Multi-functional concrete with recycled aggregate
Pervious Concrete (PC) pavement is one of the most prevalent Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) used to decrease the risk of flooding, allow the natural disposal of water through infiltration and reduce the pollution of watercourses. The use of agricultural waste and collapsed buildings rubbles are reported to improve the properties of conventional concrete. However, their use in PC has not been fully explored. This study was designed to investigate the effect of Sorghum Husk Ash (SHA) on the properties of Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) PC. Sorghum husk was incinerated at 700°C for three hours to produce SHA.
The chemical composition of SHA was determined using an X- ray fluorescence analyzer. Rubbles of collapsed buildings were crushed to smaller sizes for physical and mechanical tests [specific gravity, water absorption, bulk density, void ratio, aggregate crushing value (ACV), and aggregate impact value (AIV)] and sieved to between 9.50 and 4.75 mm for PC production. Mix proportioning was done following ACI specifications. Mixtures of PC were prepared at various replacement levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25%) of cement with SHA using 100% RCA. These were molded into 100 mm (height) x 200 mm (diameter) cylindrical samples. The prepared samples’ density, compressive strength, porosity, and permeability was determined at 28-day of curing using ACI standards. The properties were correlated using regression equations in Microsoft Excel Software 2013. The adequacy of adopted equations was determined using the coefficient of determination (R2). The sum of percentages (77.3%) of silica, alumina, and ferric oxide was obtained for SHA, which is over 70% requirement of a pozzolan. Suitable result was obtained for physical and mechanical [specific gravity (2.53), water absorption (2.8%), bulk density (1301 kg/m3), void ratio (48.58%), ACV (26.96%), and AIV (24.02%)] properties of RCA. The density and compressive strength of RCA-PC respectively reduces from 1748 - 1715 kg/m3 and 7.78 - 4.05 N/mm2 while the porosity and permeability increase from 24.06 - 28.11% and 8.71 - 13.86 mm/s as the percentage replacement of SHA increases from 5 - 25%. The recorded compressive strength for all the mixtures was within the ACI acceptable specification (2-28 N/mm2). Increasing the contents of SHA significantly enhanced the porosity and permeability of PC, while the optimum compressive strength was obtained at 5%. The R2 of regression equations (0.90-0.99) indicates good correlations among the PC properties. It is concluded that SHA pozzolan and RCA are suitable for the production of PC for SUDS
Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 (Igf-2) Gene Associated W Ith Bodyweights Of Nigerian Locally Adapted Turkey
The Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 (IGF-2) gene was studied as a candidate gene for bodyweight of three turkey populations (Black, Spotted and White strains). The primer was designed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms of exon2 at the IGF-2 locus by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Co-dominant alleles A and B corresponding to genotypes AA, AB and BB were detected at the locus tested. No significant (P>0.05) associations were recorded for all the genotypes detected with bodyweights of the population utilized at weeks 3, 7, 9, 11 and 21 but bodyweights of homozygote BB genotypes across the three strains were higher than those of AA and AB genotypes. Significant differences (P0.05) association of different genotypes with bodyweight at other weeks were observed (P <0.05). The products amplified displayed polymorphism and the variation in exon2 of IGF-2 gene may be a molecular marker for superior growth in the turkey populations utilized
University of ibadan students' coping strategies during the deployed emergency remote teaching (UI-ERT)
This study assessed University of Ibadan students' coping strategies during the deployed Emergency Remote Teaching (UI-ERT) as a response to the Covid_19 pandemic. It became necessary to salvage the crisis of physical distancing and learning losses as result of the virus. ERT abdication came with new innovations which students found difficult to cope until. One of the major effects of ERT is psychological cum emotional stress. The aim of the study was to assess students' coping strategies during the deployment of UI-ERT. Richard Lazarus Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping (TTSC) explained that stress ns a product of a transaction between person (including multiple systems, cognitive, physiological neurological) and his or her complex environment. The study adopted a mixed method research design. The population of the study comprised all undergraduate students of the institution. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 275 respondents while two self-designed instruments; SPUI-ERT (r=0.931) SCSDUI-ERT (r=0.939) were used in data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, frequency count, standard deviation, and percentage as well as PPMC. Thematic analysis was also carried on the interview conducted. The result indicated that the UI students had a negative perception of Emergency Remote Teaching (UI-ERT). It also revealed that UI students employed different coping strategies during the deployment of UI-ERT. The study therefore recommended thorough sensitization and pre-training programmes before the redeployment of the platform in case of any eventuality in the future
Investigation of the effect of some salts on the rheological properties of xanthan gum and gum arabic present in a drilling fluid
The rheological properties of a drilling fluid are important because they allow for extensive examination of the viscosity, fluid flow profile, pressure loss, equivalent circulation density, and hole cleaning capability making it the foundation for all wellbore hydraulics. The viscosity, gel strength, and yield point of Gum Arabic and Xanthan Gum contained in a fresh water-based drilling fluid were investigated in the presence of three distinct salts: calcium chloride (CaCl2), potassium chloride (KCl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). The salts were introduced separately to three distinct fresh water-based drilling fluid samples in increasing weights. The Fann V-G viscometer was used for the required rheology properties measuring the RPM and gel strength. The plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, and yield point were calculated from the experimental data. With increasing the salt concentration, the plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, yield point, and gel strength all decreased, which was observed for all three salts used. Traditional medicine, in its rea context, is the totality o f the ancient manner and means o f restoring, preserving and protecting health. The objective is to sustain practices t at promote the wellbeing o f the people particularly, before the advent o f modem medicine . The approaches to the sustenance o f health as a social welfare paclcage for peoples are adapted from and to traditiona, religious beliefs and values o f each community, which are generationally transferred. Traditional medicine offers diverse areas o f specialisation which include herbal medicine, midwifery, and treatment o f infertility, mental healing and somatic therapy. This paper therefore unjacks the traditional psychotherapeutic context portrayed in J.P Clark's Song o f a Goat. Through descriptive qualitative research design and instrumentalities o f combination o f both traditional psychotherapy and behaviour therapy, the paper underscores the roles a traditional psychother pist plays among the Urhobo and Izon peoples ofN iger Delta, on family matters and the responses o f the clients portrayed under psycho-social a id cultural contexts. Influence of homestay, socio-economic status and computer literacy on undergraduates’ learning attitude during COVID-19 pandemic in the university of Ibadan
It is widely known that formal learning is best experienced in the confinement of classroom environment. Educational and other related activities were mopped together because of homestay induced by COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in remote teaching-learning mode and manipulations of computers and the internet which were alien to some undergraduates and lecturers. The study therefore, examined the influence of Homestay, Socio-Economic Status and Computer Literacy on Undergraduates' Learning Attitude during Covid-19 Pandemic's Induced “Pedagogical Restructuring’’ in the University of Ibadan. Ex-post facto design ofcross-sectional study and multi-stage sampling techniques guided the study. Five faculties, 20 departments, 30 Economics, 400 undergraduates and 30 teachers were randomly selected for the study. Three research questions and three validated instruments-Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (r = 0.85), Undergraduates' SocioEconomic Status and Computer Literacy Scale (r = 0.75), Attitude to Learning Scale (r = 0.70), were used in the study. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression at 0.05. Results revealed that most respondents experienced one psychological trauma during COVID-19 pandemic homestay. Further finding showed that independent variables were reliable predictors of undergraduates' attitude to learning during COVID-19 pandemic homestay (F(2.396) =9.470, p<0.005). Computer literacy made the highest contribution to the students' attitude to learning (β = 1.91, t = 3.815, p<0.05), followed by experiences of the undergraduates (β = .159, t = 3.174, p<0.05). The paper recommends that the University of Ibadan management should consider the socio-economic status of its undergraduates before advancing into individual differences', sensitive educational event such as adoption of online platforms during COVID-19 pandemic
Covid-19 and adult learning in Nigeria: can technology help? an exploration of adult literacy facilitators’ perspective
The outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact on learning globally cannot be overemphasized. Specifically, the pandemic severely affected adult learning and these further compounded issues bedeviling literacy promotion, especially in developing nations like Nigeria. This study assessed the impact of COVID-19 on adult learning and the place of technologies in facilitating adult learning in Nigeria. A qualitative research method through the lens of the interpretive paradigm was adopted for this study. The study is underpinned by the Theory of Andragogy and the Technology Acceptance Model. An in-depth interview with forty-six adult literacy facilitators across selected states in the country forms the participants of the study. The interview transcript was analyzed using a thematic framework. Findings revealed amongst others that COVID-19 impaired adult learning significantly in Nigeria. There exists a strong belief among literacy facilitators in the country that technologies can be used as an instructional delivery mechanism for learners in adult literacy programmes. Thus, radio, television, and mobile phone ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively among suggested technological tools to facilitate adult learning in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was suggested that there is a need for literacy stakeholders in the country to rethink adult literacy delivery modalities beyond the traditional approach. Also, it is suggested that enabling environment should be provided and familiar technologies such as radio, television and mobile phones should be used with adequate guidance and encouragement to improve learners’ access and participation in literacy programmes. While technology is not the silver bullet that will solve obstacles facing access to and participation in adult literacy programmes, there is a need to explore opportunities in the use of technologies to facilitate adult learning in Nigeria
Building Energy Simulation Model Application to Greenhouse Microclimate, Covering Material and Thermal Blanket Modelling: A Review
This review documents the present knowledge and knowledge gap in applying building energy simulation (BES) dynamic models to greenhouses. The focus of this review is to compile the literature on the BES dynamic model of greenhouse microclimate, covering materials, energy requirements and thermal blankets using the Transient System Simulation version 18 (TRNSYS 18) software. Fifty-two journal articles, mostly Science Citation Index (SCI) and Scopus index journals, on BES development and simulation of greenhouse microclimate, greenhouse energy requirement, covering materials and thermal blankets were reviewed. These researchers sought to optimise greenhouse crop production. The main features of the TRNSYS 18 software for BES development are outlined; each research consulted for this review successfully developed, simulated and validated its BES. However, none of these developed models included the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) as a greenhouse microclimate factor, an essential climate parameter. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that applying a BES developed using TRNSYS has excellent potential to optimise greenhouse crop production and help adapt appropriate climate control strategies and energysaving techniques. Social loafing among learner support staff for open and distance education programmes in south-western Nigeria: the imperative for counselling intervention
A descriptive survey design was adopted to investigate the relationship that exists amongst locus of control, work engagement, organizational reward system, job satisfaction and social loafing among the staff of distance learning programme in South-western Nigeria. Four hundred and forty-seven (males = 184; females = 263) learners support staff with an age range of 22 to 55 years were randomly drawn from open and distance learning universities located in South-western Nigeria. They responded to five standardised self report questionnaires. The results show that the majority (67.6%) of the respondents reported different forms of social loafing. There was a significant gender difference in the social loafing behaviour scores of male and female [t (445) = 0.773, p < 0.01]. Male respondents reported more social loafing behaviour (x? = 40.95) than their female counterparts (x = 25.48). There was a positive relationship between locus of control and social loafing though not significant. The relationship among job satisfaction, work engagements as well as reward system and social loafing were inverse. It concluded that personal and organisational factors predispose workers to social loafing. It is recommended that ODL management should also put in place better systems of reward practice and recognition. Counselling intervention is also required to reorient learner support staff who are loafers at OD institutions
Humans or machines? scientific determinism within the context of Yoruba human ontology
Pharos Journal of Theology 103, pp. 1-13Freewill has been a subject of intense study in the history of philosophy, this revolves around the debate that are humans free or are their actions determined? While there has been a lot of questions on the nature of human will, the search for answers remains relevant in contemporary studies as seen in the entrance of neuroscience to this quest. Neuroscience, in the study of the human will arrived at a conclusion based on empirical studies that freewill is an illusion because the human will is determined by cerebral activities. The discovery in the field of neuroscience therefore challenges the traditional belief about freewill and our beliefs that humans are in full control of their will. This submission indicated that human decisions for actions were initiated before humans became aware of them, that is, likening humans to machines, thereby creating a lacuna especially within the Yoruba religious and cultural contexts. This study therefore, interrogated the position of neuroscience on the human will by focusing on how scientific determinism can be viewed from the Yoruba worldview.
