Is metonymy really more regular than metaphor? A first investigation into the French Lexicon
Regular polysemy is considered more intrinsically linked to metonymy than to metaphor in both linguistic and psycholinguistic literature. Yet, on the one hand, metonymy exhibits varying degrees of regularity, and on the other hand, metaphor is also subject to polysemic regularity. This paper aims to assess the extent to which metonymy and metaphor exhibit regularity in the lexicon. Based on the analysis of lexicographic descriptions of a sample of nearly 3,000 French nouns, this study compares the regularity of polysemy patterns—defined as recurring sense alternations—within the two types of figures. While the findings confirm theoretical assumptions by identifying more regular metonymic patterns than regular metaphoric ones, they reveal, on average, no significant difference between metonymy and metaphor in terms of regularity. The resulting dataset is publicly available to allow further exploration of how regular polysemy emerges in the lexicon and its correlation with lexical figures
Poskakali! « Filons ! » / « Assez couru !
Russian verbs capable of expressing spatial displacement (among other meanings) allow the prefix po- to express two contradictory meanings: inchoation (onset of action: ‘Let’s go!’) and delimitation (temporal bounding: ‘Enough running!’). This article explores the conditions triggering this duality, focusing on the grammatical category of so-called “verbs of motion”. Within this small set, which contrasts determinate and indeterminate verbs, the former tendentially select the inchoative meaning, while the latter select the delimitative meaning. The analysis is carried out using the example of the determinate verb (po)nesti and the indeterminate (po)nosit′, with extension to non-motion uses.
The core argument is that determinate verbs – like other motion-capable verbs – rely on an unstable term a, whereas indeterminate verbs, as products of a morphological derivation process, operate on the feature that distinguishes verbs within this category: the mechanism creating this instability. In the case of nesti/nosit′, this involves a contingently defined locator (e.g., a “carrier”). Consequently, po- prefixed to determinate verbs targets the existence of a, while with indeterminate verbs, it modifies the properties of the “carrier”. For verbs outside the determinate/indeterminate opposition, the ambiguity stems directly from the verbal base’s interpretation, generating specific semantic effects.Russian verbs capable of expressing spatial displacement (among other meanings) allow the prefix po- to express two contradictory meanings: inchoation (onset of action: ‘Let’s go!’) and delimitation (temporal bounding: ‘Enough running!’).
This study examines the representation of the Afro-Polish subject in the literary works of Emmanuel Dongala and Rita Dove, with a focus on ontological identification and the humanistic conception of the subject. These two notions serve as analytical frameworks for exploring the portrayal of the Afro-Polish figure in Dongala’s novel, La Sonate à Bridgetower: Sonata Mulattica (2017), where Bridgetower’s journey becomes a lens through which questions of freedom are interrogated. Simultaneously, Dove’s poetry collection, Sonata Mulattica (2009), underscores the themes of hope and the liberating power of music in Bridgetower’s life, expanding the discourse to a broader European context, encompassing England and France. In both narratives, Bridgetower emerges as a unique embodiment of Afro-Polish humanism in 18th-century Europe, while also highlighting contemporary issues of racial discrimination and the struggle for social acceptance. Stosuje obie te koncepcje do analizy reprezentacji afro-polskiego podmiotu w powieści "La Sonate à Bridgetower: Sonata Mulattica" (2017) Emmanuela Dongali, uczyniając tę reprezentację źródłem pytania o wolność. Równocześnie poezja Rity Dove w "Sonata Mulattica" (2010) podkreśla nadzieję i wyzwalającą moc muzyki w podróży Bridgetowera, poszerzając tym samym perspektywę na poziomie europejskim, zwłaszcza obejmując Anglię i Francję. W obu opowieściach postać Bridgetowera uosabia nowy afro-polski humanizm w XVIII-wiecznej Europie, podkreślając jednocześnie współczesne wyzwania dyskryminacji i dążenia do społecznego akceptacji
Cyfrowe edytorstwo naukowe w stronę infrastruktury
Digital scholarly editing is a rapidly growing field that aims to produce and make available in a digital environment scholarly texts. It requires an interdisciplinary approach, combining traditional philological methods with modern technologies such as XML markup language and the TEI practice. The transfer of texts from manuscript and printed form to digital form involves deep remediation, data modelling and adaptation for interactive presentation. Digital editions not only enable novel ways of text analysis but also increase the accessibility and functionality of scholarly editions. The development of this field opens up new perspectives for literature research and scholarly editing. Various projects are underway in Poland, including the scholarly edition of the writings of Piotr Skarga and the Jagiellonian Digital Platform. The key challenges are funding, long-term maintenance of resources and formalisation of publication procedures. W Polsce realizowane są różne projekty, m.in. Naukowa edycja pism Piotra Skargi czy Jagiellońska Platforma Cyfrowa. Kluczowe wyzwania to finansowanie, długoterminowe utrzymanie zasobów oraz formalizacja procedur publikacyjnych

The article presents the figure of Mieczysław Weinberg, a composer of Jewish roots, who was born in Poland, but lived in the Soviet Union, and his peculiar approach to Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s legacy. The Idiot, opera based on the eponymous novel by Dostoyevsky, was one of the greatest works that was performed on stage during the composer\u27s lifetime. The inevitable question is: why Dostoyevsky\u27s anti-Jewish and anti-Polish views remain unnoticed by Weinberg. This article is an attempt to understand this important issue by analyzing the facts of the composer’s biography, his works, and the historical realities.W artykule zostaje przedstawiona postać Mieczysława Wajnberga, kompozytora o żydowskich korzeniach, urodzonego w Polsce, a zamieszkałego w Związku Radzieckim oraz jego osobliwe podejście do spuścizny Fiodora Dostojewskiego.
Mobile Borders in Contemporary Francophone Canadian Literature
This article explores how contemporary Québécois and Francophone Canadian writers think about the return to a homeland linked to identity transformation, border crossing, and mobility. Drawing from the theories of the mobility turn and using Rosi Braidotti’s notion of “nomadism,” I show how this return (physical or imaginary) generates both conflict and resilience. My hypothesis is that analyzing a fictional text through the lens of mobility allows for new approaches to identity formation and contributes to renewing literary forms
Fostering Positive Language Education Practices: Exploring the Synergy of Institutional Practices and Learner Characteristics
The following quantitative study investigates the impact of institutional practices at the State University of Applied Sciences in Przemyśl on the language education of Generation Z students. By examining their educational preferences and characteristics, the research explores how these practices foster positive language learning experiences. A questionnaire was used to assess key aspects, including student motivation, learning environments and alignment of study programs with personal and career goals. Findings indicate that supportive institutional practices, personalised teaching methods and an appreciation for diversity enhance the effectiveness of English language classes. The study also highlights significant differences in satisfaction levels between undergraduate and graduate students. The research offers insights into the interplay between institutional practices and student needs. The study underscores the necessity for a dynamic and responsive educational environment that aligns with contemporary student expectations. Future research should aim to validate these findings across diverse student populations and further investigate the factors influencing language education outcomes
