Application Of Microorganisms As Biofactories To Produce Biogenic Nanoparticles For Environmental Cleanup: Currents Advances And Challenges
Recently, there has been a significant increase in the rate and amount of pollutant discharge into the
environment. This is extremely worrisome to the human population, especially as it is envisaged to
reach 10 billion in the next 40 years. The traditional methods applied for pollutant abatement and
recycling exhibit inefficiency and environmental unfriendliness because they cannot effectively
transform these pollutants into non-noxious states. Recently, microorganisms and nano-based
materials are emerging as highly efficient and eco-friendly alternatives for managing, reducing, and
decontaminating pollutant wastes or effluents in the environment. The biosynthesis of these
materials has motivated research into developing cheaper, green, and more sustainable yeast, algae,
fungi, and bacteria-biogenic nanoparticles, which could be used to clean up heavily contaminated
environments. This review evaluates the application of microorganisms (yeast, algae, fungi, and
bacteria) with nanomaterials as biogenic nanoparticles to clean up environmental pollutants. The
environmental and health hazards associated with the fate of the biogenic nanoparticles, and some
legal regulations, are also highlighted. The commercialization of nanomaterials and their possible
global application are also documented. Future recommendations were proffere
What Is Poetry?
When words freeze into snowballs of profound meanings, it's poetry.
When words twist their waists like beaded dancers, it's poetry.
When words drum like frenzied drummers in village squares, it's poetry.
When words sing in surreal or rattling voices, it's poetry.
When words echo the war tunes of ecstatic flutists, it's poetry.
When words spread their petals to shelter and beautify humans, it's poetry.
When words whisper and reveal primordial human wisdom, it's poetry.
When words replace banal leaves with budding fresh leaves of mythic language, it's poetry.
When words whistle like pines along the River Danube, it's poetry.
When words shuffle their feet like untutored village boys and girls, it's still poetry.
When words mew, coo, sizzle, hiss, quack, cackle, rattle, croak, squeak, it's poetry.
When words intoxicate, arouse, bite, shock, sadden, provoke or infuriate, it's poetry.
When words show the natural world in pictures made with mere words, it's poetry.
When words imprison thoughts to give wings to ideas, it's poetry.
When words get bonded in lines and stanzas by their natural beauty and meaning, it's poetry.
When words turn honey into Swedish-bitter and make the two one and the same, it's poetry.
When words wrap their bitter, naked bodies with leaves of honeyed expressions, it's poetry
When words become sweet songs, it's poetry.
And when words become so delicious that you want to gobble them, it's poetry
SELECTION AND PREPARATION OF SUITABLE TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES DURING TEACHING PRACTICE: ISSUE IN CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION
The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges student teachers are faced with in the
selection and preparation of teaching and learning resources during their teaching practice in Nairobi, Kenya.
Two research objectives guided the study; to identify the criteria student teachers used in the selection and
preparation of teaching and learning resources, and to examine the challenges student teachers are faced with in
the selection and preparation of teaching and learning resources. The study employed the cross-sectional survey
design. The study targeted student teachers on teaching practice. Simple random sampling was used to select 50
student teachers. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Proportions and percentages were
used to answer the research questions. The findings of the study showed that student teachers considered factors
such as: relevance of the resources, appropriateness to learner and the objectives, availability of the resources,
and quality of the resources, in the selection and preparation of teaching and learning resources. The findings also
revealed that most student teachers are faced with the challenges of unavailability of teaching and learning
resources within the immediate environment, and lack of creative skills to improvise teaching and learning
resources. The study concluded that teaching and learning resources are imperative in teaching and learning in
this 21st century knowledge society. It therefore recommended that student teachers should be innovative and
creative in the selection and preparation of teaching and learning resources
Teaching the “Would be Teachers” with Innovative Pedagogy: A Panacea for Promoting Quality Teacher Education in the Post Covid-19 Pandemic, in Enugu State, Nigeria
COVID-19 pandemic created a gap in teaching and learning. The problem of the study is that the art of teaching the would-be-teachers with traditional methods are being employed by some teachers without a reasonable change to innovative methods of teaching. The would-be-teachers should be exposed to effective learning processes to enable them acquire knowledge for a quality teacher education in the teaching profession. The teaching methodologies could include the use of zoom, WhatsApp, Google classroom, virtual learning, power point and telegram to facilitate their learning abilities in this post COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this paper is to encourage the use of innovative methods as fastest ways to facilitate teaching the would-be-teachers to enable them get more exposed to the challenges of the changing society which will help them improve in their teaching profession in this post COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered mainly from textbooks, journals, internet and other secondary materials. This paper recommends that teachers should adopt and adjust to innovative pedagogy for effective output in teaching the would-be-teachers, especially in this post COVID-19 pandemic
GEOPHYSICAL STUDY OF ROAD FAILURES USING VERTICAL ELECTRICAL SOUNDING OF SOME ROADS IN ENUGU, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
Road failures in Nigeria have been attributed to so many factors such as lack of proper geophysical investigation prior to road construction and a proper understanding of the weathered layer characteristics. The thickness of the road layer was determined using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) or Vertical Electrical Drilling (VED) data collected from ten (10) VES stations along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Thinker's Corner Enugu, and Port Harcourt Enugu expressways. The survey was conducted with the ABEM SAS 1000 Terrameter with half current electrode spacing of 50m, and the data was processed with computer software to obtain modeled curves and the thickness of the layers. The study's findings revealed that the first layer's thickness ranged between 0.6 m and 2.3 m with an average thickness of 1.6m along the ten VES locations, and the apparent resistivity of the first layer ranged between 46.2 Ωm and 1265.7 Ωm with an average resistivity value of 302 Ωm along the ten VES locations. These showed low resistivity of the first layer, indicating clay/shale and low bearing capacity. It is therefore recommended that if soil and clay are the main top materials that usually contain water, they must be removed and replaced with more competent materials
Bowel preparation in children and adolescents undergoing ileo-colonoscopy: what is new?
Ileo-colonoscopy is a vital diagnostic and therapeutic tool undertaken for evaluating and treating gastrointestinal tract pathologies in children and adolescents as well as adults. Proper visualization of the lower intestinal mucosa, completion of the procedure including terminal ileum/cecal intubation, detection of pathological lesions and therapeutic maneuvers are hinged on how adequate the bowel preparation is. About 25% percent of pediatric patients have inadequate bowel preparations, which can lead to prolonged colonoscopy procedure time, missed pathology, difficult ileal intubation/incomplete examination, and requiring cancellation or repeat procedure with attendant anesthetic risks. An ideal bowel preparation regimen should clear the colon of fecal material with no alteration of the colonic mucosa that could affect the histological findings. There is no acceptable universal regimen for bowel preparation in children; however wide variability of practices exists globally. Hence, the current review is aimed at analyzing recent published literature and personal practical experiences as well as developing a standard bowel preparation guideline that will improve outcome of the ileo- colonoscopy procedure in children particularly in resource limited settings
Election and security challenges: critical issues in nigeria’s 2023 general election
It has since been proven that the health of democracies, of whatever type and range, depends on
the electoral procedure. This implies, that the spirit of democracy rests on election where leaders
emerge through the sovereign power of the people. Since the end of the cold war, democracy has
assumed the status of a universal norm as a result of which various governments lay claims to
some form of democratic credentials. In spite of its global or universal acceptance, electoral
process in the developing world has been marred by myriad security challenges. This has been
particularly pronounced in Nigeria. Such challenges range from thuggery and arson, kidnapping
and maiming to killing of political opponents. Against the backdrop of the current spiral of
insecurity in Nigeria, this paper explores the implication of such security challenges for the
conduct of the upcoming 2023 general election in Nigeria. The paper adopted the theory of the
post-colonial state as its framework of analysis. Data were generated using documentary method
while qualitative-descriptive method was engaged in analyzing the data. In the light of the above,
the study found that the deliberate failure of the previous and incumbent administrations to
address the recurring internal security challenges in Nigeria poses a real threat to the smooth and
orderly conduct of the 2023 general election. The paper, therefore, identified the urgent need for
the government to prioritize the tackling of the multifaceted security challenges in Nigeria as part
of the preparations for the conduct of the 2023 general election. It argues that without deliberate
effort to tackle these security challenges, the 2023 general elections, and by extension Nigeria’s
tottering democracy is greatly imperiled
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ASSERTIVENESS AS FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AMONG NIGERIAN POLICE
The study examines emotional intelligence and
assertiveness as factors that influence prosocial
behavior among Nigerian Police. One hundred
and twenty-two (122) police officers
comprising of 78 males and 44 females (mean
age = 36.8, SD = 9.68) selected from police
stations in Enugu metropolis participated in the
study.
A questionnaire
comprising
demographic information and three scales:
Prosociality Scale; emotional Intelligence
Scale and Assertiveness Schedule was used for
data
collection.
Hierarchical
multiple
regression was used for analysis of data.
Results reveal emotional intelligence (β = .327,
t = 3.65, p<.05) and assertiveness (β= .273, t=
2.85, p<.05) as factors that significantly
influence prosocial behavior among the
Nigerian Police. Useful implications and
conclusion were made. the Nigerian Police is evidenced in the 2020
demand for an end to a unit of Nigerian Police
force known as Special Anti-Robbery Squad
(SARS). The “EndSARS” protest seems to be
an indicator of low prosocial behavior among
the Nigerian Police. Prosocial behavior has
been variously conceptualized. Afolabi (2013)
views prosocial behaviors as voluntary actions
that are put in place to help another individual
or set of people. It is voluntary behaviour that
is
intended to benefit another without
expectation of external reward, (Eisenberg et
al., 2010). It plays positive role in promoting
mental health of those who engage in it and
receive it, as well as in the development of
human society (Kou et al., 2007; Yang et al.,
2016; Anowor and Ogbe, 2019; El-Khodary &
Samara, 2019). Hence, prosocial behavior
among Nigerian Police will obviously promote
their psychosocial wellbeing. However, people
seem to live in a selfish environment in which
they seek personal accomplishments and ignore
others (Finkelstein, 2010; ). Low prosocial
behavior could have negative effects on
personal and social lives of individuals (Carlo
et al., 2014). It could also lead to an imbalance
in social relations, (McDonald, et al., 2011;
Onodugo et al, 2014), increases in level of
violence and aggression (McMahon et al, 2013)
as well as crimes (Hamalainen & Pulkkinen,
1995). Hence, the need for improvement of
prosocial behavior among Nigerian police.
Studies have examined the two main factors
(external social factors and internal individual
factors) affecting Prosocial behavior, (Xiao et
al., 2014; Wentzel et al., 2007; Yuan et al.,
2019)/ However, there is paucity of studies on
influence of internal individual factors
particularly

Digital Dependency: How Parenting and Social Intelligence Shape Internet Addiction
Te global pandemic forced young adults and their parents to be together. Tis situation has equally exposed the weaknesses in the
child-parent relationship. Tis study aimed to investigate the role of social intelligence in the relationship between parenting style and
Internet addiction during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Seven hundred and seventy-four were sampled from a public university in
southeast Nigeria. Tey comprised 373 females and 401 males aged 17–28 years, with a mean age of 21.61. Te students responded to
validated measures of parenting style inventory-II, the Tromsø social intelligence scale, and Young’s Internet addiction test. Te
moderated multiple regression analysis results indicated that permissive parenting and social intelligence signifcantly predicted
Internet addiction. Social intelligence moderated the relationship between authoritarian parenting style and Internet addiction. Te
moderation was that Internet addiction is signifcantly higher for individuals with low social intelligence and authoritarian parenting
style than individuals with low social intelligence and higher authoritarian parenting style. Some implications of the fndings include
engaging parenting styles to encourage more physical interactions and enabling an environment for growth. Also, adopting techniques
to increase social intelligence will help students adjust to any parenting style that may infuence their psychological well-bein
