Resilient design approach for eco-sensitive peri-urban areas: a case of Puzhal lake catchment area, Chennai
Chennai is a city with various water sources like rivers, lakes/ reservoirs, and tanks.
Yet the city experiences floods and drought alternating every year. One major
reason for the issue is the rapid urbanization in the water catchment areas of these
water resources. In the core areas of Chennai, most of the lakes and tanks have
become distinct because of the rapid urbanization trends at the global level.
Chennai has a vast peripheral line where the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA)
has been spread out over almost 3 districts in the state, making it the second largest metropolitan city after Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR). While the
government has been striving to match the demands of the people in the city, on
the other end trying to resolve the environmental problems like floods and
droughts. The peri-urban areas in the cities are the vulnerable areas where the
change can be brought in. Peri-urban areas can be of various characteristics like
the IT, industrial, tourism, etc. but all these factors should blend in with the
ecological factors in the neighbourhood.
The existing strategies in the greenfield development areas have a fragmented
development, lacking social cohesion and community sense in comparison to the
urban core areas, which are the oldest communities of the city and have a sense
of belonging and community cohesion which lacks in the peri-urban settlers as they
are mostly the migrant workers or people who tend to live in gated communities,
away from the chaotic urban cores. Social cohesion makes the living quality better
for people enabling them to be self-sufficient and resilient.
A major part of the thesis is to understand the nature of existing water catchment
areas around the selected waterbody and the nature of development happening
around the Puzhal lake and its catchment area. The catchment area surroundings
can be conserved, prioritizing nature over humans. The urbanization that has
already happened in the catchment can be revived or can be preserved from
causing further damage to the catchment terrain by providing urban design
guidelines. In addition to the ecological interventions, creating spaces for the
people of the neighbourhood to utilize the common spaces would form the scopefor urban design interventions. The catchment area, lake, and their peripheries can
be protected to maintain their purpose and prohibit concretization.
The minor part of the thesis is to understand the Peri urban fragments of the city
and the significance of ecology i.e. open spaces, water bodies and the
transformation zone of grey to green spaces, their contribution in making the place
resilient in terms of ecology and social aspects. The thesis focuses on the network
of open spaces in peri urban areas that can be preserved ecologically, serve as an
asset (breathing space), made socially inclusive with the surrounding
neighbourhood, and can make an optimistic difference in the resilience of the
fragmen
Re-imagining an experiential cultural hub in Gurugram
Gurugram is a city of cultural blend. The city was pandavas land anciently. The culture of Gurugram is very diverse and reflects the variety of ethnic groups found in the city. It is the satellite city of Delhi. It is growing very fast in technology and population. It is IT hub fast growing in nearest of the cities. Increasing job opportunities invites a lot of people from all parts of India making Gurugram an immigrant dominated city. The development in the city has resulted less land vacant for farming. All the land is developed in buildings and real estate.
There is a void for public interaction and cultural spaces. Being an immigrant in an unknown city has its own pros and cons. As an immigrant there is a need to express. Expressing emotions through various mediums. Although, there are a lot of shopping complexes and malls in Gurugram, they do not fulfil the need of expressing. A few cultural spaces like Kingdom of dreams, Devi arts foundation and Epicentre are now
closed which creates a void for cultural spaces in Gurugram. In 2011, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram proposed a cultural centre which can fulfil the need of social and public space. The project was recently approved in 2018 but the construction has not started yet. The cultural center proposed will provide a platform for socio-culture essence of the city and showcase the Indian culture and craft. Also, it will provide a
congregational space for urban people and become an urban landmark. This public space will create active and entertaining environment and people get to interact with different cultural activities. This thesis project is an attempt to create a social and public space which will act as a medium of expression for the immigrants as well as locals of the city. The idea is to create a link between people, art & culture by activating a vibrant atmosphere through various performing arts and to create a free environment by inviting the public realm. There is an attempt to place the built form on buildable area as much as possible to prevent cutting of
trees. Designed as an integrated form with series of open and semi open spaces. Large landscaped open spaces all around the complex provide areas for outdoor events and fests with are held in the present scenarios and at the same time it also respects the historic vegetation cover with has a high emotional value
Economic Evaluation of urban traffic improvement through sequential coordination of signals
If the transportation system is efficient, they offer economic and social opportunities and benefits that lead to positive multiplier effects such as better access to the market, employment, and additional investment. Inadequate transportation systems in terms of capacity and reliability can lead to economic costs such as reduced or missed opportunities and poor quality of life. Traffic congestion on the roads and intersections due to increased number of vehicles to serve the ever-increasing population has become a major issue. User spends a major part of its time in traffic congestion and loses its productivity and money in terms of fuel wastage. The losses incurred because of traffic congestion are generally calculated in terms of equivalent monetary losses of environmental losses, productivity losses, monetary loss of time etc. A major part of traffic congestion occurs at road intersections, because of its faulty design or mostly, because of the calculation of signal phase timings which do not serve its purpose of traffic management during the peak hours, resulting in excessive vehicular delays and sometimes, absolute stalling of traffic.
To solve this problem, several infrastructural and technological solutions like road widening, traffic diversion, clearing of illegal encroachment, prevention of illegal on street parking etc., can be envisaged. Infrastructural solutions are mostly expensive and not efficient enough in proportion to the initial investment it requires whereas the technological solutions like Artificial Intelligence in coordinated traffic signaling were found to be comparably more efficient in western countries.
This research will investigate the issue of congestion at road intersection, analyzing its various causative factors and how much this vehicular delay costs to an individual and to the economy of the city as well. It will try to find out best suitable artificial intelligence based solution for easing out the traffic through road intersections to reduce the vehicular delays at the intersections and mitigate the various adverse impacts. The study will also try to analyze the existing traffic scenario in the study location selected for pilot study before deploying Artificial Intelligence based coordinated signal system and again analyzing and interpreting the Pre-coordination and Post-coordination scenario to quantify the efficiency of the coordinated traffic signaling system over conventional traffic signaling systems used in the Indian cities
Urban foodscapes: a means to strengthening identity conviviality and urban experience in Imphal
Food is one of the most basic necessities for human survival. It is a very important
yet often overlooked commodity. To consume it is an intrinsic trait evident since the
beginning of mankind. One of the very first steps toward urbanity was the
consumption of cooked food. And urbanization occurred when humans settled,
began agriculture and domestication, and expanded these further.
Despite being absent from today’s urban planning, food systems had a key role in
building cities and defining foodscapes in the past. Food systems have been major
urban shapers for centuries, dictating internal land uses, routes, the location of public
spaces, and building usages, as well as underlying the city's location, organization,
and scale. Food systems have the potential of creating environmentally, socially, and
economically productive spaces.
Today’s urban form in terms of infrastructures and practices has been widely
influenced by food culture. How food relates to the organization of a city and how it
becomes infrastructure that transforms the urban experience. Therefore, food
becomes an important factor in placemaking (for development and regeneration in
urban areas). It plays a very crucial role in bringing vitality to spaces. The physical
design around food or the foodscape thus becomes an important factor in either
building or ruining urban spaces. Food is also an important aspect of cultural
exchange and identity. It gives us the perception of places and helps in
understanding people and communities. It is a means of knowing the image of a city.
India has a wide and diverse palate and cooking customs- food is an integral
component of our diverse cultural systems and is a major factor in cultural exchange.
In this context, food has been a mainstay in the creation of heritage and its urban
spaces in most Indian cities. Food streets are the living heritage and identity of many
Indian cities. Examples: Khau Gallis of Gujarat, particularly that of Manek Chowk,
Majnu ka Tila, Chandni Chowk in Delhi, etc. The city in the study is Imphal, which is
also the capital of Manipur, a tiny state tucked in the North-Easternmost corner of
India. It is a land of vibrant culture, arts, and nature and is a powerhouse of sports. It
is home to 33 different tribes native to the place and each with its unique traditions
and platters to offer.
The thesis aims to understand the behavior and pattern of habits of people around
food places, and food anchors to create inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable places. Its
goal is to stimulate socio-cultural interchange by promoting various cuisines, with a
focus on local food and boosting spatial sociability through inclusive foodscapes. It
will attempt to use conviviality and placemaking factors of food to introduce and
create new public spaces within the city. The thesis addresses enhancing urban aesthetics and experience by revitalizing existing food anchors. In this context, all of
this will determine the city's gastro tourism potential. The thesis also attempts to
create small food ecosystems by improving connectivity and increasing urban vitality
through communal activities in production, distribution, and consumption spaces
Urban market planning: regulating autopoietic market system case of Beltola Bazaar Guwahati
The pattern of growth is different for cities across the world and the impact of this growth on people is different. This growth is associated with the growth of socio-economic activities occurring within its bounds. In an era that is luring cities around the world towards a global network of megacities, the urbanization of traditional elements of the society, like the marketplace, provides a stark contrast to the homogeneity of the city in midst of continued globalization. These activities need spaces to occur and over time, the place of exchange of goods and ideas began to evolve into markets. These markets attract people from surrounding areas and lead to the growth of these spaces.
The concept of autopoiesis primarily refers to systems that are self-producing not in terms of their physical components, but in terms of their organization. This in turn can be measured in terms of information and complexity of the system. However, with time the autopoietic systems undergo degradation, which needs to be regulated to prevent further issues. This is the third stage of any autopoietic system which include processes like production and bonding, basically describing the life of an organism. Like a living organism, such system produces some elements (here organizations), which bond or link with each other for the system to run efficiently, and the last stage is degradation where the older elements die off and are replaced by new elements or in another scenario the whole system dies out.
For the study, the case of Beltola Market in Guwahati is selected. The market is a lease market and one of the largest markets under the jurisdiction of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). At the same time, it is a market with an ancient origin which makes it historically relevant and therefore is an important market of the city. The market system two-parts part – first the formal shops (including people who have been setting shops in the market for more than 2 decades), and, second the informal vendors, who have outgrown the formal shop owners and have completely changed the urbanscape of the area. This has led to a variety of conflicts over the years. It is a bi-weekly market consisting of 1136 shops (comprising both formal shop owners and informal vendors, handled by a large number of actors and organizations). This occurs on two days of the week – Thursday and Sunday every week and is characterized by mismanaged spaces and congestion. The government of Assam has taken several steps to improve the scenario of this market but the efforts have been in vain or mis-directed which eventually failed to create a difference. This study tries to integrate the different actors of the market who are directly impacted by the market issues (both for the daily and bi-weekly market).
The study showed that the linkages between the different actors are largely organized and eventually add up to the benefit of the system. Both the informal (autopoietic part) and formal parts of the market have several coinciding actors and linkages which have the potential to be tapped into for proposing a regulatory body for the market. The study further conducted showed the interlinkages between the different actors involved or associated with the market functioning. As these actors maintain the market, an efficient network of communication is a necessary aspect needed in the market. This factor was observed to be lacking in terms of the interlinkages of the market space which has led the market into growing in all directions. At the same time, other conflicts like encroachments, localization and lack of amenities were highlighted in the survey, which showed the lack of integration between the government and the market actors. Thus, establishing a proper system of communication is an essential part of developing a regulation strategy for the marketspace.
Upon further inspection, the spatial orientation of the vendors is determined by the time spent in the market. This however is consequential to the various factors analyzed in the study, such as the goods sold, shop sizes, and other factors. This helped in analyzing the market in terms of functional and spatial arrangements and turn helped identify gaps and areas of work. This would help in the regulation of the marketplace and inculcate the different policy level interventions taken by the government. The proposals work towards the integration of the market with the organizing factors of the marke
