This paper examines the three primary Chinese translations of the Buddhāvataṃsaka-sūtra— an extensive Mahāyāna text foundational to the Huayan School during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. This study provides a comprehensive introduction to each translation, tracing its dissemination across China, and further investigates the contributions and legacy of the five patriarchs of the Huayan School. As Buddhism became increasingly secular and accessible, there was a significant rise in literary creativity, notably in the form of miraculous story collections that aided in the propagation of Buddhist beliefs among the general populace. These narratives, often embellished with supernatural elements, were crafted to demonstrate the efficacy of Buddhist practice, with the aim of fostering faith and devotion. Known as ’stimulus-response’ stories (ganying 感應), these accounts illustrate the power of Buddhist practice through the depiction of miraculous events. This paper reviews nine key collections associated with the Huayan jing, including: Record of the Transmission of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Huayanjing Zhuanji 華嚴經傳記), Account of Stimuli and Responses Related to the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Dafangguang fo huayanjing ganying zhuan 大方廣佛華嚴經感應傳), Account of the Search for the Profundities of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Huayanjing tanxuan ji 華嚴經探玄記), Commentary on the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Dafangguang fo huayanjing shu 大方廣佛華嚴經疏), Sub-commentary on the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Dafangguang fo huayan sui shu yanyi chao 大方廣佛華嚴經隨疏演義抄), Account of Chengguan’s Commentary on the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Huayan xuantan huixuan ji 華嚴懸談會玄記), Short Record of Accounts of Stimuli and Responses Related to the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Dafangguang fo huayanjing ganying lüeji 大方廣佛華嚴經感應略記), and Causes of Stimuli and Response Related to the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Huayanjing ganying yuanqi zhuan 華嚴經感應緣起傳), as well as the Chronological Account of the Efficacies of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra (Lichao huayanjing chiyan ji 歷朝華 嚴經持驗紀). Through this analysis, the paper aims to deepen understanding of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, its miraculous stories, and the collections that preserved these narratives, enriching appreciation for its impact on Chinese Buddhism. This paper examines the three primary Chinese translations of the Buddhāvataṃsaka-sūtra— an extensive Mahāyāna text foundational to the Huayan School during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Mongol rule in China stands as a remarkable example of the amalgamation of two distinct cultures—one sedentary and one agricultural. The progression of the Mongol conquest in both northern and southern China warrants special attention. Initially, the Mongol campaigns in northern China (1211–1234) were marked by excessive cruelty, city destruction, the conversion of lands into pastures, and the displacement of the conquered population. However, this strategy proved to be unproductive, yielding minimal benefits for the Mongols. The strategic proposal presented by Yelü Chucai (1189–1243), an adviser to Genghis Khan (Mong. Činggis qaγan, Temüǰin 1162–1227) and Ögedei Khan (Mong. Ögedei qaγan, 1186–1241), compelled the conquerors to reassess their subsequent plans. During the reign of the Mongols in China, the population was divided into four groups: the Mongols, the semu 色目, the northern Chinese, and the southern Chinese. The ethnic hierarchy during the Yuan Dynasty was a structured system that categorised the population into distinct classes, primarily to facilitate governance and maintain social order within the diverse and vast empire. This hierarchy had significant implications for the social, political, and economic life of the people under the Mongol rule. Moreover, the Mongols created their own centralised administrative system, which mostly excluded the Chinese from key government positions. The Chinese were often assigned to minor positions or given fewer opportunities for promotion. This study delves into the traits of the four-class system and the Mongol administrative system in China. Yang Zhu: a mindennapi élet dicsérete – a „hírnév” (ming 名) elítélése; „név” (ming 名) és „valóság” (shi 實) viszonya

As an introduction, the paper examines the authenticity of Yang Zhu’s figure and the Yang Zhu. Speaking about Mozi and Yang Zhu, Mengzi says that their ‘evil doctrines will dupe the people and obstruct humanness [ren 仁] and righteousness [yi 義]’ and that ‘Yang Zhu is “for oneself” [weiwo 為我]’ (Mengzi IIIB14, Van Norden’s translation slightly altered). The Chinese tradition is against Yang Zhu based on this statement. The key term of weiwo 為我 that appears in solely one part of the Mengzi linked with Yang Zhu’s figure is generally labelled in Sinology as ‘egoistic’, ‘selfish’, or ‘hedonistic’—concepts that are not applicable in the examination of Chinese thought. While Yang Zhu showed none of the mentioned characteristics, it was a major novelty in the history of Chinese thought that he ‘discovered the body (shen 身)’ and advocated that man is a person (shen 身) and thus can decide about himself. His teachings are attacked with good reason by both Confucians and Mohists, as well as later by the Legalists, since similarly to Zhuangzi he considered governing the ‘realm below heaven’ superfluous and thus unnecessary, as life is worth living in its everyday-like nature. He held the view that in reality, the sphere of small-community, family life, and everyday life must have priority. For that reason, all Confucian and Mohist benchmarks are basically incorrect in terms of one’s own needs. A central idea/suggestion of the Yang Zhu is to lead a life that one wishes to lead, where life is, as he advocated, irreconcilable with ‘fame’ (ming 名). Concerning the central importance of ‘fame’ for the elite, Yang Zhu’s standpoint strongly opposed that of Confucians as he considered it particularly undesirable. Based on original sources, I argue that an intellectual current of ‘Yangism’ did not exist and that such interpretations stem from misunderstandings of modern Chinese approaches and European Sinology. In reality, Yang Zhu was a lone thinker of ancient Chinese thought. He opposed both Confucians, grounding their views in the elite and Mohists trying to involve commoners in organising society by criticising both ideological approaches, considering as decisive the basic given features of human life. This ‘model’ of leading one’s life that, unlike other streams of thought, did not produce a systematic teaching could not have had a long-lasting effect on ancient Chinese thought. Ennek alapján támadja a kínai hagyomány Yang Zhu-t.

A lefordíthatatlan elemek fordíthatóságának kérdése Sŏ Chŏngju dél-koreai költő Hwasa című versén keresztül

The difficulty of literary translation has been the subject of numerous studies. Regardless of the angle from which they examine the relationship between the source and target texts, their conclusions often point to the impossibility of literary translation. The problem is often caused by what Jieun Kaier, in his 2022 book on the translation of Korean poetry into English, calls ‘invisibles’. These are usually culture-specific elements or characteristics of the source text that, due to the difficulty of translating them, often do not appear in the target text, hence their name. Such ‘invisible’ elements may include, for example, onomatopoeia, realia, or dialects. In prose translations, these features can be addressed with the help of explanatory inserts or footnotes, but in poetry translations, there are no such possibilities, which makes the translator’s task even more difficult. The study aims to give insight into the translation of the ‘invisible’, focusing on realia and dialects, and to present possible translation methods, using a specific poem as an example. The work examined in this study is the poem Hwasa by 20th-century South Korean poet Sŏ Chŏngju. This poem is an optimal choice not only because the realia and dialects appearing in the text make it difficult to translate into other languages but also because, although it is taken from the poet’s most important volume, which is a seminal work of modern Korean poetry, a Hungarian translation of the poem has not previously been published. The study introduces various definitions of realia and the translation strategies aimed at addressing them. It then examines the issue of dialect translation by introducing the standardisation of the Korean and Hungarian languages and dialectal literature in the two countries. This research shows that while the issue of the translatability of realia is a relatively often discussed topic, the number of studies on the translation of dialectal poetry is notably scarce. This paper presents two possible Hungarian translations of the poem, illustrating two different methods for translating dialectal poetry. The study thus makes a new contribution to the corpus of Korean literature translated into Hungarian while also presenting the factors influencing the translation, the translation difficulties arising from the peculiarities of the source text, and possible solutions.

Upper Palaeolithic site complex at Csécse-Szőlős-domb (Cserhátalja, Nógrád County, Northern Hungary): Preliminary results

    No full text
This paper presents the find material of a new open-air Upper Palaeolithic site located on the outskirts of Csécse in Cserhátalja, between the Zagyva River and the Szuha Stream. Its topographic position is similar to other Upper Palaeolithic sites in the Cserhát Mountains. Part of the finds were collected by agronomist László Tóth, while the rest were found by the authors later, following the rediscovery of the site in 2017. The appearing raw materials are primarily limnic silicites of Cserhát origin and local siliceous pebbles, accompanied by a low proportion of erratic flint (absent from known Late Middle Palaeolithic lithic industries characterised by leaf-shaped forms); in contrast, the metarhyolite characteristic of said industries is completely absent from the site. The assemblage gives the impression of a flake industry, as blades and blade tools are present in low proportions. The predominant type is end-scrapers with a significant proportion of high-nosed and carenoid Aurignacian variants. Bifacial tools are completely absent, and the proportion of side-scrapers is low. The significance of the assemblage—rich in end-scrapers and relying mainly on local raw materials—lies in that it likely represents an early Aurignacian facies otherwise not known from the Northern Hungarian Mountains. Its further investigation by excavation would be important
