Development and performance evaluation of a low-cost paper egg tray making machine

    No full text
Chicken eggs are extremely fragile and require protective packaging for handling, storage and delivery. Paper egg tray, the most globally acceptable package for eggs, is often im- ported, costly and scarce in Nigeria due to difficulties in procurement and management of standard machines for trays’ local production. Therefore, this study was intended to lo- cally develop and evaluate the performance of a low-cost paper egg tray-making machine to ease the local production and distribution of paper egg trays in Nigeria. Using metal scraps as construction materials and a sand-casting method for mould manufacture, a 30- cell paper egg tray-making machine was developed, and its performance was evaluated. Power rating determination of the machine was done using Logger Interface Program. The paper egg trays having dimensions of 300 ×300mm; cell diameter of 35mm; cell depth of 25mm; and wet and dry weights of 298.0 g and 86.0 g, respectively, were produced. The vibration resistance of the manufactured trays was compared with existing oness at a frequency of 5 Hz. The machine of 1.4 Kw power rating and sand-cast aluminum-alloy moulds was developed at a total cost of N76, 720 ($210). The machine could be oper- ated manually with a minimum of one employee, using reciprocating mould movement at a capacity of ten trays per hour. An acceptable paper egg tray was obtained with Chip- board (65.0%) and Newsprint (35.0%) wastepaper mix, fabric-mesh hole-size of ≤0.6 mm and pulp slurry of 4.0% consistency. The vibration resistance result showed that the egg failure by the manufactured and existing paper egg trays was moderate and comparable. The machine development could encourage waste management, youth employment, and affordable local paper egg tray manufacture and supply in Nigeria

Cassava is the fourth most important food crop in developing countries, after rice, maize, and wheat. African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus), cane rats/grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), and birds such as bush fowl (Francolinus bicalcaratus), among others, cause considerable damage to cassava crops. The present study was conducted on an existing cassava farm located at Shasha- Ajibode, Akinyele Local Government of Ibadan, Oyo state. Systematic sampling was used to collect quantitative and qualitative damages in the study area. Data were analyzed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Least Significant Difference (LSD) at the level of significance of P≤0.05. The results showed that there were evidences of root damage done in plot 1 (21.67%), plot 2 (14.00%), and plot 3 (20.00%) at 14 Weeks After Planting (WAP). Plot 2 had the highest total stem cut percentage (36.36%) while plot 1 and 2 had the same percentage of total stem cut (31.82%). It was revealed that the position of the plots had no significant effect on the damage level caused by the vertebrate pests on cassava roots and stems. It can be inferred that even though the damage level was not significant, attention should be given to managing those rodent populations and damages so that they do not escalate to causing unbearable economic loss

The status of local purchasing order in a contract of sale of goods: a critique of the rights-based approach in Abba v. Shell petroleum development company of Nigeria limited

This paper examined the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abba v. Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited on the status of Local Purchase Order (LPO) in a contract of sale of goods. Contrary to the general rule in most countries of the world, including the United States of America and Uganda, that the LPO constitutes an offer in the law of contract, the Supreme Court held that it was an invitation to treat which is not enforceable in law. Consequently, this paper subjects this decision into a critical examination with a view to determining its accuracy. For this purpose, it interrogates the role of offer and acceptance and in particular the invitation to treat in the formation of the contract of sale of goods. It also discusses the question of what time it could be said that parties have entered into a contract of sale of goods. It interrogates the legal Status of the LPO in commercial transactions and how the status might affect the result of the application of offer and acceptance in a contract, particularly the contract of sale of goods. It concludes that, although the decision in Abba's case cannot be reconciled with similar decisions not only in Nigeria but also globally, it can be justified using the rights-based approach

This study investigated the causes, prevalence and effect of deviant behaviours among undergraduate student users of Federal university libraries in Southwest, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey research design, 108 librarians from the six Federal university libraries participated in the study. A self-devised structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collected were analysed and results presented using table of descriptive statistics, frequencies and percentages. The study revealed that deviant behaviours are opportunistic crimes caused by situational factors including a pervasive view that there is little or no danger of being caught, Porous library security, Poor illumination, lack of vigilance on the part of the employees and feeling that there is little or no punishment when caught. The findings of the study showed that the prevalent deviant behaviours which include stealing, mutilation, defacement of library materials, rudeness to library staff and misuse of library computers, can affect sustainable library growth, destroy library materials, frustrate librarians efforts, affect library image and cost taxpayers money. They reduce library’s service capacity, quality of library resources/ services, increase educational inequality, discourage library usage and reduce users’ perceived value of library services. The study suggests that situational crimes occur when the perceived cost is low and the net benefits associated with the crime is high. Therefore, managing situational crimes in the library implies achieving a balance between situational factors that increase the criminal’s perceived cost and those that decrease the criminal’s perceived benefit. The study recommends the establishment of student disciplinary and counselling units in addition to increasing the cost of crime and the risk of getting caught by increasing library security and imposing stiffer penalties for offenders in order to minimising crime commissioning among undergraduate students in federal university libraries

Philosophy and Knowledge in the Tvventy-first Century: Redefining the Role of Universities and Schools

Philosophy and knowledge are indispensable in the process and practice of education. The essence of education is to train human mind. Education enables one to reason and think critically using mind. Knowledge is essential in the process of education. What kinds of things can be known? How can it be said that a learner knows something? These questions make knowledge one of the most fundamental aspects of philosophy and education. This paper reviews literature to examine what knowledge is and what it ought to be in the 21st century. It employs speculative approach, conceptual analysis and prescriptive research methods in philosophy to expound the creation of knowledge that will be relevant far the 21st century society. The paper has revealed that there are educational initiatives in place that are being taken in the 21st century to set an educational agenda that meets the local and global standards/needs. This implies that universities and schools have an increased role to play in the 21" century including training and recruiting learners, who can, at different levels, demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. The paper recommends that knowledge creation must extend to include the physical, mental, emotional and social domains of learning as required in the 21st century

K-nearest neighbors Bayesian approach to false news detection from text on social media

    Get PDF
Social media usage has increased due to the rate at which technologies are emerging and it is less likely to detect false news/information manually as it aims to capture the human mind. The spread of false news can cause havoc; therefore, detection of false news becomes paramount where almost everyone has access to social media. Our proposed system optimizes the false news detection process. The system combines advantages of two textual feature extraction methods and two machine learning algorithms for text classification. Basic pre-processing methods were employed. Feature extraction was carried out using Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency with Word2Vector. K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Naïve Bayes (NB) algorithms are combined to give KNN Bayesian. The most available systems made use of a single feature extraction method but in our system, two feature extraction methods are combined. The evaluation metrics used were accuracy, precision, recall, f1score and KNN Bayesian performed better than KNN. To further evaluate our model, the Area under the Curve-Receiver Operator Characteristics (AUC-ROC) revealed that AUC of KNN Bayesian ROC curve is higher than that of KNN
