Eisenmenger Syndrome: A Revisit of a Hidden but Catastrophic Disease

    Get PDF
Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a rare condition seen in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). It is characterized by raised pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) arising from a shunt reversal with the presence of desaturated blood in the systemic circulation. Proper timing and early intervention in children with congenital heart disease have made the syndrome a rare occurrence. However, this cannot be said in developing countries where facilities for the diagnosis and management of children with congenital heart disease are not optimal. The aim of this narrative review is to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and to review the new techniques in the evaluation of children with ES. It also highlights in a snapshot the state of management of ES in a developing country, A search for published data on ES was done through several search engines such as Pubmed, google scholar citation, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis. This involves research done over the past 30 years. Keywords such as Eisenmenger’ syndrome, ‘congenital heart defect’, ‘Pulmonary hypertension’,‘catherterization’, ‘echocardiography’, and ‘children’ were used

The existing literature portrays the declaration of the independence of Biafra as a unanimous decision of the people of Biafra. While many leaders and personalities in Biafra supported the secession and some other decisions taken by the Biafran High Command, some others had reservations on that. Unfortunately, the existing literature in the Nigerian-Biafra war has not captured these silent voices. This paper intends therefore to capture these voices that have been neglected in the historiography of the war and situate them in proper historical perspective. The paper relies more on oral history of the war granted by some Biafran leaders who were actively involved in the war; it was complimented with books, monographs and other materials on the Nigerian-Biafran war. Available facts will be analysed using qualitative research methodology

Oedipus/Electra complex has proven to be a cardinal source of tension in marriage relationship, hence creating hindrance to cordiality between siblings, parents and in-laws.This hindrance is premised on the fact that Oedipus/Electra complex implies some form of extremism that breeds contempt in families. While Oedipus complex implies a form of intimacy between mother and favorite son, Electra complex implies intimacy between the father and favorite daughter. As growing children, Oedipus/Electra complex causes jealousy among siblings, denies moral courage to correct children for proper training, excuses the fault of the favorite child, miscarriage of justice/partiality, affects the bond/intimacy between favored child's husband/wife. This paper aims at understanding, exposing, analyzing and providing the necessary prospects to family, marriage, or relationship challenges which extremism of Oedipus/Electra complex imposes. Similarly, this paper offers a thorough research on the implications of Oedipus/Electra complex in marriage especially from a Nigerian experience. Expository and analytic methods are adopted for this study. Thus, the method of exposition is to uncover the concepts of Oedipus/Electra complex and marriage situations in Nigeria while analytic method serves to offer philosophical analysis of Oedipus/Electra complex as well as drawing its implications in marriage experiences. The implication of this study shows that adequate understanding of the effects of Oedipus/Electra complex in marriage/family experience would offer prospects towards caution and mitigation of the extremism of Oedipus/Electra comple
