Effect of University Regulations on Research Performance of Tertiary Institutions in Enugu State
The study on the effect of University Regulations on Research Performance of Tertiary Institutions in Enugu
State, explores the impact of university regulations on research outcomes in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study
highlights the importance of regulations in fostering order and quality assurance within tertiary educational
institutions. However, the actual influence of these regulations on research performance remains unclear. The
research aims to assess the relationship between regulatory frameworks and various aspects of research,
including academic staff engagement, student safety, and ethical research conduct. The study also examines
the challenges posed by restrictive regulations, bureaucratic barriers, and potential loopholes compromising
research integrity. By identifying these issues, the research seeks to propose strategies for policy reforms that
optimize regulatory structures while nurturing a conducive environment for academic research and ethical
practices. The study's significance lies in its potential to inform policymakers, university administrators, and
academic researchers in refining regulations, aligning institutional policies with research goals, and ultimately

Evaluation of Hormonal and Biochemical Risk Factors for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Possible Way for Management and Prevention of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Objective: To identify some risk factors that contributes to the development and severity of BPH among the elderly
in Enugu state, Nigeria.
Study design: One hundred men aged 53 years-85 years were used for the study; the study was divided into two
groups consisting of 50 male patients diagnosed with BPH and 50 healthy subjects.
Methods: Twenty millilitre of whole blood samples were collected from each patient and the following parameters
were investigated; oestrogen, testosterone, lipid profile, PSA, PAP, TAP, electrolyte concentration and antioxidant
biomarkers.
Results: It was found that increase in PAP, TAP, total cholesterol, TAG, LDL, oestrogen, potassium and sodium and
decrease in levels of catalase, GPx
, selenium, HDL and testosterone are risk factors for the development and severity
of BPH.
Conclusions: In view of this, modifiable lifestyles can be adopted for the prevention, management and treatment of
BPH
Life Satisfaction and Social Maladjustment as Predictors of Suicidal Ideation among Undergraduate Students
Abstract: Suicide is a sombre public health predicament amongst youths globally which often results from
psychological, social, emotional and economic factors. This study investigated life satisfaction and social
maladjustment as predictors of suicidal ideation among undergraduate students, with one hundred (100)
undergraduate students with the age range of 17-45 years, mean of 22.02, a standard deviation of 3.38 selected as
participants’ from four faculties of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) which include;
twenty-eight (28) from Applied Nature Sciences, twelve (12) from Law, thirty-two (32) from Management Sciences
and twenty-eight (28) from Social Sciences and Humanities, using multiple-stage sampling techniques. Neugarten,
Havinghurst and Tobin (1961), Life Satisfaction Index Wiggins (1966), social maladjustment scale Beck, Steer and
Ranieri (1988), Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation were used for data collection; this is cross sectional research design
and multiple hierarchy regression was adopted for data analysis. Findings of this study revealed that social
maladjustment did not predict suicidal ideation among undergraduate; sig. = .145, at p<.05 life satisfaction also
did not predict suicidal ideation among undergraduate; sig. = .527, at p<.05, social maladjustment and life
satisfaction did not jointly predict suicidal ideation among undergraduate; sig. f-change =.284 at p<.05. The result
was in congruity with cognitive behavioural theory which postulated that the way people acquire and interpret
information impact on their choices and behaviours matters. Therefore, students are encouraged to remain always
positive in their thinking to avert suicidal ideation irrespective of the circumstances around them
“Who Is Our Man?”: Corpus-Assisted Understanding of Naming Strategies in Support-Motivated Conflicts Among BBNaija Housemates’ Virtual Fans
Naming in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is an important discur
sive strategy for investigating the representation of social actors in
discourse. This is different from its focus in other disciplinary back
grounds where the concept is also studied, such as Anthropology (which focuses on the socio-cultural significance of names), Onomastics (classifi
cation of complex taxonomies), or Pragmatics and Semantics (referential
and semantic properties of names). In his socio-semantic inventory of
how social actors can be represented in discourse, Van Leeuwen (2008)
illustrates that text producers can endow social actors with different
representational choices which identify them either as individuals or as
groups (nomination and categorisation), doers of something or bearers
of some qualities (functionalisation and identification), or as humans or
objects (personalisation and impersonalisation) and so on. These repre
sentational choices are naming strategies realised in the form of proper
names, personal or possessive pronouns, or even abstract nouns and adjec
tives functioning as noun phrases in text constructions. Jeffries (2007,
2010) also identifies naming and describing as parts of the tools of Critical
Stylistics, a systemic framework for the ideological study of textual meta
functions. According to Ononye and Osunbade (2015, p. 5), naming and
describing tasks require the analyst’s knowledge of the noun phrase (NP),
because the NP in English textual structure typically ‘names’ an entity.
Citing Fowler (1991), they argue that naming could be ideologically
laden since the NP in a sentence is not prone to dispute or questioning
(unlike the predicate, which contains an argument), and its relationship of
meaning could be taken for granted by the readers. Hence, naming strate
gies are important to critical discourse analysis as they could ideologically
function to attribute some features to, include or exclude, associate or
dissociate social actors in relation to given social actions
Isolation and Characterization of Bacteria Contaminants of Commercial Suya Meat along Sakponba Road, Benin City
Background: Suya meat is a traditionally prepared spicy beef product which is commonly made by the
Northerners of Nigeria known as the Hausas, it is a perishable food due to its chemical composition and
characteristics, giving it a perfect setting for the growth of various dangerous bacteria that can cause
human infection, as well as meat deterioration and economic loss. Methods: Forty (40) samples of suya
meat were collected from vendors around Sakpoba Road in Benin City, which were Igun, Ogbelaka, Erie,
First, Second, Third, Saint Saviour, Ewaka, Nomayo, and Erediawa respectively and was immediately
taken to the laboratory for analysis. Bacterial were isolated using standard microbiological, biochemical
and molecular techniques. Further identification of the isolates was carried out using 16S ribosomal
ribonucleic acid (16S rRNA) gene primer. Results: The most prevalent Characterization of the bacterial
isolates using the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis shows the isolates to include the following;
Enterobacter cloacae strain D4, Escherichia coli strain SMM1138, Escherichia coli strain ATDS48,
Escherichia coli strain Huaian, Klebsiella pneumoniae strain KP5296, Myroides odoratimimus strain
7BD125, Proteus mirabilis strain LCX7, Providencia rettgeri strain Jilu0102. Most of this
microorganisms isolated are pathogenic and are toxic when ingested in contaminated suya meat. The
Prevalence of occurrence of the bacteria isolates was highest for Escherichia coli with 25% and
Staphylococcus aureus with 25% respectively, Bacillus cereus with 15%, Klebsiella pneumoniae with
12.5%, Pseudomonas spp with 10%, Citrobacter spp with 5%, and Salmonella spp with 7.5%. The mean

aerobic plate count were in order of 10 (cfu/g) with the highest value for 20.8%. Conclusion: Occurrence
of such organisms in ready-to-eat suya meat constitutes a food safety issue which calls for urgent response
in the education of suya meat producers on the hazards, Critical Control Points and the importance of
personal hygiene and clean environment should be handled adequately
An integrated geochemical and spatiotemporal assessment of groundwater resources within an industrial suburb, Southeastern Nigeria
The indiscriminate discharge of industrial efuents from beverage industries into nearby streams and lands within the Udi
area of Enugu State has resulted in a decline in the drinking water quality. In this study, geochemical, indexical, statistical
and spatiotemporal models were generated to assess the drinking water quality of the area. Seventeen borehole samples
were randomly collected across the area and examined for 18 chemical parameters using standard methods. Results revealed
that the groundwater is slightly acidic. Hydrochemical modeling identifed Ca2+–Mg2+–Cl−–SO4
2− as the major hydrogeochemical facies and Ca2+–Mg2+ and Cl−–SO4
2− as the dominant water type, implying that the water is permanently hard
and unft for laundry. The hydrochemical model, PHREEQC, was used in trace element species assessment. Results from
the model revealed that trace elements were immobile under the prevailing pH conditions owing to the presence of limiting
mineral phases (e.g. sulphates and carbonates). The pollution index of groundwater revealed that 29.5% of the water samples
recorded high pollution, hence are unsuitable for drinking, while 17% recorded insignifcant pollution and were adjudged
ft for drinking. Similarly, water quality index and GIS-based spatiotemporal analysis revealed that 64.7% of boreholes
around the northeastern, west-central and southern parts of the area are unsuitable for drinking, however, boreholes within
the central parts are drinkable. The groundwater fow map showed that groundwater fow in the area is predominantly from
the northeastern to the southwestern direction. Hence, untreated wastewater and industrial efuents disposal sites should be
restricted to the southern parts of the study area

Implications of Insecurity on Nigeria’s Development, 1999 to 2022
Development in Nigeria has been hindered by the disruptive influences of insecurity. This paper attempts to examines
the effects of insecurity on Nigeria’s development from 1999 to 2022 and to set the conditions necessary for change.
The paper contends that there exists a strong tie between security and development because development cannot be
attained in an atmosphere of insecurity. Hence the paper conceptualizes development and security as two distinct but
interrelated ideas that influence one another. The study adopted qualitative and quantitative research design using
historical method of analysis, and largely, secondary sources of data were employed. Therefore, the paper
recommends that, if development is to be achieved in Nigeria, constitutional as well as policy measures should be
adopted. Besides, a collective measure that comprises all stakeholders such as the local, state and federal government
as well as the international agencies are required to tackle this issue of insecurity which is wreaking havoc on the
nation
