Public participation is a crucial process that involves citizens in decision-making processes aimed at improving or developing their built environment. However, this process faces several challenges, particularly in developing countries, where citizens often lack motivation to participate due to various factors that determine the efficiency of public participation, such as information exchange and citizen involvement. To address these challenges, a study was conducted to identify an effective process for public participation in rural areas of Puducherry, India. It is important to note that Puducherry was chosen as the focus of this study due to its rural setting and the need to address the challenges of public participation in decision-making processes in such areas. The study involved an opinion survey, and respondents were categorized into four groups: planning officers, traditional leaders, youth leaders, and household heads. The study found that ineffective communication, attitude towards participation, and difficulty in attending public participatory meetings due to their locations were critical issues in public participation programs. These factors resulted in insignificant public awareness and understanding to support effective participation. Additionally, ineffective empowerment and contextual impediments such as a lack of public orientation were identified as barriers to the program. The study recommends a framework to improve communication, encourage adequate participation, effective empowerment, and alleviate the impact of impeding factors for effective public participation. The recommendations provided by this study will guide potential practitioners, lawmakers, and academicians in developing effective public participation programs in rural areas of India. This study highlights the importance of understanding the challenges faced by citizens in participating in public decision-making processes and the need for effective communication and empowerment strategies to encourage and facilitate their involvement

This thesis project focuses on the need for adaptive reuse of historical buildings to preserve their cultural and historical significance while providing modern amenities for the community. It specifically explores the case of the Commonwealth Trust Handloom Factory in Kozhikode, which played a significant role in the social and economic development of the region during the British colonial period but is currently under threat from the land mafia. The project proposes repurposing the factory as a cultural and heritage center that promotes local handicrafts and traditional weaving techniques, while providing space for community events and workshops. The project requires collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders, including heritage conservation organizations and weaving communities, to ensure sustainable and inclusive development. The significant features of the project include preserving the authenticity of the structure and its historical significance, empowering local communities, and promoting sustainable tourism and economic development. The project aims to showcase the potential of adaptive reuse as a means of preserving cultural heritage while promoting community development and empowerment

a case study of Sirpur lake, Indore

In recent years, the degradation of freshwater ecosystems has become a major concern worldwide. Urban water bodies play a vital role in providing ecosystem services to society and nature. However, it is most impacted by excessive pollution, increasing infrastructural development, and changes in land use affect it the most. In various cases, it was found that climatic variations are not only affecting the riverine biodiversity but also the humans residing near the catchment area of the lake. Nowadays, wetlands are being recognized as “wastelands” serving as grounds for a variety of waste materials (Khan et al., 2004; Bano et al., 2018). So, the first step for reversing this trend is to create and add value to the urban waterbody. The Sirpur Lake in Indore, India, is one such freshwater ecosystem that is under threat due to various anthropogenic activities in its watershed. This thesis aims to develop a framework for planning interventions in the watershed for the conservation of Sirpur Lake. This study adopts a case study approach and uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data. The data collected includes land use patterns, hydrological data, and socioeconomic information from the watershed of Sirpur Lake. The data is then analyzed to identify the major factors contributing to the degradation of the lake and to suggest interventions to mitigate them. The study finds that the major factors contributing to the degradation of Sirpur Lake are urbanization, agriculture, and industrial activities in the watershed. The increased urbanization in the area has led to the conversion of natural areas into built-up spaces, which has resulted in a decrease in the natural infiltration of rainwater into the ground. This, in turn, has caused an increase in surface runoff, leading to erosion and sedimentation in the lake. Agricultural activities in the watershed have also contributed to the degradation of the lake, as the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has led to the contamination of the lake's water. Finally, residential colonies in the watershed have resulted in the discharge of effluents into the lake, which has led to a decrease in water quality. To mitigate the factors contributing to the degradation of Sirpur Lake, the study suggests various interventions. One such intervention is the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices such as organic farming and the use of natural vi fertilizers and pesticides. The study also proposes the zoning regulation for the development around the lake through the implementation of stricter laws and regulations. Additionally, the creation of green buffers in urban areas can help reduce surface runoff and improve infiltration, thus reducing erosion and sedimentation in the lake. The study also emphasizes the importance of involving the local community in conservation efforts and proposes a participatory approach to the planning and implementation of interventions. This thesis makes a significant contribution to the field of watershed management and conservation by providing a framework for planning interventions in the watershed for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems. The findings of this study can be applied to other freshwater ecosystems facing similar threats in India and elsewhere. It is essential to take a holistic approach to conservation efforts that involve the participation of local communities and stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainabilit

the five cosmic dance halls in Tamil Nadu

Architecture is a discipline that can include various other art forms within its conception, ideology, physical manifestation, and many other possible ways. Bharata’s aesthetic theory states that all art forms are relative and have a firm base in terms of their experience, both manifested and non-manifested. This thesis is an attempt to explore the relationship between performing art and functional art- classical dance and architecture. This relationship is explored with the case of the Panchasabhas or the Five Cosmic Dance Halls in Tamil Nadu. According to the Tamil Shaiva cult, there are five different temples in Tamil Nadu, where it is believed that Lord Shiva has performed His Cosmic Dance in various mythological contexts. These temples are collectively known as Panchasabhai, literally meaning the five cosmic dance halls (Pancha – Five and Sabhai- hall or council in Tamil). The five temples among the Panchasabhai are spread across the state of Tamil Nadu and the structures have evolved over different periods and were patronized by different dynasties. The five sabhas are named after five precious materials such as Ratina sabha (precious stone/ gem), Kanaka sabha (gold), Velli sabha (silver), Thamira sabha (copper), and Chitra sabha (painting). The names are derived from the material with which the idol of Nataraja has been cast in the respective temples to which the sabhas belong. The Panchasabhas are also associated with the five thandavas believed to have been performed by Shiva in these sites. Temples of Tamil Nadu were institutions in which there was a confluence of religion, beliefs, rituals, arts, politics, and architecture. Therefore the thesis primarily attempts to understand the concept of Panchasabha through multiple factors such as social conditions, religion, politics, and architecture. Thereby it establishes the significance of a sabha in the temples in which they are located. The Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam has its roots in the temples of Tamil country, where it was performed as an integral part of the daily and special rituals. Therefore the role and reflection of dance within a temple and its royal patronage are also dealt with to understand its manifestation within the built environment of the temple complex. The thesis is concerned with testing a hypothesis that is based on the inter relationship between two variables of dance and architecture, as manifested in the Panchasabhas or the Five 14 Spatial Manifestation Of Dance In Panchasabha: The Five Cosmic Dance Halls In Tamil Nadu Cosmic Dance Halls in Tamil Nadu. The significance of the sabhas within the Panchasabha temples and their role in contributing towards the integrity of the temple complex has been established as part of the research
