The paper vigorously demonstrates that there are certain statutory provisions which constitute problems in the enforcement of floating charge in Nigeria. These include preferential creditors which affect the priority of floating charges, defective floating charge which affects its validity, the requirement of applications to court for direction by the receiver/manager for every steps he takes in the performance of his function, cost of liquidation which diminishes the assets available for the floating charge holders. It is recommended that floating charge as a form of security should be preserved sequel to its freedom for the debtor to dispose of the property secured in ordinary course of business and .the attachment of the charge to after acquired property of the company falling within the description of the securit

The 6.7 keV thermal emission lines in the stellar flare spectra of two chromospherically active Binaries: Algol and GT Mus

    Get PDF
Chromospherically active binaries’ (CABs) are late-type evolved stars with strong chromosphere/coronae and high flare activity levels. Starspot evolution in these CABs and binaries reveals strong stellar and chromospheric activities. In binaries, the tidal interaction via the internal dynamo motion, during rapid rotation of the component stars generates magnetic fields. The magnetic activity heats the tenuous coronal plasma, and the reconnection of energetic particles leads to stellar flare formation. Cyclic-variation signatures in brightness and emission lines are indicators of coronal/chromospheric activities. The spatial population densities of CABs are large, and their hard energy spectral characteristics are prominent in our galaxy. Photo-ionization/collisional excitation processes in the coronae of CABs generate a strong thermal emission line at 6.7 keV. In the present work, we re-analyzed stellar flare data of two CABs (Algol & GT Muscae) observed with Suzaku. We resolved the 6.7 keV emission spectrum and equivalent width (EW) in each source’s stellar flare data. The resolved energy spectra are remarkably similar to that of the hard energy spectra at 6.7 keV of X-ray point sources observed in different Galactic regions. The EW of the 6.7 keV emission line obtained in this work compares favorably with the EW range (260 eV – 980 eV) of the 6.7 keV energy spectra of Galactic point sources. Hence, cumulative X-ray emission lines of coronal plasma (and their EWs) emitted by numerous point sources in different Galactic plane positions give clues on the Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission (GRXE) mechanism. We are of the view that CABs could account for a large number of fast-transient X-ray sources that emit thermal emission line at 6.7 keV during their quiescent and flared phases, and these underlying population sources could contribute significantly to the total luminosity of 6.7 keV GRXE

In this paper we examined the effect of concept mapping instructional strategy on students’ academic achievement in senior secondary school Mathematics. The study adopted quasi-experimental design which involves a pretest, posttest, non-randomization, and non-equivalent control group. The population of the study consists of thirty- four thousand three hundred and twelve (34 312) SS2 students in all the senior secondary schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu state. The sample was made up of three hundred and ninety -five (395) SS2 students from the five secondary schools purposively sampled from the thirty-one (31) secondary schools in the zone. There were two treatment groups: experimental group (strategy) and control group (traditional). Data were analyzed using ANCOVA and the result showed that students taught using concept mapping instructional strategy achieved higher than students taught without. The findings of the study point out that students taught using concept mapping instructional strategy performed higher, help learners learn independently and show superiority over students taught by traditional methods. A major implication of this study is that mathematics teachers should avoid dominating the teaching and learning in the Mathematics classroom as this may be harmful to students. The researcher recommended among others that the government should encourage and mount workshops for serving teachers on the use of concept mapping instructional strategy in their instructions. Also, this instructional strategy should be improved upon so as to reduce students’ mass failure in Mathematics examination
