    A case of Kanpur

    India prides itself with the world’s youngest population comprising 18% of the 1.3 billion world population aged between 15 to 24 years of age. The Indian Government targeted to enrol 30% of the total population aged between 18 to 23 years in higher education by 2020. Therefore, the associated facilities such as the student housing sector also needs to be developed proportionately. The overall investment in the student housing sector is driven by the huge demand supply gap, high returns as well as low risks due to the lower churning rates that lead to a stable cash flow. However, the concept of student housing is still evolving in India as well as the Covid-19 disease has impacted each and every sphere of human life directly or indirectly. Student housing has also been impacted on various levels, leaving the stake holders to cope in one or the other way. This research aims to study the impact of Covid-19 on unorganized segment of the student housing i.e., the business to consumer (B2C) sector in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur has a high student population due to various institutes of national and regional importance including IIT, GSVM, HBTU, PSIT, Kanpur University, Rama University, etc. The study is initiated by exploring student housing in various cities across the country as well as on global level and the best practices followed. We then proceed to identify the various pockets of student housing in Kanpur followed by identifying the various stakeholders involved. We then attempt to understand the market segregation and post Covid scenario of student housing in 2 selected wards i.e., ward 30 (Kakadeo) and 61 (Nawabganj). The study talks about the demand and supply sides of the market and assess the impact Covid had on respective stakeholders on either side of the market. The study is concluded by suggesting provisions for the entry of organised players into an unorganised student housing market like Kanpur

    Wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland, or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent, or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish, or salt including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters. Land use changes in the catchment, pollution from households and industry, encroachments, tourism, and overexploitation of their natural supply are all anthropogenic stresses on wetlands. Wetlands are among of the most productive environments on the globe, so their degradation is a reason for concern. They frequently support large populations of creatures, including mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates, and many of these species use them as nurseries. Kaluveli is one such wetland, which supports unique and diverse habitats and acts as a major migrating station for migratory birds. The shallow waterbody, widespread grasslands, marshes, flora and fauna of Kaluveli forms a balanced ecosystem. Human inference into the wetland, sometimes tends to disturb the balance in the ecosystem. And hence the government of Tamilnadu has declared the 5151 hectares of the lake as a bird sanctuary on 6th December,2021. The thesis proposal of an ornithological reserve and a visitors’ center is to help the recover and maintain the ecosystem of the site with various research and to guide the visitors in the right direction to have the best views of the birds without disturbing them.     INTERGENERATIONAL CENTRE FOR SENIORS AND ORPHANED CHILDREN, MOHALI

    Within rapidly changing population and household structures in India, there is an ongoing wave of demographic shift. Such a shift is largely impacting two generations at a time, the seniors – vulnerable to isolation, and the at-risk children. There a high degree of social isolation that the two user groups are facing due to low or absence of familial interaction. Hence, the concept of nonfamilial intergenerational interaction becomes vital in understanding the overlapping needs of the two user groups while integrating them as a part of the larger community. The project for an “Intergenerational Centre for Seniors and Orphaned Children in Mohali” calls for a new typology of community-based living model for residents and a community centre for their immediate neighbourhood. Such a typology explores the potential to be developed as an inclusive platform for multiple generations, while targeting at the two extreme ends – the young children, and the aged seniors. The project is designed keeping in mind the extremities faced by the user groups at two ends of ageism, isolation, and disconnect. Their needs, while strikingly opposite are catered to in built spaces that provide for accommodability and flexibility. The design is also guided by principles of trauma-informed approach, that combines a salutogenic approach and a human centric approach. A comprehensive design proposal has been made by carefully analyzing existing isolated and intergenerational models, and understanding the user needs, wants, and desires.     Since March 2020 a new discussion around public health and safety, environment and economic activities gained a lot of traction. The novel Corona virus or COVID 19, first reported during the end of 2019, has pushed architects as well as planners to relook at the way we utilise or interact with public spaces. The introduction of Working from Home (WFH), which was never an alien concept, on a national and even global level resulted in a number of positive and negative impacts. Trying times like these and the intertwined chain reactions due to globalisation and urbanisation proved that economic activities at no cost can completely be halted, in which case, people will suffer and so shall the stability of a society or community. Environmental loss was observed to be slowing down due to a sudden halt in anthropogenic and economic activities. Later on, adaptation of alternative approaches emerged proving again that ―Necessity is the mother if all inventions. The unfortunate pandemic puts the topic of the study at an advantage to analyse energy consumption patterns and emission magnitude otherwise which would have been only a speculative simulation at some point in the near future. With the baseline datasets from pre-lockdown, a definite assessment can be drawn to as to quantify the environmental damage expected to be caused by the present functioning Science and Technology Parks (STPs) and CBD areas along with the establishment of new ones in the times ahead. Some of the observations and facts from before shed light on the WFH scenario in terms of emissions and energy consumption. For example, 3.6 million tons of GHGs emissions, annually, can be avoided due to WFH in the US. Telecommuting, one of the most popular ways to conduct business in this modern age, is a part of climate change as it can save 9-14 billion kWH of energy annually. Another data suggests, WFH has potential to reduce crude oil consumption by 640 million barrels and cut emissions by 54 million tons of GHG. According to the research and available information, expansion of WFH half the time would equate to GHG savings worth 10 million cars off the road. Research from 2018, estimates the ICT sector‘s carbon footprint to be 730 Mt CO₂- equivalents or 1.4% of overall global emissions, and the sector uses 800 TWh or 3.6% of the global electricity for its operation (based on 2015 data). Exploring Potential of Working from Home (WFH) for the Reduction of GHG Emissions in Post Pandemic Scenario: A Case of NOIDA One of the major gaps while conducting primary research was that most of the documents published is on the Innovation Results of the firms in the Science & Technology Parks (STPs). Such papers usually discuss the role of different products and services of firms and companies working out of one big facility exponentially increased chances of collaboration, efficient use of resources and profit maximisation without compromising quality or suffering resource loss. While searching for more information on the internet, some links directed to page documents of ―modification‖ and ―expansion‖ of certain IT Hub in India. Those documents were signed under Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). So, as per facts, EIAs are conducted on proposed construction, functioning, expansion or modification of STPs not the emissions released over time. One of the other gaps identified outlines, energy consumption due to essential services and psychological effects of Working from Home cannot be standardised as parameters to quantify consumption patterns arising out of such factors shall always remain an unpredictable variable and would involve interdisciplinary subjects of psychology and sociology. An astonishing fact encountered during the primary survey found that for the commercial buildings, even sharing their annual electricity bill or even the bill generated during the extreme lockdown months is against their data sharing policies. More shocking was the same response received from two firms working within the study area with a clientele from the study area specialising in data collection and analyses of carbon emissions of different businesses. Over the last decade, energy crisis has become grimmer and more urgent to be addressed. Our need to expand infrastructure and other anthropogenic activities has led to consumption of non-renewable natural resources at an accelerated pace. The irony stands in that the technology we are hysterically utilising to grow and prosper is also consuming the limited energy the planet stores for all of us. The research tries to explore the technology-energy nexus through the possibilities of Working from Home while taking an account of GHG emissions with implementation of carbon credit and taxing policies. Exploring Potential of Working from Home (WFH) for the Reduction of GHG Emissions in Post Pandemic Scenario: A Case of NOIDA Narrowing it down after studying the available literature on the theme, the aim was delineated to exploring potential of working from home for reduction of GHG emissions in a post pandemic scenario for the city of NOIDA. To achieve the aim, the literature review helped to breakdown the process into different objectives that would support to gather evidence for the hypothesis of the research, that is, WFH all-round the year is a viable or feasible option to cut Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. To iterate, the objective was majorly to understand the nexus of WFH, GHG emissions and COVID-19 induced lockdown. Understanding the mechanism of each of the three rendered with the understanding of possible and existing dynamics of all combined. This primarily included the literature review, news reports, documents, etc. released by different government bodies, major firms and companies pertaining to their survey findings. Moving on to the second and crucial objective for the thesis research was ―to analyse the climatic profile, land cover and GHG emissions of the study area. The overview of the two has been interlinked to show their relationship with emissions. These analyses were a larger part of the research only for outlining the long-term impacts on the magnitude on emissions and the changes in the climatic profile of the city on a decadal scale. The third objective majorly focuses on the case-based statistics of emissions derived from the primary survey which was ―to assess the GHG emissions from STP buildings and related activities for before and during lockdown phases. The baseline data was already retrieved from the literature review and further through data collection while a survey was conducted online through a Google Form due to COVID-19 restrictions to seek out the energy consumptions related figures that could be linked to emissions. Both, the baseline statistics from before the lockdown and during the lockdown have been compared to substantiate the emissions magnitude. Further, a few scenarios have also been simulated to assess the same for the post pandemic phase. Exploring Potential of Working from Home (WFH) for the Reduction of GHG Emissions in Post Pandemic Scenario: A Case of NOIDA Based on the results of comparative data and simulated data, the fourth objective has been formulated ―to recommend strategies for environmental protection through trade-offs‖ since the energy use pattern, emissions linked to work related transportation, individual companies‘ policies and practices of sustainability varies. Certain proposals are put forward to create a cleaner and congestion free working environment for a rapidly urbanising and economically revolutionising city like NOIDA. The scope has been to develop an understanding of benefits of Working from Home on GHG emissions due to Science & Technology Parks (STPs) on a city‘s environmental profile with the help of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As for the limitations, the research problem does not include the transport related emissions of essential services and mainly focuses of emissions released due to IT sector activities and work-related trips. The air quality related data accuracy is limited around the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB)‘s live monitoring stations. The data collected during the study is confined to the availability of online data due to COVID-19 restrictions, serving as a model for a completely online or virtual primary data collection and survey methodology

    The city has become fragmented with newly built developments which seem like numerous bubbles in the urban fabric, making the built environment more and more exclusive. This has given rise to inequalities and spatial division between different classes leading to the marginalization of people. Informal settlements are one of the most pressing issues confronting urbanization. They cannot be addressed only by severe methods such as demolition and eviction or upgrading through insensitive solutions. Current approaches towards slum redevelopment can be characterized as ‘urban acupuncture. In light of the growing number of people living in informal settlements across the world, it is imperative that their permanent status be acknowledged. The biggest shortcoming of the informal settlements is a lack of non-commercial communal space due to the absence or minimization of public intervention. The research's purpose is to demonstrate the place-making process via the everyday activities of migrants and local ethnic communities in their urban settlements, as well as to investigate the link between this process and the construction of identity in modern urban society. The aim is to investigate By learning about the emergence of these settlements, we may better understand their socio-spatial appropriation, typology and space production trajectories, searching for the advantages and problems of those communities, comprehending them in their context, interdependence, shared infrastructure resources, and being linked to a networked surrounding urban fabric ,that can be the base for an urban upgrading through urban design inserts. The proposition is to connect social and economic values in order to create a strategic spatial framework that can be included into future redevelopment plans. Which would eventually help understand the potential for researching vulnerability to link locals, migrants, and locations, which can lead to more supportive, less disciplinarian types of cooperation in the modern city, through a comprehensive analytical framework in Dharavi based on two settlement colonies: Koliwada (Urban Village), and Seshwadi (Slum). Each has a unique form, historical evolution, and guidelines The design strategy reframes and repurposes the conventional concept of reconstruction in India's informal settlements, potentially expanding to the global south. Most informal settlements in the geographical region of the global south have specific socioeconomic patterns that play an important role in their survival.     There are many cities in the world who have undergone a transition of improving and rebuilding their public transportation systems when planning and redeveloping their cities for a better future. It is during this time that special attention is given to all the necessary public transit stops, where they are pausing and the entire travel experience from the time the passenger boards the public transit to the time, he gets off the transit and it enters into the area of commercial value. This can only be done when the focus is not only the transit but on forming larger urban connections. When someone travels to a place by public transport, the station is the arrival point and the public realm connects the station to the local area. Good public realm supports the transport system, builds the identity of a place, enhances the station as a community asset and supports growth in the local economy. Many cities are adopting Transit Oriented Development (TOD) approach to plan and organize their cities. Dunphy et al. (2004). As TOD effectively looks not only to improve the transit experience but also linking surrounding fabric to the transit station. This binds the entire network of neighborhoods to its nuclei the transit station. Madan Mahal station is the second main railway station in the Jabalpur city. It comes under West Central Railway zone, Many Express and Passenger trains halt in Madan Mahal station. It is located in the most central location of the city and is one of the most important and busiest stations which divided to city into two parts. Numerous reality checks over time proved unsuccessful as the city failed to take drastic measures to improve the transit experience and the areas surrounding the transit stations to accommodate the growing passenger demands. There are various ways of approaching the transport hubs like looking at their potential as catalysts for urban transformation, regeneration of inner cities, economic opportunities and TOD etc. this thesis scope is to explore the role of public realm as a common attribute that would become the qualitative factor and plays a key role in deciding the spatial, visual and experiential quality of transit station precincts. Dealing with transport interchanges demands detailed data related to vehicular, pedestrian and infrastructural data, which are kept as limitations and it is only analyzed to the required extent without completely orienting the study towards transportation issue resolving exercise.     India's magnificent architectural heritage is observable in neighborhoods and cities all around the country, particularly in regions of ancient historic towns that showcase a range of unique characteristics. One of our most valuable cultural treasures is our built heritage. It depicts the historical layers of our built environment, describes our origins, helps us realize who we are, and allows us to keep a connection to the past while also developing a feeling of place and identity for both urban and regional populations. The old historic towns reflect the connection of natural environments and built interventions, traditional knowledge, historical values, and other traits. Built heritage is protected by the community for a variety of reasons, including cultural and social identity, scientific interests, providing a source of knowledge and access to a people's cultural past and customs, historic interests, nationalistic and economic interests, and so on. Historic structures are relics of historical and architectural, ethical, and social progress across time. Due to the growing requirement for development, the current tendency for historic towns conflicts with the underlying fabric of form, urban landscape, and massive infrastructure capacity. The historical values and significance of historic towns have been endangered by the quick pace of urbanization, changing socioeconomic and cultural values, expanding industrialization, and people's associations with their surroundings. Many of the country's heritage towns and cities have been limited to growth pressures, resulting in the rapid deterioration of a conventional pattern of form that has formed over time.. Unfortunately, neglect and inappropriate development are jeopardizing our precious history. Too often, the long-term environmental and cultural consequences for short-term actions are neglected, and we lose a unique piece of our heritage as a result. It is everyone's responsibility to put forth the constant effort necessary to protect our country's cultural landscapes.     The study attempts to identify the social and environmental impacts of floating solar photovoltaics (FSPV) and the implications for sustainability. Energy production has a significant impact on GHG emissions; thus, emerging technologies are helping to shape the world for a more sustainable future. Energy production has always had a significant impact on GHG emissions; thus, emerging technologies will play a crucial role in designing a more prosperous future. As a trend, new technologies are deployed keeping in mind their benefits, disregarding the set laws and consequential environmental concerns. However, as promising as it appears, further research is needed to determine whether FSPV energy production is environmentally friendly and the underlying ecosystem implications. Among countries like Japan, Korea and China, India has been a forerunner in adopting new trends and meeting its 2050 clean energy targets, including clean energy generation by FSPV. With an emphasis on the Indian subcontinent, there is a need to investigate the elements of clean energy generation by FSPV, their implications, future research opportunities and mitigations. Considering the consequential concerns for new technology implementation, the study investigates FSPV as an emerging technology. It identifies the social and environmental impacts and their implications for sustainability. Since the research literature on this theme is relatively new and partially unexplored, the study focuses on the social and environmental benefits and the primary drawbacks of floating PV deployment on water bodies. The primary goal is to analyze the existing literature to fill the research gaps and identify the impact assessment process and the indicators used. The need to evaluate the implications of emerging sustainable technologies through a scientific viewpoint prompted the study to focus on the social and environmental benefits and drawbacks of floating PV deployment on water bodies. Moreover, the research literature is relatively new because of the rapid advancement of technology in both developed and developing countries. The baseline scenario for the Omkareshwar reservoir in 2021 depicts the presence of diverse flora and fauna. As a result, the influence zones are divided into three zones based on primary, secondary, and tertiary impacts. First, any changes in water quality impact the resident's livelihood; hence a water quality evaluation is performed and compared to the standards. The data suggest that calcium and salts, sulphates, cloriforms, and high TDS predominate. Second, the block is rich in flora and wildlife, with 200 distinct avifauna and riverine habitats, including Indian garihyal, Otter, and fishes such as the Indian mahseer. Third, the fisher's fishing prospects are affected due to the change in water quality and the installation of solar panels on the water body. The thesis aims to investigate the socio-environmental impacts of FSPV. It proposes to examine several research pieces done globally thoroughly, and in India, the methodology followed for the assessment and the parameters used. Since countries have different climatic conditions, temperatures and distinct flora and fauna, the goal would be to investigate it in the Indian scenario concerning EIA reports. Switching or increasing solar energy production in FSPV has excellent potential for India because of its location and solar potential. India proposes a 6000MW FSPV setup on the Omkareshwar Dam reservoirs, the second-largest globally, covering a vast water body. It intends to first review various literature on the impacts and impacts assessment methodologies, proposed projects, and the future of FSPV. The literature review will aid in developing an understanding of the weights of impacts, parameters and the tools to assess the effects. Finally, the synopsis aims to conceptualise or improve the existing Indian FSPV, provide a clear understanding of whether the technology is sustainable, and mitigate the negative impacts. The thesis concludes by assessing the effects of place-based indicators and proposing mitigations. Finally, the environmental repercussions that lead to social consequences affecting fishermen's livelihoods are closely examined.     The environmental damage and pollution has been a prevailing topic in recent years which is giving way to various innovations in different aspects that include the transportation sector as well. The alarming pollution rate is an aspect that has to be taken care of with utmost care. By now itself the capital city of India - Delhi has been facing various problems due to the increased pollution rates and have been coming up with different initiatives mainly in the transportation sector to reduce pollution. Forty percent of the total pollution is due to the transportation sector. So in order to reduce this we have to come up with variable methods like electric vehicles, ban of diesel and gas vehicles, developing better motor vehicle pollution norms and the further pollution filters have to be initiated in the vehicles. Among all the possible alternatives, the development of public transport and electrification of vehicles has to be initiated with greater interest. The electric rickshaw has been playing a major role in the transportation sector mainly in the projects that are initiated by the government respectively. The electric rickshaws due to their affordable prices, easy charging, and battery life have been in boom in recent years. The study has been started by analysing the various topics related to pollution and electric vehicles. The study area has been selected which is Nagole metro station, the last mile connectivity analysis has been done. The site boundary has been selected depending on the surveys conducted by analysing the maximum point a last mile is ending. The area inside the site boundary has variable characteristics including open spaces, commercial, mixed use, residential with gated communities. Ten TAZ’s have been delineated based on the number of last miles ending, the characteristics of area, the overall location of a TAZ as well. The further demand is analysed using the last miles ending, trips required, the number of trips an auto can serve, space available for charging station. The number of autos required has been calculated and accordingly the road network in which they travel through has also been proposed which helps in sorted last mile arrival and faster and efficient running of E-rickshaw. During data analysis various activities were noted which were going on in the study area and it helps in deciding the proposal of the thesis. In the analysing different sections were made and activities were marked accordingly. Expected outcome is a proposal for last mile connectivity of metro passengers using electric rickshaws
