    Climate Change recognized globally as one of the greatest challenges facing society has had and will have various detrimental impacts on both natural as well as man-made systems. One of its significant outcomes is the occurrence of extreme weather events leading to environmental hazards, which though shortterm events, are increasing in frequency and intensity. Cities in developing countries are increasingly facing such hazards, leading to deaths, asset destruction, and uncertainty of urban life. Understanding the link between society and these hazards requires studying how individuals respond to environmental risks. Flooding is a prevalent natural disaster globally and is a frequent event in numerous cities in India and understanding people's behaviour around floods is crucial for developing risk mitigation strategies. Studies have shown that during flood disasters, individuals are less likely to travel in the same way they do during normal times. Mobility is an essential part of human life and is shaped by multiple elements like social characteristics, demographics, and personal perspectives. It is vital to comprehend human mobility patterns in both regular and unusual circumstances to facilitate disaster readiness and management and minimize fatalities and financial losses. Human behaviour in and around floodwater is complex and influenced by a range of factors, including social norms, personal experience, and the perception of risk. Hence, for effective disaster risk reduction initiatives, a better knowledge of human behaviour, particularly linked to mobility in and around floodwater, is crucial. A framework called Mobility as a Response (MaaR) considers factors like risk perception and averting actions. Risk-taking behaviour and evacuation behaviour play significant roles and may differ by gender and age, income and so on. However, in majority of existing studies as well as disaster management plans the decision-making process and coping behaviour are not fully explored and they lack to address risk mitigation from a perspective that a smarter resilience response requires a better understanding of human behaviour, activity patterns, needs, and reactions to disasters and to intervene accordingly. iii iv This study, therefore, aims to recommend strategies to enable safer human mobility during urban flooding events through a study of individual travel behaviour. It aims to accomplish the following objectives: examining the travel patterns and behaviours of individuals when faced with urban flooding, understanding how individuals perceive and respond to risks during such events, and proposing interventions that effectively reduce disaster risks and facilitate safer human mobility during urban floods. The research has been carried out as a quantitative study, wherein 101 individuals have been surveyed from the selected study area, which is one of the worst floods affected areas in Guwahati city, to analyse changes in their travel behaviour under flooded conditions as well as their willingness to take risks or avert them during floods. A focus has been put on gathering and analysing the perceptions of the individuals on different aspects classified under the categories of: BuiltEnvironment and Transport Related Perceptions, Perceived Behavioural Control, Information-seeking and social norm, Information-seeking and social norm and Risk taking behaviour during floods. Conclusively, this research focuses on understanding the dynamics of human mobility during urban flooding events. The factors influencing individual decisionmaking processes, the effectiveness of evacuation strategies, and the development of resilient transportation systems to ensure safe and efficient movement during flooding events have been investigated. By employing statistical data analysis, and incorporating socio-economic aspects, evidence-based strategies and policies that enhance human mobility and reduce vulnerability in urban areas prone to flooding have further been developed as an outcome of the study

    The "Smell and Experience: Design through Exploration" project is an exploratory research initiative aimed at exploring the role of olfactory design in enhancing user experience. Designers focus on using lines, colors, and textures to give ideas form, but they need to consider how things smell. This project explores how the sense of smell can be brought into the design to enhance the experience and will study multi-sensory experiences where the smell is a sense. Design by Exploration is a design methodology that emphasizes the role of experimentation and exploration in the design process. This approach allows a more open-ended, iterative, and flexible design process to try different ideas and methods instead of following a fixed plan. One of the project's key objectives is to investigate how smell can create immersive experiences that evoke emotions, memories, and associations. By exploring the relationship between scent, memory, and experience, the project aims to provide a deeper understanding of how designers can create experiences that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally meaningful

    Case of BRTS Bhopal

    In India, nearly one-third of the total population lives in urban areas. Urbanisation has increased from 31.28% to 35.39% since 2011, indicating public transport demand in urban areas. Out of the available options of public transport modal choice, transit service conditions are dependent on various factors. In the case of public transport services, the introduction of new mass transit systems and unconventional situations (like the COVID-19 era), are creating challenges to existing city bus services in urban India. Bhopal, one of the metropolitan and state capital in central India was successfully a running bus rapid transit system (BRTS) for the last decade but proposed the metro rail system and changing land use and city functions under its influence will challenge the sustenance and future role of BRTS in Bhopal city. The aim of this study is to foresee the role of BRTS Bhopal in the coming years as phase I of the metro will be functional by 2026. As the current metro alignment is parallel to the major BRTS routes hence, it is expected that the current BRTS ridership may shift to the metro and the relevance of existing city bus infrastructure will face serious threat. Factors that affect ridership can be categorised as travel attributes of a city, user’s attributes of the individuals, service quality and operational attributes of the buses. A study suggests that bus ridership may be associated with changes in bus service and neighbourhood characteristics. Age, Gender, Income, Occupation, and Education level are socio-economic user attributes that affect bus usage which is discussed in many research papers. Service attributes define the user satisfaction for using a service such as cleanliness etc. and travel attributes such as trip purpose, trip distance, etc. The analysis is done through multinomial logistic regression for user’s and travel attributes, percentage change for service quality attributes, and linear regression for the operational factors. Significant factors are used to compare study areas with other cities having metro. It was found that people may shift from bus to metro in different scenarios based on their convenience, affordability, and other operational reasons. The 3 scenarios are built assuming the shift on the overlapping routes. Recommendations on bus route rationalization, route lengths, and fleet augmentation are given and the priority areas for the routes are identified using PTAL (existing and predicted 2026). This study suggests when to augment the fleet and route length of the bus network in Indian cities. It is demonstrated by taking the example of Metro Phase I and BRTS of Bhopal

    Factor affecting women safety and their mobility pattern in last mile, around metro station

    Women often feel unsafe and anxious during their first and last mile of commute. In most cities of India, women do not have access to private vehicles, even if their families own one. Not only in India but globally women use public transport in larger numbers than men. Therefore, it is imperative for the last-mile connectivity as well as public transportation to be safe for them to commute. In this research, the focus would be primarily on last-mile connectivity. The travel patterns of women are immensely different from men because of the social roles assigned to them. Women spend a higher proportion of their time in caring-related activities. Due to this, they are more prone to trip-chain. Women typically make numerous trips every day by public transport as well as on foot, to transport children, and elderly family members, and to conduct household chores. As a result, their travel needs are much more complicated and diverse. During this complex commute, their safety becomes a major concern as women's safety affects their access to professional and social opportunities. In this study, the aim is to identify and study the factors that affect women’s safety in the stretches around metro stations of Delhi; to map the presence of such factors around metro stations, and to assess the impact of those factors on their safety as well as their travel choices/ mobility pattern. The study utilizes Multinomial logistic regression as a quantitative/ statistical tool for modelling, in order to assess how safety increases or decreases when the identified factors are altered as well as geospatial tools for the analysis. Finally, a few interventions or recommendations are proposed for reducing the vulnerability around metro stations. The most influencing factors were identified to be lighting, visibility (eyes on the street), availability of para-transit, surveillance, footpath availability, crowd density, and use of alcohol/drugs in the vicinity. Based on the analysis of this research, the recommendations were categorised into six major components i.e., land-use and street activity, accessibility, infrastructure, feeder services, public policy, and enforcement & grievance system. Further, study area-specific interventions have also been proposed which detail out typical street sections that can be replicated in the city to improve safety conditions

    Malhar is one of the ancient towns situated in Masturi tehsil of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh. It was one of the important towns in Dakshin Kosala region. The ancient town of Malhar is surrounded by three rivers Lilagar river on the east, Arpa River on the west and Shivnath river on the south. In one of the Kalchuri inscriptions, this town is mentioned as Mallalapatana (referring to the town situated near river or any other water body). Hence, the geographical location of the town justifies its name as Mallalapatana or Mallapatanam. In addition to the primary group of Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist temple ruins, there is currently a tiny town with some remnants of an ancient fort, two repaired Shiva temples, one museum, and remnants of some older buildings. Archaeological remains from Malhar reveal the early history of the region, with Maurya, Gupta, Vakataka, Sharabhpuriyas, Somvanshi, Panduvamsi and Kalchuri being some of the important dynasties that ruled the region. Malhar has also yielded many numismatic evidences from various excavations with a special symbol representing the town name which also tells that Malhar was located on the trade route. Historic towns serve as a symbol of a community's history, culture, and civilization. They preserve a feeling of place, and serve as a vital architectural and scientific resource. They also serve as a reminder of history and memory, promote a sense of belonging among neighbours, and support growth. Therefore, preserving such locations will help in the development of the town while preserving the significance of the place. Malhar holds immense historical and cultural significance, yet its identity has been eroded over time. This study aims to identify, preserve, and depict Malhar's historical and cultural value. This paper addresses each of these important issues. The study focuses on the mapping of present heritage of the town in terms of built, natural and archaeological features. In order to identify the current management issues, challenges, and potential threats that the town is facing, an attempt has been made, to provide a comprehensive study of the historic town Malhar thorough analysis of the historical background, its geography, its architecture, and its existing cultural resources. The present issues related to the town includes loss of original iii fabric due to the alteration or demolitions, lesser awareness about the heritage amongst the people of the town and government policies lacking awareness related to heritage. Through a comprehensive research approach that includes archival analysis, archaeological investigations, and community engagement, this study sheds light on Malhar's past and contributes to its re-identification. As a part of this research a heritage conservation strategy is developed for the historic town of Malhar. These strategies would enhance the physical aspects that are unique to the place and liability of the people. Furthermore, this thesis contributes to the fields of history, archaeology, and regional studies by highlighting the importance of preserving and reviving the identities of lesser-known historic town

The journey of coming to terms with this lifelong condition and learning to manage its various aspects can be overwhelming. Additionally, involving friends and family in this process can often lead to further complications. Research has shown that a significant percentage of individuals with diabetes experience moderate to severe levels of depression, anxiety, or both. Furthermore, the adoption of existing digital diabetes management tools remains low, despite the emergence of numerous solutions in recent years. Many current tools prioritize technology and clinician perspectives, neglecting the patient's needs and the relationship they have with their condition. This thesis will delve into the complexities of living with diabetes and its effects on mental health. It will explore the limitations of existing digital management tools and propose a human-centered design approach that empowers patients and enhances their overall well-being. By prioritizing the patient's perspective and incorporating their insights into the design process, I aim to create more inclusive and impactful digital solutions for diabetes management

    Built heritage has a very distinctive cultural and aesthetic aspect embedded into it, and conservation has been concentrating on that part very religiously. India has a very rich and diverse cultural heritage, and when studying from one built form to another, it can be observed that each plan and architectural form has a very close association with the purpose it was built for. The use of daylight in these structures is very well documented and studied as these are dependent on the openings and orientation of the structure, and by documenting the structure, the light character of the structure is somewhat getting documented. The acoustics of the structure are a hidden character of a structure and especially for a place of worship and performance. It's the behavior of sound in different environments. It needs special attention and needs to be addressed subjectively. The acoustics of places for worship and performance need to be documented, and the effect of each form and architectural element should be studied. The preservation of historic buildings has an impact on their acoustics. For example, uniform use of materials and building techniques can change the acoustic properties of a building. The heritage structure with signs of acoustic characters should be documented using acoustical instruments, and a simulation of the space should be done to understand the original setting of that structure. Software that can be used for this virtual simulation is ODEON or EASE 4.3, and the instrument package required for documentation of sound is the multidirectional sound source and handheld analyzer

    The overall theme of this thesis revolves around understanding and facilitating safe independent mobility for children. The focus of the study is specifically on safety concerns related to the motorized transportation environment, where safety is defined by factors that determine the risk of a child being involved in a motor-vehicle accident while traveling on urban roads. The purpose of this study is to measure and evaluate safe independent mobility for children using various parameters. The aim is to develop a framework that can be utilized by planning departments and local authorities. Conducting the analysis at a small geographic scale enables the assessment of the variability in safe independent mobility within the study area. The findings can then be utilized to create a decision support tool that assists in planning personalized routes for children in similar urban environments. Currently, there is a lack of theoretical understanding regarding the concept of safe independent mobility for children as a planning layer that can guide neighborhood planning in cities. To address this gap, an interdisciplinary review of guidelines, international/national case studies, and relevant literature was conducted. Subsequently, focus group discussions were held within the neighborhood to propose a new three-dimensional construct based on children's behavior and their built environment. This construct serves as the foundation for understanding safe independent mobility for children from their own perspective. The three parameters identified in this construct are further assessed using various sub-parameters. To validate and expand upon this conceptual framework, an in-depth analytical study was conducted in a neighborhood in Hubli, India, specifically focusing on children in their middle childhood phase (aged 6-18 years). The research methodology involved both qualitative and quantitative analysis, including the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process to determine the weights of each parameter. Additionally, the study aims to address specific issues within the neighborhood through targeted interventions. By combining theoretical insights, empirical data, and practical interventions, the thesis seeks to contribute to the development of ABSTRACT effective strategies and approaches for enhancing safe independent mobility for children in urban environments
