Assessing impacts of Ken-Betwa Inter-linking River project on livelihoods
Bundelkhand region is examined as one of the most challenged regions in India both in terms of economy and living conditions. The scenario of the region gets worsen due to the deficiency of both irrigation and drinking water facilities. Due to which the crop productivity gets directly impacted resulting in low and bad quality produce. The need to provide water facilities to these deficit regions is a problem that requires immediate solution. The Ken-Betwa interlinking river project is one of the key solutions that can change the perspective of the Bundelkhand region by transferring surplus water from the Ken River to the Betwa basin. This interlinking will benefit lakhs of farmers, residents and stakeholders in the long term.
As a large-scale project, the impact to the environment, the social population and the economics is also a seen as a great challenge. Some minute level strategies and adaptation along with the infrastructural construction is expected to bring positive results. Although the negative externalities of the project cannot be ignored, which are required to be minimized to a great extent. The impact on the day to day lives of the proximate settlements is required to provide with ample of opportunities to improve their main source of income, that is agriculture and diversify their employment prospects.
The data collected in order to achieve a better livelihood condition in the worst impacted areas of the Bundelkhand region. In order to achieve better irrigation facilities & agriculture produce, better & diversified economic opportunities, and better living conditions, various long term and short-term strategies needs to be implemented in the proximate areas of the linking project. These strategies broadly involve the socio-economic development and the strengthening of the industrial linkages, majorly in the agro-based industries
A case of north paravur municipality, Kerala, India
When floods ravaged the Kerala state in 2018 and 2019, the severely affected areas in the Ernakulam district included mainly four municipalities namely, Angamali, Perumbavoor, Aluva and North Paravur. The study area, North Paravur municipality is located at northwestern part of district Ernakulam, adjoining with the district Thrissur. It comes within the northern outskirts of the city Kochi, located about 20 kilometres away from the central part of Kochi. Since the Paravur tehsil is situated in the flat delta region of the Periyar River, the study area is located within the Periyar River basin. The study area is thus having several water canals, which have occasioned in the development of numerous islands. It was observed that the land on the banks of water bodies and the wetlands that were converted to other land uses, were affected the most by flooding in the North Paravur municipality. Presence of adequate wetlands and planned human settlements would have controlled the extent of the damages due to flood, in the municipality. However, since the advent of urbanization, excessive pressure on wetlands and floodplain areas were created, especially near the city centres like Kochi and its conurbations, including study area.
In this, an attempt is made to study the existing urban settlement pattern and landuse changes of the study area in the context of riverine floods, which is followed by identification, and mapping of the past-inundated areas and flood vulnerability zones. Also through the study, an attempt will be made to suggest relevant solutions, considering the adverse effects of frequent floods, and will be proposing a flood-resilient modification of the urban settlement pattern of the study area through planning. In addition, conservation strategies in order to protect and restore the wetlands will be discussed. The study will also look on the problems linked with existing land use or planning of future urban settlements and will suggest some solutions for the same aiming the planners and stakeholders involved
Disaster prevention in hill town: a case of Naharlagun town, Arunachal Pradesh/
Disaster such as earthquakes, fire, landslide, flashflood have caused immense loss of lives, and property. It has hindered and slowed down the process of infrastructure development in Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh. Naharlagun town is prone to disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, etc. Arunachal Pradesh has experienced high magnitude earthquakes in 1941, 1947, 1950, and several earthquakes thereafter. Naharlagun too has faced major flashfloods during 1961, 1994, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2014 and now flashfloods are occurringin a regular phenomenon. Arunachal Pradesh is among one of the highest receiving rainfall zones in the world receiving 2500-3000mm average annually.The Landslides and Floods in Naharlagun occur majorly due to the prevailinggeo morphologic, topographical and hydro-metrological features. Its declining forest cover had led to erosion of productive agriculture/ horticulture fields. The entire area is under high active seismic zone V. Naharlagun felt tremors of low magnitude from time to time, which results in soil loosening and occurrence of gaps in the hilly slopes. This triggers landslide during monsoon season. The study area is located in the highly fragile mountain land where the condition of environment and the ecological risks of resource utilization are closely associated with each together.The uncontrolled unplanned rapid growth of population in Naharlagun has increased burden on the natural resources and thus creating consequent danger on degradation of environment. Particularly a boom in population pressure puts the population at risk from
a natural event. And because of rigorous earth cutting for construction of new road, buildings have decreased the strength of the. Regolith cover and has made the slopes more exploitable to slope failure. This study aims to propose for disaster prevention measures in hill town. The main focus of this study is on landslide and flashflood/flood in the environmental vulnerability neighborhood. This study has three objectives, (i) is to
map the vulnerability in the study area (municipal ward wise) where the disaster affected areas and disaster-prone areas (municipal ward wise) are identified through site visit which has been cross checked with disaster management authority using google earth; (ii) to ascertain the causes of vulnerability where academic and officials were interviewed using descriptive questions and a qualitative survey was also used for interviewing
stakeholders through scalable questionnaire; (iii) to suggest disaster prevention measures for securing the study area from respective vulnerabilities following the guiding principle of Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction 2015-2030 and suggesting the enactment and enforcement of different acts which inter alia include Guwahati water bodies (preservation and conservation) Act, Building Byelaws Meghalaya, the Forest Act
and the Environmental Protection Act

In India, freight cargo transportation accounts for nearly 67 per cent of all goods moved by road transportation and as demand for commodities continues to rise, it is anticipated that goods movement would expand to 15.6 trillion tonne-km in 2050. The movement of commodities across the country and beyond its borders has benefited millions of people, making urban freight transportation vital to the city's social and economic development. In India, annual domestic sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles have fallen from 46 percent in 2001-02 to 35 percent in 2013. Light commercial vehicle sales increased from 27 percent to 50 percent within the same time period. This has resulted in an increase in transportation emissions, causes air pollution and higher cost. Light commercial vehicles account for around 74 percent of all urban freight transportation, and travel about 20-25 km inside the city with a maximum average daily distance of 130 kilometres, making Delhi, India's capital, the dominant contributor to urban pollution and the major pollution generated by Light commercial vehicles account for around 74 percent of all urban freight transportation, and travel about 20-25 kilometres within the city with a maximum average daily distance of 130 kilometres. To meet the growing demand for freight transportation, Indian stakeholders must work to transition to a more cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient freight paradigm without exacerbating existing environmental externalities, such as a switch from traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) to battery electric vehicles (BEV). The total cost of ownership of battery electric vehicles with various fuel variations in urban freight operations using light commercial vehicles for a perishable item is assessed in this study. Sensitivity analysis for TCO calculations can show how factors like vehicle use, subsidies, lower battery costs, and so on affect the cost of owning a car. The outcome of this study is to look into the possibilities of urban freight electrification for fruit and vegetable distribution in Delhi using light commercial vehicles, as well as policy-oriented proposals and measures to boost the use of electric vehicles

Reimagining socio-spatial Arrangements of a cultural neighbourhood by tourism: a caseof silk weaving community of Varanasi
Since the beginning of civilizations, we have been sharing our human experiences,
goals, ideas and sentiments with our next generations through the legacies of art and
practices. In its simplest sense, it is the fundamental thread that binds cities and
societies together by providing members with a sense of common identity and legacy.
However, in these times of digging modernization, the role of art and culture in India's
complex cities is dwindling as part of the modern development ideologies. Due to such
discourteous evolution, the communities concerned with the creative sectors are
experiencing social and economic downfall. Creative Industries tend to get located in
urban areas, in small quarters of the cities, forming isolated neighborhoods.
Varanasi sees a large influx of tourists, both national and international, who come for
religious reasons but also to buy handicrafts, particularly sarees, made in the city.
They frequently visit these clusters to observe the saree-making process. However,
the trader and the craftsman are the ones who profit the most from all of this. Weavers
are unable to invest in their businesses since they do not make enough money. Areas
for living and working They don't even have free spots in their clusters, which were
previously available. Used for a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing and reeling.
Their residences and workspaces are divided into several sections, resulting in a
claustrophobic environment. Discussing the case example of the silk weavers, creative
community of Varanasi, the paper unfolds the spatial and hierarchal network of their
neighborhood with the rest of the city through the lens of urban design principles. The
key findings have an important role in promoting the creative economy of this
community through experiential exploration, spatially establishing the link between the
community and its consumers by bringing out the activities of these communities as
an integral part of the urban form (public realm).

Morphological approach towards enhancing the livability in urban fringes: the case of Pune
India is currently undergoing a rapid urban transformation; over the last few years, the
country's cities have grown rapidly, and land usage has shifted from rural to urban on
the outskirts. As a result of this process, opportunities for residential, commercial, and
institutional development have arisen along the urban fringes, which are currently
dominated by residential development. These zones promise a safe, comfortable, and
orderly atmosphere, yet they obstruct movement flows and patterns, social inclusion
and accessibility. The enclave developments and defunct spaces left around
development are severe challenges in developing healthy and livable neighbourhoods.
The Balewadi neighborhood in Pune City is similar. Balewadi is located on the city's
northwestern outskirts, with neighborhoods sprouting up around the two urban
settlements. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effect of urban design in
enhancing livability in a safe and sustainable neighborhood using a morphological
method. The region will be morphologically mapped and analysed in terms of livability,
as well as stakeholder assessments, in order to suggest interventions for improving the
spatial quality of life of residents by proposing design guidelines and typologies for

The Project undertaken is an actual proposed project of a Resort in Jamsoti Village of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh to provide leisure activities in nature and celebration spaces in addition to lodging facilities. The effort is to create an Eco Resort given the context of the Chandraprabha Wildlife sanctuary adjoining to the site. Eco- tourism is not to be limited to Ecology but to include economy and exchange with sustainable practices dictating the functioning of the site at maximum possibility. In the developed design concept, ‘Knowledge through subconscious observations’ through the execution of a meandering trail that halts at various points which each reflect a different aspect. Each of these spaces are spread across the expanse along the walkways and the core is highlighted by a Baradari for musical events and congregation. One cluster can be viewed as a small neighbourhood in the village where lodging and functional buildings are organised around the anchor of the walkways and courtyards

In recent years, India’s coastal regions have become increasingly vulnerable to climate-related risks. The recent severe floods, combined with more intense and frequent cyclones such as Gulab, Tauktae, and Amphan, have caused damage in the country's coastal states. While effective disaster preparedness in many of these states has saved many lives, there are still significant challenges in rebuilding damaged infrastructure and resuming normalcy after disruptions. It became clear that government schemes are highly relevant in the current development context. They are developed for the socio-economic upliftment of the people and the quality of the built environment. Recent national urban development missions resulted in a huge investment of INR 6,85,758 crores in 4,041 Urban Local Bodies across country. Cities can only be smart if they are disaster resilient. This National missions’ guidelines include land use planning, building codes, and the urban heat effect in designated areas. It is now necessary for city disaster management plans to include a component of urban disaster risk reduction and climate change.
Following the synthesis of the literature, it aided in the development of the study's aim and objectives. Following the formulation of objectives based on objectives A field visit, a primary survey, and data collection were all necessary for the study. The acquired data was then analysed, and a qualitative conclusion was drawn from it. The data analysis assisted in identifying difficulties and gaps in the studied area.
This study's literature is derived from online secondary sources such as websites and journals. All literature was classified into four groups. Group literature on climate change and its consequences, as well as why it is relevant in light of the rising frequency of natural disasters, The literature in this group is concerned with rising sea levels and sea surface temperature, as well as how these connect to the frequency of cyclones and their impact on Indian states' coastal areas. Group literature on conventional disaster management standards, including various documents released by the Indian government, particularly for cyclones and floods, In the literature conclusion, it was evident that to increase capacity, these urban missions include designated components that primarily focus on improving city infrastructure and operations, as well as the implementation of new technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
Following the study, it was clear that a huge amount of work had been done in terms of resilience. In addition, the non-governmental organisations that worked on it have suspended activities. and all work was done exclusively in the city's municipal area and ward. The CCR guide is meant to serve as a platform for highlighting community strengths while identifying vulnerabilities and gaps in resilience that the community can address in collaboration with government agencies, nongovernmental organisations, the private sector, and other stakeholders. The city is becoming more susceptible, posing significant threats such as increased water stress, the heat island effect, and a rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as urban floods. Three of the most essential sectors driving urban climate action are urban planning, green cover, and biodiversity.
Climate-smart city assessment framework elements and indicators addresses both mitigation and adaptation concerns. The required data is as specified by the city
administration's indicator. However, indicators do not address the qualitative components of data. The disaster management department, according to the survey, is independent from the municipal corporation and the urban local body SUDA. According to Intel, CSCAF is assisting cities in becoming climate resilient at the implementation level, but there is still a long way to go. To build a credible argument, the implications of climate change are also studied, and several mapping analyses are performed for the years 2011 and 2021, including land-use land cover shift, land surface temperature, slope & elevation, watershed, and land degradation. Lulc represents the city's growth path, which is towards the sea, making the city increasingly susceptible. We can clearly conclude from this analysis that climate change consequences are there, and that this is primarily due to urbanisation and an increase in industrial pollutants. As major issues like haphazard development, lack of flood plain zoning and eco-sensitive planning, lack of strict implementation mechanisms and planning in the city's periphery, outdated infrastructural facilities, clogged, and contaminated storm water networks, land use inconsistencies, loss of water bodies, and lack of open spaces emerged.
Following that, methods to increase flood resilience in the city were investigated, including the incorporation of nature-based solutions and green infrastructure, as well as an integrated approach between the many national urban missions and their implementation. The ACCRN foundation had developed an early warning system for the city. The city requires pre-disaster spatial strategies, The primary survey identified institutional gaps and obstacles in the master plan, which will be addressed by the national mission, particularly the Smart City Mission and AMRUT. Area Based Development is one of the components of Smart City, in which greenfield development will be used for nature-based solutions for identified sites, and ICCC will be used for ICT-based mapping for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation. Green space development will be used for solutions under AMRUT stormwater management. Finally, the proposed project and land use invention will be incorporated into the city's future master plan.
