Influence of knowledge on practice of deaf culture among students with hearing impairment in the South-west, Nigeria
The study examined the level of knowledge about the practice of deaf culture of students with hearing impairment in the South-West, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 673 students with hearing impairment in 12 integrated schools in six states of the South-West. A self-designed instrument tagged “Test of Knowledge of Students with Hearing Impairment on Deaf Culture ”(r=0.73) was used for data collection. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentage and inferential statistics of t-test. The findings of the study revealed that students with hearing impairment have a fair knowledge of deaf culture (1.61). It was also revealed that there was a significant difference between the level of knowledge about the deaf culture of students with hearing impairment with deaf parents and those with hearing parents (t=3.83; df=671). There was a significant difference between knowledge about deaf culture among students with pre-lingua! and those with post- lingual hearing loss (1=6.94: df=671). There was also a significant difference between the level of knowledge about deaf culture of male and female students with hearing impairment (t=3.94). Knowledge about deaf culture was greatly determined by parents’ hearing status, the onset of hearing impairment and students’ gender. There is an urgent need to incorporate deaf culture into the educational system in the integrated secondary schools to meet the cultural, social and linguistic needs of students with hearing impairment

Evaluation of depredation activities of vertebrate pest species in cassava cultivation at sasa-ajibode, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria
Cassava is the fourth most important food crop in developing countries, after rice, maize, and wheat. African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus), cane rats/grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), and birds such as bush fowl (Francolinus bicalcaratus), among others, cause considerable damage to cassava crops. The present study was conducted on an existing cassava farm located at Shasha- Ajibode, Akinyele Local Government of Ibadan, Oyo state. Systematic sampling was used to collect quantitative and qualitative damages in the study area. Data were analyzed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Least Significant Difference (LSD) at the level of significance of P≤0.05. The results showed that there were evidences of root damage done in plot 1 (21.67%), plot 2 (14.00%), and plot 3 (20.00%) at 14 Weeks After Planting (WAP). Plot 2 had the highest total stem cut percentage (36.36%) while plot 1 and 2 had the same percentage of total stem cut (31.82%). It was revealed that the position of the plots had no significant effect on the damage level caused by the vertebrate pests on cassava roots and stems. It can be inferred that even though the damage level was not significant, attention should be given to managing those rodent populations and damages so that they do not escalate to causing unbearable economic loss

HISTORICAL ANALYSES OF THE BATTLES OF THE SELEUCID EMPIRE
Ancient authors such as Plutarch, Appian and Diodorus Siculus narrate the histories of the several wars that the Seleucid Empire was involved in. Modem authors draw from the works of ancient authors in discussing governance and exclusiveness of the Seleucids in their relationship with the people in their sphere of control, the personalities . of the Seleucid rulers, especially Seleucus I Nicator and Antiochus III the Great, with little attention paid to the battles of the Seleucid Empire. This paper, therefore, attempts to examine the battles fought by the Seleucid Empire, with a view to interrogating the strategies employed during the battles, the essence of some of these battles and the peace treaties drawn in the course of the battles. The paper adopts John Mearsheimer's theory of offensive realism as its aid in the discourse of the frequent battles. The paper also implements a historical methodology as it further provides a trajectory of the battles and some of the strategies deployed by the Seleucids in engaging heir enemies. Studies that may examine the tactics employed by the Seleucid rulers in the Syrian wars are recommended
Diaspora grand-mothering in Nigeria
Leaving children in the care of grandparents is a fairly common practice in close knit societies such as Nigeria. This service of providing childcare by grandmothers is however taking a transnational form with the exportation of grandmothers from Nigeria to care for grandchildren whose parents, out of economic necessity, must work fulltime. This article explores the dynamics of Nigerian grandmothers providing childcare to grandchildren in the diaspora, using twenty-five grandmothers selected in Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria based on their experience of this phenomena. Study found that participants were motivated to undertake diaspora childcare out of empathy for the younger couples, the feeling of a sense of duty, perceived knowledge of childcare, self-fulfilment, cultural norms, and the need to minimize the cost of childcare for couples in the diaspora. The sense of being ‘available’ played a significant role in participants’ decision to provide childcare abroad. The study equally showed that the practice had both emotional and social impact on the grandmothers involved. The research advances the significance of diaspora grandmother child care services as a critical part of the broader debate on companionship and gender roles in old age, especially in Africa, where elders remain key transmitters of societal norms and values

Judicial balacing of parental objection to medical treatment on the basis of religious beleifs and children right to life in Nigeria
Children being vulnerable, have special protection uudei the law through their parents 01 guardian who are responsible for them: and make decision- fot them because they lack legal capacity One of these decisions a parent/gunrdian makes i- determining the religion of a child. Once the parent guardian chooses the religion of the child, the child may become bound by its practices throughout childhood While the right of parents to determine the religion of theii children is recognised by domestic regional and international laws, the way courts in Nigeria treat this recognition suggests that the right is nol absolute. This paper adopts the doctrinal methodology 111 interrogating the extent to which Nigerian Courts permit the observation by a child oftlie religious practices ofhis/lier parent in relation to submission to medical treatment in order to protect the child's right to life This papei argues that law and morality are media of social control but have their convergence and divergence. It further argues that sanctity of human life which for many forbids suicide, requites that even adults should not be allowed to object to medical treatment which refusal may lesult in death which can be seen as "disguised suicide" These authors examined the Supreme Court decision m Medical Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Council v Okonkwo and found that: Nigerian Courts recognise parent light to choose their children religion and practices however, any religious practice prejudicial to the child based on the "best interest" principle provided under the Child Right Act and its States equivalent will be jettisoned It examines the practice til Britain and Canada and draw lessons for Nigeria. This paper recommends public enlightenment prohibition of harmful religious beliefs such as objection to life-saving medical procedure by parents for minors as means of balancing parents/guardian right to choose their children religions beliefs and preservation of the children right to life
