Dreams as reinforcing stimulus in emily jane bronte’s gothic romance
Dreams and interpretation of dreams are elements that have been subjected to psychological, neuroscientific and religious examination. Dreaming, a common experience, is shared by mankind irrespective of race, gender or social indices and has been identified even in species amongst mammals. This study is concerned with the significance of dreams as reinforcing stimuli in literary texts. It explores the category of dreams that are yet to be dreamt but are explored as reinforcing stimuli in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. These dreams which are mental creations of creative writers are attributed to characters invented for the purpose o f a story or a narrative technique. Brontes engagement of the dream concept and dream interpretation in constructing the plot, the structure and characterisation in Wuthering Heights is also a concern of this paper. It is observed that they embody dominant literary and archetypal elements with universal appeal. Dream visions in Emily Bronte's gothic romance portray hidden psychological and emotional patterns of individuals which recur while dreaming. Taking bearingfrom Freudian perspectives, dream analysis in literary texts reveals depths of buried memories in a manner that they can be explicated
The use of modern technology in controlling criminal activities in academic libraries: the case of Kenneth Dike Library and Obafemi Awolowo University Library
The study investigated the use of modem technology in controlling criminal activities in academic libraries. The study was driven by the desire to determine what precipitated crimes in the academic libraries, the types and nature of criminal activities perpetrated in the library by the patrons, to identify current modem technology used in reducing and addressing criminal activities in the libraries, to identify library materials more vulnerable to crimes and the challenges faced by the academic libraries in curbing crimes. A descriptive survey was utilised and questionnaires methods were the instrument for data collection. The questionnaires were administered to both Academic and Paraprofessional librarians of the University of Ibadan Kenneth Dike Library and Obafemi Awolowo University Library. A simple random technique was adopted. A total of Sixty (60) questionnaires were randomly distributed with each library given thirty (30). Data was presented and analyzed according to the research questions of the study using simple percentage and frequencies. Due to the prevalence of criminal activities in our academic libraries in the recent times, the study unraveled varying consequential modem technology that can be adopted in curbing criminal activities in our institutions. The study finally revealed that despite the efficacy of modern technology in preventing criminal activities in academic libraries, poor funding of the academic libraries as well as insensitivity of the library management towards the issue of crimes were the major challenges in curbing crimes. This might be due to the fact that modem technology in crime prevention is capital intensive and no special fund is provided for that in the budget of the library. Based on these, recommendations were made that library management should give proper attention to security issues; that there should be special funds for security issues in the library and special awareness , enlightenment and proper education should be provided for the users during orientation programme
Parental impact on children living with autism spectrum disorder at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Nigeria
Parenting is a problem affecting the well-being of children with autism spectrum disorder in Nigeria. Previous studies on subjective wellbeing had focused on school and environmental factors. This paper investigated parental impact on wellbeing of children with autism at the University College Hospital Ibadan. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 55 parents of children (caregivers) with autism spectrum disorders as respondents. A structured questionnaire titled "Parental Impact and Autism Spectrum Disorder Questionnaire (PIASDQ) was used to elicit responses and data were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Regression Analysis tested at 0.05 alpha level. There is a significant positive relationship between parental impact and psychological wellbeing of children with autism disorder (r = .811, n= 55, P(.001) < 0.05), there is a significant positive relationship between parental impact and health wellbeing of children with autism disorder (r = .717, n= 55, P(.003) < 0.05), there is a significant positive relationship between parental impact and social wellbeing of children with autism disorder (r = .724, n= 55, P(.001) < 0.05). The study therefore, recommended that bad parenting is a major issue that must be addressed quickly to reduce negative wellbeing among children with autism disorder
Rehabilitation and re-integration of women with post obstetric fistula repairs in Nigeria
Global concern exits far a holistic attention on women with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in lite area of rehabilitation and re-integration. This paper focused on the rehabilitation and re-integration of women with post-obstetric fistula in Nigeria. The economic and psychosocial effects of this medical condition cannot be over-emphasized. Amongst the factors accountable for its high incidence in Nigeria is traditional/cultural practices of early marriage/childbearing while the consequences include divorce, social isolation, worsening poverty, malnutrition, sexual dysfunction, mental illness (including anxiety/depression), insomnia, general ill health, and thoughts of worthlessness and suicide. To put an end to this avoidable public health pandemic; there is need for holistic consolidation of structures and safety nets for post-obstetric patients. Government should intensify policies enacted to safe-guard the girl child and woman from traditionally harmful activities. There should be engagement of social worker in the rehabilitation and re-integration of women with post-obstetric fistul
Evaluation of depredation activities of vertebrate pest species in cassava cultivation at sasa-ajibode, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria
Cassava is the fourth most important food crop in developing countries, after rice, maize, and wheat. African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus), cane rats/grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), and birds such as bush fowl (Francolinus bicalcaratus), among others, cause considerable damage to cassava crops. The present study was conducted on an existing cassava farm located at Shasha- Ajibode, Akinyele Local Government of Ibadan, Oyo state. Systematic sampling was used to collect quantitative and qualitative damages in the study area. Data were analyzed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Least Significant Difference (LSD) at the level of significance of P≤0.05. The results showed that there were evidences of root damage done in plot 1 (21.67%), plot 2 (14.00%), and plot 3 (20.00%) at 14 Weeks After Planting (WAP). Plot 2 had the highest total stem cut percentage (36.36%) while plot 1 and 2 had the same percentage of total stem cut (31.82%). It was revealed that the position of the plots had no significant effect on the damage level caused by the vertebrate pests on cassava roots and stems. It can be inferred that even though the damage level was not significant, attention should be given to managing those rodent populations and damages so that they do not escalate to causing unbearable economic loss
A hospital-based study of stigmatisation and well-being of relative of mentallv-ill in Ogun State, Nigeria
The study was a hospital-based one that investigated stigmatisation and well-being of relatives of the mentally-ill in Ogun State It adopted a correlational research design to study 252 relative of mentally-ill-using purposive sampling technique. Self-administered, structured questionnaire and in-depth interview, guides served as instrument for data collection respectively. The data obtained were analysed at univariate and bivariate levels with the aid of statistical package for social science. The findings revealed a weak negative correlation [r(250)=-083,p>0.05] between stigmatisation and self-acceptance among relatives of mentally-ill. A weak negative correlation was also found [r(250)= -167, p0.05] between burden of care and care of mentally-ill. However, the contrast was the case with the qualitative finding, it was concluded that stigmatisation has many negative consequences on persons having mental illness including their relatives` well-being in terms of self-acceptance, personal growth and burden of care of mentally-il
Evaluation of Thermal Effects on Slag Cement Concrete’s Strength Properties
The physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of concrete change with heat-fire. The effect of thermal load on Slag cement concrete output must be measured because of the crucial role of thermal resistance in concrete structure performance and operation. This work examines the thermal resistance of Slag cement concrete. The concrete cubes were produced and cured for 28 days and then subjected to varying temperatures range of 100°C, 150°C, 200°C, 250°C, and 300°C. Hardness and compressive strength were measured at 30, 45, and 60 minutes; the sample results were compared to those of ordinary Portland cement used for the study. The findings of this experiment demonstrate that strength loss was 0.45% at 100 °C, 1.75% at 150 °C, 2.67% at 200°C, 5.98% at 250°C and 12.04 % at 300 °C, the hardness property increased from 100° to 150°C but decreased with higher temperatures. However, average concrete loss at 300 °C exceeds 20 percent of its compressive strength. This means that higher temperatures have adverse effects on concrete strength. From the test, however, it has been noted that there was an insignificant loss of strength of concrete at temperatures below 250°C and however, above 250 °C, a significant loss of concrete strength was observed. The results indicate that slag concrete has a significantly higher thermal resistance potential than traditional concrete and can be used even in industrial applications

Activities of religious actors as a factor in national security discourse
Insecurity has become a hydra headed monster which security agents in Nigeria and other nations in Africa appear incapable of handling. Insecurity is a state of being subject to danger or threat. It has also been defined as a threat to the state which often accounted for the race for arms and nuclear weapons to defend the state. Insecurity has taken a centre stage in Nigeria and many other countries in Africa in the recent time. No day passes, without the news of one form of violence or the other, and this has turned the countries in Africa to almost a pariah state. After the country gained its independence from the colonial masters’ overs six decades ago, many Nigerians believed that the country would be ushered into the promised land. Rather, the country has been experiencing a plethora of conflicts ranging from the threat of secession, civil wars, regional conflicts, and internal crises (ethnic, religious etc.) which continue to affect the country's nascent democratic structure and development. The various conflicts have destabilized the country and their costs in terms of loss of human life and property are so enormous. Religion is being used by religious actors as tool to fan the embers of insecurity in Nigeria. The spate of insecurity that has engulfed Nigeria has forced many to flee their homes to more peaceful neighbouring countries. Existing scholarly studies on insecurity in Nigeria and other African countries like Achumba, 2013, Ede, 2014 and Awoniyi, 2019 have focused mainly on the traditional approach to security which is state-centric with little attention paid to how religious fundamentalism, fanaticism, blasphemy, extremism and hate speech have over the years been deployed by religious actors to grease the wheel of insecurity in Nigeria and Africa in general. The aim of this paper therefore, is to examine the activities of religious actors in relation to insecurity in Nigeria. This is the gap in study the researcher intends to fill
