Assessment of public transport level for urban poor

    No full text
This research study focuses on improving public transport accessibility for the urban poor in the context of Nagpur city, India. The study aims to identify the challenges and constraints faced by the urban poor in accessing public transport and proposes recommendations to enhance their transportation options. The research is based on a comprehensive analysis of various parameters, including proximity, frequency, reliability, and affordability, which contribute to the public transport accessibility level. The study begins with an introduction, providing the background and the need for the research. The aim and objectives of the research are outlined, along with the scope and limitations. The methodology employed for data collection and analysis is described, and the expected outcomes of the research are discussed. A literature study is conducted to understand the concepts of public transport, urban poverty, and public transport accessibility. Case studies on public transport inclusivity in Ahmedabad and mapping public transport accessibility levels in Surat are reviewed to gain insights and best practices. The city context and study area of Nagpur are then explored. The population, urbanization trends, and the presence of slums in Nagpur are analyzed. The spatial distribution of slums in different zones of the city is examined, and specific slums are selected for the study. Data collection is conducted through both secondary and primary sources. The social demographic analysis includes factors such as age, gender, income, education, ethnicity, and household structure within the slum population. Additionally, the analysis focuses on education, workforce participation, vehicular ownership, and the mode of transport used for work purposes. Observational analysis, travel behaviors, buffer zone analysis, job location analysis, and PTAL (Public Transport Accessibility Level) analysis are also performed. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed. Firstly, the location of slums should be taken into consideration while planning public transportation routes. Feeder services should be introduced to reduce the walking time for females from slums to bus stops. Provision of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure should be prioritized to enhance accessibility to longdistance bus stops. Incentivizing the public transport system for women can Assessment of Public Transport Accessibility Level for Urban Poor 5 encourage their usage and address their specific needs. Lastly, well-designed bus stop infrastructures, including seating, shelters, and information displays, should be implemented to improve the overall user experience. In conclusion, this research provides Recommendation for Urban and Transport policy decision makers into the challenges faced by the urban poor in accessing public transport and offers recommendations to enhance their mobility options. By implementing these recommendations, policymakers and transportation authorities can work towards creating a more inclusive and accessible public transportation system for the urban poor in Nagpur and similar cities

The town of Rajapur in the Ratnagiri district of Konkan is a beautiful confluence of knowledge, art, and culture. Surrounded by mountains on all four sides, Rajapur is the valley situated at the confluence of the ‘Arjuna’ river from Anuskura Ghats and the Godi River from Kharvate Kodavali. Temples, mosques, Maratha period, Peshwa period structures, bridges at Jawahar Chowk and Wadis, Vishwanath Vidyalaya, and Rajapur High School in laterite stone are all adorning the town. The study focuses on the Rajapur settlements, which hold significant historical and cultural importance due to their indigenous architectural structures, regional cultural influences, and adherence to local traditions. Additionally, the surrounding pristine environment boasts abundant natural features, including diverse flora, climate, and landscapes. However, certain areas within these settlements have been completely neglected due to evolving lifestyles, socioeconomic conditions, and changing attitudes towards inland regions. One of the ways to utilize these neglected parts, whether temporarily or permanently, is by deviating from modern urbanised practices. Consequently, the small-town area’s natural and man-made surroundings, which were once characterized by their distinct qualities, are gradually losing their essence as they are transformed to cater to contemporary needs and habits, giving rise to structures that do not align with the region's original character. However, Rajapur consists rich history, cultural background, traditional housing, interesting geology, and other factors that make it an important town in South Konkan

In 2023, India celebrates the 200 year anniversary of the advent of tea productionin the country. As the world’s second largest tea producing country after China. Comprehensive data on key aspects such as land utilization, tea bushhealth, plantation area changes, available infrastructure, shade tree density, andnatural resource potential are vital for effective planning at the Tea Board. Implementinga management information system (MIS) is crucial for informed decision-makingand maximizing tea exports. The Assam Tourism Policy, launched in November2022, prioritizes sustainable tea tourism, with approved guidelines includingfunds for tourism infrastructure and a tea museum in Dibrugarh. Theseinitiativeshighlight Dibrugarh's crucial role in the tea industry's growth and emphasizesustainable development while promoting the sector. The profound impact of land dynamics in the tea plantations over thepast twocenturies is evident. However, the literature review highlights the lack of periodicmapping, inadequate studies on the correlation between urbanizationandtealand, and a scarcity of context-specific solutions to address land degradationandpromote sustainable land utilization. Therefore, conducting a comprehensivestudy on historical trends and spatio-temporal changes is imperativetoguidefuture planning and foster a more sustainable future collectively. The aim of this research study is to assess the land use land cover changesof tea plantations of Dibrugarh City Region (Assam). The first objective of thethesisis to study the land use land cover (LULC) changes in a city region takingthecase study of Dibrugarh City Region. In this objective, the spatio-temporal changes in land cover between the years 2008-2023 were studied. Thetrendof reduction of tea plantations, type and extent of land cover changesweredetermined. It was concluded that plantation to built up land cover changewasthe most prominent among the others. The Kappa accuracy statistics measuredthe precision of land cover values, accounting for the potential skewness causedby inaccurate data. Tea Plantations-Urbanization Trade Off In Land Use Land Cover Changes In A City Region: A Case Of Dibrugarh, IndiaIV The second objective of the thesis was to ascertain the presence, natureandstrength of association between urbanization (built up) and tea plantations. Toachieve the objective, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used andit wasstatistically established that a strong negative correlationship exists betweengrowth rates of urbanization and tea plantations, indicating that the growthof built up has an association with the loss of land under tea plantations. In additiontoit, the tea plantation-to-built-up area ratio identified wards with the most significant land cover changes. To accomplish the third objective, recommendations regarding sustainablelandutilization, protection of land against degradation and interventions of tealandmanagement were explored. Buffer preparation, soil strengthening measuresandidentification of wards requiring immediate flood mitigation measuresweresuggested to resolve loss of land to natural causes. Additionally, introductionof tea tourism policy that defines the scope of tea tourism, tourismcircuit andguidelines regarding constructable land, land for tea tourism, state authorities’ approval for construction have been recommended to promote sustainableteatourism practices. Livelihood diversification, incentivized retention of landthroughtransferable development rights (TDR) are also part of suggested proposals. Over the course of the thesis, the objectives render the following outcomestothethesis- mapping of the extent of LULC changes since 2008-2023, statisticallyestablishing the correlationship between the urbanization and loss of teaplantations and recommending adoptable interventions for sustainablelandutilization in tea plantations

Wellness is the state of being in good health more holistically and continuing the practices that maintain this state of good health. Being aware of oneself and making decisions that lead to a happy and healthy life constitutes the active process of wellness. Our lifestyle largely depends on the kind of environment we live in, both built and unbuilt. There are many tangibles and intangible parameterize quality of built and unbuilt spaces. The dominant paradigm of design and development of the modern built environment is one of the biggest barriers to having a positive experience of nature today. This is particularly problematic because, even though in the natural world, our current "natural habitat"—where we spend 90% of our time—is largely an indoor built environment. People's health and fitness still depend on beneficial contact with nature, but it has become increasingly difficult to achieve this in the today’s-built environment. The key to an individual’s well-being largely depends on their physical environment and their understanding of how they can move through that environment
