INFLUENCE OF BIG BROTHER NAIJA 2019 (PEPPER DEM) REALITY TV SHOW ON THE SOCIAL LIFE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF IMO STATE UNIVERSITY
This study investigated the influence of Big Brother Naija 2019 (Pepper Dem) reality TV show
on the social life of undergraduate students of Imo State University, Owerri. The study was
anchored on cultivation theory. The researchers adopted survey research design using
questionnaire as instrument of data collection. The total population of the study was 20,000
students. The Taro Yamane's formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 396. A total of 396
copies of questionnaire were distributed to the selected departments in the eleven (11) faculties
of the University. The study used the multistage sampling technique in selecting respondents for
the study. The findings of this study revealed that BBNaija reality TV show has wide viewership
among undergraduate students of Imo State University as 76.2% of the students watch the show
in the evenings on daily bases. It also revealed that the students are not negatively influenced by
what they watch on the reality show but have been positively influenced, as 72.5% of the students
noted that they have been influenced in the areas of living peacefully with their roommates,
neighbours and hostel mates. The researchers concluded that undergraduate students of Imo
State University are not negatively influenced by BBNaija reality TV show despite their heavy
viewership. The study recommended that the subsequent shows should reflect more educational
content, indigenous Nigerian cultures and serve as a channel for transporting Nigerian and
African culture to the outside world
EFFECT OF THE STATE JOINT LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACCOUNT ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN ENUGU STATE,NIGERIA
The study determined the Effects of State Joint Local Government Account on Rural Development in Enugu State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study sought to: determine the effects of the State Joint Local Government Account on health care services in Enugu State, Nigeria; find out how State Local Government Account Policy affected rural road maintenance services in Enugu State, Nigeria and Ascertain the effects of State Joint Local Government account on improved educational service delivery in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study was guided by three research questions and hypotheses. The study adopted survey design. The researcher made use of primary and secondary data sources. The population of the study was 644,670. The sample size of 400 was determined through the use of Taro Yamane formular. Chi-square test was used to test the hypotheses. The finding revealed that State Joint Local Government Account did not significantly impact on health care service delivery in Enugu State, Nigeria; that State Local Government Account policy had positively impacted on rural road maintenance services in Enugu State, Nigeria. This implies that rural roads are more accessible with the road maintenance of the Local Government authority and that State Joint Local Government Account had not significantly improved educational service delivery in Enugu State, Nigeria. This fulfilled the aim of the joint account system which is to drive good governance and effective service delivery, and overall grassroots development. The study recommended the abolition of the state joint local government account law or a major review of some of its provisions especially sections 162(6)and(8) to allow the local governments access their federal allocations directly and improve in the delivery of services to the rural people
EVIDENCE-BASED PREFERENTIAL IN VITRO ANTISICKLING MECHANISM OF THREE NATIVE NIGERIAN PLANTS USED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE
Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary genetic disease caused by the substitution of glutamic acid by valine at beta six (β-6) position of the hemoglobin; the clinical implication is that the erythrocyte contains the hemoglobin polymerizes, leading to severe clinical consequences. Therefore, we investigated the antisickling mechanism of Ficus thonningii (FTH), Jatropha tanjorensis (JTR) and Justicia carnae (JCN) native to Southeast Nigeria used in the management of sickle cell disease. The experiment was designed to include erythrocyte fragility, erythrocyte reversibility and polymerization inhibition mechanisms. The results obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey Posthoc test. From the results of the erythrocyte fragility test, it was observed that at 0.35% saline concentration, FTH, JTR and JCN extracts reduced hemolysis to 26.548±0.056%, 18.055±0.064%, and 20.217±0.035% respectively while hydroxyurea (control drug) reduced hemolysis to 14.459±0.040%. In the presence of the control, the
percentage number of sickle cells was 91.001±0.170% whereas, hydroxyurea was 30.414±0.162% while, extracts of FTH, JTR and JCN reduced sickling to 49.818±0.082%, 41.001±0.413% and 33.957±0.062% respectively. Also, the results of
the polymerization inhibition analysis showed that extracts of FTH, JTR and JCN had relative percentage polymerization inhibition of 76.888±0.042%, 48.723±0.113% and 75.447±0.063%, respectively, in comparison to hydroxyurea which inhibited sickle erythrocyte polymerization by 70.903±0.150%. The results of our findings suggest the
preferential but variable antisickling mechanism of the studied extracts; hence, the leaves of the assayed plants contain potential antisickling phytochemicals and should
be explored further for their antisickling benefits
Prevalence of Hypertension in a rural community in southeast Nigeria; an opportunity for early intervention
Background
Hypertension is a leading cause of non-communicable morbidity in Sub Saharan Africa. Recent studies
suggest and increase in the prevalence of hypertension in rural Sub Saharan Africa.
Methods
Using a
three-phase approach, the WHO STEPS-wise approach to surveillance of noncommunicable
diseases was used to determine the prevalence of hypertension in a rural settlement is Enugu State,
Southeast Nigeria. Blood pressure measurement was done according to the guidelines of the European
Society of Hypertension.
Results
Out of 1576 participants aged 18 years and above, 976 (74.9%) completed the full survey and their blood
pressure was measured, and data analysed. The prevalence of hypertension was 27.3%, (95%CI 24.5
30.2); similar in males (28.8, 95%CI 24.1-33.9) and females 166(26.4%, 95%CI 23.0-30.0). p= 0.415. The
prevalence of hypertension increased with age reaching a peak of 33.6% (95%CI 25.7-42.1) among people
aged 50-59 years. P= 0.06. The age-related increase in the prevalence of hypertension was statistically
signi cant in males (p=0.04) but not in females. (p=0.15). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels
correlated with older age and higher fasting blood glucose levels while diastolic blood pressure negatively
correlated with level of education. Awareness of hypertension was low (7.9%).
Conclusion
The prevalence of hypertension in a rural southeastern Nigeria community is 27.3%, however awareness
was very low (7.9%). Most participants had mild hypertension thus offering a window of opportunity for
public health educators in preventing the complication of hypertension. There is therefore the need for
awareness campaigns to be intensi ed in rural communities
EXAMINING THE EXTENT TO WHICH INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA ARE PROVIDED FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GOVERNMENT STUDIES CURRICULUM IN THE RURAL AND URBAN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE
This study examines the extent to which instructional media are provided for the
implementation of government studies curriculum in the rural and urban senior
secondary education. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study,
using extent to which instructional media are provided for the implementation of
government curriculum studies questionnaire (EIPIGC). The population for this study
was made up of 348 teachers that teach Government as a school subject in all the 283
senior secondary schools in the rural and urban schools in Enugu State. They comprise
180 and 168 Government teachers in rural and urban secondary schools respectively
(Statistics and Planning Unit of Ministry of Education, Enugu 2012/2013).
Purposive sampling technique was used in getting the sample size. The sample for the
study consisted of the three hundred and forty-eight (348) teachers that teach
government in the six education zones in Enugu State. One research question and one
hypothesis guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire
captioned “Extent to which instructional media are provided for the implementation
of government studies curriculum in the rural and urban senior secondary schools.”
The instrument was validated by 3 experts, 2 of them in Curriculum and Instruction,
and 1 in Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was
determined using Cronbach Alpha. Alpha value was found to be 0.83, indicating high
reliability of the instrument for the study. The research question was answered using
mean and grand mean ratings, while the hypothesis was tested using t-test statistics
at .05 level of significance and a critical value of 1.96
Determination of Coking Properties and Heat Values of Coals from Parts of Benue Trough and Anambra Basin for their Industrial and Domestic Uses
A total of six coal samples labeled (AGB, EHA, INY, LAF, OHN, and SHJ) were collected within our map area and
sent to the laboratory for standard proximate analyses for ranking of the coals based on ASTM D388 – 05 standard
classifications of coal ranks. The coal parameters obtained from the laboratory are moisture content (Mc), volatile
matter (Vm), fixed carbon (Fc), ash content (Ac), sulphur content (Sc), mineral content (Mc), heating values (Hv),
calorific values (Cv), fuel ratio (Fr), and free swell index (Fsi). The values of these parameters show that two (LAF,
SHJ) of the six coal samples are of high ranking and are of bituminous grade while the other four (AGB, EHA, INY,
and OHN) coal samples are of lower rank and are of sub-bituminous grade. The bituminous coals in Lafia-Obi and
Shankodi-Jangwa areas are of large quantities and are used for production of coke used in blast furnaces for
production of steel. It can also be used for domestic heating especially where anthracite is not available. The subbituminous coals located in Agbogugu, Eha-Etiti, Inyi, and Ohandiagu are of very large quantity and are used in
generating steam for the production of electricity in power plants. In addition, sub-bituminous coals can be liquefied
and converted to petroleum and gas. However, the use of sub-bituminous coal can lead to hazardous emissions into the
environment especially harmful smoke, soot, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and mercury. The low sulphur content is
attributed to shallow marine depositional environment, which restricted sea water incursion during peat formation in
the Coalification process
Homo Oecologicus and the Priestly Duty of Adam, an Appraisal of Anthropogenic Environmental Degradation in Enugu East LGA
The ancient command “Man, know thyself” that reportedly confronted Socrates at the entrance to the Oracle of Delphi resonates with renewed tenacity in every age and clime. His dialectics consisted of a filtration of thought that aimed at eliminating ambiguities, clarifying ideas and certifying true knowledge/belief. This remains valid today as the present challenge of environmental degradation has roused a global outcry especially in the more recent times. This paper bothers on a deeper look at deforestation as a window to exploring humankind's self-understanding. Generally, in any form of degradation, human life and history are brought under threat. Though a former prerogative of the sciences, the urgency and vast implications of ecological crisis makes it imperative for philosophy to join the debates and discussions as a competent participant. This paper assumes that whatever concerns mankind, affects or shapes his life falls within the scope of the greater anthropological concern to which the Delphian dictum refers. Against this backdrop, this paper looks at environmental degradation from a philosophical anthropological viewpoint, hence the title. It uses deforestation as a sample case
RELEVANCE OF THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM IN CREATING NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN LEARNERS FOR SOCIETAL TRANSFORMATION
A feeling of love for and pride for one’s country is seen in many
learners in Africa. That conscious attempt to defend the course of one’s
country is mostly dominant in secondary school students. The school
curriculum enables them to create the awareness of this national
consciousness in them. Some of the secondary school subjects that enable
learners imbibe national consciousness are as follows: History, Social
Studies, Civic Education, Religion and National Values, and Citizenship
Education. National consciousness plays an important role in the socioeconomic and political developments in many nations especially in Africa.
Mostly, national consciousness promotes national unity, sustainable
development, peace, respect for diversity, co-existence, and patriotism.
This national consciousness is one of the educational objectives in Africa,
and it is being brought about by the school curriculum. National
consciousness provides the basis for national integration, bonding and
coalescing that reduces the differences among ethnic groups to the barest
minimum. It encourages them to work together to advance the nation’s
political, cultural, economic, social or psychological needs. Societal
transformation is the product of every curriculum. This is often fostered by
the awareness of the learner in the belief of their nation. This article is
solely content analysis based on literature search. It vividly brings out
scholars’ views on the vital position of the school curriculum in creating
national consciousness in learners, hence leading to sustainable societal
development
Audit Quality and Audit Fees: The Case of Listed Companies in the Nigerian Financial Services Sector
The study empirically investigated the relationship between audit quality and audit fees in companies listed on
the Nigerian stock exchange in the financial services sector with a panel data set spanning the years 2010 to
2020. The likelihood of employing the services of a Big4 audit firm is used as the proxy for audit quality. In
Nigerian companies, the data show a significant negative association between audit quality and audit size.
Leverage and firm size, the two explanatory variables, had an insignificant impact on audit quality. The
empirical findings suggest that high audit fees threaten auditors’ independence, which has a detrimental
impact on audit quality. As a result, the report recommends that policies and guidelines be developed to govern
and regulate the audit pricing process
Top-Level Executives' Knowledge and Accrual-Based Earnings Management
The study empirically investigated the impact of
top-level executives’ knowledge on accrual-
based earnings management in 30 companies
listed on the Nigerian stock exchange with a
panel data set spanning the years 2010 to 2020.
This study uses the Hribar and Collins (2002)
model and the Kothari et al. (2005) model to
calculate discretionary accruals. Consistent with
the agency theory, the result reveals a
significant negative relationship between the
top-level executives’ level of education and prior
experience with the practice of earnings
management for Nigerian firms. The empirical
results show that increased education level and
greater prior experience limits earning
manipulating activities of top-level executives.
Policy implications of the findings are discussed.
Thus, the study recommends that companies in
Nigerian firms should hire highly educated
executives and executives with substantial prior
experience because they mean fewer earnings
management practice
