Introduction and aim. With the development of transportation facilities and options, people can now travel easily. With women having a greater presence in the workforce, pregnant women can work until the eighth week before childbirth. This study was conducted to examine the behaviors of pregnant women regarding travel. Material and methods. The data for this cross-sectional and descriptive study were collected from 519 pregnant women who voluntarily participated in the research and met the research criteria. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24 software package. Results. The average age of the participating pregnant women was 27.49±0.17, with 63.8% residing in urban areas, 74.8% be ing primiparous, and 47.6% being in the third trimester of pregnancy. A decrease in travel and car usage during pregnancy. The use of bus, train/tram/metro, taxi, bicycle/scooter, and motorcycle decreased during pregnancy, while use of car, plane, and ship/ferry increased. 81.9% of women always wore a seat belt during pregnancy. There was a statistically significant difference between the educational level of women and their car usage (p<0.005). It was found that women wore seat belts more frequently in the third trimester. As the number of pregnancies increased, the frequency of seat belt usage decreased. Conclusion. A decrease in the frequency of travel was observed among women during pregnancy. The levels of seat belt usage and correct seat belt fastening were unsatisfactory

Introduction and aim. Corrosive strictures of the upper cervical esophagus and hypopharynx are hard to treat in the operating room because there is a high chance of aspiration during swallowing after a high-up or proximal esophageal anastomosis. In this cases, we aimed to evaluate the role of intraoperative dilatation of the proximal hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal stumps during surgery. Material and methods. Patients who underwent surgery and had upper cervical esophageal and hypopharyngeal strictures from corrosive substance ingestion were included. Results. Out of total 27 patients, 10 had a cricopharyngeal or proximal cervical esophageal stricture with a long segment tho racic esophageal stricture that was treated with intra-operative dilatation (IOD) of the proximal hypopharyngeal stump. IOD was done in two cases with Hegar’s dilator and in three cases with wire-guided Savary Gillard dilators. In 74% (20/27) of the cases, the colon was frequently used as an esophageal substitute, while the stomach was only used in 10 cases. On follow-up, none of them developed repeated aspirations or required a tracheotomy. Conclusion. IOD of the proximal hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal stumps during surgery for corrosive upper cervi cal esophageal or cricopharyngeal strictures helps to save the proximal stump and avoid frequent hospital stays and multiple surgeries

Introduction and aim. The period immediately after leaving the hospital is known as the transition home, which presents a critical time for parents to take on all the responsibilities and care of a child without the support of the hospital environment. The purpose of this study is to culturally adapt the Pediatric Transition Experience Measure (P-TEM) instrument into Turkish and test its validity and reliability. Material and methods. We conducted this methodological study with parents of children who were discharged from the hospital between May 2021 and May 2022. We evaluated linguistic, content, construct, convergent validity, and internal consistency. Results. The P-TEM exhibited a two-factor structure and accounted for 65% of the overall variability. The internal consistency reliability for the transition preparation and transition support subdimensions was 0.779 and 0.793, respectively, while the total measure had a reliability of 0.831. The item-total correlations for the P-TEM ranged from 0.493 to 0.671. Parents who received the highest P-TEM scores experienced a 5.1-point improvement (95% confidence interval: 1.7 to 8.6) in their satisfaction with healthcare services, which was greater than that of parents who reported lower P-TEM scores. Conclusion. It is worth noting that the P-TEM has been validated and has high reliability in Türkiye

Introduction and aim. Violation in the salivary glands will inevitably cause changes in periodontium, and periodontitis can disrupt the functioning of the salivary glands. The purpose of the work is to evaluate changes in NO-synthase and arginase activities, pro- and antioxidant balance in rat salivary glands and soft periodontal tissues during administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and water avoidance stress (WAS) modeling. Material and methods. The experiment was performed on 24 rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups: control, WAS, animals injected intraperitoneally with 0.4 μg/kg of bacterial LPS of Salmonella typhi, WAS+LPS. Results. Water avoidance stress led to decrease of inducible NO-synthase (iNOS) activity in salivary glands by 1.63 times, but decreased arginase activity by 1.15 times, superoxide production increased by 1.53 times, catalase activity decreased by 1.2 times, and malonic dialdehyde (MDA) increased by 1.19 times compared to the control. Lipopolysaccharide led to increase of constitutive NO-synthases (cNOS) activity in salivary glands by 1.48 times, but decreased arginase activity by 6.15 times, catalase activity increased by 2.6 times and superoxide dismutase activity decreased by 2.74 times, and MDA increased by 6.84 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress + LPS in salivary glands led to decrease of cNOS and arginase activity by 1.09 and 1.19 times, respectively, superoxide production increased by 1.88 times, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity decreased by 1.06 times and 1.34 times, respectively, and MDA increased by 2.44 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress led to increase of iNOS activity in periodontium by 1.44 times and arginase activity decreased by 1.37 times, superoxide production increased 1.32 times, catalase activity and superoxide dismutase activities decreased by 1.27 times and by 1.53 times, respectively, and MDA increased by 1.31 times compared to the control. Lipopolysaccharide led to increase of iNOS activity in the periodontium by 3.88 times, arginase activity decreased by 2.69 times, superoxide production increased 1.64 times, catalase activity increased by 4.32 times, and MDA increased by 4.51 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress + LPS in periodontium led to increase of iNOS and cNOS activities by 1.95 times and 1.53, respectively, arginase activity decreased by 1.39 times, superoxide production increased 1.66 times, catalase activity increased by 1.11 times, and MDA increased by 1.53 times compared to the control. Conclusion. The combination of LPS and WAS leads to changes in NO production and oxidative stress in salivary glands and the periodontium

    Get PDF
Introduction and aim. Glomus tumors represent benign neoplastic proliferations of the glomus body, an integral thermoregulatory component within the cutaneous microvasculature. Although they can manifest at various anatomical sites, they are predominantly observed in the subungual region. The tumors present as painful, firm, purplish, solitary nodules of the extremities, especially in the nail bed. They may be solitary or multiple; solitary lesions are encapsulated and most commonly subungual, while multiple tumors are unencapsulated and rarely subungual. Description of the case. Here, we present a case of multiple glomus tumors of the right hand in an 18-year-old female who presented with complaints of painful bluish discoloration of the right little finger for six years and progressive asymptomatic nodules on the right index finger for six months. A clinical examination revealed acute tenderness in both fingers. Love’s pin test and Hildreth’s test were positive. Excision of all lesions was done and sent for histopathology, which confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was symptom-free immediately following surgery. No nail deformities were noticed, and there was no recurrence of symptoms after one year of follow-up. Conclusion. The transungual approach is a safe and effective minimally invasive surgical technique for the treatment of symptomatic nail bed glomus tumors. It offers high success rates, promising cosmetic outcomes, and minimal complications. However, careful patient selection and meticulous surgical technique are essential to avoid potential nail deformities

Apart from that, the importance of skin care is stressed with a focus on usage appropriate to the condition and pregnancy-safe cosmetics. The influence of diet and physical activity on acne development is also underlined, as well as the significant association between acne and mental health. Conclusion. Dealing with acne during pregnancy might be difficult; however, there are effective and safe acne treatments suitable for pregnant women, along with various supportive approaches. Considering above, the authors highlight a holistic nature of acne management that includes not just medication but also procedural interventions, skin care practices, diet, physical activity, and psychological support

Neonatal lupus in an infant with maternal history of Jessner’s lymphocytic infiltrate

    Get PDF
Introduction and aim. Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is a rare autoimmune condition occurring in infants born to mothers with circulating antinuclear autoantibodies, particularly anti-Ro and anti-La. It presents with a characteristic cutaneous rash, which may be accompanied by systemic manifestations. The condition is mostly self-limited, although congenital heart block, if present, is irreversible. We report a rare case of cutaneous NLE in an infant of a mother with a prior history of Jessner’s lymphocytic infiltration of skin (JLIS), which is arguably a variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE). Description of the case. This report concerns an infant presenting with cutaneous manifestations of NLE, without any systemic involvement. The mother was asymptomatic, but had been previously diagnosed with JLIS. The diagnosis of NLE was made based on serological results from both the infantile and maternal blood. Conservative management was sufficient to achieve complete resolution. Conclusion. The case underscores the importance of considering NLE in infants presenting with annular rash, even in asymptomatic mothers with no known rheumatic disease. It also suggests that JLIS may belong to the same spectrum as LE, rather than being a separate entity. This warrants careful prenatal monitoring in mothers with a concurrent or prior diagnosis of JLIS

    Antonimy moralne Ericha Fromma

When interpreting reality, Erich Fromm used innovative words that were, at the same time, completely opposite in meaning, giving the chosen terms an antonymic quality. Moral antonyms include combinations such as authoritarian-humanistic religion, authoritarian-humanistic conscience, priests-prophets, man-wolf-sheep, authoritarian-heteronymous obedience, idolatry-faith, way of being, needs-desires, destructive-constructive needs, alienation-productivity, decay-growth syndrome and necrophilia-biophilia. By employing terms that serve as semantic counterweights, Fromm described the moral situation of both individuals and society.Erich Fromm interpretując rzeczywistość, posługiwał się słowami nowatorskimi, a jednocześnie całkowicie przeciwstawnymi, to znaczy nadającymi wybranemu terminowi przeciwne znaczenie. Do antonimów moralnych zaliczają się takie kombinacje, jak religia autorytarno-humanistyczna, sumienie autorytarno-humanistyczne, kapłani-prorocy, człowiek-wilk-owca, autorytarno-heteronimiczne posłuszeństwo, bałwochwalstwo-wiara, sposób bycia, potrzeby-pragnienia, potrzeby destrukcyjno-konstruktywne, alienacja-produktywność, zespół gnicia i wzrostu, nekrofilia-biofilia. Używając terminów, które same w sobie stanowią semantyczną przeciwwagę, Fromm opisał sytuację moralną człowieka i społeczeństwa

Zagrożony rozwój wschodniej Polski? – Rola uniwersytetów w absorpcji kapitału ludzkiego

    No full text
The aim of the article was to determine the role of universities in “attracting” human capital to selected geographical areas, as well as to indicate recommendations in the area of university marketing. Assuming that the most important factor in the sustainability of socio-economic development is human capital, it was concluded that the development of Polish regions will depend on the ability of universities to acquire human capital both from within a given voivodeship, and the ability to compete with other academic units for secondary school graduates in the country. The need for competition results directly from demographic changes, which lead to a reduction in the rate of population growth in regions. Spatially, on a theoretical basis, the studied entities will be the capitals of the voivodeships of eastern Poland, i.e. Olsztyn, Białystok, Lublin, Rzeszów. Due to their location, peripherality compared to the EU and Poland, and the level of socio-economic development, they are model examples of areas subject to the loss of human capital. During the work, a review of Polish and foreign-language literature was used to verify the assumption about the essence of higher education among the endogenous factors of regional development. Then, based on statistical studies, including: The Central Statistical Office and the relevant Ministries, the author compared research entities and the local government units in which they are located. Surveys and interviews allowed for the assessment of young people's mobility. It was found that universities play a key role in the absorption of human capital with a relatively high tendency to migrate. Additionally, recommendations were prepared regarding the scope of university promotion to meet the expectations of high school graduates as much as possible. W trakcie prac wykorzystano przegląd literatury polskiej i obcojęzycznej celem weryfikacji założenia o istocie edukacji wyższej wśród czynników endogenicznych rozwoju regionalnego. Następnie, na bazie opracowań statystycznych, m.in. Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego i właściwych ministerstw dokonano porównania podmiotów badawczych i JST, w których są zlokalizowane. Badaniaankietowe i wywiady pozwoliły na ocenę mobilności młodych osób. Stwierdzono, iż uniwersytety odgrywają kluczową rolę w zakresie absorpcji kapitału ludzkiego o relatywnie wysokiej skłonności do migracji. Ponadto przygotowano rekomendacje dotyczące zakresu promocji uczelni, tak by w jak najwyższym stopniu odpowiadały oczekiwaniom maturzystów
