    No full text
The present study evaluates the impact of the dam construction on land use and land cover (LULC) pattern of the Bakreswar Watershed in the Birbhum District, West Bengal, India during 1990-2020. Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI data were used to analyze the LULC pattern during the pre- and post-dam construction periods. Supervised image classification using the maximum likelihood algorithm was done to generate LULC and change detection maps in ArcGIS. LULC dynamic attitude and transfer matrix were prepared based on the LULC maps of four years. The results show that the dam construction significantly influenced the LULC pattern of the region. The highest rate of increase is seen in waterbody (86.37%) during 1990–2000 due to dam construction. Cultivated land also increased by 12.31% during this period. After the dam construction, the conversion rate from fallow land to cultivated land is higher in the downstream area rather than the upstream area. The area under barren land decreased by 53.28% in 1990–2000 and by 41.23% during 2009–2020 due to its conversion to built-up area. The built-up area rapidly increased during the past 20 years, by 34.57% and 45% during 1990–2000 and 2009-2020, respectively. Major change is seen along the Panagarh–Morgram Highway which connects two urban centers, Suri and Dubrajpur. Settlement concentration is also high around the Bakreswar Thermal Power Plant (BkTPP) and BkTPP Township. This study provides a useful approach to understanding the impacts of dam construction on cultivated area change and how transportation facility influences urban agglomeration

    No full text
Maize (Zea mays) is a key staple crop essential for global food security, with its productivity heavily influenced by soil, nutrient, and fertiliser management. This review examines the requirements for optimal maize production by analysing recent literature on soil properties, nutrient uptake, and fertilisation practices. A systematic approach was used to gather relevant studies from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on peer-reviewed articles, books, and conference proceedings published in the last 10 years. Keywords such as “maize soil requirements” and “nutrient management for maize” guided the search, and both global and region-specific research were included to capture diverse agricultural systems and environments. Key insights were extracted to understand best practices, challenges, and technological advancements influencing maize yield. The findings provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on soil and nutrient management for maize cultivation, highlighting optimal practices and emerging trends in fertilisation techniques. The review aims to support improved management strategies for yield maximisation and sustainable maize production across various agricultural landscapes, ensuring food security in the face of changing environmental conditions

Survey on termite prevalence and management strategies in eastern Uganda

    No full text
Termites are among the most destructive maize pests worldwide. A significant amount of research has been conducted on termites in Uganda but information on the incidence of termites is rarely updated. However, termite incidence, and associated perceptions in different geographical areas is important for development of sustainable control strategies. Therefore, this study was conducted to ascertain the prevalence of termites in Eastern Uganda and the possible ways to control their damage to crops. Data was collected from 272 respondents using face to face interviews following a questionnaire in the nine districts of Pallisa, Mayuge, Manafwa, Bugiri, Butaleja, Sironko, Kapchorwa, Bukwo and Luuka. Results showed that termite prevalence was very high in all districts with some recording 100%. Termites belonging to Macrotermes spp. predominantly affected maize. Mixed responses were recorded on cropping system effect on termite infestation implying that respondents couldn’t tell easily whether the cropping system reduced/increased termite attack. Percentage lodging due to termite attack was significantly higher (P=0.026) in late planted maize. The most dominant termite control strategy among the maize farmers was use of chemicals. Close to 50% of the respondents had never received any information on termites prevalence and management. Therefore, the study recommends more sensitization of farmers on management of termites with emphasis on cost effective and environmentally friendly management practices especially integrated termite control

    No full text
The global scale, changing fashion industry can be characterised with low predictability, high volatility, seasonality, short life cycle products and highly impulse consumer purchasings decisions, addressing ethical and sustainability matters. Fashion as generic collecting name can be defined as styles of clothing and accessories worn at any time by different groups of people. One of the main opportunity and challenge for this complex, multi actors sector introducing digital solutions, which can provide significant contribution of restructuring the supply chains, optimising the production techniques, reducing its negative environmental externalities supporting the future sustainability. Possible reason beyond this digitization trend can be changing consumer attitudes and expectations. Majority of consumers have tendency using digital channels before, during and after their purchase, so fashion brands have to take into consideration this new reality. The convenience and accessibility of online enjoyable shopping opportunities have reshaped consumer expectations including personalized recommendations, and user-friendly online social media platforms (video channels, websites, mobile apps, and secure payment systems). Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest have transformed the way fashion brands communicate and connect with their audience creating loyal social network. Digital transformation requires more than just implementing new technologies; it necessitates a cultural shift within fashion brands. Case study of the NUDE Project analysing its challenges and main competitors as well, can serve as an illustrative example how can the digital communication tools contribute to the fashion brand future success and prosperity

Optimization of Parking Lot Stormwater Management: a Case Study

    No full text
As urbanization accelerates, parking lots lead to stormwater runoff and localized flooding due to impervious layers and inefficient drainage. This case study evaluates stormwater management strategies across four parking lots in Debrecen, Hungary, to propose effective retrofitting solutions. The methodology combines visual site assessments with a comparative analysis of global best practices identified in the literature. Findings suggest integrating Green Infrastructure (GI) and Low Impact Development (LID) principles into parking lot design can enhance infiltration and significantly reduce surface runoff. Key recommendations include utilizing nearby vegetated depressions and replacing conventional concrete slabs with permeable surfaces. Beyond the flood avoidance, these strategies aim to reduce pressure on the local sewer system and minimize puddle formation

BRAIN DRAIN AND ITS REPERCUSSIONS ON THE NEEDS OF THE PALESTINIAN LABOR MARKET: A STUDY OF THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF MIGRATION AMONG EDUCATED YOUTH

    Get PDF
This study examines the consequences of the outflow of young people from the occupied territories for the Palestinian labor market. This phenomenon is labeled a "drain" because it deprives the area of many educated individuals needed for its development. Commonly discussed as a political issue and as a consequence of war, the problem is often not addressed as an economic issue. Moreover, emigration exacerbates the population problem as young females and males leave the area for neighboring states and seek permanent sanctuary in them. When this group is not present to aid in the process of internal development, the investment in their education is lost. In all areas of the world, one may observe graduations from universities and other institutions leading to the majority of proficient students leaving or attempting to leave to assume responsible positions. This exodus constitutes a serious problem for the donor country in the sense of its youth development, and a serious problem for the recipient country deprived of the services of these skilled graduates. The total "drain" of the talented becomes an important economic problem. The outflow of trained individuals is not unique to Palestine; therefore, similar serious situations are prevalent in many developing countries, particularly those situated in proximity to concentrations of wealth. The magnitude of the Palestinian outflow, however, has not previously been demonstrated. The analysis of Palestine's probable situation was accepted reluctantly, as many information sources refused or were too cautious to share statistics related to this study. The specific objective of the analysis is to present these and related statistics. The concern in this paper is with the consequences of the phenomenon and the associated costs in disutility. There are other consequences and costs, all of which are important

As part of a grant-funded inclusion program, we conducted a lifestyle survey and needs assessment among 241 individuals of Roma identity in Hajdúböszörmény. This study included the WHO’s five-item well-being questionnaire. The study also provides an overview of well-being research in Hungary. Based on our research findings, we believe patterns from previous generations for families raising young children can be a source of strength, even in role model selection. In contrast, for families not currently raising young children, a sense of trust in the future can contribute to higher well-being levels among those living in segregated areas. We found that raising young children is generally associated with a higher level of well-being, which can be further reinforced by younger age, higher educational attainment, stable work income with optimal workload, and the location of the residence. We emphasize that promoting well-being requires a holistic approach, broad social cooperation, and a more equitable system that balances opportunities. Our research helps to understand the multifaceted nature of well-being, contributing to the identification of challenges and the search for solutions.Pályázati felzárkóztató program keretében 241 fő roma identitású személy körében végeztünk életmódvizsgálatot és igényfelmérést Hajdúböszörményben, amelynek keretében került felvételre a WHO 5 tételből álló jóllétvizsgáló kérdéssora is. A tanulmány kitekintést tesz a magyarországi jóllét kutatásokra is.

This paper aims to explore how indigenous communities in Indonesia play an important role in environmental management based on local wisdom that has been passed down through generations. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data for this study were obtained through a literature review. The method employed is descriptive qualitative analysis, examined through various social, anthropological, and environmental theories. These theories highlight the close relationship between social norms, ecological knowledge, and environmental sustainability. The results of the literature study indicate that various indigenous communities in Indonesia implement sustainable ecological systems through traditional conservation practices, such as the subak system in Bali, sasi for marine and terrestrial resources in Maluku, and prohibitions on indiscriminate tree cutting in Waerebo and among the Baduy community. This system is based on cultural and spiritual values that emphasize the balance between humans and nature. However, the continuity of this indigenous system faces challenges from modernization, the exploitation of natural resources, as well as changes in land use policies and marine environmental pollution. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of legal protection and inclusive policies that recognize the rights of indigenous communities in environmental management. Integrating local wisdom with modern conservation policies is a strategic step towards achieving sustainable development based on the participation of indigenous communities. This study contribute to social cultural and environment areas.A tanulmány azt vizsgálja, hogy Indonézia őshonos közösségei milyen fontos szerepet játszanak a környezetgazdálkodásban, a generációkon átörökített helyi bölcsesség alapján. A kutatás módszere leíró kvalitatív vizsgálat. A helyi bölcsesség integrálása a modern természetvédelmi politikákba stratégiai lépést jelent a fenntartható fejlődés elérése érdekében, az őshonos közösségek részvételére alapozva. A kutatás hozzájárul a társadalmi, kulturális és környezeti tudományok területének megértéséhez
