The Impact of Exceptional Governance Measures on Democracy and Legal System
Get PDFThe exercise of exceptional power has long been at the centre of debate, as the process involves essentially breaking away from normality and giving political leader(s), especially the executive, almost unlimited power. Particularly in periods of constitutionalism and under liberal democracies based on checks and balances, when the principle of the separation of powers is temporarily ‘switched off’ for the time needed to avert an exceptional event, this leads to significant problems. This paper, after clarifying the theoretical starting points, will discuss in a historical context the authoritarian tendencies inherent in executive power that emerged within the history of ideas and politics in the 20th century in relation to the problem of constitutional dictatorship and which have today taken shape in the transformation of philosophies of government – namely, into a kind of permanent crisis-management philosophy of government. Furthermore, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the literature is reviewed to address the democratic problems associated with exceptional governance. The main question underlying this analysis is whether exceptional governance affects democracy and legal systems and what tools and methods can be used to check the authoritarian nature of the executive in a state of exception
From Authorial Kinship to Imaginative Sovereignty: Analysing the Influence of Samuel Beckett on Paul Auster’s Texts
Get PDFDuring his early years, Paul Auster wrote three plays: Blackouts (1976), Hide and Seek (1976), and Laurel and Hardy Go to Heaven (1976/77). Those works, however, are still little known to the general public or to literary criticism. The play Laurel and Hardy Go to Heaven exhibits close similarities to the dramatic works of Samuel Beckett, who strongly influenced Auster’s development as a writer. This paper aims to reflect on the peculiar position of the play in Auster’s oeuvre and to highlight its significance by tracing the arc of his creative maturation, in order to substantiate how Auster adopted Beckett’s texts into his own writings, overcoming the anxiety of influence and discovering his authorial voice

Get PDFThe focus of this study is the empirical investigation of the polarity sensitivity of vagy, the Hungarian function word expressing disjunction. The results of previous experimental literature regarding the presumed positive polarity sensitivity of disjunction-encoding elements in Hungarian and several other languages paint a somewhat contradictory picture. In our acceptability experiment we show that while two ‘classical’ positive polarity elements of the same subclass, namely indefinite noun phrases introduced by the singular indefinite article egy and indefinite vala-pronouns, are indeed more or less unacceptable in the logical scope of clause-mate sentential negation, the disjunction marker is merely of mildly reduced acceptability in the same setting. This result suggests that there is substantial heterogeneity in positive polarity sensitivity, which may correspond to inherent differences in the reasons for the polarity sensitivity of the individual elements.Tanulmányunk fókuszában a magyar nyelv diszjunkciót kifejező funkciószava, a vagy polaritás érzékenységének empirikus vizsgálata áll. A diszjunkciót kódoló elemek feltételezett pozitív polaritás érzékenységéről a korábbi kísérletes szakirodalom eredményei némileg ellentmondásos képet festenek mind a magyarban, mind számos más nyelvben. Elfogadhatósági kísérletünkben kimutatjuk, hogy míg a vagy-gyal azonos alosztályba sorolható két „klasszikus” pozitív polaritású elemtípus - az egy határozatlan névelővel bevezetett főnévi szintagmák és a határozatlan vala-névmások - valóban többé-kevésbé elfogadhatatlanok velük azonos tagmondatban álló mondattagadás logikai hatókörében, addig a vagy ugyanebben a környezetben inkább csak mérsékelten csökkent elfogadhatóságú. Ez az eredmény a pozitív polaritás érzékenység jelentős heterogenitására utal, mely mögött akár az egyes elemek polaritás érzékenységének kiváltó okai közötti lényegi eltérések is húzódhatnak
A filozófiai praxis mint életvezetési-tanácsadói tevékenység
Get PDFBackground and Aims: In this paper, I present philosophical praxis, its most important types, interpretative possibilities, and forms of manifestation. Given the complexity of the subject, I do not aim to be exhaustive, but rather to illustrate the foundations (and main directions) by which philosophical praxis can be situated among life coaching and counselling activities (whether individual counselling or group retreats). The timeliness of the topic is underlined by the many recent book publications and movements that seek to make philosophy relevant again and integrate it into people’s everyday lives. This approach interprets philosophy as a spiritual practice, a way of life, or even a therapy which, by its very tradition, appears capable of helping individuals pose new questions and discover alternative ways of approaching a given situation. It also seems capable of prompting introspection, self-education, self-awareness and contemplation. Last but not least, the very act of learning, understanding and practising different philosophical concepts can contribute to a higher quality of life and greater happiness. Philosophical practice does not stop there, however, as there are also institutionalised forms, of which individual and group philosophical counselling or consultation are the most noteworthy. I describe the main ‘movements’ associated with these activities, their history and the criticisms levelled against them. My methodology relies primarily on theoretical synthesis and philosophical analysis. I conclude that philosophical practice, like mental health care or literary therapy, has a legitimate place among counselling activities, but that there is a need for active postgraduate training in this area and for an organisation, association or society that takes this approach.Háttér és célkitűzések: Jelen tanulmányomban a filozófiai praxist, annak legfontosabb fajtáit, értelmezési lehetőségeit és megnyilvánulási formáit mutatom be. Tekintettel a téma sokrétűségére, nem teljességre törekszem, inkább azt kívánom szemléltetni, hogy milyen alapokkal (és főbb irányokkal) rendelkezik a filozófiai praxis ahhoz, hogy helye legyen az életvezetési és tanácsadói tevékenységek között (beszéljünk akár egyéni tanácsadásról vagy csoportos elvonulásról). A téma időszerűségét alátámasztja az a rengeteg, ehhez kapcsolódó könyvmegjelenés és mozgalom, amely a filozófiát megpróbálja újra fontossá, a hétköznapi élet részévé tenni. Ez a fajta megközelítés lelkigyakorlatként, életmódként, esetleg terápiaként interpretálja a filozófiát, amely – hagyományánál fogva – valóban alkalmasnak tűnik arra, hogy segítsen új kérdéseket feltenni, és más megközelítési módokat találni egy adott szituációban. Alkalmasnak tűnik továbbá arra is, hogy önvizsgálatra, önnevelésre, önismeretre és kontemplációra késztesse az embert. Nem utolsósorban pedig már magának a különböző filozófiai koncepcióknak a megismerése, megértése és gyakorlása is egy magasabb minőségű, boldogabb élethez vezethet. A filozófiai praxis azonban nem merül ki ennyiben, hiszen vannak intézményesült formái is, melyek között elsőként az egyéni és csoportos filozófiai tanácsadást vagy konzultációt érdemes kiemelni. Írásomban bemutatom az ezekkel a tevékenységekkel kapcsolatos fontosabb „mozgalmakat”, azok történetét és a velük szemben felhozott kritikákat. A témából adódóan módszereim között az elméleti összefoglaló és a filozófiai elemzés dominál. Arra jutok, hogy a filozófiai praxisnak – ahogyan például a mentálhigiénés gondozásnak vagy az irodalomterápiának – helye van a tanácsadói tevékenységek között, szükség lenne azonban ilyen irányú aktív posztgraduális képzésekre, illetve olyan szervezetre, egyesületre vagy társaságra, amely ezt a szemléletet képviseli

No full textMária Herczog writes about the importance and significance of primary child welfare services in a broad sense (including health, education and social and other services) cannot be overestimated in ensuring the welfare and well-being of children and the implementation of their rights. The provision of various services is a state obligation in Hungary, guaranteed in principle by legislation, reinforced by professional protocols to facilitate their application. In practice, however, they are not available, or only to a very limited extent, to a significant proportion of children, without any consequences or accountability. No full textThis publication presents, with introduction and notes, a late antique Graeco-Egyptian magical papyrus (P. Louvre 2391) containing a curse recipe directed, among others, against charioteers. A notable feature of the text is the central role of the cat, whose body, soul, and energy are employed in a strikingly diverse range of ritual functions. The introduction places particular emphasis on the editor’s markings preserved in the manuscript—features previously unexamined—that provide rare insight into the process of recording the recipe. With its full translation and commentary, this is the first time the text has been made accessible to a Hungarian readership.A bevezetővel és jegyzetekkel ellátott szövegközlés egy késő ókori graeco-egyiptomi mágikus papirusz (P. Louvre 2391) átokreceptjét tárja az olvasó elé, amely többek között egy fogathajtók ellen irányuló rituálét mutat be. A szöveg egyik különlegessége, hogy a szertartás központi elemét, a macskát a szakember rendkívül sok módon felhasználja (testét, lelkét, energiáját). Get PDFThe complete correspondence between Martin Buber and Károly Kerényi, exchanged between 1947 and 1963, is presented in Hungarian translation, accompanied by an introductory essay and detailed annotations. Through this series of letters, a unique intellectual and emotional relationship is revealed, shaped by the postwar years, political disillusionment, emigration, and the experience of life in a chosen homeland. Particular emphasis is placed on their reflections concerning myth, religion, humanism, and Jungian psychoanalysis. The exchange is interpreted as a significant document of mid-twentieth-century European thought. The letters are contextualized by a critical apparatus that highlights their philosophical and historical relevance, and by a preface that explores the possibilities and limitations of dialogue in the shadow of historical crisis. Making this material accessible in Hungarian provides a rare testimony for readers interested in intellectual history, Jewish thought, and the modern legacy of classical antiquity.A publikáció magyar fordításban, jegyzetekkel és bevezető tanulmánnyal kísérve teszi hozzáférhetővé Martin Buber és Kerényi Károly teljes levelezését, amely 1947 és 1963 között zajlott. A levélváltás egyedülálló szellemi és érzelmi kapcsolatot tár fel, amely a második világháború utáni időszak, a politikai kiábrándultság, az emigráció, illetve a választott hazában való újrakezdés tapasztalatai mentén bontakozik ki. Különös hangsúlyt kapnak azok a kérdések, amelyek a mítoszhoz, a valláshoz, a humanizmushoz és a jungi pszichoanalízishez fűződő viszonyukat jellemzik. A levelezés így a 20. századi európai gondolkodás egyik fontos dokumentumaként értelmezhető. Get PDFThis article explores early Christian views of nature through the lenses of ecotheology and eco-aesthetics, focusing in particular on depictions of marine animals—moray eel, crab, and octopus—in the writings of the Church Fathers. The author argues that in patristic texts, nature is not merely a background for allegorical interpretation but carries its own theological and aesthetic significance. Observations and metaphors involving specific creatures serve not only moral instruction but also as expressions of divine order and beauty in creation. Special attention is given to the interplay between curiosity about the natural world and theological reflection, offering insights into how ancient Christian literature may enrich contemporary ecological thinking.A tanulmány az ókeresztény szerzők természetszemléletét vizsgálja ökoteológiai és ökoesztétikai szempontból, különös tekintettel a tengeri élőlények – muréna, rák, polip – ábrázolására. A szerző amellett érvel, hogy az egyházatyák szövegeiben a természet nem csupán allegorikus háttérként, hanem önálló teológiai és esztétikai jelentéshordozóként van jelen. A konkrét élőlényekre vonatkozó megfigyelések és hasonlatok nemcsak erkölcsi tanításokat közvetítenek, hanem a világ Isten által teremtett szépségének és rendjének kifejezői is. A kortárs norvég képregények fordításának jellegzetességei
Get PDFA dolgozat célja, hogy bemutassa a norvég képregények fordításának sajátos körülményeit, és javaslatokat tegyen a fordítóknak a felmerülő nehézségek leküzdésére. A kutatás szövegkorpuszát a Pondus című norvég képregény hét füzete adja, melyeket átvizsgálva négy nagyobb kategóriát különítek el. Ezeket sorban egymás után jellemzem, majd a szakirodalom, valamint a személyes gondolataim segítségével fordítói stratégiákat és konkrét javaslatokat fogalmazok meg a megoldásukra vonatkozóan. A kutatás eredményeképp megfogalmazható, hogy a képregények beszélt nyelvi jellege kihangsúlyozza azokat az elemeket, melyek egy nyelv beszélt nyelvi változatát jellemzik, a norvég esetében pedig ez lehet a magyarázat az angol kifejezések gyakori használatára
