    There is a glaring divide between institutional literature and the user community. Institutional Repository (IR) deals with bridging the gap between institutions’ ever growing educational and research output, and the users of the materials for teaching/learning, research, decision making and societal advancement. According to literature, the pace of adoption of IR has been slow and quit uneven especially in the developing world with very few universities adopting IR in Nigeria. In the light of the innumerable benefits of institutional repository, Kenneth Dike Library has joined university libraries all over the world in the adoption of institutional repository. The paper examined the institutional repository of Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan (UI) which is a Premier university in Nigeria. The study adopted survey method. Interview instrument was used for the study. The basic information about UI institutional repository development and management procedures were obtained through a face-to-face interview with some of the library’s systems staff that are knowledgeable on the university’s IR. The study identified the procedural activities in the IR development at Kenneth Dike Library (KDL), which include strategic planning of the project by UI library management, seeking for and obtaining the university management’s approval, the adoption of in-house approach to digitization and management of IRs, and the continual digitization processes. Finally the study indicated some problems and solutions in the management of University of Ibadan IR project which could be of help to those institutions that are yet to establish IRs

    Effect of residence time on characteristics of torrefied sawdust produced from gmelina arborea (roxb) wood

    Biomass feedstock remains a critical ingredient in all densification studies and the process conditions under which these materials were produced are significant to its performance. Conventionally, feedstocks are utilized in briquetting without major technological processing which is consequential on product characteristics. In this study, sawdust of Gmelina arborea subjected to thermochemical pre-treatment conditions was analysed and characteristics were compared with untreated material. Materials and Methods: Untreated sawdust of Gmelina arborea wood obtained from a sawmill in Ishiagu was torrefied at three residence times of 30 min, 45 and 60 min at a temperature of 250EC in a batch reactor and the products were characterized to determine their physical and chemical characteristics. Results: The particle-size distribution of untreated sawdust showed greater proportions of coarse and fine pin particles (58.03%) and (38.00%), respectively, requiring no grind with a mean particle density of 159.30±0.02. The proximate analysis of untreated sawdust at 7.78% moisture content revealed a volatile matter content of 72.93, 2.19% ash content and 17.10% carbon content. The proximate analysis of torrefied samples revealed a significant loss in volatile matter contents to 21.02% as residence time increased to 60 min, the fixed carbon increased from 17.10-65.38% and calorific values from 17.38 MJ kgG1 for raw sawdust to 26.28 MJ kgG1 as residence time increases. Reduction in volatile matter contents increased the energy values of torrefied sawdust. Conclusion: Thermochemical pretreatment of the feedstock significantly increase the material fixed carbon content and energy values of the Torrefied sample, reduced the volatile matter-the smoke-generating component of sawdust considerably and improved the product’s characteristics in briquetting

    Gender analysis of life aspiration among youth in Ogun State, Nigeria

This study therefore focused on analysis of life aspiration of youth in Ogun State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 135 respondents for the study using Interview schedule as the instrument for data collection. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as chi-square, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and independent sample t-test. Result reveals that 56.3% of the respondents’ were male, the mean age of the respondents was 23.9years, male respondents (57.9%) had higher aspiration than female respondents (44.1%), respondents had more of intrinsic (73.40±11.66) aspiration than extrinsic (64.05±14.20). There was a significant relationship between parents’ occupation of the female respondents (p ≤ 0.05) and their life aspiration. Similarly, there was a significant relationship between father’s educational attainments of male respondents (p ≤ 0.05) and their life aspiration. Respondents were mostly motivated by their interest and ability, parental/guidance influence, educational level and were mostly constrained by inadequate finance, unemployment and inconsequential social network. This study concluded that life aspiration of youth was high. It was recommend that youth should be encouraged to pursue their interest and ability, attain higher educational level, and be granted easy access to finance, provision of empowerment and employment opportunities amongst others

    Drivers of vulnerability to climate change and adaptive responses of forest-edge farming households in major agro-ecological zones of Nigeria

    An understanding of forest communities’ risk factors for climate variation, adaptation trajectories, and how agroecological differences shape their responses are critical to future policy formulation in Nigeria. Therefore, drivers of vulnerability to climate change and adaptation options of forest communities’ farming households in major agro-ecological zones of Nigeria were investigated. Data were collected, using an interview schedule, from 183 forest-edge households in savanna, mangrove, and rainforest agro-ecologies. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance were used to analyse the data. Respondents cultivated 6.4 ± 2.6 acres of farmland. Changes in rainfall patterns were most experienced in the rainforest and savanna whereas, it was temperature fluctuation in the mangrove. Crop farming was the worst hit by climate change among other livelihoods. Crop rotation in the savanna and mangrove (X = 2.12; 2.44, respectively), and mixed farming in the rainforest (X = 2.52) were top adaptation priorities while crop insurance was the least. Low paying livelihood alternatives (X = 1.54), illiteracy (X = 1.73), and lack of infrastructure (X = 1.38) were major social vulnerability drivers of climate change in the savanna, mangrove, and rainforest, respectively. Major political and economic drivers were inconsistent government policy and poverty, respectively. The use of adaptation measures was not significantly different in the agro-ecologies, whereas, the livelihood impact of climate change was (F = 9.990; p < 0.05).     Thermodynamic optimization of parallel and spiral plate heat exchangers for modified solar thermal brayton cycle models

    The receiver and heat exchangers in a Solar Thermal Brayton Cycle (STBC) have been the main sources of exergy loss. Duct profiles used in the heat exchange process have been observed to possess varying degrees of heat transfer effectiveness. To this end, the effects of the elliptical, circular and rectangular absorber tubes are investigated on three variants of the dual serial-regenerative STBC models employing reheater, intercooler, or in a combined arrangement. Also, the impact of the parallel plate heat exchanger (PPHE) and spiral plate heat exchangers (SPHE) on irreversibility is investigated. The particle swarm algorithm (PSA), a stochastic optimization tool is used for the minimization of irreversibilities within the cycle and optimization of the geometric parameters of the STBC components. The largest irreversibility loss on a component-basis is observed on the receiver. The rectangular absorber system for the receiver has the least irreversibility loss compared to other profiles studied, though, a higher internal to external irreversibility ratio was noticed. Improved exergy use via the dual regenerative system was observed on all models with reductions of 22% and 15% in irreversibility obtained from the receiver and recuperator respectively. In addition, the SPHE produced less irreversibilities compared to the PPHE system and this could be attributed to its large surface area available for heat transfer. An optimal second law efficiency of 62% and 74% on the PPHE and SPHE STBC systems, respectively is achieved at around a pressure ratio of 2.2. The dual serial-regenerative sys- tem without reheats and intercooling has the advantage of optimal energy available and efficient exergy use followed by the combined system

    Carbonic anhydrase polymorphism in West African Dwarf goat populations of western Nigeria

    Carbonic anhydrase polymorphism in West African Dwarf (WAD) goat populations, from Oyo and Ogun States was investigated using the cellulose acetate electrophoresis system. Blood samples of 5 mL were collected from 60 WAD goats (30 from Ibadan (Oyo State) and 30 from Ijebu-Ode (Ogun State), via the jugular veins and placed into heparinised bottles. The results of the electrophoresis analyses were subjected to statistical analysis using Tools For Population Genetic Analysis (TFPGA) software. The results revealed that two alleles, CAF and CAS govern the three genotypes (CAFF, CAFS and CASS) with CASS being prevalent. Allele frequencies ranged from 0.24 for CAF in Ijebu-Ode to 0.76 in CAS also from Ijebu-Ode while the genotype frequencies ranged from 0.09 in CAFF from Ijebu-Ode to 0.61 in CASS also from the Ijebu-Ode population. Deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was significant (P ≤ 0.05) in the population from Ibadan. Average gene diversity was 0.43, while the expected heterozygosity HE(0.47) was higher than the observed heterozygosity HO(0.25).Wright analysis showed that the populations sampled were from inbred populations with a positive FIT and FIS value (0.47, and 0.06 respectively) implying deficiency in heterozygote and the FST value of 0.45 indicating greater genetic differentiations among the populations giving opportunity for improvement

    Assessment of Attitude, Practice and Barriers to Pharmaceutical Care Among Community Pharmacists in Ibadan

    Background: Pharmaceutical care (PC) is a professional responsibility of a pharmacist that involves medication management with the overall goal of improving the quality of life of patient. Objectives: To evaluate the attitude, practice, and barriers to PC among community pharmacists in Ibadan. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among community pharmacists between May and July 2021, with the aid of a self-administered questionnaires, information on socio-demographic characteristics, practice, attitudes, and barriers to PC was obtained. A consecutive sampling technique was used for participants’ enrolment. Participating pharmacists must have had a minimum of one-year practice experience in a community pharmacy. Pharmacy students, interns, non-pharmacist attendants, and community pharmacists who were absent from their pharmacies during the study were excluded. Data were summarized with descriptive statistics. Results: Over 12 weeks, 120 survey were collected (90.9% response rate). About (115; 95.8%) of respondents had good practice of PC and reported that pharmaceutical care is a timely innovation to pharmacy practice. However, only (62; 52.0%) had positive attitude and (117; 97.5%) believed more pharmaceutical care could be provided. Regarding their practice, most respondents (118; 98.3%) stated pharmaceutical care involves monitoring improvement in patient response to treatment and adherence to treatment regime and counselling patients with drug therapy problems. The top detected barriers for PC provision included insufficient time (71; 59.2%), and inadequate collaboration with other healthcare professionals (56; 46.7%). Conclusion: Community pharmacists in Ibadan demonstrated good practice and positive attitudes towards PC provision. However, further work should emphasise on improving PC understanding, better collaboration among other healthcare professionals and overcoming system-related barriers

    The incessant cases of pedophilia in Nigeria: law to the rescue?

    In the last decade, statistics have shown that sexual offences are on the increase. However, one of such offences generating serious concern in Nigeria and other parts of Africa is the unusual sexual interactions between a male adult and the girl child. Sometimes, this act occurs between biologically related persons, for example, between a father and his girl child. This social behaviour is clearly differentiated from other sexual offenses, such as rape, indecent assault on females, defilement, and other acts classified as unnatural offences which are expressly provided for in both the Criminal Code Act and Penal Code Law. Until the last two decades, adult sexual disorder which consists of adult's desire for sexual gratification through child molestation, particularly among prepubescent children was not prevalent. This paper seeks to examine the factors responsible for the frequency of pedophilia in Nigeria, its effects on society, and the adequacy of law or otherwise to curb the menace. The possibility of using other instruments for the total eradication of the act or such that will deter persons with such traits outside the legal instrument will be considered. This work will make recommendations that seek to either totally eradicate the practice or reduce its incidence

    Evaluation of depredation activities of vertebrate pest species in cassava cultivation at sasa-ajibode, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria

    Cassava is the fourth most important food crop in developing countries, after rice, maize, and wheat. African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus), cane rats/grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), and birds such as bush fowl (Francolinus bicalcaratus), among others, cause considerable damage to cassava crops. The present study was conducted on an existing cassava farm located at Shasha- Ajibode, Akinyele Local Government of Ibadan, Oyo state. Systematic sampling was used to collect quantitative and qualitative damages in the study area. Data were analyzed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Least Significant Difference (LSD) at the level of significance of P≤0.05. The results showed that there were evidences of root damage done in plot 1 (21.67%), plot 2 (14.00%), and plot 3 (20.00%) at 14 Weeks After Planting (WAP). Plot 2 had the highest total stem cut percentage (36.36%) while plot 1 and 2 had the same percentage of total stem cut (31.82%). It was revealed that the position of the plots had no significant effect on the damage level caused by the vertebrate pests on cassava roots and stems. It can be inferred that even though the damage level was not significant, attention should be given to managing those rodent populations and damages so that they do not escalate to causing unbearable economic loss
