DEVELOPMENT OF AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BASED SYSTEM FOR NUTRIENT DELIVERY TO GREENHOUSE GROWN CROPS

    Get PDF
Applying nutrients to crops either on the field or in a greenhouse has been a manual process, especially in developing countries where farmers or greenhouse attendants introduce nutrients based on intuition, or at specific intervals, not knowing exactly when a crop requires the said nutrients. This is one of many reasons why artificial intelligence has been introduced into the agricultural sector. This project was designed to develop an artificial intelligence-based system for the automatic delivery of nutrients to greenhouse-grown crops. The system was built with an Arduino microcontroller serving as the brain box of the system, a soil Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) sensor for reading nutrients level, an organic light-emitting diode which display. +he specific nutrient level in mg/kg, while a solenoid valve was incorporated into the delivery mechanism. T. e da*r was logged onto a secure digital (SD) card via SD module installed on the Arduino board. The microcontroller was configured to interpret the varied states of the soil as relayed by the soil sensor; and this involved data capture from NPK sensor, data processing to determine when to release nutrients, and delivery of nutrients if the solenoid valve is activated. The system was evaluated on soil whose nutrients were leached out, placed in a greenhouse, and the performance was satisfactor

The process of education is pivotal to the development of any society as no nation can rise beyond the level of her educational development. Curriculum is an important aspect of education; it determines the quality of educational System of any society. The Nigerian education System has suffered great setbacks due to the dysfunctional curriculum which it operates over the years. It has been established that effects of colonisation can still be felt in the Nigerian education sector which had continued to depend on the curriculum handed over from the colonial masters, which had rendered graduates of various institutions unqualified or 'half-baked' and unfit to meet the demands of their society. There has been economies underdevelopment as well as increased dependence on foreign technology. Previous researches have suggested modification of the curriculum as an antidote; however, this has not really yielded expected results due to poor commitment, perpetual change in policies and politicisation of educational decisions. This study adopted the method of philosophical discourse to examine the need to embark on decolonisation of the curriculum as a necessary means to resolve the situation and promote educational sustainability. The paper recommended that learning contents should be made to fit into the practical experiences of the Nigerian society; vocational skills should be inculcated into school activities/learning experiences, traditional values need to be promoted, while indigenous language should be employed alongside English language as modes of communication in schools to promote better understanding among learners

Substance consumption is a major issue that has taken a deep root in our society. This study examined the effect of substance consumption among commercial drivers in selected parks in Ibadan metropolis. The study employed a descriptive survey design and a multistage sampling technique was also used to select two modem parks at Ojoo and Challenge in Ibadan while simple random sampling was used to select 188 commercial drivers at the two parks. A structured questionnaire was used to gather information from the respondents. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage and frequency counts while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistical package was used to analyse the hypotheses. Findings revealed that the correlation between substance use and reasons for substance use was not significant but positive and low [0.068 (0.352)] which indicate that substances were taken on account of getting high and to remain awake while driving. Also, the correlation between substance use and implications for substance use was significant but negative and low [-0.228 (0.002)]. Findings also showed that the correlation between substance use and measures for eradicating substance use was not significant as well as negative and low [-0.101 (0.169] which means measures were not enforced by the government agency, hence, rules were not adhered to. The study recommends that government agency should develop a device for testing drivers who test positive to any substances, also, the state and local governments should enact laws and sanction any commercial drivers caught abusing substance

Social workers have an important role in the field of mental health, and social work programs have a responsibility to prepare students for practice in the field. However, it seems that various societies, groups and individuals have questioned the role of social workers in mental health. An increasing number of students entering university are identifying themselves as having mental health issues and those with higher levels of cumulative trauma tend to have more difficulty adjusting personally and emotionally to the transition, and abuse is linked to an increased probability of dropping out of collegeas well as to increased rates of depression and suicide. This paper examines the role of social workers in mental health and academic performance of students. Social workers have a key role in helping community participation and engagement, alongside other primary healthcare workers in delivering mental health support. It is recommended that activities such as case scenarios and role plays be used to prepare the student first, and that students be given the opportunity to practice these skills in actual practice settings as well. School authorities should not wait or watch till a student academic performance degrade totally before he or she is handed to a social worker with mental health experience. Periodic sessions should be organized by school authorities to gauge student mental stability from time to time to avoid any epidemic of mental breakdown which in tum affects their academic performance

In this study, three research questions were posed and addressed. This study adopted a survey research design. 250 masters' students that have undergone NYSC were randomly selected at the University of Ibadan. Three validated instruments were used to collect data for the study: NYSC's Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme Scale (ANYSCSAEDPS) (r = 0.76), Benefits and Challenges of NYSC's Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Questionnaire (BNYSCSAEQ) (r = 0.84). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that majority of the ex-corp members during NYSC's (SAED) Programme were exposed to educational skills, tourism and cosmetology, while few were exposed to horticulture and landscaping 15 (5.6 percent), power and energy 14 (9.6%), and automobile 8 (3.2 percent). The study also revealed that SAED was beneficial and very good for youth empowerment. It can therefore, be concluded that the SAED programme is beneficial to graduates' empowerment and the reduction of unemployment among youths, although its contribution to the development of entrepreneurial skills was not adequate enough due to some challenges facing its implementation. Consequently, the government should devote more attention to the programme by making resources available for its smooth implementation. Corps members should be re-oriented on the benefits of participating in SAED through their commitments when enlisting for entrepreneurship training during service, among other things
