Redevelopment of Barik point, Shillong a negotiation of Aspirations
“Architecture gives identity to the city and shapes people's lasting impression of the city.” Civic buildings have been constructed through all human civilizations. These archetypes form vital building blocks of a city and support local economy, culture and everyday life. Building for the public has always been an important aspect and concern for modern development. When we look at recent Urban development trends however, we can see that while creating civic buildings such as malls, bus terminals, convention centers, etc, a repetition of the same banal blueprint is being repeated. This is done without much engagement with the local culture, community and lifestyle. This has led to a loss of identity causing placelessness in buildings and public places. This same phenomenon was observed in the Redevelopment of Barik point, Shillong, where an urban center with rich cultural identity was set to be clean slated for the construction of an international world class mall. Where the community's aspirations and existing public life, heritage and identity were completely ignored. Considering Shillong’s cultural diversity, ethnicity mix, and strong identity, Barik point has a potential of becoming a vibrant public space adapted around heritage buildings: where a diverse group of people can have a cohesive and interactive environment. The aim of this thesis is to understand Barik Point as a public space, inquire into the people’s aspiration for the redevelopment, identify opportunities for redevelopment, create new economic catalysts for engagement and develop a shared, equitable public space that acts like a living room for the city of Shillong. This thesis culminates into a Socio-cultural hub with equitable shared public space that the people can relate and identify with.

REDEVELOPMENT OF NEW DELHI RAILWAY STATION AS A MULTI MODEL TRANSIT HUB
Railway Industry has been a trusted service provider in India for more than a century and has played
a pivotal role in connecting masses across India, helping it compete in the global market as a strong
contender as well. Even today, rail prevails as the most economic and feasible method for transport
across cities. Unfortunately, with the development of cities and urban areas, stations have not been
developed alongside with the initiative of future or sustainability in mind and they are still viewed as
filthy and crowded areas as a place to just board trains.
Railway stations are an untapped resource in the Indian economy which can not only help in
generating revenue, but also act as catalysts for the development of areas around them.
This thesis aims at redeveloping the existing New Delhi Railway Station into a modern station,
integrating all the transport systems in the area using a place-node model of development. In doing
so, it focuses on creating a threshold, which acts as the Eastern gateway into the city and as a third
place which is formed from the merging of transit and the city. This thesis also aims to explore a new
typology of stations, with the insertion of office and retail functions in the station district, and on
how to develop this assemblage of areas with minimal impact on the environment while being able
to generate a dialogue with the city that surrounds it.
The project conceives a station that is not just remembered as platforms, but as a centre, a space for
activities and or just lingering. A station that connects the city instead of breaking it into two halves

Disasters are single-handedly responsible for hindering any nation’s growth. Being a multi-disaster prone region, the North-eastern part of India suffers due to economic backwardness and being geographically isolated. This has further magnified the impact of disasters as well as caused hindrance in achieving overall development. Being resource rich but regularly affected by floods from Brahmaputra and its tributaries, the state of Assam continues to suffer economic losses annually.
Assam represents relatively high concentrations of agricultural productivity with paddy, tea being the major crops of the region. Nearly 40% of the total area of Assam is flood prone which also means that those are the areas of intensive agricultural production and development. For the study, one of the north-eastern most district of Assam-Dibrugarh has been selected. It has experienced highest flood events, more than any other place in India. With annual flooding events becoming more devasting coupled with climate change impacts, it adds to the economic burden on this agriculture intensive region. The aim of the study was to assess the spatio-economic aspects at the block level for resilience building. The first objective was to understand the existing framework and the process. For understanding impact of disasters, various frameworks were studied. The second objective was to investigate the spatio-economic aspect for flood disaster. In order to understand this aspect, it is also essential to examine ‘how’ and ‘why’ of flood disasters as well as livelihood opportunities present there, thus making some areas are economically advantaged while others continue to remain disadvantaged. The study brought out the links between people and place for which primary survey helped in understanding the livelihood opportunities with the region and the spatial distribution of economic activities.
The third objective of the research was to assess the critical infrastructure which supports economic activities for which damage assessment was also looked into.
Critical infrastructure assessed were roads, bridges, markets, rural electrification, telecommunication network coverage. The spatial attributes related to critical infrastructure was identified and spatially mapped for better decision making. This part was in tandem with the second objective and based on the stakeholder consultation and primary survey. The fourth objective was to propose policy interventions for resilience building. Three types of measures were looked at- short term, medium term and long term measures, not only in the disaster management process but also in the local and regional planning process. The spatial linkages will be explored for the plan preparation process. In order to integrate spatial planning policy, it is important to look at regional plans in tandem with local area plans and village level plans in order to create catalysing conditions for overall development.
Spatio-Economic attributes are often linked with the spatial concentration of economic activities with respect to a region’s growth and development. While the spatial aspects shed light on the geographical location, the economic aspects highlight the lucrativeness of a region. As the research intends to assess the spatio economic aspect of flood disasters. For the study, Dibrugarh West block has been identified for further examination based on geographical and disaster proneness. The study intends to understand the dynamics of Spatio-Economic aspects for building Resilience towards flood disasters while making Disaster Management plans for any flood disaster-prone region. This research intends to bring spatial, environmental, and economic linkages to the forefront of the disaster management process for plan preparation. The study highlights on the importance of integration of data, institutions, infrastructure and spatio-economic dynamics in order to ‘adapt’, ‘learn’ and ‘transform’ for building Resilience
Eco cultural landscape restoration of Dhanushkodi
Living near the seaside is always a difficulty because of unforeseen events such as storms and flooding. Despite its origins, many towns have settled along the coast and thrived in this ever-changing climate. However, cumulative human activities and rising urban development in coastal areas frequently result in unintended and unwelcome environmental consequences that endanger human well-being.
Dhanushkodi's cultural and ecological relevance is defined in this study. Dhanushkodi was provoked by massive waves in 1964, which demolished the entire town and killed over 1,800 people. The city is now known as the ghost town and the lost town. The archaeological heritage site is currently under anthropogenic strain, and ecological sensitive zones are being degraded by a wide range of sources. Dhanushkodi possesses both cultural and heritage elements, as well as scenic and picturesque value.
Coastal tourism is based on a unique combination of resources on the border between land and sea: sun, water, beaches, exceptional views, rich biodiversity, and good transport infrastructure. All these three broad areas of research are interrelated. Thus, I have collaborated to do experiments with seaside landscapes for disaster mitigation through green infrastructure techniques.

Review of smart city components: an assessment of implementation of ares based development strategy, Gwalior/
One-third of the population in India can be catalogued as an urbanite. Today, a significant share of people moves to the cities contributing to urbanization and this fact cannot be disputed. The Government of India has been trying to resolve the issues of urban India that have been there for as long as late 1970s with various schemes like Mega city, JNNURM and Smart city being the latest. Smart Cities Mission (SCM) was set in
motion since June 2015 to enable improved living conditions and to achieve higher economic growth in 100 existing cities. Total INR of 48,000 crore (US$ 7.4 billion) was decided to be consumed in the next 5 years (2015-16 to 2019-20).The mission constitutes of two approaches: Area-based development where in city
renewal, retrofitting or greenfield development is carried out in delineated area of the city and Pan city promoting digital solutions in larger part of the city. To ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated, and successful implementation of Smart City Proposal is taken care of, it is of vital importance to have
a methodical framework for both the area-based and PAN city approach. This study, however, is limited to the examination of ABD in delineated part of the city of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The research explores SC implementation in Gwalior that’s undergoing a smart transformation currently with its various Projects. Out of all the modules of Smart city proposal, the modules like- Heritage & Culture Module(M1), Infrastructure Module(M3), Mobility Module(M4), Social & Recreation Development Module(M5), Economy Module(M7) and Sustainability Module(M8) were studied in detail in this study. During examination of the projects in Gwalior, the
research also explores the perception of public in the city Smart city projects are considered to be a method for performing Service delivery. Hence SERVQUAL scores have been used to determine the level of services delivery in various modules of ABD strategy at Gwalior. This research will be useful to 1) cities (in developed and developing nations) who are implementing SC projects now, by providing a framework to systematically examine the strategy for successful project implementation; and 2) communities/institutions (especially in developing nations) proposing Smart City initiatives by helping them focus on components, goals,

A case of Delhi
Large scale spatial urbanization is taking place in India. Over the years, population of India is moving towards urban centers in search of education, employment, and better livelihood opportunities. Share of urban population has increased substantially in India during the last decade as it increased from 31.28 percent in 2011 to 34.93 percent by 2020 (Source: The World Bank). Many urban cities including Delhi are facing tremendous pressure on its existing infrastructure due to the influx of migrants from rural areas.
In this context, role of Smart City becomes pertinent due to shrinking urban land space and to provide modern amenities to the increasing urban population. Government of India has planned to set up 100 smart cities across India in 2015 covering 21 percent of India’s Urban Population. In this study, an effort was made to analyze connectivity to city-level amenities and locational attributes, proximity and quality of local-level public amenities, the quality and availability of infrastructure, socio-economic aspects including safety and security, housing, and environmental and visual characteristics of the landscape. A community's livability is influenced by a variety of factors, including its physical and natural environments, its economy, its social cohesion and fairness, its educational possibilities, and its cultural and recreational offerings.
A comparison of the resident’s livability standards with respect to available product quality (relating to service infrastructure such as water, electricity, connectivity, proximity to markets, recreation, and physical exercise, etc.) in the past and the present has been analyzed. Case studies of the best practices available across the world also has been analyzed to understand the quality of life and livability of the people in other cities
Location planning and estimation of total number of charging stations for electric vehicles
Gasoline powered vehicles are major source of GHG emissions and air pollution. Public Transport, Shared Mobility, Electric Vehicles are the mitigation measures for reducing emissions. Electric Vehicles are step toward clean energy’s vision. India has 14 out of 20 worlds most polluted cities, also imports of oil are 4 % of GDP. Hence, the move toward electrical vehicles is welcomed. As it cost less than Internal Combustion Engines Vehicles. Government of India has prepared handbook named as ―Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Implementation‖. According to Electrical Vehicles Handbook, the step-by-step approach includes Overview, Governance, demand assessment and target setting, planning of location and land allocation, connection to grid, integration of EV-grid, Models of implementation. Location planning and land allocation is that part which has urban planning component on which the methodology is provided. Existing methodology to plan for location is following. First, dividing the area under planning into cells, Parameter identification that that indicate potential demand of charging, Data values to be mapped on the cells of grid, weightage assigning to various values and parameters, calculating the number of charging points required in each cell size of 1 sq. km. Principle of location planning is maximisin utilization and accessibility, minimizing cost. Indicators for accessibility are visibility, major roads’ access, 24x7 access and access to local roads. Indicators for utilization are density of employment and population, volumes of traffic, transit stations and point of interests. Indicators for cost minimization, land cost, power supply cost, connection cost, EVSE cost. The Location planning aspects does not include the importance of traffic and transportation systems. Like how, the traffic volume, origin destination patterns, accessibility to point of interests (Parking (on street and off street), charging plazas, petrol pumps, metro stations and highways) will be accessed. There is a lack of sighting from traffic flow perspective. To work it out, Methodology is prepared. As the first objective is to identify the number of charging points required in the area. For that RTO data is collect and then estimated were made for the year 2025 and 2030. Then, EV penetration rate for 2025 and 2030 is taken using which number of charging points are estimated. This is done as per the share of public charging which is provided in handbook. As per second objective, public charging points are identified like parking sites (off street as well as on street). At these points surveys are conducted to find out the Turnover, Accumulation, Parking Index and Duration. Using that data, charging points were allocated at sites. As per third objective, Available market layouts are fitted on the sites to find out the feasibility. Gaps have been found out and recommendations have been made.
Expected outcome involves - How the traffic and transportation related aspects can be added in location planning of charging infrastructure? As the situation for Electric vehicle will be different than ICE hence, the waiting time and charging time and service rate at charging station are not similar and it is a whole system change. Hence, new outcome will arrive at locations. At the end, recommendations have been made by comparing chargers and scope with battery swapping is seen
Planning for integration of NMT with public transportation: a case of Patna/
A city's public transportation system is one of its most important urban infrastructure systems. It is the key component of sustainable transport system. Good public transport enhances connectivity and mobility. It plays an important role in a city’s economy and its social equity. It is also instrumental in reducing automobile dependence and traffic congestion. Following economic reforms, India's cities have experienced tremendous urban expansion and, as a result, increased travel demand. Rapid motorization had led to severe congestion, longer journeys and higher per capita trips. So, planner’s focus should be on how to make it more sustainable, how to evolve the kind of system that has very less impact on the environment, and it is viable, can serve to the people and can be accessible. One way to improve the accessibility of a public transportation system is to
integrate it with NMT, or active transportation, which emphasizes the planning, operation, and maintenance of walking and cycling above automobiles.If we look at transportation in general, it adheres to the concept of mobility, along with mobility comes the concept of accessibility, because when we are moving, we
also want to access those destinations. So, how good is the access to these points, when we look it from the accessibility point of view, that is when non-motorized transportation modes, their role becomes more prominent. Improved accessibility for users is very important for reducing the dependence on motorized transport. Non-motorized transport makes cities and communities safer, more accessible, and greener. This study aims to improve First and last-mile connectivity by integrating NMT with Public Transport in Patna. Public transportation agencies often provide bus and train services that can shape the course of the trip, but users must complete the first and last part on their own; they must first walk, drive, or roll over to a nearby place. The lack of adequate walking and cycling facilities in the city exacerbates the problem of public transport users. This study will first look at the ridership of public transportation on two identified routes in Patna, and then
compute the challenges and issues that people face when it comes to not using public transportation, as well as what changes and improvements could encourage them to do so.
