Twenty-First Century Skills Needed by Business Education Graduates of Tertiary Institutions: Observation from Business Educators in Enugu State, Nigeria
This study examines the 21st-century skills essential for the employability of Business Education
graduates, as perceived by business educators in Enugu State tertiary institutions. The study's primary objective
was to identify the competencies required by graduates for successful employment in Nigeria's labour market. A
descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a population of 69 business educators from the Association
of Business Educators of Nigeria (ABEN), Enugu State Chapter. The entire population was studied using a
structured questionnaire titled "Twenty-First Century Skills Needed by Business Education Graduates for
Employability" (TFCSNBEGE), which achieved a Cronbach Alpha reliability index of 0.75. Two research
questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and ttest statistics. The findings revealed that critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, communication, information
literacy, and media literacy are crucial skills for employability. There were no significant differences between
male and female educators' perceptions of these skills. It was recommended that Business Education curricula
emphasize the development of these 21st-century competencies to enhance graduates' employability
Phytochemical Profiling and GC- MS Analysis of Lantana camara Leaf Extract
Identification of the phytochemical composition of plants is vital in new drug discovery and lead
compound development for the management of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Lantana
camara is an important medicinal essential oil-producing plant used in folklore medicine for the
treatment of several diseases. This study evaluated the phytochemical composition and profiled
the biologically active principles present in L. camara leaf extracts collected from Orba, Enugu
State of Nigeria. The profiling of L. camara leaves methanol and aqueous extracts was done
using qualitative and quantitative phytochemical and GC-MS techniques. The phytochemical
screening showed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids and other phenolic
compounds. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in the steroids, saponins,
terpenoids, glycosides and phenolic contents of methanol and aqueous extracts. The phenolic
content in methanol (1563.85±0.07 mg/100g) and aqueous (1425.23±0.36 mg/100g) were
significantly higher than other phytochemicals tested in this study. There was significantly (p <
0.05) higher alkaloids (506.74±5.52 mg/100g), flavonoids (372.04±8.39 mg/100g) and tannins
(1426.43±7.43 mg/100g) in the methanol compared with the aqueous extracts with
349.92±13.10 mg/100g, 231.99±6.16 mg/100g and 1351.62±20.6 mg/100g respectively. The
GC-MS analysis showed the presence of 39 biologically important compounds which included
bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, 9,19-cyclolanostan-3-ol-11-one acetate, 4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-5-
hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl), n-hexadecanoic acid, (Z)-7-hexadecenal, phytol acetate, phytol,
3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol and bicyclo [4.4.0] dec-2-ene-4-ol 2-methyl-9-(prop-1-
en-3-ol-2-yl). The phytochemical analysis and the GC-MS profiling of the extracts of L. camara
showed the presence of biologically important phytochemicals which could be responsible for
the ethnomedicinal effects of L. camara
Appraisal Of Maintenance Conditions Of Residential Buildings In Housing Development Corporation Estates In Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria
Residents always seek to change the use and extend the lives of their buildings by remodelling, modifying or abandoning occupied buildings in the extreme cases of dilapidation. Enugu has faced high building maintenance needs that require the synergy of both residents and facility providers as the needs of the residents would not be met at the rate of population increase. This study aims to appraise the maintenance conditions of physical elements of residential buildings and infrastructure in Housing Development Corporation estates in the Enugu metropolis to improve on the building maintenance framework that could influence design concepts of public residential buildings. The survey design method was applied and it focused on four public residential buildings of ESHDC estates in the Enugu metropolis. After stratification of the estates, based on their ages and simple balloting, occupied buildings were selected for this research. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was used to test differences between the variables Maintenance Conditions of Residential Buildings (MCRB) in ESHDC of Enugu Metropolis V51 (ordinal) and V52 (Nominal). With p<0.05, the study found there was a significant difference between the maintenance conditions of the buildings in the four housing estates investigated. The policy implication of these findings was that for improved building maintenance conditions, efforts should be made to spread across all the buildings by both residents of the estates and ESHDC as implementation would likely be easier for the desired higher commitment to building and infrastructure maintenance

THE PRACTICE OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
several modifications in both ideology and
practice. However, successive governments have
used the mobilization approach. The community
development model of rural development has for
long been applied to Nigeria before the colonial
masters and after their departure and even up to
today. Adequate literature was reviewed covering
wide range of issues on rural development.
Despite, the huge investments on rural
development and strategies many Nigerian rural
communities are not yet fully developed. The
problem was in the implementation of these
strategies. The Capital Maximization Economic Strategy which ensures top-down approach has never had a sustainable impact on beneficiary’s
living
conditions.
Using descriptive and
analytical approach with anecdotal evidence
gleaned from a qualitative and historical
literature on rural development, self-help
development strategy. The study revealed that
control over decision and resources eluded the
agents of change in rural community. Since the
rural people real agents of change were not
involved in the decision making their priority
were not known. Therefore, they had little or no
commitment to the project implementation. If the
rural people were involved at the decision stage,
they will see the project as theirs and even
continue where the government stopped if they
could not finish the project. Moreover, in many
rural communities, women are discriminated
against in inheritance right, decision making
mostly at the village level and non-empowerment
of women were among the factors that led to
underdevelopment of rural communities
Engaging The Traditional Rulers In Curbing Violence And Insecurity At The Grassroots Level In Enugu State, Nigeria
The ubiquitous phenomena of unrest, conflicts,
violence, and poverty in Nigeria have brought forth
questions regarding the role of traditional rulers in
spearheading communities that enjoy, greatly,
freedom from fear and freedom from want. It is
upon this backdrop that this pilot research is
anchored, on engaging the traditional rulers, who
are the closest authorities to these areas, in curbing
violence and insecurity at the grassroots level. This
paper aimed to ascertain the role of traditional
rulers in curbing insecurity at the grassroots level is
also aimed to identify the nature of violence and
insecurity peculiar with grassroots communities in
Enugu State and further aimed to improve the
capacity of traditional rulers for sustainable peace
and security at the grassroots level. The descriptive
research design was used. Stratification sampling
technique was respectively used to select the
respondents. The target population for this study
was 30 traditional rulers. Structured questionnaires
were used for data collection. Ten traditional rulers
were randomly selected from the three geo-political
zones of the state. The number of the questionnaires
was 30 which was administered and returned during
a focus group discussion. All the 30 questionnaires
were submitted. Simple percentages, tables, graphs
and charts were adopted for data analysis. As a
result of the findings from the questionnaire, a
workshop on capacity building for traditional rulers
on conflict management was conducted. The study
findings indicate that traditional rulers play
minimal role in addressing conflicts, violence and
insecurities at the grassroots level. It revealed that
there are common violence, conflicts and
insecurities existing at the grassroots level in the three geo political zones of Enugu State. It also
revealed that the majority of the traditional rulers
lack the capacity and knowledge of peace building
and conflict management. Recommendations are
made along these line
SUCCESS WITHOUT SUCCESSOR: EVIDENCE FROM FAMILY BUSINESS IN ENUGU STATE
The study evaluated the Success without successor: evidence from Family business in Enugu State. The
specific objectives of the study were to: examine the relationship between competence culture and
survival of family owned business and determine the relationship between nurturing and mentoring
on the survival of family owned business. The study used the descriptive survey design approach. The
primary source of data was the administration of questionnaire. A total population of 310 business
owners and employees was used. Two hundred and fifty two (252) returned the questionnaire and
accurately filled. Data was presented and analyzed using Likert Scale and the hypotheses using Pearson
correlation (r). The findings indicated that Competence culture had significant positive relationship
with the survival of family owned business r (95, n=252), = .518 < .779, p<.05 and Nurturing and
mentoring had significant positive relationship with the survival of family owned business in Enugu
State, r (95, n=252), = .380 < .769, p<.05. The study concluded that competence culture and nurturing
and mentoring had significant positive relationship with the survival of family. The study
recommended among others that Parents are advised to look into the ability and capability of their
children before handling over the family business to them. Not all family culture should be adopted in
the business, for instance, the culture of primogeniture in which the first child inherits the parents
property
NARRATIVES OF ABSURDITY IN ALBERT CAMUS:IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN EXPERIENCE
This paper aims at a logical analysis of absurdity in the narratives of Albert Camus
and its implications for human experiences. In order to achieve the desired aim,
this paper employs analytic method of research to examine the concept of
absurdity in the narratives of Camus and in correlation with human experiences.
Absurdity refers to the human experience in the world as meaningless, hopeless,
incongruent, irrational yet extremely ridiculous and unfairly in consistent. Most
unfortunately, the world itself is silent to this extremism and human reason is
impelled to seek clarity about the meaning of the world, human experience andlife.
Absurdity according to Camus’ narratives include; absurd man, absurd freedom,
absurd world, etc. He typified the conditions of the absurd man in three narratives;
Myth of Sisyphus, Don Juan who is a serial seducer and the Stranger. These
narratives of the absurd in Albert Camus beg for dynamisms of solutions/options
such as suicide, Leap of Faith or Philosophical Suicide and revolt. On appraisal,
this paper shows that neither of these options offers good prospects out of
absurdityastheyareself-defectiveanddestructive.Theycanbeatbestdescribed
as false solutions to the problem of absurdity. Inconclusion, like Camus, this paper
insists that we ought to constantly and relentlessly struggle to find meaning and
purpose in a seemingly chaotic and illogical world. Rather than seek false solutions,
there is need to take up ownership and responsibility of our lives
