Antibacterial Activity of Phytochemicals in Ficus thonningii Leaves Extracts Against Some Selected Pathogenic Bacterial Prevalent in Sickle Cell Anemia
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is caused by point mutation involving substitution of valine by glutamic acid, clinical
cause of this is that SCA patients are immunocompromised hence, prone to bacterial infections. Escherichia coli,
Klebsiella. pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus are some of the
bacterial associated with SCA. Here we investigated the antibacterial activity of extracts of Ficus thonningii leaves used by ethnomedicinal practitioners in the management of infections in SCA patients. The antimicrobial activity was determined based on average diameter of zone of inhibition (AVDZI), minimum inhibitory concentration
(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) while, structure of compounds FTH1 (Bergapten), FTH2
(Protocatechuic acid) and FTH3 (Methyl ferulate) were identified based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
analysis. The results indicated that the crude extracts of methanol (MCE), hexane (HCE), chloroform (CCE) and
methanol-water (MWCE) had AVDZI of ≥ 12.1 ± 0.12 mm, ≥ 11.0 ± 0.00 mm, ≥ 10.2 ± 0.25 mm and ≥ 12.1 ±
0.21 mm respectively while the isolated compounds FTH1, FTH2 and FTH3 had AVDZI of ≥ 10.1 ± 0.10 mm, ≥ 9.1 ± 0.12 mm, ≥ 7.1 ± 0.24 mm respectively. The AVDZI results was tested for statistical significance using one way ANOVA and Tukey Posthoc test, and was considered significant at p < 0.05. Our findings suggested that F. thonningii leaves extracts including compounds isolated from them are potential antibacterial agent and justify their use as antibacterial prophylactics in the management of infections in SCA patients by ethnic people in Nigeria
Entrepreneurship and Practical Demonstration Skills in Business Education - Accounting Option in Post Covid-19 Pandemic Nigeria
The study investigated entrepreneurship and practical demonstration skills. It focused on lecturers
of Business Education-Accounting option in public universities in Enugu State, Nigeria. The
research method used was descriptive survey research. Two hypotheses guided the study. The
study's population was made up of fifty (50) lecturers from two public universities. The whole
population was studied. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The null hypotheses were
tested by means of an analysis of variance (ANOVA). According to the study's findings, Business
Education-Accounting lecturers were equipped with entrepreneurial skills and practical
demonstration abilities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other things, the study
recommends that, Business Education – Accounting lecturers should embark on personal short and
long time’s entrepreneurial courses to acquire more practical demonstration skills required in
teaching; linking all their courses to entrepreneurship
Appraising Landscaping in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli Campus, Anambra State, Nigeria
Amid the growing benefits for proper landscaping design and planning, there is the need
for man to be in a decent, well-organised and aesthetically pleasing environment. This
could add value to concentration of staff and students in the campus as well as provide
relaxation points within the campus. The landscaping quality of Uli campus of
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University deserves attention in view of its state.
The objectives of this paper are to appraise the quality of the present status of
landscaping in the campus and assess the perception of people on the quality of present
landscape in the campus environment. This is with a view to providing a feedback for
improved landscape management of the University campus environment. The
methodology adopted for this research was survey design. The focus was on academic
staff of the Faculty of Environmental Science of the university randomly selected from
the research population. This selection was premised on their assumed knowledge of the
subject matter. Data was collected from primary sources using questionnaires and
observation schedules. Data analysis was done at the univariate level using Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The outcomes show that the landscape
environment within the campus is not in a good state. Some contributing factors to this
were attributed to inadequate maintenance operations, inadequate provision of funds
and inadequate equipment for maintenance operations, among others. The study
recommends involving professionals in the built environment in the physical planning
unit and works department of the institution to handle landscaping concerns within the
campus, provision of enough funds for landscape improvement and maintenance
operations, incorporating man-made features such as trash cans, street lights, sculpture,
defined pedestrian walkways, paving and other road furnishings incorporated into the
landscape. The university management may revive an existing landscape committee that
would liaise with the horticulture unit of the faculty of Agriculture and have adequate as
well as regular supply of new plants for possible replacement of dead plants and/or
planting of new ones where they are desired. A redesign of the general landscape of the
campus is desirable
UTILIZATION OF INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE BY MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE LECTURERS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ENUGU STATE
The main purpose of the study was to ascertain the extent of utilization of innovative educational software by
mathematics and computer science lecturers of tertiary institutions in Enugu state. Two research Questions were
formulated to guide the study, while two null hypotheses were tested at p < 0.05. Descriptive survey research
design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised 73 lecturers in ICT- related
Departments in Enugu State public tertiary institutions. A researcher’s made structured questionnaire titled extent
of utilization of Educational software Questionnaire (AUESQ) was used as the instrument for data collection. The
instrument was face validated by three experts from the Department of Science and Computer Education; one
expert in measurement and evaluation and the other two in computer Education all in Faculty of Education,
Godfrey Okoye University. Reliability coefficient of 0.76 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha. The research
questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested with t-test and analysis
at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the extent of utilization of Innovative educational software
by mathematics and computer science lecturers in tertiary institutions in Enugu state was low. It was
recommended among others that the management of tertiary institutions should organize regular workshop and
conferences to equip mathematics and computer science lecturers with the relevant of ICT skills needed to
compete with their contemporaries in developed countries of the world
EFFECTS OF HUMAN FACTORS ON SKILLED LABOUR MOBILITY IN THE NIGERIAN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
The aim of this study was to appraise the effects of human factors on the mobility of
skilled construction workers in Nigeria. The study employed descriptive survey technique to
elicit data. From the results of this study, goal setting, work conditions, nature of construction
work tasks, workers’ attitude towards improving their skills, role of construction organizations
towards improving workers’ skills and workers’ educational background are all very significant
factors responsible for the mobility of skilled construction workers in Nigeria. Following the
findings of this study, it is recommended that: Effective and easily achievable goals should be set
for skilled construction workers; Work conditions should be designed to be worker-friendly;
Skilled construction workers should be given tasks commensurate with their capabilities and
specialization; Workshops and seminars should be made compulsory to enlighten construction
workers on the need for self-improvement; Construction organizations should endeavour to
inculcate training programs as part of further skills development for their workers; and workers
should endeavour to attain basic educational qualifications commensurate with their chosen
trades before applying for positions
Family institution as a factor in poverty alleviation for sustainable development in Nigeria
The family is the very institution to which we owe our humanity. Human beings are brought up
in the family. Families exist everywhere on the planet and in different forms. Family experience
is necessary to turn a new born into full human being with values and standards and the ability
to live harmoniously with other people and contribute to poverty alleviation for sustainable
development. Family is a social unit characterized by common residence, economic
cooperation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain
socially approved sexual relationship and one or more children born or adopted. Family is in
fact a universal institution. Familys performs and carry out fundamental societal functions and
activities necessary for poverty alleviation and thus contribute to sustainable development.
Family is regarded as the microcosm of the society, the extent to which the family succeeds in
controlling the behavoiurs of its members and carry out its functions depict the level of
orderliness and contribution to poverty alleviation and thus sustainable development in a given
society
Challenges and Prospects of Migrating to e-Learning in Nigeria Higher Education Sector: SDG4 in Focus
This study examined the challenges and prospects of migrating to e-learning in Nigeria higher education sector: SDG4.0 in
focus. The objectives of the study centered on finding out effect of online learning in the implementation of higher education
curriculum in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria. The methodology adopted by the study comprised the quantitative method
and sample survey design. In the sample survey, a well validated and pre-tested questionnaire was used in collecting data.
A sample of 336 used for the study was drawn from the population of students and lecturers of five higher institutions of
learning in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria. This study was anchored on two theories: the Diffusion of Information Theory.
Multiple Regression Analysis model was used for analysis of data. Results of the study showed that the online learning
platforms did not enhance the performance of lecturers in the delivery of the curriculum of courses; that the e-learning
platform had no significant effect on the performance of students in the learning of courses.. Finally, the study
recommended increase in the funding of higher education institutions, reduction in the cost of ICTs through tax incentives to
importers of ICTs accessories and establishment of local ICTs industries, training and capacity building of staff of HEIs in
Nigeria among other
Evaluation of Mathematics Teachers’ Factors on the Implementation of Mathematics Curriculum in Senior Secondary Schools: Implications to Life Sciences Curriculum
This study evaluated Mathematics teachers’ factors on the implementation of Mathematics
curriculum in senior secondary school in Obollo Education Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria. The
study has great implications to life sciences curriculum.Three research questions were posed and
three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the conduct of the study. The study employed
descriptive research design. The population of this study consists of 124 mathematics teachers
drawn from 54 state owned Senior Secondary Schools in Obollo Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.
The sample for the study consisted of 64 mathematics teachers constituting 50% of the total
population size. The sample was selected from 19 secondary schools in the three local
government area of Obollo Education Zone of Enugu State through the process of simple random
sampling technique. An inventory schedule was the instrument used for data collection. 64
questionnaires were administered and returned. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested
using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient. The estimates were found to be reliable based on the result
of pilot study conducted by the researchers, which shows a reliability figure of 0.978, 0.971 and
0.986 for clusters 1-3 respectively. The data collected from the study were analyzed using means
and standard deviations to answer the research questions and Chi-square was used to test the
hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that mathematics teachers’
education qualifications, teaching experiences and teaching methods significantly influenced the
implementation of mathematics curriculum in senior secondary school. It was recommended
among others that to foster improved academic performance of secondary school students,
government should employ professional, qualified and experienced teachers
Nanochitosan derived from marine annelids
The phylum Annelida consists of segmented worms which are identified with the pres
ence of coelom which is a body cavity (or coelom), bristles that are moveable (or Setae/
Chaetae), and a segmented body through annulations that goes transversely. They are
made up of a complex group containing up to 22,000 well-known species (Aguado et al.,
2014). Annelids are coelomated organisms which are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical
and coelomate organisms, usually have a circulatory system that is closed and a nephridia
which plays a vital role in osmoregulation. Their sizes vary from millimeters to meters
long and also possess feeding structures of varying complexities, different morphology of
chaetal and sensory organs. They ubiquitous and distributed all over the world right from
the deepest sediments of marine habitants to moderate altitudes of fresh water habitants as
well as from the temperate to the tropic region (Donald and Bruno, 2009).
This phylum of invertebrate animals is divided into three groups: hirudinea, poly
chaeta, and oligochaeta. The marine annelids which are members of the class polychaeta
have been found to display the more primitive features of the phylum (Susan et al.,
2015). There are 6000 known species of the polychaetes and most of them are found
floating ocean, wandering at the bottom or found living in the tube built by them.
They have varying color ranging from dull to brilliant while of the species are known
to be bioluminescent, such as Chaetopterus, Terebella, and Cirratulus (Hastings, 2011). The
earthworms belong to the class Oligochaetae, which are known to live primarily in
damp soils; few members live in fresh water and estuarine habitat. The leeches are the
major member of the class Hirudinea (Bleidorn, 2009)
