    The study is set in the context of a growing elderly population, where projections indicate an increase in the elderly demographic. Elderly individuals face unique challenges in adapting to modern urban interventions. Several obstacles hinder elderly access, including safety concerns, transportation challenges, and reduced social engagement. Social isolation is also a significant issue among the elderly, which is making inclusive urban planning crucial. Despite the potential for decreased social engagement, planners often overlook the design of age-friendly urban spaces. The study reviews existing literature on age-friendly urban planning, emphasizing the need for global cooperation, national policies, and reports on elderly wellbeing. It also aims to reevaluate land use and built environment; and enhance urban open spaces' accessibility and quality, promoting the well-being and inclusivity of the elderly population. An understanding must be developed whether social opportunities for elderly well-being are decreasing due to growing urbanization or not. The research objectives include site study, data collection through observations in current urban open spaces, interviews, and surveys, as well as engagement with local stakeholders conducting surveys and exploring strategies for social engagement. The research scope covers a specific neighbourhood of South Mumbai, Maharashtra, focusing on parameters like walkability, transportation, social infrastructure, safety, land use change, and the built environment. The study aims to improve age-friendliness and explore social opportunities in the chosen neighbourhood, offering policy recommendations and data-driven insights which require GIS and observation of activities and getting insight of changes at several locations. It will emphasis importance of Community-based involvement - the importance of inclusive urban planning, land use interventions, and increased social engagement in creating age-friendly cities

    Historic Urban Landscape Management Plan for the Restoration of Munj Sagar lake, Dhar Madhya Pradesh

    Wetlands complex of Munj Sagar lake Dhar in Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh has historical significance in the city. The complex is a man-made wetland built in 993 AD by Raja Munja and this complex is the largest source of water in the city responsible for recharge tube wells and irrigation for agriculture in the area. The wetland complex is recognized by EPCO as water stressed type1 urban lake. The elevation of the lake is 555m from the sea level and is approx. 49.59 ha. The region is bounded by Vindhya ranges and is the major sub-catchment of Chambal River. The catchment of the lake is having urban setting and agriculture land and has historical monuments around it. The rapid urbanization is transforming the essence of many historic urban landscapes. In the past decades increase in urban population, urban settlements have become centers and drivers for economic growth as a result the landscape have come under a large array of new pressure and transforming urban areas and their setting which may cause fragmentation and deterioration to urban heritage. (MOEF&CC, 2019) (Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape. 2011) Wetlands are essential for human well beings’ economic security and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Urban wetland is subjected to anthropogenic pressures, including land use changes in the catchment, pollution from the industries and households, encroachments and tourism leading to imbalance in ecology of the wetland system. (MOEF&CC, 2019) Urban heritage is the social, cultural and economic asset for the humanity with an layering of historic values. HUL approach is the part of local policy in many western countries organizations like European Landscape Conventions and ICOMOS General Assembly has adopted this approach and have define the strategies to address it. (Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape, 2011) HUL approach is the need of the hour for management of Historical Urban Landscape with high heritage value. This study approach will acknowledge the need for in-depth understanding of the integration of wetland restoration with the perspective of Historic Urban Landscape.     Conservation of Wetland through Landscape Management Strategies: a case of Nandur Madhmeshwar, Niphad, Nashik, Maharashtra

    Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary is a protected (1986) wetland ecosystem in Nashik district, Maharashtra, and as Ramsar site since June 2019. Two corridors of Central Asia flyway pass through this region (Flyway, 2010). The wetland is a mosaic of marshes and riparian forest patches in a semi-arid region with 750mm rainfall (Ramsar, 2020). The geomorphic setting is a confluence of two rivers, Godavari and Kadwa, where the constructed weir and fertile alluvial soil belt's presence have led to predominant landuse being farming. Biodiversity here is affected by anthropogenic activities, agriculture runoff, sewerage and effluents disposed in the waterbody (SANDRP, 2020). Study of water and soil sample collected by the author on 02 January 2023 exhibit the presence of high levels of heavy metals such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sodium1. Spread of invasive fish and plant species like Prosopis juliflora are some major concerns. Regional landscape challenges can be tackled through adaptive collaborative management, stakeholder involvement by shared goals, management strategies at multiple scales, and through multiple objectives (Sayer, Terry, Jaboury, Michelle, 2013). Human well-being is intertwined with ecosystem health in ways that require to be studied in terms of "contextually relevant constituents. objective, subjective and relational components" (Matthew Agarwala, 2014). It is intuitively known that better management of agriculture practices, waste disposal, and water extraction are necessary conditions for ecological restoration of the wetland through landscape management framework. The study will inquire into the physical, spatial and social indicators undertaking site mapping, synthesising physiographic and other landscape data, stakeholder interviews, focus groups and their site adaptation strategies towards issues identification, and prioritization. Due to the fact that there is no singly accepted conceptual framework for assessment (Irene van Kam, 2003), this study employs a grounded approach is employed in order to advance a framework including biodiversity, water quality, and activities suitable to the Eco-sensitive zone.     The thesis titled “Revisiting the Logistics Policy in Different States of India” provides an in-depth analysis of the logistics park policies implemented across various states in India. It explores the evolution of these policies, their current status, and their impact on the logistics sector. It focuses on case study of states like Punjab and Gujarat, which have introduced significant policies such as the Integrated Logistics & Logistics Park Policy 2023 and the Integrated Logistics and Logistics Park Policy 2021 respectively. These policies aim to enhance warehousing services, material handling, packaging facilities, and transport facilities. It is further delves into the effectiveness of these policies in reducing freight costs and time, cutting warehousing costs, reducing vehicular pollution and congestion, and improving the tracking and traceability of consignments. It also discusses the challenges faced in implementing these policies and provides recommendations for future policy-making. It explores that while these policies have made significant strides in improving logistics infrastructure, there is a need for continuous review and revision to ensure they remain relevant and effective in the ever-evolving logistics sector. The research underscores the importance of these policies in enhancing India’s logistics infrastructure and making it more efficient and cost-effective. It also highlights the government’s commitment to improving the logistics sector, which is considered the backbone of economic growth. It is evident that continuous efforts are required to ensure that these policies are effectively implemented and deliver the desired results.     Case of Ahmedabad Metro

    India's urban population grew significantly and travel habits are being significantly impacted. Rapid urbanization in Indian cities has brought about heavy traffic and pollution, and there is growing reliance on private vehicles. Further, Metro Rail Policy, 2017 has facilitated the development of metro-based transit systems around the nation. Earlier before 2014, five Indian cities had even a modest 229 km of metro rail systems, while as of April 2023, 860 km of metro lines have developed across 20 cities. However, most cities' metro usage has remained low, often accounting for <10% of the expected passengers. As of December 2022, not a single Indian city had reached the ridership targets, with several cities finding it difficult to reach the targets. So, it becomes essential to study what are the possible reasons behind it. TOD can influence a shift towards public transportation and numerous publications on TOD are related to travel behavior. However, majority of research concentrates on the mode preferences of inhabitants at their origin, ignoring crucial information regarding destinations. Moreover, previous research tends to focus mostly on work trips, ignoring non-work trips, which account for a large amount of daily travel. So, the study tends to focus on three broad research questions: Firstly, what is the difference in the modal share of metro for various purposes among people residing around metro catchment areas? Secondly, how does destination play a role in preference of the metro? Thirdly, what are the differences in perception of barriers and facilitators among different user groups in metro usage? The study aims to assess the variations in travel behavior in transit-served areas among different user groups to enhance metro ridership. To achieve this, three broad objectives need to be achieved. Firstly, to identify factors that are suitable for assessing variations in travel behavior around metro stations. Secondly, to analyze how travel behavior varies across the factors through suitable methods and understand what problems people face. Thirdly, to recommend planning measures for improving access and enhancing metro ridership while promoting inclusivity. This study tends to focus on understanding the travel behavior of individuals residing in areas served by the metro taking the case of Ahmedabad. Identification of travel behavior variables is done through literature, and three metro station areas are selected based on factors such as urban character, built density, and proximity to the city center, and 800m is selected as the buffer radius. The study included both primary surveys and secondary data through organizations. Travel behavior analysis has been carried out based on four parameters namely variation across demographic and socio-economic parameters, area characteristics, destination preferences and proximity from metro stations, and barriers/facilitators in metro usage. For the variations across first parameter, in the case of gender, the results reveal that males prefer the metro more for work purposes. In contrast, females prefer the metro mostly for non-work purposes such as shopping, while in terms of age, results showcase that young and adults between 18-50 mostly prefer metro as compared to teenagers (60) and the younger ones mostly prefer metro for non-work such as education purposes. In terms of Income groups, results reveal that middle-income groups have a higher inclination towards metro usage, followed by lower-income groups, Assessing Travel behavior variation in Transit-served areas: case of Ahmedabad metro though not many preferences of <10k income groups have been seen as they do not find metro affordable, or have their destinations nearby, while higher income groups tend to have a lower inclination as evidenced by the results. In terms of area characteristics such as core v/s periphery, it was observed that trip share of metro is more on peripheral stations as compared to core metro stations reasons being: (a) Distance and (b) Income variations. In terms of urban character such as old v/s new city, the results revealed that the trip share of the metro is more for the metro station areas located in the old city as compared to one in the new city reasons being: (a) Income (b) Vehicle Ownership. In terms of destination preferences & proximity from metro stations, it was seen that private vehicles are preferred even for the work and shopping centers located within 1km of metro stations, due to poor last-mile solutions, not always affordable to switch on modes, not enough availability of shared mobility services, costly CNG Autos, and poor pedestrian infrastructure. In contrast, for educational purposes, it was seen that the metro is preferred for the educational institutes located within 1km of metro stations. Some significant statistical tests were carried out on SPSS to validate the results of socio-economic parameters with the travel behavior. Two tests namely Chi-square and Kruskal Wallis were carried out. For the modal share, the results revealed that there is a significant difference (P-value 0.04) observed in the modal share across different age groups, while no significant variations were observed in terms of gender. For the travel distance, it was seen that there is a significant difference (P-value 0.003 and 0.035) observed in the travel distance across gender and different income groups, while no significant variations were observed in terms of age groups. In terms of perception towards metro usage, affordability, metro timings, frequency, first & last-mile connectivity, and parking availability have significant differences among metro and non-metro users as non-metro users have lower satisfaction levels. Common facilitators in metro usage include safety, security, reliability, comfort, convenience, ticketing facility, and user information, while common barriers to metro usage among both users include metro coverage, pedestrian infrastructure, and cycle tracks. The insights gained from this research provide valuable information for policymakers and urban planners aiming to enhance metro accessibility and usage. Moving forward, policymakers/ planners should focus on addressing issues with solutions such as car-lite or zero-vehicle growth policies, designating low emission or zero emission zones, station area approach for TOD, maximizing public transport usage through incentives/subsidies. Moreover, deployment of E-autos in Ahmedabad can be helpful. Apart from these, technological innovations such as be in be out ticketing system and behavioural interventions such as nudging and gamification towards public transport can help maximize the usage. Raising awareness of the benefits of metro use and implementing targeted interventions to increase user satisfaction can encourage greater public transportation adoption. By addressing these key areas, metro systems can better serve diverse user groups, promote sustainable urban mobility, and contribute to reducing reliance on private vehicles

    India has an abundance of navigable waterways, including river systems, canals, backwaters, creeks, and tidal inlets. These waterways span approximately 14,500 km, of which 5600 km can be traversed by motorised vessels. Only a few States and specific locations have navigable waterways. A network of rivers, canals, backwaters, and streams known as inland waterways can be utilised for transportation in addition to or instead of highways and railroads. Rivers have been useful conduits for moving people and things over great distances throughout history. Many nations still rely mostly on inland water transportation since it is less expensive, more dependable, and environmentally friendly than shipping cargo by rail or road. The Inland Water Transport (IWT) is functionally important in regions covered by the Brahmaputra and the Ganges in the North-East and Eastern parts of the country, Kerala, Goa and in the deltas of the rivers of Krishna and Godavari. Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Three rivers converge at the city's location: the Yamuna, the Ganges, and the fabled Sarasvati. The geography and culture of the city are fundamentally shaped by these rivers. The rivers that flow through Prayagraj are examples of interior waterways that have historically been important for trade and transportation. However, with the Indian government pushing to promote waterways as an efficient source of transportation, interest in their use for modern inland canal transportation has increased. Additionally, passenger ferries have a great deal of promise to advance resilient and sustainable transportation. As a result, it's important to consider passenger ferry services from the perspective of operations and policy, as this will assist define and preserve the current and planned water transport routes in addition to other forms of transportation. A significant inland canal in India, National canal-1 (NW-1) spans the Ganges River from Haldia in West Bengal to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. There are continuing development initiatives to improve the Ganges' navigability for both passenger and freight transportation. The purpose of this thesis is to better understand how users and operators perceive the current quality of ferry service operations and to provide strategies for improving water transport in cities to increase the viability of both proposed new routes and current routes in response to future demand

Orphanages, as unique typologies, play a crucial role in providing care and education to children in need. However, traditional orphanages often face challenges related to limited opportuni ties for social integration. The project aims to address these issues by reimagining the orphanage typology and extending its activities to the surrounding society. By creating a permeable en vironment, the project seeks to equip the children with the necessary skills and con fidence for their future beyond the orphanage walls. The design concept focuses on fostering a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere, where the children feel connected to the larger community. The complex incorpo rates residential wings, educational facilities, communal spaces, and outdoor envi ronments designed to encourage interaction and collaboration with the surrounding society. The school component of the project not only imparts knowledge but also equips students with essential life skills for their personal and professional growth.     The Galta Hill pilgrimage site holds significant importance due to its array of pilgrimage sites, such as Galta Kund, the Sun Temple, a cluster of temples within the Temple complex, and numerous historical structures along the route. These structures have a rich history, primarily dating back to the 18th century, and have been revered as the dwelling places of esteemed saints like Galav Rishi and Payohari Bawa, who sought solace in their meditation practices within this sacred environment. The site attracts a considerable number of domestic and international tourists on a daily basis who embark on a pilgrimage trek along a stone-paved road that leads to the Galta Temple Complex, situated at a lower level in the valley towards the east. The Sun Temple, constructed by Rao Kirpa Ram during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Raja Jai Singh II, holds particular significance as an essential stop along the pilgrimage journey. However, despite its historical and cultural significance, the Galta Hill pilgrimage site has experienced a decline in recent times. This decline manifests in multiple aspects, including the deterioration of architectural features and an overall decrease in its cultural importance. Contemporary observations reveal a significant departure from the site's original character, mainly due to negligence and a lack of proper management. As a result, historical evidence associated with the site has gradually disappeared, posing a threat to the preservation of its heritage. In light of these challenges, the objective of this research thesis is to ascertain the value and significance of the Galta Hill pilgrimage site while addressing the existing gaps that have contributed to its decline. By conducting an in-depth study, this research aims to understand and highlight the cultural, historical, and architectural significance of the site.
