Assessing the Validity of Christian Religious Studies Multiple-Choice Items of Enugu State Basic Education Certificate Examination
This study is to determine the validity of using multiple choice questions
for the Basic Christian Religious Certificate Examination in Enugu State.
One research question and one hypothesis were formulated for the study.
Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The
population for the study consisted of Upper Basic 9 CRS students in all
291 secondary schools in Enugu State, who registered for BECE in 2015
and 2018. Three secondary schools were sampled from the three Local
Government Areas that made up Enugu Education Zone. BECE question
papers were administered to 300 students from the three schools drawn
from the Enugu Education Zone. BECE question paper was the
instrument used for data collection. The instrument was not face
validated because it was a standardized test. Content validation was done
using the Chi-square test of the Goodness-of-fit at an alpha level of 0.05.
The major findings of the study showed that the BECE CRS multiple-choice questions of Enugu State Ministry of Education had low content
validity. It was recommended that Enugu State Ministry of Education
through the Examination Development Centre (EDC) should generate
items in accordance with the specifications of the test blueprint
Social Studies Education and Good Governance in Nigeria: Instructional Roles, Challenges and Prospects
The current pervasive social crises in Nigeria have made the promotion of good governance through social studies at all levels of the education system imperative. This paper argues that the instructional roles of social studies in promoting good governance education can be achieved through effective teaching of related contents, use of innovative instructional methods, qualitative development of social studies professionals, the use of information Communication Technologies, use of resource persons, organization of conferences, workshops, and seminars, and deepening of political literacy education among others. The challenges identified by the paper include: inadequate funding of research and teaching, limited utilization of innovative instructional methods, irregular renewal of curricular, inadequate professional training of teachers and pervasive insecurity. The prospects of good governance through social studies depend on the promotion of functional contemporary education, effective roles of Social Studies Association, improvement in organization of conferences, seminars and workshops, effective teacher preparation programmes in tertiary institutions as well as the use of ICT in teaching social studies, among others. Based on the foregoing, it was recommended that adequate funding of social studies education programmes, effective training of social studies teachers, teachers' utilization of innovative Communication Technologies, among others should be vigorously pursued by Government and other relevant stakeholders as viable way of promoting good governance education

This study investigated secondary school teachers’ and students’ attitude towards teaching and learning of sex education in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. It adopted a descriptive survey design. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire which was developed by the researchers and validated by experts in the field of measurement and evaluation. The data collected were trial tested and analysed using the Cronbach Alpha. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.89 which indicated that the instrument was reliable for the study. A sample size of 120 (48males and 72 females) SSS students was randomly sampled from four schools out of ten schools that was used for the study. The research questions were answered using mean score and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested with t-test statistic at P-value of 0.05% level of significance. The findings among others revealed that there is significant difference in the attitude of male and female teachers towards the teaching of sex education. The findings equally revealed that there is significant difference between male and female students’ attitude towards learning of sex education. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that a curriculum of sex education should be developed for all secondary schools in Nigeria and the subject family life replaced with sex education
The organic extracts from the leaves of Ficus thonningii Blume, Jatropha tanjorensis J.L Ellis and Saroja and Justicia carnea Lindley as potential nutraceutical antioxidants and functional foods
The search for naturally occurring plant-based nutraceutical antioxidants is imperative in the
management of arrays of diseases. Herein, the methods involved profiling antioxidant activities
and nutritional composition of the methanolic extracts from the leaves of Ficus thonningii
Blume (FTH), Jatropha tanjorensis J.L Ellis and Saroja (JTR) and Justicia carnea Lindley (JCN)
using spectrophotometric techniques. In this sense, J. tanjorensis J.L Ellis and Saroja extract
showed the highest total antioxidant capacity and strong DPPH radical scavenging activity
with an IC50 of 10.490 ± 0.0320 μg.mL-1 when compared to ascorbic acid (IC50 of 114.140 ±
5.135 μg.mL-1), while for the hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, F. thonningii Blume and J.
carnea Lindl. extracts resembled IC50 values of 523.095 ± 13.629 and 503.733 ± 7.562 μg.mL-1,
respectively. A positive correlation was observed between the extracts and ascorbic acid (p
< 0.001), as well. In addition, nutrients and minerals were present in appreciable quantities.
The obtained results validate the assayed plants extracts as potential radical scavengers and
promising nutraceutical antioxidants in ethnomedicine
UTILIZATION OF CREATIVE THINKING METHOD IN IMPLEMENTING ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION CURRICULUM IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ENUGU EDUCATION ZONE, NIGERIA
Entrepreneurship education is globally seen as the answer to the growing socio-economic problem of
unemployment and also a crucial element of growth and stability in any economy. Indeed, the prosperity of every
country to a large extent is dependent on entrepreneurship. This study examined the extent to which creative
thinking method has been utilized in implementing entrepreneurship education curriculum in tertiary institutions
in Enugu State, Nigeria. The population for this study included all entrepreneurship students at Enugu State's four
private universities. The total population of the study was made up of nine hundred and sixty-seven (967)
respondents. The study's sample size was 322 respondents. This sample was determined using the formula
recommended by Yamane (1973). Data for the study were collected through a structured questionnaire. The data
collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The independent
sample T-test was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that the utilization of creative thinking method
in entrepreneurial skills is low. It is therefore the recommendation of this study that teachers should use an
appropriate creative thinking method in teaching in schools and conduct more studies discussing this strategy and
its relation to other variables such as critical thinking and teachers should use visual representations while teaching
entrepreneurship lessons
PRESERVING INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE: A CASE STUDY OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE CUSTOMS IN OTUKPO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BENUE STATE
Given the rate at which Westernization is eroding this vital aspect of our lives, there is an urgent need to protect and preserve our intangible cultural heritage. Just as it applies to culture, intangible heritage is constantly changing. Although, these changes could be detrimental or advantageous as the case may be. Intangible cultural heritage can therefore be regarded as being under threat if not safeguarded and kept alive. To achieve this, the tradition must be practised regularly and then passed from generation to generation. However, using Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State as a case study, marriage rites are either being modernised to the extent that it is losing their authenticity and value. If care is not taken, in a few years, individuals will just move in with each other without following the proper cultural procedures as regards marriage union between both parties, thereby cracking the foundation upon which very important aspects of human existence such as family and values, lie. This paper is an ethnographic study of some of the changes that have occurred in Traditional Marriage customs in Otukpo as well as some aspects that have continued despite the evolution of these traditional marriage customs. The paper serves as a form of documentation for the future. At the same time, it serves as a call for the dire need to preserve this cultural heritage by maintaining the practices and rites involved in marriage in the study area. The method of research involves primary and secondary method
