    An ethical diagnosis of proverbs 6:6-8 about leadership failure in Nigeria

    The bane of growth in the nation's political trajectory has been caused by leadership failure and its impact on the populace. Once acknowledged and revered as Africa's developmental power house in all respects, Nigeria has lost its pride due to selfish leaders and avaricious followers who always prioritise their interests over the good of the whole. The process of motivating, directing, and persuading people to realise a common Vision, aim, or objective is known as leadership. A proactive approach, activity, or attitude that motivates and sways others to accomplish a particular objective is more important than a title. It is the capacity to guide and lead a team towards a goal successfully. Sadly, the Situation is the exact opposite in Africa, and Nigeria in particular, where the ruling elite has transformed the nation into a conduit through which our Commonwealth is being greedily siphoned for the benefit of themselves and their progeny. Scholarly works that have already been written about leadership in Nigeria have mostly focused on how Nigerian leaders have shaped the nation 's development since its independence, with little attention paid to the importance of Proverbs Chapter 6:6—8, which offers an ethical diagnosis of the social, political, and economic Problems arising from the nation's political leaders' incompetence, ignorance, carelessness, and irresponsibility. From a methodological standpoint, the research employed qualitative methods to gather data. According to the paper's results, leadership failure has caused the African continent to fall behind other developed nations, and the advice given by Solomon in Proverbs 6:6-8 can help address the region's plethora of issues and take her back to its Position as a giant of Africa indeed

    Exploring the emergence and impact of pentecostal movements in Nigeria

Political Economy, New Media, and Nigerian Popular Cultures, pp. 110-125From time immemorial, Christianity has played a pivotal role in the spiritual rejuvenation of its adherents. The spiritual renewal has positively impacted the country in all ramifications, especially the mainline churches that laid the foundation of Christianity on Nigerian soil. Existing studies on the contributions of Christianity to society have focused mainly on the spiritual and psychological effort of the mainline churches, with little attention paid to the emergence and the impact of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. The advent of Pentecostal movements in Nigeria, which began in the early 20th Century as a reform movement in the prominent churches of Africa, was a significant historical event. This paper adopts a historical method to elicit information on Pentecostal movements in Nigeria, bringing to the fore their historical context and interventions in the growth of African Christianity and their general influence on society. Our findings revealed that Pentecostal movements in Nigeria have, over the years, advanced the course of Christianity with their Creative liturgical ideas. Recommendations were made on how some excesses of Pentecostal churches would be put under check to ensure sanity in the movement

    Building Entrepreneurship Capacity of Adult Learners While Converting Literacy Education to Functional Literacy: A Case Study of Lift Above Poverty Alleviation Programme in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria

    The research examined the impact of microfinance intervention, specifically business and farming loans, on the quality of life of beneficiaries of the Lift Above Poverty Alleviation Programme in Ibadan Metropolis. Utilising a descriptive survey research design, the study included all programme beneficiaries, with a sample size of 200 individuals randomly chosen from four branches of the LAPO bank, including Sango, UI, Ojoo, and Iyana Church. Data collection was done using a 30-item questionnaire measuring the Poverty Alleviation Programmes of Lift Above Poverty Organisation’(PAPLAPOS) Scale (r=.84), which consisted of two subs-scales: Business Loan Scale (r=.83) and Farming Loan Scale (r=.85). The data collected were analysis through the descriptive statistics involving frequency counts, simple percentages, multiple regression, as well as mean and standard deviation. The results of the research indicated that the impact of the microfinance intervention (specifically Business and Farming loans) on the quality of life of the beneficiaries was statistically significant (F (2,148) = 111.425; R2 = .568), explaining 64.3% of the variance. In light of these findings, it is suggested that there is a necessity for microfinance initiatives focusing on enhancing basic and functional literacy to foster the advancement of entrepreneurship, development, and adult education practices in Nigeria

    Balancing the Grind: Social Media Entrepreneurship and Academic Success among Nigerian Undergraduates

    Economic challenges in Nigeria have prompted many undergraduate students to engage in social media entrepreneurship for financial sustainability. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram provide cost-effective business opportunities. While this entrepreneurship offers benefits, it raises concerns about its impact on academic performance, especially as students often multitask between business and studies. Grounded in the Uses and Gratifications Theory, this study investigated the relationship between social media entrepreneurship and the academic performance of undergraduates. A descriptive survey research design was employed, using a randomly selected sample of 200 students from five faculties: Education, Arts, Sciences, Law, and Social Sciences at the University of Ibadan. The instrument used for data collection was the Social Media Entrepreneurship and Academic Performance Questionnaire (SMEAPQ), which included structured items eliciting responses on the social media platforms used for entrepreneurial activities, the types of social media businesses engaged in, the influence of motivation on entrepreneurial engagement, and the impact on academic performance. The reliability of the questionnaire was established through a pilot test, yielding a coefficient of 0.75. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC), t-tests, and means were utilized. The findings revealed that undergraduates primarily use WhatsApp (X̄=3.59), Instagram (X̄=2.97), and Telegram (X̄=2.87) for entrepreneurial ventures, focusing on influencer marketing (X̄=3.31), web development/coding (X̄=3.24), affiliate marketing (X̄=3.19), and e-commerce (X̄=3.05). A significant positive relationship was found between undergraduate motivation and engagement in social media entrepreneurship (r=.222; p<0.05), aligning with the Uses and Gratifications Theory. Additionally, a significant positive association was observed between engagement in social media entrepreneurship and undergraduates’ academic performance (r=.236; p<0.05). The study revealed that female students had better engagement in social media businesses than male students (t(195) =-3.76; p<0.05). There is a need for targeted support to help students balance business and academics, in order to foster both financial independence and academic success

    Ebo (sacrifice) in Ifa religious tradition of the Yoruba, Southwestern Nigeria and its implications for public health

    Majalah Kesehatan Indonesia 6(1), pp. 27-34Ebo (sacrifice) is the feeding of spiritual entities such as gods, witches, and other energies believed to maintain equilibrium between the physical and spiritual worlds. It is an integral part of the Ifa divination system, a religious tradition in Yoruba society, southwestern Nigeria, which provides solutions to various problems. The materials for Ebo range from food items and animals to mineral and natural resources, including both living and nonliving things. Depending on the dictates of the Ifa oracle, Ebo can be offered at any time and placed in locations ranging from private spaces to public areas such as roadsides, rivers, gutters, or canals. Public reaction to the indiscriminate placement of Ebo is predominantly negative, except among practitioners or those offering it. This negativity stems from exposure to western education, foreign religions, and modern civilization. Common societal concerns include whether Ebo, beyond being an eyesore, contributes to air, water, and soil pollution, thus endangering public health. This paper aims to address the public health implications of Ebo placement. To explore these issues, interviews were conducted with 10 Babaláwo-Ifa priests, 10 men, and 10 women in Ibadan who had participated in offering Ebo. The content analysis of their responses revealed no consensus. Opponents of Ebo offerings cited speculative dangers, religious sentiments, and western education as factors shaping their views. This study highlights the complex interplay between traditional practices, modernity, and public health concerns, calling for further dialogue and solutions to mitigate potential risks

    Policy brief on educationally-less-developed-states as a criterion for selecting undergraduate admission candidates into Nigerian federal universities

    Interrogating data published by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over the period 2017 to 2023 we present quantitative, verifiable and objective assessment of addressing the question of equity and justice in the adoption of Educationally-Less-Developed-States (ELDS) as a criterion for the selection of candidates for admission into undergraduate programmes in Nigerian Federal Universities. Some of the 23 states on the current list of ELDS, in particular Kwara and Kogi, have posted excellent results and are now in the First Quartile justifying that they ought to be taken off the list. The same applies to Nasarawa which is in the Second Quartile. On the other hand, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory are in the Fourth Quartile and if the ELDS is to be retained both should be included in the list. The National Council on Education should take a closer look at this recommendation with a view to implementing same

    Dance theories and mmonwu performance tradition of the igbo people of nigeria

    Dance is a universal phenomenon that is as old as man and his desire to express himself, to communicate his joys and sorrows, to celebrate and to mourn with the most immediate instrument: his body. Nigerian dances like most African dances have been variously subjected to critical evaluation. However, most of the earlier critics have erroneously appreciated these dances from western dance experience and ideals. This has resulted in a problem of unholy generalization in theory and criticism of dance. Using the thematic analysis method, this study interrogates Spenser’s five theories of dance using Mmonwu Tradition of the Igbo. This is in order to enhance and enrich critical understanding and place of dance in African society. The study found that dance plays a major role in the functional, artistic and communal expression of the Mmonwu tradition among the Igbos of Nigeria. It is also recommended that scholars and writers should subject individual performance and tradition to critical analysis based on the nuances and particularities of that performance and tradition in order to avoid unwarranted generalizations in performance/culture appreciation and interpretation

    Empowering female teachers through health literacy, reproductive health and lifestyle modifications in Osun State, Nigeria

    The study investigated nexus among health literacy, reproductive health and lifestyle modifications among women of reproductive age in teaching profession in Osun State, Nigeria. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to selected one-hundred and eighty-six teachers. A self-designed instrument was used to elicit information from the participants. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools were explored to analyse the generated data. The findings of the research demonstrated a moderate positive association between health literacy and reproductive health of women of reproductive age in teaching profession. The study further revealed a significant relationship between lifestyle modifications and reproductive health among women of reproductive age in the teaching profession. The findings indicated that the top strategies included simplifying health information using plain language, providing training for healthcare providers, and using visual aids like diagrams, pictures, and videos. Other notable strategies included offering reproductive health services and counselling, providing access to accurate information, and promoting physical activity, healthy eating habits, stress management, and healthy sleep habits. The study concluded that health literacy, reproductive health and lifestyle modifications of women of reproductive age go a long way in enhancing their well-being and overall effectiveness in teaching profession. Policymakers and health educators should promote and support lifestyle modification programs that empower women teachers to make informed choices about their reproductive health

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised teachers of public secondary schools in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The data used for the research was generated from six secondary schools in which 120 teachers were drawn randomly from the schools. The instrument used was the Teacher's Perception on the Challenges of School Management Questionnaire. Analysis was done using frequency count, percentage, and histogram. The outcomes show that poor teacher remuneration is the most prominent challenge from the teacher’s perspective. Finding a solution to the research outcome through school management, collaboration with government agencies and teamwork is the main solution to the challenges of school management. Based on the research outcomes, it was deduced that poor remuneration is the most prominent teachers ’perspective The recommendation was that the school administrators should solve the problems faced in the area of human and material resources. Besides, the government at all levels and non-governmental organizations are strongly encouraged to make funds available for the smooth running of the school
