    Impact on logistics cost by adopting decentralized solid waste management

    Rapid urbanization and increase in standard of living provides direct impact on waste generation. Urban local bodies face various challenges in handling their solid waste. Various schemes like Swachh Bharat, Smart cities, and AMRUT, etc. are focusing on improving sanitation and public health. Centralized solid waste management (CSWMS) is a tool majorly used to achieve waste disposal problems. In CSWMS, waste management solutions are provided at one centralized waste management center located at the outskirts of the city where the collected waste is transported and further processed in the form of composting, Refuse Derived Fuel, Bio-CNG etc. Now with Improvement in SWM technologies Decentralized solid waste management (DSWMs) can be an alternative tool to overcome solid waste problem in Indian cities. In DSWMs, waste can be reduced at various levels: - Zonal level, ward level, neighborhood level, Household level etc. waste is collected, transported, and processed in a decentralized manner. DSWMs has potential to segregate and reduce the waste at source, resulting in decrease of transportation cost, associated emissions, intermediate storage expenses, water pollution at waste storage sites and help in creation of opportunities for informal workers. Logistics cost can be reduced by adopting DSWMs tool, which will help the Municipalities efficiently tackle solid waste disposal. Literature studies are carried out in 3 major categories: Research papers, Government schemes and Case Studies. Various Indian cities and organizations are adopting DSWMs tools to reduce the burden of waste with the help of new technologies. Innovative DSWMs action plans can be adopted in phases to replace traditional systems. DSWMs is currently practiced with the help of NGO’s, Private companies, and Government initiatives. The study area selected for this research paper is the Bhopal Municipal Corporation located in Madhya Pradesh (which has been ranked as the number one state in solid waste management in India). Amongst the cities of Madhya Pradesh, Indore has been ranked as the cleanest city, followed by Bhopal as the second cleanest city. Choosing a city with good solid waste management practices is essential for conducting a comparative study of logistics costs in solid waste management. In this study, primary and secondary data have been collected from Bhopal city to develop a centralized cost flow model of the existing system, for each logistics stage of the waste flow. The study involves developing four scenarios of decentralization approach, which includes DSWMs sites at Transfer station Level, Ward level, Neighbourhood level, and Household level. Each scenario is further divided into sub-scenarios based on the percentage of waste treated at the DSWMs site, ranging from 5% to 40%. A detailed cost flow model is developed for each of the above scenarios and sub-scenarios to conduct a comparative analysis of total cost, total expense, time, cost of transportation, and the number of Vehicle kilometres traveled (VKT). The results of the study will help understand the effectiveness of DSWMs in Bhopal and identify what level of decentralization and at what percentage the city can work more efficiently in handling its solid waste disposal

    Eco experience centre Hyderabad

    The city of Hyderabad, Telangana, is experiencing unequal development in terms of infrastructure and population growth. While the city is attempting to increase its green coverage to improve the living standards of its inhabitants, there is a need for a deeper connection with nature beyond just enjoying a theme park. The project's primary objective is to engage people with nature and architecture, creating a learning environment rich in experiences. Located on the banks of the Musi River, adjacent to a Reserved Forest, the site provides ample opportunities for the program to interact with nature and foster a relationship between the built, unbuilt, and users. The project takes inspiration from various case studies, including the National and Regional Museums of Natural History, the Tribal Museum in Bhopal, and Bharat Bhawan. The project also aims to blend in with nature, similar to the Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, through its form and use of materials. The design concept is based on personal connections with nature, specifically at Mayawadi Organic Farms and Auroville, leading to a curation of hands-on engagement with resources and knowledge through experience. The built and unbuilt components maintain their individuality while interacting with each other at different levels of intimacy. The Eco Experience Centre's mission is to raise public awareness of the value of nature and humans' role in preserving it. The design program consists of a Visitor Centre, galleries, workshops on botanical learning, printing, sustainability, and green infrastructure, as well as stone carving and bamboo weaving. The centre also includes forums, labs, an auditorium, and accommodations, providing opportunities for collaborations between artists and experts. Overall, the design concept is to create an immersive learning environment within a museum complex, featuring a vast collection of plants, birds, ecotones, and insects

    This thesis aims to demonstrate the value of fan involvement and how, with the aid of technological advancements, it may affect and alter how sports fans see and participate in the Olympics in 2024. The Olympic Games, which are only known for their constant innovation and pushing the limits of sports and technology, are made up of fans, occasional sports enthusiasts, and less or more sports fanatics who devote a significant amount of time to supporting their favourite athletes and sports. Fan involvement has been given a fresh viewpoint in this digital age. Thus, the significance of digital advancements in fostering fan involvement is discussed. The following question will also be addressed via this thesis in an effort to provide an answer: The Olympic Agenda 2020+5 recognises digitalization as a key trend for the Olympic Movement over the next five years and how it will influence and effect how sports fans can engage with the Olympics Games in 2024, as it was unanimously approved by the IOC at the 127th IOC Session in Monaco on the 8th and 9th of December 2014

    Adityapur is a city that developed around a private industry and now has a population of approximately 16 lakhs with a rising growth rate. The city has attracted migrants from across the country, and most settlements developed community-wise. However, a new CBD has emerged after TISCO to industries that came in neighbouring municipalities. The present study aims to explore the responsiveness of various types of parameters industrial workers consider when making residential location decisions in Adityapur. How urban dwellers choose where to live is the study's main area of attention. The objective is to find out the variables that are significant in residential decision making and estimate the level of influence each of the variables exert on residential decision making. The study analyses these characteristics to understand the location choice of people and formulate the choice between industrial. The approach to housing has shifted from a socialistic approach by TISCO to a capitalistic approach where new smaller industries only provide housing allowances. Limitations in transportation and communication networks suggest residential self-selection. To analyse this, a survey was conducted, and a Discrete Choice Model was used, and further the acquired survey data will be analysed using the Regression model. The study estimates the choice model parameters, which indicate the sensitivities to characteristics like distance, public areas, commercial areas, and pollution, using the choice behaviour data. These parameter estimates show how important the respective components are in relation to one another. The results highlight that accessibility, pollution, and availability of public areas and commercial spaces are significant attributes that influence the residential decision-making process of households in Adityapur Municipal Corporation. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the location choice of workers in Adityapur and highlights the importance of various parameters in influencing their decision-making. The findings can be used to inform policies that address the unique needs and preferences of the Industrial workers and contribute to the ii provision of attractive and competitive locations that will, to an extent, support the objective for more balanced development in Upcoming Industrial Towns

    The integration of energy-efficient approaches in urban development is crucial for sustainable development and reducing the environmental impact of cities. This paper focuses on Firozabad city, aiming to determine the future demand for electricity and identify feasible, environmentally friendly solutions for effective energy use. The study objectives include assessing the variables affecting power usage patterns, estimating future sector-based electricity demand, and developing policies to promote sensible electric energy resource use. The research methodology involves a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature, a survey to collect primary data, and statistical methods to analyze the data. The study finds that population growth, industrialization, and urbanization are the primary drivers of increasing energy demand in Firozabad city. Moreover, the study identifies the potential for renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies to reduce the demand for conventional energy sources and promote sustainable development. To promote sensible energy resource use, the study recommends a set of policies, including promoting renewable energy adoption, promoting energy-efficient building designs, and raising public awareness about energy conservation. These policies would not only reduce energy demand and carbon emissions but also improve the quality of life in the city. The findings of this study provide useful insights for policymakers, city planners, and developers to promote sustainable urban development in Firozabad city and beyond

    The rapid urbanization of developing countries presents a significant challenge in the form of urban poverty. The different aspects of poverty such as access to food, income, shelter with proper sanitation and water supply, healthcare and education resources, social support systems, and more are all interlinked with each other. One such problem is transportation, which determines access to all other facilities. In India, mobility restrictions pose a significant obstacle to the involvement of the low-income population, particularly women who have traditionally played an active role in society. It is widely acknowledged that poverty is not experienced equally among different groups of people, and that factors such as gender, age, caste, class, ethnicity, and household dynamics can influence one's access to income, food security, and life opportunities. Unfortunately, those who are most negatively impacted by these inequitable power relations tend to be women, elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and young girls. When examining the economic activities of those living in poverty in urban areas, many are involved in informal work, with women often occupying the lowest positions in subcontracting arrangements and performing tasks such as home-based piecework and domestic services for very low wages. The present degree of mobility they possess can be considered satisfactory for carrying out their anticipated responsibilities as individuals with low-level skills in their jobs, students attending underprivileged schools, or people who manage households on a full-time basis. However, with the time when a change in their role and responsibilities is required, the limited mobility option restrict their ability to reach those new sites which new activities would demand. Thus, this limits their chance to move out of poverty. The city of Patna has been chosen as a case study to understand how the urban poor, especially women living in slums, with limited financial resources move around within the city. Patna represents the complex interplay of poverty, informal economy, and the displacement and resettlement of people within the city. The study's primary objective is to gain insight into how women belonging to the lower socio-economic strata manage their mobility issues and financial limitations. The focus is on examining the strategies employed by the impoverished to address their transportation needs, given their restricted economic means. Additionally, the study seeks to understand how being a captive rider affects their ability to access new economic opportunities. The research employs a mixed methods strategy, which integrates qualitative narratives from individuals with a quantitative household survey and an examination of secondary documents. The survey findings indicate that a set of social behaviours have emerged as a result of limited access to affordable transportation, and the added responsibility of being the primary caregiver for the family. Women's travel pattern is defined by the movement of care, with women making a greater number of trips associated with care giving work to maintain the household. Furthermore, they often engage in "trip chaining," meaning they frequently travel for various purposes and make multiple stops before reaching their destination. They currently rely on low-energy mobility practices such as walking (72%), and public transportation (10%) and rest by E-rickshaw and shared auto rickshaw. Despite their low environmental impact, these practices are not adequately considered in the city's urban and transport planning. The urban poor face a paradoxical situation where they cannot afford motorized transportation, which accounts for 10-14% of their monthly household income. As a result, they encounter difficulties in accessing improved opportunities due to the unavailability of affordable and reliable transportation services. This thesis attempts to broaden society's understanding of the difficulties faced by impoverished urban women in terms of mobility, and to propose solutions that can enhance their ability to access the emerging economic opportunities

    Community welfare centre for the new victims of Bhopal gas tragedy

    The world’s worst man—made disaster hit Bhopal on the 3rd of December in1984. 42 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked out of the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant affecting about 500,000 people, the consequences of which are being faced till date. People continue to live by the high compound walls and the barbed wires of the dilapidated factory, in an extremely dangerous environment and very limited facilities. However, the needs of these people have changed through the years as they live through the aftermath of the disaster. My thesis draws its proposition from the current problems faced by the surviving community of the Bhopal gas tragedy and their families and is an attempt to spatially manifest a holistic and comprehensive solution in the form of a community center, where people get the recognition and the facilities they deserve, and awareness is spread about the impact the gas tragedy has had over the survivors through the years. Community participation is encouraged at all stages of creating community spaces that would enable recovery, rehabilitation, equitable distribution of resources and generate employment and education opportunities

    Public library for Bhopal Madhya Pradesh

    The Public Library is one of the few institutions that a person can freely access and stay inside for several hours for free and without being questioned and with no demand for a fee. A public library thus provides its environment, in addition to information, as a public service. The architectural design of a public library is thus an extremely important factor in deciding its ability to serve its community. This architectural thesis explores this as an opportunity to design a library that responds to the needs of the local users through its spaces. This is done by first understanding the users, the immediate surroundings, and the context, and then applying these learnings to design user-centric spaces. It also employs critical regionalism as a design approach. The final design is able to provide a solution of a public library built with modular spaces that can be repurposed according to the needed user requirement and can be multiplied and shaped according to the need
