Hazardous elements in urban cemeteries and possible architectural design solutions for a more sustainable environment

    No full text
The general objective of this study is to identify the presence of hazardous elements in the soils of five urban cemeteries in the city of Passo Fundo, in southern Brazil, and to design solutions (architecturally) for future cemeteries to be more sustainable by mitigating toxicological risks to the population residing in the area. A total of 250 soil samples were obtained from points within the cemeteries and in areas surrounding the two oldest cemeteries at a distance of up to 400 m. Twelve architects who design cemeteries primarily focused on sustainability were interviewed, and presented their suggestions for sustainable urban cemetery design. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) computer modeling system was utilized to present a visual representation of suggested architectural features by these architects. The concentration of Pb in the vicinity of cemeteries deserves special attention, as concentrations of this neurotoxin exceed the federal limits set by Brazil. Soil Pb values were found to exceed the limit of 72 mg kg−1 up to a distance of 400 m from the walls of cemeteries A and B, indicating the presence of a danger to human health even at greater distances. This manuscript highlights construction features that enable future burial structures to adequately mitigate the very real problem of contaminants entering the environment from current cemetery design. Two-thirds of the technicians interviewed for this manuscript, each of whom specialize in Brazilian cemetery design, highlighted the importance of revitalizing urban vegetation both when constructing and revitalizing urban vertical cemeteries

A literature survey on electrical-current-assisted friction stir welding

    No full text
Electrical-current-assisted friction stir welding (EA-FSW) is a procedure developed for the joining of similar and dissimilar materials. EA-FSW is a newly invented solid-state process to increase welded components’ efficacy in various applications, such as marine structures. EA-FSW joints have investigated the dissimilar joints on aluminum–magnesium, aluminum–steel, and polymer-to-steel. Similar joints have been performed on aluminum, magnesium, and steel. The main parameters that affect the temperature of the nugget in EA-FSW are electrical current and tool rotational velocity. This review paper presents the fundamental principle of EA-FSW, its processes mechanism, and various types of tools, and discusses the different joints that EA-FSW welded. The effect of electrical current on the quality of similar and dissimilar joints is discussed. The simulation process and detailed modeling of the EA-FSW process are discussed in the last section

    No full text
The present research is an exercise of perceptive analysis about the city of Barranquilla in its current and past times, from the elements that condition the configuration of the image and collective imaginaries about the city. Through an Urban Drift that results from the structural and historical analysis of the city, aspects that are not normally mapped, nor systematized, but that are so common and permanent in the daily life of the city's citizens and that facilitate social dynamics are investigated, economic, cultural, etc. The City smells, sounds, tastes, looks and touches, and with it creates and recreates its image and its imaginaries. This perceptive dimension serves to understand and order a vision from the prospective in terms of the progress, growth and future development of the city. This research is not a conventional city diagnosis, it is instead an exercise in sensitive mapping, rereading the city from the elements that make up the space planes and make part of its urban landscape, from the subjective standpoint, the objective positions on what consolidates the bases of the present city, anticipating the future city.Lista de Figuras 9 -- Introducción 12 -- Objetivos 14 -- Objetivos Específicos 14 -- Metodología 15 -- Espacio Urbano de Barranquilla 17 -- La formación del territorio 17 -- Escala de Tiempo de la Ciudad De Barranquilla 17 -- La imagen de la Ciudad 33 -- El estar 34 -- El pasar 34 -- Los Tres Planos Del Espacio Urbano En Barranquilla 36 -- La Ciudadanía Barranquillera 46 -- Sobre El Espacio Público 50 -- La Deriva 58 -- Definición de la Deriva Urbana 58 -- Definición de la Deriva y Su Trayecto 59 -- La Deriva Urbana 88 -- Sección 1. No full text
In the current competitive context, innovation has become a necessity, to the point that it seems that no company can survive without developing innovation processes. One of the great concerns of small and medium-sized companies is about the investment of resources in innovation activities and their success. Therefore, this article analyzes the influence of different innovation activities performed by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Colombian Caribbean region on their product innovation outcomes and thereby provides a solid groundwork for the design of innovation strategies. To achieve this objective, a data collection instrument was first validated in 56 SMEs, followed by the application of a reflective measurement model with convergent validity analysis. The results of the model application revealed that investment in Research and Development (R&D) and innovation, knowledge transfer, technology adoption, and financial aspects explain to a greater extent the introduction of new products to the market

Introducing the effective features using the particle swarm optimization algorithm to increase accuracy in determining the volume percentages of three-phase flows

    No full text
What is presented in this research is an intelligent system for detecting the volume percentage of three-phase fluids passing through oil pipes. The structure of the detection system consists of an X-ray tube, a Pyrex galss pipe, and two sodium iodide detectors. A three-phase fluid of water, gas, and oil has been simulated inside the pipe in two flow regimes, annular and stratified. Different volume percentages from 10 to 80% are considered for each phase. After producing and emitting X-rays from the source and passing through the pipe containing a three-phase fluid, the intensity of photons is recorded by two detectors. The simulation is introduced by a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code. After the implementation of all flow regimes in different volume percentages, the signals recorded by the detectors were recorded and labeled. Three frequency characteristics and five wavelet transform characteristics were extracted from the received signals of each detector, which were collected in a total of 16 characteristics from each test. The feature selection system based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was applied to determine the best combination of extracted features. The result was the introduction of seven features as the best features to determine volume percentages. The introduced characteristics were considered as the input of a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, whose structure had seven input neurons (selected characteristics) and two output neurons (volume percentage of gas and water). The highest error obtained in determining volume percentages was equal to 0.13 as MSE, a low error compared with previous works. Using the PSO algorithm to select the most optimal features, the current research’s accuracy in determining volume percentages has significantly increased
