Operational Risks Faced by Financial Institutions in the Digital Age: A Case of Nigeria
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine operational risks faced by financial institutions in the digital age: a case of Nigeria.
Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries.
Findings: The study found that financial institutions in Nigeria are confronted with a myriad of operational risks in the digital age, stemming from the rapid adoption of technology and the evolving cyber threat landscape. The shift towards digital banking and fintech innovations has introduced new vulnerabilities, including cyberattacks, data breaches, and fraudulent activities, posing significant challenges to the security and integrity of financial systems in Nigeria. Operational risks associated with technological disruptions, such as system failures, IT outages, and disruptions to digital payment platforms, can undermine the reliability and efficiency of financial services, leading to customer dissatisfaction and financial losses. The proliferation of mobile banking and digital payment channels has heightened concerns about financial inclusion, data privacy, and regulatory compliance, necessitating robust risk management frameworks and regulatory oversight to safeguard the stability and resilience of Nigeria\u27s financial sector.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Agency Theory & Resource Dependence Theory may be used to anchor future studies on operational risks faced by financial institutions in the digital age: a case of Nigeria. Financial institutions should prioritize the implementation of robust cybersecurity measures, including regular security audits, penetration testing, and employee training programs. By enhancing cybersecurity awareness and preparedness, institutions can mitigate the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches. Regulatory authorities play a crucial role in shaping the regulatory landscape to address operational risks in the Digital Age. Policymakers should collaborate with industry stakeholders to develop robust regulatory frameworks that promote innovation while safeguarding financial stability and consumer protection
Effect of Climate Change on Risk Management Practices in Agriculture in Switzerland
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of climate change on risk management practices in agriculture in Switzerland.
Findings: The impact of climate change on risk management practices in Swiss agriculture has become increasingly significant. Farmers in Switzerland are facing heightened risks due to more frequent and severe weather events, such as droughts, floods, and temperature extremes. These changes have led to a greater emphasis on adaptive strategies, including diversified cropping, improved irrigation techniques, and the adoption of climate-resilient crop varieties. Additionally, there is an increased reliance on agricultural insurance and government-supported risk management programs to mitigate financial losses.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Theory of resilience, adaptive management theory & climate risk management theory may be used to anchor future studies of climate change on risk management practices in agriculture in Switzerland. Practically, there is a need for the development and implementation of tailored risk management strategies that address region-specific challenges and opportunities. Policy frameworks must be updated to support effective climate change adaptation in agriculture. Governments and policy-makers should develop and implement policies that promote the adoption of climate-smart practices and provide financial and technical support to farmers
Impact of Regulatory Changes on Financial Market Stability in Germany
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the impact of regulatory changes on financial market stability in Germany.
Findings: The impact of regulatory changes on financial market stability in Germany has been significant, contributing to a more resilient financial system. Stricter regulations, particularly after the 2008 financial crisis, have enhanced risk management practices, increased capital requirements for banks, and improved transparency in financial transactions. These measures have reduced systemic risks and bolstered investor confidence, helping to maintain market stability even during periods of economic uncertainty. However, the increased regulatory burden has also posed challenges for financial institutions, leading to higher compliance costs and adjustments in business strategies to meet new standards.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Theory of financial regulation, adaptive market hypothesis (AMH) & the institutional theory may be used to anchor future studies of the impact of regulatory changes on financial market stability in Germany. Practically, financial institutions and market participants need to adapt to evolving regulatory environments with robust risk management and compliance strategies. Policymakers should ensure that regulatory frameworks are designed to promote financial stability while accommodating the needs of financial institutions
