    The economic progress of a country, region, or city is largely influenced by industries, which contribute to shape the society and promoting urbanization and modernization. Among these industries, weaving is considered as one of the contributors to the economic development of any region. However, the growth of the weaving industry is not solely dependent on human resources and their skills but is also influenced by other factors such as education, infrastructure, technology, and banking and finance. Unfortunately, the lack of spatial planning strategies in India has hindered the development of weaving clusters in the country. This thesis has focused on the development of Sambalpuri handloom weaving clusters, with a case of the Janata cluster. The study has aimed to analyse the current state of the Sambalpuri handloom weaving industry in Bargarh district, including its production, marketing, and distribution, and to identify the challenges faced by Sambalpuri handloom weavers in the district. The study has also aimed to explore opportunities for growth and development of the industry, including the use of innovative designs, techniques, and materials, and the promotion of traditional handloom weaving techniques and cultural heritage. The study has proposed to facilitate capacity building and skill development programs for Sambalpuri handloom weavers in Janata cluster, and develop policy recommendations and action plans for the development of Sambalpuri handloom weaving clusters in other parts of the region and country. Overall, this thesis has found out insights into the development of sustainable and inclusive handloom weaving ecosystems in India and to promote the growth and competitiveness of the handloom weaving industry in the countr

    Residential campus design for NMDC at Panna

    National Mineral Development Corporation is a Government of India public enterprise being the largest producer of iron ore in India. The Diamond Mining project is handled by NMDC at Majhgawan - Panna from 1971-72. The diamond mine is surrounded by forest area and falls under Panna tiger reserve. Since the commencement of the mining activities a township was developed for the workers and officers engaged in the mining activity. This township is equipped with all necessary facilities like School, Hospital, Guest House, Community center, Library, Gym & Playground. Since past 50 years the condition of the residential units and the rest of the amenities has deteriorated and calls for constant maintenance and repair. Most of the facilities in the campus are also in poor state and do not support the likings and needs of the people living in the campus. Thus, NMDC has come up with a proposal to shift the township near the city and design it according to modern day technology. The new township should consist of total 275 residential units for Officers & Workers, School, Hospital, Library, Community center, Gym, and Playground. The newly designed campus should be in cohesion with nature and the context that the site sits in

    The importance of the green belt is to limit the expansion of urban growth as well as to protect and preserve the ecological land, agricultural land, and natural areas of villages. The necessity of this study arises from the fact that the rapid transformation of green belts in the periphery of Delhi has resulted in losing their identity. The objectives of the study were to analyse the present situation of the green belt, and for this purpose to identify the triggers of village transformation. Mitraon, Issapur and Dhansa villages were selected as case study areas. The issues, problems, and potentials associated with these villages were studied, and the best practices were suggested for sustainable planning and development in the area, which will balance the process of urbanisation and protect the green belt. The parameters chosen to assess transformation are percentage of agricultural land, increase in built-up area and maximum ground coverage of plot area, and the methods for this analysis used are the change detection technique including built-up areas with the use of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. The study recommends the need for an environmental sustainability approach that takes into account the ecological, social, and economic aspects of green belt villages and sustainable development strategies to address the challenges of transformation in the green belt

    Urban riverfront activity centre integrating the art plaza on fitzgerald birdge Pune

    The Fitzgerald bridge is a 156-year old bridge built by the bridge across the Mula-Mutha river in Pune. In 2011, vehicular movement was stopped on this bridge and in 2017, it was converted to an art plaza with the intention of converting the area into a venue for the Annual Art festival of the cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune. But now, the bridge lies in a dilapidated state. Not many events were held and the lack of infrastructure around the bridge did not make the art festival possible. Pune has 3 major rivers, Mula, Mutha and Mula-Mutha confluence flowing for 44km from the centre of the city. Yet, we do not see activities and engagement of the people of Pune with the rivers. The river culture of Pune had deteriorated due to urban development. This thesis aims to resolve these issues by designing an urban riverfront activity centre. For this thesis the following case studies were conducted: Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, Dilli Haat, Delhi, Kala Ghoda Art Distract, Mumbai, Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad. The main aim of this thesis is to improve the river culture and revive the heritage Fitzgerald Bridge by activating the area and creating an urban riverfront activity centre

    The hilly regions in India, which covers around 18% of the land, faced several challenges, including limited access to healthcare facilities, transportation, and markets, resulting in poor economic conditions. The effects of climate change, such as landslides, avalanches, and water shortages, affected the livelihood opportunities harshly. This forced people to migrate to urban areas, leading to the abandonment of villages. The concept of sustainable livelihoods, defined as means of living that can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks while maintaining or enhancing capabilities and assets without depleting natural resources, emerged as a potential solution to address these challenges. The study aimed to assess the livelihoods in rural hilly areas using the DFID's Sustainable Livelihood Framework and proposed strategic measures to enhance their livelihoods’ sustainability. To assess the livelihood condition in hilly regions, this study selected four villages from two-gram panchayats in Sult block of Almora District, Uttarakhand. The selection was based on the villages' ranking in the Mission Antyodaya Ranking 2019, with Maulekh being the highest ranked and Garkot Talla being the lowest ranked. Maulekh GP has only one village while Garkot Talla GP have three villages namely Mayalgaon, Jogyura and Talla Garkot from which a total of 56 samples were collected using the Slovin Sampling formula. Data collection for the study involved the use of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools, focused group discussions, stakeholders' meetings, household surveys, and livelihood surveys conducted in all four villages. A set of 12 qualitative indicators and 13 quantitative indicators were used to assess the five livelihood assets, namely, physical, social, natural, financial, and human assets. The collected data was then analyzed using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method to assign weightages to the indicators and calculate individual index asset values. These values were aggregated to obtain village-wise Livelihood values, which were used to rank the villages and develop a priority matrix. The results showed that Maulekh had the highest score, indicating better livelihood conditions, while the villages of Garkot Talla had relatively poor scores. The index Livelihood Assessment of Rural Hilly Areas by Sustainable Livelihood Framework: A Case of Almora, Uttarakhand iii asset values in these villages were very low and prioritized as highest. Specifically, the physical and social assets had the lowest scores among all the assets. The findings from the analysis were supplemented by interviews conducted on-site to understand the underlying reasons for the identified shortcomings. Based on these findings, the study proposed practical and strategic interventions as suggested in the DFID’s framework. Practical interventions focused on addressing immediate issues, while strategic interventions aimed at addressing long-term challenges over time. By applying the DFID's Sustainable Livelihood Framework and conducting a comprehensive assessment of the livelihoods in hilly regions, this study aimed to provide valuable insights and propose targeted strategies to improve the livelihood conditions of the selected villages.     Cities are dynamic systems that constantly change and evolve over time. Urbanization has led to the expansion of city borders, resulting in the phenomenon of metropolisation, where neighboring urban areas merge to form larger urban regions. This research aims to comprehensively understand the growth of Bhubaneswar, which is transforming into a metropolitan city with a growing population and rapid urbanization. To achieve this, a combination of indicators from various national & international urban development measuring indices, such as the ease of living index, city prosperity index, and multi-dimensional poverty index, were used to assess the city's development. The research focuses on the Bhubaneswar Development Plan Area (BDPA), considered as the city region, to understand the extent of the metropolisation process. Through a multi-dimensional approach, the research evaluates various sectors that have undergone significant transformations. Sectors such as governance show gradual positive increase over the decade, while transportation has witnessed drastic changes. Additionally, the study also reflects the challenges of such rapid urbanization such as the growth of slum population. The findings of this research can be used to make informed decisions for sustainable and inclusive development in Bhubaneswar as it continues to evolve into a metropolis.
