    Assessment of parking policy in the case of tire II city

    Unprecedented development in India is not limited to tier I cities. Recent data reveals tier II and tier III cities are also being developed at a rapid rate. This development is linked with increase in urban population; as per a 2018 World Bank report. Increase in the population is associated with increase in vehicle ownership; which is associated with a greater number of vehicles on the roads. Considering this increase the rate of development of transport infrastructure is lower in tier II and tier III cities in India. Therefore, problems like traffic congestion, unorganized parking, pollution, pedestrian safety concerns are growing. Due to the rise in the number of private vehicles on the road, parking has become a vital consideration when creating management and policy plans for transportation in cities. A study carried out in Aurangabad, Maharashtra for understanding the Parking Characteristics and to quantify the adherence to the parking policy and guidelines. Parking surveys have been executed at six locations throughout the city, typically at commercial and mixed-use areas. The characteristics of on-street and off-street parking were examined in context of parking statistics, such as parking accumulation, parking occupancy, parking load, average parking duration, parking index or parking efficiency. Some areas, even after having sufficient parking capacity suffered from congestion because of improper management and lack of availability of required signages, bays marking and other smart parking techniques. For quantifying the adherence towards the parking policy regulations method of “Parking Performance Indexing (PPI)” or “Level of Service” is used. The terms PPI defines the service quality of any parking facility. Evaluation of the parking facility is required to determine how successfully a parking lot manages overall demand, how parking-friendly it is, and what kind of improvements are required to enhance service quality. This study emphasizes on development of methodology to assess performance of onstreet and off-street parking in urban areas from user’s as well as management agencies perspective. The focus of this study is on choosing an appropriate method or technique to measure Parking Area Level of Service from user’s perspective, in order to evaluate the quality of the parking area operating in the Indian setting. Parking costs, search time, walking distance to destination, and demand/capacity ratio have all been taken into consideration as basic quantitative criteria and Perception towards Safety & Security as qualitative parameter for determining service level. K-means clustering and other clustering techniques have been employed in the study to define the PLOS criteria for all five criteria. In addition, a single value index called parking performance index has been calculated which combines all the considered parameters into single value by using Min-Max Normalization process. For calculating PLOS for management agency’s perspective, the existing criteria given by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in 2010 will be used for on-street parking. For offstreet parking PLOS will be defined by calculating the Parking Index according to IIT Bombay document. It is observed that the parking search time and walk time to destination are directly related to the demand by capacity ratio. So, parking occupancy possess highest relative importance among the selected indicators. This study will help in giving suggestions to improve and enhance the existing parking policy to improve service quality of parking

    Braj being a cultural landscape associated with Lord Krishna has been an important center for various folk traditions. Like art, music, architecture, sculpture, etc. since ancient times. The name of folk hero Sri Krishna indelibly brings to mind the clusters of creepers and the bank of the Yamuna River in his playground, the sacred land of Braj. The string of artistic and cultural jewels of Braj emerged from this very same sanctified -pervading presence .The different constituents of art, including various kinds of music, dance, literature, and visual art, do however not exist in isolation from each other but come to live in a homogenous synthesis In 16th CE Braj became home to various cultural traditions and art forms. One such art form was Sanjhi. It had its root in the sacred texts related to the pastimes of the Radha & Krishna. Braj Region has creative Tulsi Bead Mala, Basuri Making, Pottery Making, Poshak Making, which became more significant after the tourism development in Vrindavan. This thesis proposes a center of living traditions to increase tourism-related benefits for local communities in the form of exhibition and public spaces along with skill development center to promote growth and innovative ways.The main objective is to highlight the creative industries existing in Vrindavan and to use it as driver to attract more visitors and retain them for a longer duration

    Out of 10 shopping malls in Delhi, only 2 are successful. There are many reasons behind this. The mall’s design was first made in 1956 by Victor Gruen, where he laid out the concept of a ‘shopping mall’. The concept of the shopping mall has remained unchanged, contrary to consumer’s nature. Since the advent of internet and online shopping, shopping malls did not just serve shopping. The various kinds of attractions provided in a shopping mall make it a recreational space also, where people like to come and spend time. Consumer nature also changes with culture, where on the contrary we have been building similar kinds of malls throughout the globe. For example, a consumer in India is accustomed to shopping ad-hoc. Visual barriers and partitions can certainly become intimidating to some degree. The aim of the project is to solve such problems and to come up with a solution which adheres to the context, climate, feasibility, and service aspects along with catering to the dynamic nature of consumers

    Redevelopment of Jaipur railway station

    The railway industry has been a reliable service provider in India for over a century, playing a significant role in connecting people across the country and enabling it to compete effectively in the global market. Even today, rail transportation remains the most cost-effective and practical means of transportation within cities. However, as cities and urban areas have developed, railway stations have not been designed with sustainability or future needs in mind, and they are still perceived as dirty and overcrowded places simply to board trains. Railway stations represent an untapped resource in the Indian economy, with the potential to generate revenue and act as catalysts for the development of surrounding areas. This thesis seeks to redevelop the existing Jaipur Railway Station into a modern station, integrating all the transportation systems in the area through a place-node development model. The aim is to create a gateway into the city, serving as a third place that combines transit and the city, while minimizing environmental impact and generating dialogue with the surrounding city. The Ministry of Railways has recommended a major redevelopment / upgrade of Jaipur Railway Station. The Ministry of Railways has tasked Rail Land Development Authority with carrying out the project of Major Upgradation of Jaipur Railway Station

    The Paris Agreement marked a milestone as all 196 member states committed to addressing global warming and finding solutions. In 2015, climate change concerns led to a push for action in the electric mobility sector within the framework of the agreement. However, some countries have not witnessed substantial growth in the sector, leading to discussions on whether electric vehicles or supporting infrastructure should take precedence. This raises questions about the prioritization of EV charging infrastructure. In contrast, countries like Norway, the United States, and China are witnessing the deployment of EV charging infrastructure alongside the increasing sales of electric vehicles. An electric car charging network is a charging station infrastructure system that is dedicated electrical infrastructure at various levels of the distribution grid. But why does India need to prioritize the deployment of EV charging infrastructure? India has approximately 1.3 million EVs, with 73% of them being 2w and E-Rickshaws, and the remaining 27% requiring high power charging stations, the majority of which are public (1,742 public charging stations). According to independent research conducted by the CEEW Centre for Energy Finance (CEEWCEF), the Indian EV market will be worth US$206 billion by 2030 provided India continues consistent progress towards its ambitious 2030 target. India faces a huge challenge due to its rapidly growing population; the next few decades will see the electrification of the transportation system occupied with electric vehicles in the road transportation sector, and the government will only focus on EV sales until 2030, with sales of 2W increasing tenfold by 2021. There are 295 million automobiles in India, with electrification expected to reach 28% in 2030 and 35% in 2040. India must prepare to meet the challenge of electrifying transport by providing the necessary infrastructure and power generation. The installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations is a critical component in the transition to a more environmentally friendly transportation system. This thesis investigates the current state of EV charging infrastructure implementation, as well as the associated difficulties and prospects. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative data, as well as case studies of successful EV charging station implementations in various circumstances. The thesis begins by examining the existing state of global EV charging infrastructure, examining the various types of charging stations, their technical specifications, and the regulatory and administrative frameworks that control their deployment. It then looks at the major problems and barriers to v widespread deployment of EV charging infrastructure, such as high upfront costs, the need for standardization, and a lack of clear economic models. The paper then examines successful case studies of EV charging station deployments in various contexts. It investigates the tactics and approaches employed in these case studies, such as public-private partnerships, novel finance structures, and community participation programs. Finally, the thesis makes recommendations to governments, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders in order to speed up the deployment of EV charging infrastructure. These include the need for more supportive policies and regulations, increased public-private partnerships, and increased investment in R&D to improve charging station technology and lower costs. Overall, this thesis emphasizes the significance of EV charging infrastructure deployment in the transition to a more sustainable transportation system, as well as insights and recommendations for stakeholders wishing to speed the deployment of this infrastructure

    As the world advances towards urbanisation, the water resources to cater to the growing population and their sprawling needs are falling short. The shortage is certainly not due to the natural availability, but due to the reckless use and misuse of this limited resource and the human intervention which are causing disturbance in the natural hydrological cycles leading to the depletion of water resources. With more than half of the world’s ever-growing population and 36% of total freshwater water resources, Asia is expected to face severe water scarcity by 2025 (UN News Centre, 2009). India, among this trend with 18% of the world’s population and just 4% of total freshwater resources is struggling severely to cater to the water-related needs of its people, and it is even estimated that by 2030 around 40% of the Indian population will have no access to potable water. Moreover, the country’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply by 2030 which will eventually cause India to become one of the most water-stressed countries in the world (NITI Aayog). Such alarming trends and the related concerns hold planners, environmentalists, policymakers, and the users responsible for effectively managing the water resources and its growing demand. There are certain indicators for calculating water consumption. One such indicator is the water footprint, a multi-dimensional indicator, that measures the volume of freshwater consumed within a region which can be as large as a nation or as small as even a household or it can be calculated for an individual as well. Previous studies show that India along with China and US are among the largest contributors to the total water footprint (38%) generated globally, and the three major sectors that constitute the total freshwater withdrawal and consumption are the agricultural (70%), industrial (19%), and the domestic (11%) sector. Since, the domestic sector uses a significant proportion of available freshwater resources but the past studies have focussed less on exploring the factors behind the increasing water footprint at the household level, therefore there arises a need to identify the variables that influence the domestic water consumption and the resulting water footprint of the households to serve the aim of this study. v Noida lying in the state of Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi is selected as the study area which is growing at a rapid pace to provide world-class amenities and infrastructure to its people, and to accommodate the growing population in the city for which the plotted or detached housing layouts are gradually replaced by high-rise and high-density developments. This adds a new perspective to the study by understanding the water consumption patterns in the selected sites with different housing typologies within the study area. The selection of suitable sites for this study is based on criteria that define the scale of this study, have diversity in collected data samples, accessibility to the survey locations, and the ease of conducting primary surveys. Data collection and analysis are the two critical stages in achieving the objectives of this study. For data collection, primary surveys including household surveys and personal interviews were conducted in the selected localities to gather data for the calculation of the water footprint of households. Thereafter, the data analysis was carried for identifying the influencing variables and analysing their impact on the water footprint of households using statistical analysis tests like two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S Test), one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and regression test on the collected samples. Further, the results of this study were utilized to suggest policy recommendations and conceptual proposals at the household level to mitigate high water consumption due to wastage and overexploitation of freshwater resources, and certain planning measures that can be implemented within the localities to conserve water at the cluster or neighbourhood level

    Heritage buildings have undergone various transformations, including reuse, destruction, reconstruction, abandonment, loss, and restoration. In this dynamic process, the purpose and function of a building constantly shift, often accompanied by additions and alterations that can have positive or negative effects on the structure. Chanderi, a town renowned for its silk weaving, rich history, and architectural heritage, is home to numerous buildings with immense potential for beneficial use. In order for these buildings to survive and thrive, it is essential to develop economically viable plans for their preservation and adaptive reuse. Chanderi boasts a unique architectural style that harmoniously blends indigenous and provincial techniques, resulting in a distinctive historic fabric that characterizes the town. The thesis on Adaptive reuse of historical buildings of Chanderi between 17th and 18th AD: A case of Purani Taksal is a study about the five buildings in Chanderi which have no use and in past have been reused as public buildings. These building are old and historic but there is no data about the past use and its history. These buildings do share commonalities in various architectural aspects. The objective of thesis is to study the historical buildings in Chanderi with a specific focus on the Purani Taksal building, proposing its adaptive reuse as a pilot project. The three buildings located in Katra Bazar which is adjoining Sadar bazar, are stone buildings around which were used as public buildings (purane daftar) for some time and were insensitively altered according to the new function, and in present times these heritage buildings in the vicinity are in a condition of decay and not maintained and not put to any economic use. There is no regard for them, putting building to not suitable to use and waiting for them to die is the concern that needs to be addressed by the town. This process of identifying a new function for a building through the exploration of various adaptive reuse approaches. The research methodology involves a comprehensive study of existing literature, interviews with individuals from diverse backgrounds including stakeholders, authorities, and experts, and an indepth analysis of the building's spatial language. The analysis of the building's Adaptive reuse of heritage buildings in Chanderi of 17th and 18th AD- A case of Purani Taksal Page iii spatial language plays a crucial role in determining the possibilities for adaptive reuse. By evaluating the existing layout, structural elements, and architectural features, the research explores how these characteristics can be leveraged to accommodate different functions effectively. The thesis intent to reuse the historic buildings and introduce functions in them so as to help use the dead space in the fabric. These buildings have survived the test of times by standing for more than 200-300 years and are used by the people. The thesis focuses on one building, and propose adaptive reuse of Purani Takshal, which will become a pilot for reuse of other) buildings. This thesis explores the repurposing of Taksal building as a youth hostel, by examining the potential benefits and requirement of the town taken. The design transforms the building into a vibrant and functional space that meets the specific needs of young travelers without disturbing the original fabric of the building. This thesis makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the buildings in Chanderi during the 17th-18th AD period, offering valuable insights into their spatial and architectural aspects. By shedding light on the lesser-known historical buildings in Chanderi, which hold a crucial place in the town's architectural fabric and have deeply impacted the lives of its inhabitants; this thesis aims to address their current state of abandonment and decay. Furthermore, it provides a solid foundation for further exploration and the adaptive reuse of these buildings, ensuring their preservation and revitalization. The proposed adaptive reuse of the Taksal building serves as an economical and effective model for repurposing, demonstrating the potential for breathing new life into these historic structures

    Entrepreneurship and cultural variety are celebrated in Surat. On the banks of the Tapi River, this location is sometimes referred to as “Suryapur”. Understanding the geographical characteristics that have influenced Surat's setting, position, and development is necessary to comprehend the city as a commerce hub. Surat has been known as one of the most flourishing port towns during the maritime trade. During the period of 16th – 18th CE, city of Surat was the leading port and one of the most significant commercial centres. It had a cosmopolitan set of merchants who engaged in extensive trade with a great variety of world regions. The former trading center, Rander was across the river and more exposed to the ocean. It was constantly attacked by Portuguese. Surat was established as a new town and a hub for the trading community as a result of this. Over time, it was home to traders, merchants, and other people from other cultures, which resulted in a fusion of social and architectural morphology. Thus, a global society developed, leading to a hybrid architectural style that is still evident in the current environment1 . The historic fabric of the city has an inner and outer wall with various gates (which no more exist), fort, road networks, markets, residential pockets, trading offices. British, Portuguese, French, Arabian, Muslims, Jains, Persian, and many other traders settled in the precinct. Their characteristics are well portrayed through the architectural expressions on building facades and spatial planning. The area of study focuses on one of the most prominent street named as „Chauta Bazaar Road‟ situated in the inner city of Surat. This is a 1km long stretch, dates back to 1700s. It covers 3 administrative wards 8, 9 and 10. Historically evolved market street starts with retail shops (of cloths, groceries, jewelry, accessories etc), eateries, pedestrian sellers, etc, leads to a node named as „Subhash Chowk‟ with grand residences and further leads to a wholesome residential stretch. The unique character of this street is the distinguishable variety of functions. During this time period, an understanding of streetscape which includes buildings, ownership, characteristics, architecture, use, original and transformed function will be established. This will cater to the analysis of physical attributes, typologies, spatial planning, condition etc. A significance of built, social and economic character of the street will be developed through the process in order to carry out the significance for the need of conservation. The approach to conservation starts with listing of buildings, mapping of street infrastructure, addressing urban issues and developing a manual/guidelines.

    The proposed project aims to revitalize the Salt Golah of Howrah by transforming it into a craft market, prioritizing both socio-economic development and the preservation of its historical significance. The goal is to introduce innovative approaches that revitalize the site, maintaining its historical importance while providing opportunities for economic growth and community development. The Salt Golah, a defunct warehouse with deep historical ties to the industrialization of Bengal and the Salt Act 1882 and Satyagraha movements, has lost its significance in the post-independence era. Surrounded by a densely populated residential area, it has transformed into an urban brownfield, neglected and underutilized. Unplanned urbanization has resulted in a scarcity of public and open spaces in Howrah and northern Kolkata. This presents an opportunity to explore alternative approaches that can accommodate the diverse nature of these abandoned landscapes within the urban fabric. Considering the site’s architectural and historical importance, as well as the needs of the local neighborhood, the current proposal for commercial redevelopment lacks clarity regarding the specific intended use. To make the most of the site’s location near key urban and transportation hubs, such as the Railway Station, Bus stand, and Howrah Bridge, the concept of developing the site as a market space emerges as a viable approach. The site’s size and proximity to the river make it suitable for utilization as a public space as well. By repurposing the site as a craft market, the project not only preserves rural art and craft but also enhances the quality of life for associated artists. It fosters community engagement, cultural exchange, and economic opportunities. The envisioned craft market becomes a hub for showcasing and promoting local craftsmanship, attracting visitors, and generating revenue. Through a thoughtful and inclusive design process, the project seeks to strike a balance between the historical value of the Salt Golah, the needs of the local community, and the potential for economic growth. By transforming the site into a vibrant and dynamic space, the project aims to breathe new life into the area, re-establishing it as a significant cultural and economic destination in Kolkata and Howrah
