MULTIPLE SOLUTION TASKS: AN APPROACH FOR ENHANCING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ MATHEMATICAL CREATIVITY
The Role of Gender Equality and Good Governance in Peacestudies: The Nigerian Experienc
Peace could be seen as an individual’s state of mind with ideal society that operates in
understanding, security and unity. The content of peace education programme must be problem solving
and related to the economic, political, cultural, or social conditions that constitute the conflicting
issues. Conflict resolution is a set of principles applied to encourage warring parties to seek peace.
This means that the conflict is resolved when the basic needs of the parties have been met or satisfied.
Conflict management refers to effort made to change the perceptions and attitudes of the people
involved (Odoh 2006) Gender Equality is the state of equal ease of access to resources and
opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision making and the
state of valuing different behaviour, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender. Good
governance is measured by 8 characteristics of participation rule of law, transparency,
responsiveness, consensus oriented, equity and inclusiveness, effectiveness and efficiency and
accountability. Using descriptive and analytical approach with anecdotal evidence gleaned from
qualitative and historical literature on peace. Gender discrimination, equality and governance from
traditional delegate system to modern system of governance from textbooks, library materials, oral
interview, participant observation and internet materials, key informant etc. The study revealed that
gender gap reduces productivity and diminishes contribution and does not only affect women’s well
being and that of their families but also imposes high cost on the economy through productive losses.
Development of a community or society is a collaborative effort of all citizens which can only be
possible when there is peace in that community or society. It is an indisputable fact that development
is about people and development is only sustainable to the extent to which human resources are
developed. Gender gap reduces productivity and diminishes contribution and does not only affect
women’s well-being and that of their families but also imposes high cost on the economy through
productive losses. Strict adherence to the principles of good governance will ensure that peace reigns
in Nigeria. Based on the finding, the study recommended amongst others that themes on good
governance and peace studies should be part of primary, secondary and tertiary institutions curricular
in Nigeria. Topics such as electoral rights and processes, and gender equality should be taught. This
will help in raising individuals that are gender sensitive, individuals who see people in their own rights
as human beings not males being superior to females
Phytochemical Composition and Anti-Obesity Effect of The Methanol Extract of Ziziphous Mucronata Leaves in Wistar Rats
The incidence of obesity is increasing tremendously, and it has been revealed that about 500 million adults are obese worldwide.
This study evaluated the anti-obesity potentials of methanol extract of Ziziphous mucronata leaves (MEZM) in male albino rats. The
extract obtained by standard methods was screened phytochemically and subjected to acute toxicity study using Lorkes method.
Obesity was induced in rats by daily feeding with high fat diet for 5 weeks. Only rats with an abdominal circumference (AC) of 20
cm, thoracic circumference (TC) of 17 cm and body mass index (BMI) of 0.68 g/cm2 and above respectively were considered obese
and used for the study. The obese rats were assigned into 5 groups (II- VI) of 12 rats per group replicated three times. Whereas the
rats in the normal control (group I) received normal growers mash diet and distilled water, the obese negative control (group II)
received the high fat diet and distilled water only, while the positive control (group III) received high fat diet, distilled water and
60 mg/kg b.wt of Orlistat. Graded doses of the extract (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg b.wt) were administered orally to groups IV, V
and VI respectively for 28 days. During the treatment, AC, TC, BW and BMI were measured weekly. Following the 28-day treatment
regimen, Rats were euthanized, and blood samples collected for serum lipid profile {Total cholesterol (Tchol), Triglycerides (TAG),
High density lipoprotein (HDL) and Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)} analyses. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of
tannins, saponins, phenols, steroids, flavonoids, and alkaloids in varying proportions. Acute toxicity results showed that the extract
had no toxic effect on the rats and the oral LD50 was estimated to be greater than 5000 mg/kg. The extract showed dose-dependent
anti-obesity effects as there was a significant (p< 0.05) decrease in AC, TC, BW and BMI of treated rats. The extract also significantly
(p< 0.05) reduced serum concentrations of Tchol, TAG and LDL but with a corresponding significant (p< 0.05) increase in HDL
concentration. It was concluded that Ziziphous mucronata extract possesses anti-obesity activity and could also play a significant
role in the management of obesity-related complications such as cardiovascular diseases
MANAGEMENT SUPPORT SERVICES AND TEACHERS’PRODUCTIVITY IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE SOUTH EAST NIGEERIA
The study investigated management support services as determinants of teachers’ productivity in public secondary schools in South-East, Nigeria. Two research questions were developed and answered and two hypotheses formulated and tested for the study. The design of the study was a correlational research design. The accessible population of the study is 28, 682 which comprised of 27,431 teachers and 1, 251 principals. A sample size of 679 respondents consisting 379 teachers and 300 principals from the three selected states of the South East. The sample for the study employed the multi-stage sampling technique precisely stratified-simple random sampling techniques. The instruments employed for data collection was structured questionnaires titled: Management Support Services Questionnaire (MSSQ) and Teachers Productivity Questionnaire (TPQ).The instruments were validated by three experts, two from Educational administration and planning, one expert from Measurement and Evaluation in Faculty of Education, Federal University Dutsin-ma. The reliability of the instruments MSSQ and TPQ were established through test re-test method. Data obtained were correlated using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) coefficient which yielded a correction coefficient of 0.84 and 0.85 respectively. The data collected through the administration of the instruments were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to answer research questions and Linear Regression to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that: there was a high extent of correlation between provision of adequate physical facilities and teachers’ productivity, there was a significant relationship between provision of adequate physical facilities and teachers’ productivity. There was a high extent of correlation between Regular Staff Development and Teachers’ Productivity and there is significant relationship between regular staff development and teachers’ productivity. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government should ensure adequate physical facilities in secondary schools as it positively determined teachers’ productivity
Legal Standards Setting in the Use of Forensics/ DNA Barcode Evidence for Wildlife Crime Detection and Prosecution in Nigeria
Nigeria’s rich biological diversity (flora and fauna) is rapidly being depleted due to unsustainable utilization, over-exploitation, poaching, and illegal trade, both nationally and internationally, leading to the endangerment of these genetic resources. Nigeria became a party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) in 1974, which was ratified and entered into force on July 1, 1975. In spite of the enforcement of national law and the CITES framework for the protection of the endangered species, illegal international trade/trafficking and poaching of CITES-listed species still abound. In the last decade, over 450 arrests were made in which 119 were compounded and 86 offenders were jailed. All the prosecutions were based on the admittance of guilt, without contention. Hitherto, there had not been any need for scientific/forensic evidence for the trial and prosecution of CITES violators in Nigeria. In criminal trials, forensic science is usually applied in contentious areas. Expert opinion is therefore needed where the expert can furnish the court with scientific or other information of a technical nature that is likely to be outside the experience and knowledge of the court. This chapter discusses the first attempt at setting legal standards by Nigeria in Partnership with the Consortium for Barcode of Life (CBOL) and the requirements for the use of DNA Barcode evidence in the conviction and prosecution of violators of the CITES convention
Impact of Nigerian Agricultural Expenditure on Agricultural Sector Output
This research examines the impact of
Nigerian agricultural expenditure on
agricultural sector output. To achieve this,
time series data obtained from the Central
Bank of Nigeria were analyzed using the
Error Correction Model (ECM). The findings
indicate that both government capital and
recurrent agricultural expenditures have
positive relationships with agricultural
sector output. However, only capital
expenditure had significant impact on
agricultural sector output in Nigeria. The
implication of this finding is that if the federal
government channels more budgetary
allocation to the agricultural sector,
agricultural sector output will increase in the
long-run. The findings also showed that there
was an inverse relationship between interest
rate and inflation rate against agricultural
sector output. This implies that the monetary
authorities should consider lowering interest
rate and combating inflation a monetary
policy priority. In conclusion, the study
recommended that agricultural budget
execution rate should be improved through
quick budget passage and timely
implementation. More importantly, such
expenditures should be closely monitored.

MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVE TECHNIQUE AS CORRELATE OF PRINCIPALS ADMINISTRATIVE EFFECTIVENESS IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIA
The study investigated management by objective technique and principals’ administrative effectiveness in South East Nigeria. Two research questions were developed and answered and two hypotheses formulated and tested for the study. The design of the study was a correlational research design. The accessible population of the study comprised 1, 430 principals in which 732 are male principals and 698 female principals. A sample size of 303 principals which made up of 156 male principal and 147 female principals were used. The instruments employed for data collection was structured questionnaires which were validated by three experts. The reliability of the instruments was established through test re-test method. The data collected through the administration of the instruments were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to answer research questions and Linear Regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings among others revealed that there was a high extent of correlation between Management by Objective (MBO) and principals administrative effectiveness and there is significant relationship between Management by Objective and principals administrative effectiveness. It was recommended that State government should appoint capable and qualified persons as principals in order to implement management by objective technique for administrative effectiveness
IMPACT OF ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURES ON PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA
This work investigated the nexus between administrative structures and performance of selected
public universities in Nigeria. The work evaluates the influence of organic and mechanistic structures
on tasks accomplishment in Nigerian public universities and as well investigates the effect of
leadership styles on staff morale in Nigeria’s public universities. The study adopted survey design
with data collection from staff of four purposively selected public universities in eastern Nigeria,
which are University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Enugu State; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka,
Anambra State; Federal University of Technology, Owerri; and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
A self-administered closed-end questionnaire was utilized to generate responses from a sample of 445
respondents who were staff of the four selected public universities. The findings show that organic
and mechanistic structures both significantly influenced tasks accomplishment in public universities.
The study also found out that leadership styles affected staff morale in the Nigerian public universities.
The study therefore concluded that the administrative structures adopted by Nigerian public
universities dictate their performance. It was recommended that the management of public universities
in Nigeria should do in-depth diagnosis of management-structure decision areas, such as institutional
planning, staff training and development, organizational design among others. This should cover
issues like the best management systems and techniques to adopt at the right time, with the right cost
and to the right staff, and also taking into consideration the environmental factors and variables that
are external to the university systems in Nigeria
Testing the Relative Comprehensiveness of Schwartz’s Ten Value Types with Help from Rokeach
The universality of Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Human Values
relies on the comprehensiveness of his value types, i.e., they are exhaustive
of all human values, no matter where they are found. Schwartz built on
Rokeach's (1973) theory of human values, however, by 1994 Schwartz had
developed a theory of values that superseded Rokeach's 36 values with ten
value types. Drawing on Rokeach, we tested the comprehensiveness of
Schwartz's theory by statistically assessing the extent to which Schwartz's
model of ten-value types and their underlying structural dimensions
incorporate all of Rokeach's 36 values. We performed factor analyses on data
collected from Austria, Nigeria, and South Africa with Rokeach's Values
Survey Instrument and Schwartz's 21-item Portrait Values Questionnaire
(PVQ-21). Our results show that while Schwartz’s theoretical model,
measured with the PVQ-21, approaches comprehensiveness, it falls short
because it does not statistically accommodate six of Rokeach’s values.
However, longer questionnaires based on the same core theory, especially
the 56-item Schwartz Value Survey (SVS), contain these six Rokeach
values. Were we to repeat our experiment using the SVS, or one of the
other longer versions of the PVQ, we would likely find that all of
Rokeach’s values are accommodated in Schwartz’s theory
RE-FOCUSING PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION FOR SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL SECURITY IN NIGERIA
Primary school level of education remains a central pillar in the foundation of other levels of education which no nation can afford to toy with. A crack in it means a major crack in the entire system, hence the introduction of this new laudable curriculum which introduces entrepreneurial skills at this formative stage. This paper examined the imperatives for its effective implementation that would inculcate enough knowledge, skills, values and positive attitude capable of ensuring sustainable national security
