A growing proportion of privately owned vehicles in major metropolitanareasaggravate a number of issues, including traffic congestion and pollution. Over thepast years, congestion has not only increased but has become more volatileinnature. Vehicular emissions contribute to highest percentage of emissions in thetransport sector and jamming of vehicles during congestion increases the fuel consumptionand emissions. Congestion along with increasing the travel time, decreasesproductivity and affects the economy of the city. To reduce the dependencyonprivate vehicles there is need to promote public transport and improve thepublictransport systems. A shift towards public modes of transportation will helptocurbcongestion but there is an associated inertia effect in shifting to public transport. Despite good accessibility to public transport people don’t prefer to shift toit. Theinertia here refers to the inability to shift to public transport. Several studies havealsofocused on inducing a behavioral change in the modal choice of commutersandconvincing them to shift to public modes of transport. This thesis aims to identify the reasons of reluctance in shifting to public transport among the residents of Chennai. This research answers two questions that are: (i)What are the factors inducing a shift from public to private modes of tr ansport whenthere is high public transport accessibility levels? (ii) What is the effect of inertiaondifferent modes of transport?. The accessibility levels of public transport inthestudyarea was established using the London’s Public Transport Accessibility Level (PTAL)methodology. To identify the reasons of the inertia effect the travel behavior andthefactors affecting the modal choice of commuters were studied. The reasonforreluctance to public transport was identified through the revealed preference(RP)survey. The survey was conducted across five locations in municipal corporationwithhigh public transport accessibility levels. Random sampling survey of 325residentswas collected in the study area across five locations to analyse their travel patterns. Discrete choice modelling was used to study the travel behavior. The Multinomial logistic regression (MNL) analysis was done to identify the most affectingvariablesthat influence the modal choice of commuters and establish the inertia effectsof eachmode. One way - Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was further done to identifythevariation between the most affecting variables across different locations choseninthestudy. 8This research focused to identify the most affecting variables of mode choicealongwith assessing the level of service of public transport. The major finding of thestudywere, the variables such as location of residence, and vehicle ownership, income, triplength were the most influencing variables in modal choice of commuters. Theresultsof ANOVA revealed the variation of travel expense between the core city andthesuburbs. The analysis of the study was further used to develop a demandbasedtransit model to provide doorstep services and enhance the efficiency of publictransport. Along with improving the level of service of conventional public transport systems there is a need to include modern ways to make public transport attractive, reliable, make information readily available and provide a hassle free experience. Policy measures can also be used to induce a behavioral change by encouragingpeople to use public transport and shift from private to public transport

Moradabad is a major Industrial city and export hub. Its brass industry accounts for more than 40% of total handicrafts exports from India. The city cannot function without the industry and the industry cannot exist without the city. The thesis would focus on two aspects. The first one would be the study of Moradabad as a city which would focus on identifying the historic structures of the old city. The second one would be Moradabad as an Industrial city which would focus on identifying all the areas where brass items are being made by following the traditional method. This aspect would also focus on documenting the houses where they make brass items, the tools they use, and the evolution of the brass industry over the years. After studying both the layers, the thesis would also try and find the connection between the brass industry and the historic city. There are many religious buildings in the city which have elements like shikhara/doors/bells/windows made from brass. This would help understand how Moradabad is different than any other city. Artisans from the major backbone of the city. The conditions in which they are working has a direct implication on their health. After doing the spatial analysis of the ‘karkhanas’, the thesis would aim to study these issues and give design solutions/ proposals for the same

Cargo transportation by rail for long distances has always been promoted as it is more economically and environmentally sustainable than Road transport. Rail is a guided mode of transportation, so one of the major challenges for the transportation of parcels by rail is last or first-mile connectivity to the Railway station or Parcel office. For the first and last leg of cargo delivery, rail is dependent on road transportation as it is more flexible and convenient for door-to-door delivery. This study aims to understand and plan for sustainable first/ last mile delivery of Rail parcels. The objectives are to study the existing scenario of the first and last leg of Rail parcel distribution; identify the relevant parameters from the literature; analyze its operational characteristics, cost, delays, & impact on the environment and further suggest alternative strategies for sustainable and seamless door-todoor distribution of cargo through intercity Rail. The methodology adopted to achieve these objectives includes a pilot survey and understanding of the Rail parcel delivery process followed by a literature review to identify parameters. Broadly the parameters identified are 1) Freight Demand and Handling 2) Distribution 3) Cost Estimation 4) Emission Estimation. These parameters are further divided into sub-parameters. Based on the identified parameters, primary and secondary data was collected which includes on-site Truck Drivers, Establishments, and Rail cargo agent interviews with the Traffic volume count on stations. On the basis of the data collected, the study analyzed the volume of parcel-carrying vehicles and identified the more preferred vehicle type and their average trip lengths along with the demand regions of the city. Further, delays, total emissions, and generalized transportation costs are estimated and the factors affecting the cost are analyzed. From the on-field survey at 5 major railway stations, it has been found that rail parcels are majorly transported by LCVs having gross vehicle weight < 3.5 T and 22% of the parcels through non-motorized cargo transport. LCVs are under-utilized while NMTs are over-utilized in terms of capacity utilization. Commodities are transported from some important wholesale markets and mandis. Transportation of parcels increases the freight movement on the roads of the city accounting for 1985 MT annual C02 emissions from CNG Light commercial vehicles and faces an average of 4-40 minutes of delay in reaching the Parcel collection hub. On the other hand, the cost of transporting a parcel by rail costs around 0.01 – 0.003 Rs./kg-km for 50 – 1000 km whereas the first/ last leg of the delivery costs much higher. On the basis of inferences, the study recommends the modification in the existing fleet – the use of BEVs with higher payload capacity and lower cost of ownership of vehicles. Other measures suggested by the study are load optimization, reduction in dead mileage trips, and scheduled delivery times using a mobile application-based system. Further, some recommendations are suggested for the action plan of the Rail operating organization. This can provide seamless first/ last mile delivery of rail parcels making it more reliable for the users which can increase the demand, thus increasing the revenue. This study can be taken ahead looking for more automation-based solutions. The methodology adopted can help academicians and researchers in targeting a particular set of strategies finding economical, environment-friendly, and safer options not only for the first/ last mile of Rail parcels but also for other last-mile deliveries of other activities

With the onset of 2025, the India’s logistics market is expected to expand at an annual compounded growth rate of 8% reaching 330 billion US Dollars. (Redseer, 2022). The exponential growth of e-commerce has led to a significant increase in logistical supply, resulting in heightened road congestion and environmental pollution. This thesis focuses on assessing the feasibility of utilizing Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) as an ternative mode of transportation for e-logistics, with a specific case study of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Line (DAMEPL). The research begins by analysing the current scenario of the logistics industry and the challenges it faces in terms of road congestion, time efficiency, cost and environmental impact. Additionally, it examines the existing metro rail system in Delhi, particularly the DAMEPL, and evaluates its efficiency and potential as an alternative for e-logistics operations. Through an in-depth analysis, the study identifies the problems and drawbacks associated with the current logistics system and the DAMEPL. Factors such as operational limitations and space constraints are thoroughly examined. The research proposes the integration of MRTS as an alternative for logistics, highlighting the advantages and potential solutions it offers. It explores the feasibility of implementing MRTS for e-logistics by considering key factors such as cost, time efficiency, and carbon dioxide emissions. Comparative assessments between traditional logistics and MRTS-based operations are conducted to determine the potential benefits and drawbacks. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the viability and advantages of adopting MRTS as an alternative for e-logistics operations, pecifically within the context of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Line. The results contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient logistics strategies, aiming to mitigate road congestion, reduce pollution, and enhance overall supply chain performance

The national capital territory of Delhi witnesses heavy migration as a large population from neighboring towns and villages moves to the national capital in the hope of finding jobs. Unable to afford any space for residence within the city, migrants then tend to settle down in the suburbs, thereby constituting an urban sprawl. Demographically, this population is a mix of people from a variety of backgrounds who do not share a common skill set. Rather, they tend to engage in daily wage labor, construction work, house-help, rag-picking, maintenance, and cleaning jobs as casual workers. The informal nature of work and economy translates to an environment devoid of social security, contributing to unemployment and underemployment in the national capital. In attempts to curb the issues relating to unemployment, and further economic growth, the government in recent years has turned to promote MSMEs in the country. MSMEs, short for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, were first introduced by the Government of India in agreement with the MSMED (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development) Act of 2006. (M/o Micro, small and medium enterprises, 2020). As per the act, MSMEs are the enterprises involved in the processing, production, and preservation of goods and commodities. Make in India, 2014, and Pradhanmantri Rozgar Yojana, 2022 are recent initiatives by the government that seek to boost self-employment and entrepreneurship in the country while generating more employment across all levels of production and sales. A key component of both initiatives is the development of MSMEs and the infrastructure surrounding them. Following the same, many projects have been projects proposed by the government since. In 2021, the Delhi government, DSIIDC, and DDA initiated the development of Industrial parks in the suburban areas, considering the potential workforce available in the said zones. This thesis intends to pursue one such proposal, that is, Manufacturing Hub at Ranikhera, Delhi and develop a design proposal for the same following a bottom-up approach
