Tax Reforms and Revenue Generation in Nigeria: A Focus on Enugu State
For some time in the past, tax reforms have been implemented in Nigeria quite
often as a strategy for improving revenue collection. That notwithstanding, Nigeria’s
economy has remained in a state of distress for inadequacy of revenue. This study
examines the extent to which tax reforms have boosted revenue generation in Nigeria,
using historical research design and with particular attention to Enugu State. It finds that,
though Nigeria’s tax revenue has shown a declining trend over the past decade, tax
reforms in Nigeria have had positive and significant effect on revenue generation. It
recommends that governments at federal and state levels should be resilient in
implementing strategic reforms. Further, they should strive to obtain optimal
commitments from the work force of their revenue agencies and deploy technology
innovatively for automating their tax management and operational processes
Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations: A Case for the American-Type Federal System in Nigeria
Federalism is widely regarded as a formidable tool for managing plural societies.
The federalist structure has remained relevant in Nigeria because it has been considered the
style of government that captures our heterogeneous size, cultural diversity and ethno-religious pluralism. It is perceived as the ideal administrative system for a country with a
multicultural audience. However, Nigeria’s federalist style of administration, as codified in
the 1999 constitution, has been a subject of controversy amongst political and constitutional
analyst. Many have come to the conclusion that a pseudo-federalist system of government is
what is obtainable in Nigeria. The idea for this research paper stemmed from the need to
provide an in-depth analysis and report in response to the various controversial speculations
that have raised the disconcerting constitutional question as to whether the Nigerian
federalist structure is a crystal re lection of the US federalist system, or a warped version of
it perhaps a replica of India's quasi-federalist system. This paper adopts a comparative study
that examines the Nigerian federal structure and that of the United States, with the United
States' federal system serving as a lens through which this analysis is made. The aim of this
study is to provide a comprehensive and detailed report that objectively reflects the degree
of Nigeria’s federalism
University Education and the Holistic Empowerment of Female Science Students in Enugu Education Zone, Nigeria
The study investigated the impact of university education on the holistic empowerment of female
science students in the Enugu Education Zone, Enugu State, Nigeria. The research was guided by
three specific objectives: assessing intellectual empowerment, evaluating financial empowerment,
and exploring socio-cultural empowerment among the students. Utilizing a quantitative research
paradigm, the study employed a descriptive survey design. A simple random sampling technique
was applied to select 480 female science students from the Faculty of Education across three
universities. Data were collected using a well-structured questionnaire, validated by two specialists
in Science Education and Measurement and Evaluation. The internal consistency of the instrument
was confirmed through Cronbach's Alpha. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation,
addressed the research questions, while inferential statistics, specifically an independent t-test,
were used to test the hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05. Findings indicated that university
education significantly contributes to the intellectual and financial empowerment of female science
students but does not substantially enhance their socio-cultural empowerment. This suggests that
in the Enugu Education Zone, cultural norms still favour men over women, regardless of
educational attainment. The study recommends that female science students be afforded equal
opportunities and fair treatment in all aspects of societal life, like their male counterparts
IMPACT OF ICT FACILITIES ON THE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF ECONOMICS CURRICULUM IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ENUGU STATE
This study assesses the availability and utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities in the implementation of the Economicscurriculum in tertiary institutions in Enugu State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was employed, involving 127 respondents—39 lecturers and 88 students—from five tertiary institutions. The findings reveal that while 60% of institutions havedesktop computers available for teaching Economics, only 40% have projectors, and no institutions had interactive whiteboards. Moreover, internet access was available in only 60% of the institutions. Despite these resources, ICT tools are underutilized; for instance, while computers were highly utilized (mean score of 3.20), the use of internet for student assignments was low (mean score of 2.40), and interactive whiteboards were rarely used (mean score of 1.50). The study emphasizes the need for improved ICT infrastructure, regular training for lecturers, and enhanced internet connectivity. Recommendations include strategic investments to bridge the urban-rural digital divide and policies to promote ICT integration in teaching, ultimately improving the quality of Economics education in the region
Hate Speech and State Censorship: An Imperative for the Reappraisal of the Constitutional Right to Free Speech in Nigeria
Has Treatment Seeking Behaviour Changed in People Living with Epilepsy? Experience of People Living with Epilepsy Attending Adult Neurology Clinics in Enugu
BACKGROUND: Over the years efforts has been made through
public health education to change the knowledge, attitude and
practice of epilepsy and seizures among the populace in Nigeria. One
surrogate method of reviewing the impact of these educational
interventions include changes in treatment seeking behavior of
People Living With Epilepsy and the reasons for their choices of
treatment.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were
collected from People Living With Epilepsy attending the medical
outpatient clinics in two tertiary hospitals in Enugu, Enugu State
southeast Nigeria.
RESULTS: A total 276 people living with epilepsy were recruited
with a mean age of 30.1 years and a median age of 25 years. After the
onset of epilepsy, 76(27.5%) and 70(25.4%) visited general hospitals
and teaching hospitals respectively, while prayer houses and
traditional healing centers were first visited by 54(19.6%) and
40(14.5%) respectively. As a second choice of care 9(3.3%) and
13(4.7%) visited prayer houses and traditional healing centers. Only
42(15.2%) selected their treatment center because they were
confident of getting a cure however, this was highest for those that
visited traditional healing centers 11(27.5%). The age of onset of
epilepsy positively correlated with selecting orthodox treatment at
the choice of care, while occupational status negatively correlated
with selecting orthodox care at the same period.
CONCLUSIONS: Health care seeking behaviors among PLWE in
Southeast Nigeria might have changed over the years as more people
living with epilepsy were more likely to select orthodox treatment
compared to non-orthodox means of treatment
Innovative Pedagogical Approaches in Science Education in the Post Covid-19 Pandemic World
This paper discusses innovative teaching methods in science education after the COVID- 19
pandemic era. Due to the COVID- 19 epidemic, schools and institutions have been forced to move
to online learning and have encountered several difficulties. As a result, scientific education has
started to rely more and more on modern pedagogical approaches that are more adapted to distance
learning. This study examines several innovative educational practices, the issues the epidemic
presents, the effectiveness of those techniques in addressing those challenges, and prospective
prospects for advancing science education. In doing so, it will examine innovative methods for
teaching science, point out the need for more varied approaches, and evaluate how novel
pedagogical approaches affect student engagement and knowledge acquisition. Conventional
teaching methods take care of learners centred and media interactions for example teaching with
zoom and other varied examples

number. Two hundred and sixty-six (266) employees returned their questionnaire and accurately
filled. That gave 90 percent response rate. The validity of the instrument was tested using content
analysis and the result was good. The reliability was tested using the Pearson correlation coefficient
(r). It gave a reliability co-efficient of 0.77 which was also good. Data was presented and analysed
by mean score and standard deviation using Sprint Likert Scale. The hypotheses were analysed using
Z - test statistic tool. The findings indicated that Leadership had significant positive effect on the
employee monitoring, Z (95, n = 266), 6.070 < 9.381, P. <. 05. Problem-solving had positive significant
effect on continuous feedback of food and beverage firms in Enugu State, Z (95, n = 266), 6.131 <
9.718 P. <. 05. The study concluded that Leadership and problem-solving had significant positive
effect on the employee monitoring and continuous feedback of food and beverage firms in Enugu
State. The study recommended among others that the management of food and beverage
manufacturing firms should know that Leadership helps to direct an organization's resources for
improved efficiency and the achievement of goals and therefore should not be neglected
Assessment of Renal and Cardiovascular Toxicity of Pefloxacin(anAntibiotic) in Albino Rats
Background: Pefloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent which possesses broad
activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Several reports have revealed organs/tissuestoxicity of some antibiotics. Hence, the present study was designed to monitor some biomarkersofcardiovascular and renal systems in albino rats administered pefloxacin, an antibiotic drug. Methodology: Twenty-four adult male albino rats, divided into four groups (A, B, C and D, of sixrats ineachgroup), were used in this research. Group D was the control group. Groups A, B, and Cwere administered(through oral intubation) 5.7, 11.4 and 17.1 mg/kg body weight of pefloxacin solution respectivelyfor sevenconsecutive days. Results: At the end of the administration, there was a decrease in feed and water intake accompaniedbyadecrease in physical activities and body weights in the test animals compared to the control. There wasalsoasignificant (P<0.05) increase in serum levels of creatinine, urea, uric acid total cholesterol, triglycerides, lowdensity lipoprotein, cardiac troponin I, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, while highdensitylipoprotein decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the groups administered the drug compared tothecontrol. These effects of pefloxacin were observed to be dose-dependent. Conclusion: The findings of this research are indicative that the antibiotic may be toxic to the renal andcardiovascular systems. Thus, it should be avoided by patients having any disorder related to the renal andcardiovascular systems
