This article highlights the significant contributions of neoscholastics from Galicia to Polish Catholic thought during the period 1900–1914. Thanks to the efforts of academic lecturers teaching Christian philosophy and theology at the three main intellectual centers of Galicia (Kraków, Lwów, and Przemyśl), discussions about the theory of evolution flourished during that period. The Jesuits played a key role, particularly through their periodical “Przegląd Powszechny” (“The Universal Review”), the most important forum for Catholic worldview debates during that period. The article identifies the most significant topics and highlights the interesting trend of “new apologetics”, which attempted to incorporate the latest scientific findings into Christian apologetics (Erich Wasmann, S.J.).W artykule ukazano szczególną rolę odgrywaną przez neoscholastyków z Galicji w obrębie polskiej myśli katolickiej w latach 1900–1914. Dzięki aktywności wykładowców akademickich związanych z nauczaniem filozofii chrześcijańskiej i teologii w trzech głównych ośrodkach intelektualnych Galicji (Kraków, Lwów, Przemyśl) rozwijały się ówczesne dyskusje nad teorią ewolucji. W artykule wyróżniono najważniejsze wątki zainteresowania i ukazano interesujący nurt „nowej apologetyki” będący próbą włączenia najnowszych wyników naukowych w obręb apologetyki chrześcijańskiej (Erich Wasmann SJ)

Stanisław I. Witkiewicz o obiektywizacji uczuć metafizycznych

The article presents Witkiewicz’s views on metaphysical feelings as a source of culture in its three manifestations: art, religion and philosophy. Metaphysical feelings are associated with the experience of vastness, randomness and monstrosity of existence. Culture serves as the objectification of these feelings, and the process of culture alleviates the tensions associated with cognition. The article argues that the total socialization of humanity is causing the decline of metaphysical culture, though the future of humanity remains unpredictable. Moreover, Witkiewicz is presented not as a consistent catastrophist.Artykuł prezentuje poglądy S.I.

The article presents literature dedicated to the music culture of the Galician Jews, especially those written by Polish and Ukrainian researchers. It lists their publications in chronological order and juxtaposes them with other, more general elaborations on the topic from the same period; this way it is tracking the changing ways of defining Jewish music and its place in the musicological systematics. Regarded as a folk music (synagogue song, folk song, and klezmer music), it was the subject of ethnomusicological research. After the foundation of Jewish art music, the genre was discussed in the framework of historical musicology. Then, discussing Galician Jews’ music and taking into consideration all its genres, where should we place them? Should we describe them as one of ‘the national narratives’ or as a part of Galician folk soundscape? What place does Jewish music occupy in the historical narration of Galician musical culture? Summing up, the article presents the literature dedicated to the Galician Jewish music in the context of general problems and methods used by Jewish music researchers and eventually leads us to a question about the new axes of principle narration on Jewish music culture in the contemporary musicology

In the late 19th and first third of the 20th century, thanks to the establishment of cultural and educational singing societies in Eastern Galicia, amateur choral performance experienced significant growth, laying the foundation for the development of professionalism in the Ukrainian milieu. These societies played a crucial role in preserving national identity amid complex socio-historical circumstances of cultural development. However, during the period of totalitarianism, the distortion of historical facts and cultural events relegated the activities of these organizations and their amateurgroups to the margins for a long time. With Ukraine’s independence, the opening of archives, and the interest of musicologists in the musical and choral life of Galicia, new and interesting facts have come to light. These pertain to the clarification of the founding dates of societies, the activities of conductors, the repertoire spectrum of choirs, their concert practices, periodical reviews, and more. These issues are explored in dissertations, monographs, textbooks, and articles by L. Kiyanovska, L. and T. Mazepa, L. Romaniuk, I. Bermes, M. Ferendovych, M. Izdebska-Novitska, R. Dudyk, N. Kobryn, L. Khanyk, N. Tolosnyak, M. Cherepanin, Y. Horak, O. Myronova, and others. Thus, in the new social reality, amidst the Russian war, the activities of Ukrainian choral societies founded over 100 years ago serve as a model to emulate. Today, choral performance should become a „weapon” to propel Ukrainian society forward, to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to integrate into the global cultural space, and to assert national identity, with culture playing a leading role among its priorities

The compositional creativity and musicological works of the modern Ukrainian composer, pedagogue, scientist and music-social activist Mykola Lastovetskyi demonstrate a relation with the socio-cultural needs of both the glocalized musical setting and the regional environment on the example of Drohobych, the city of Lviv region, with its developed cultural and artistic traditions and established musical infrastructure. The didactic orientation of a significant part of the artist’s compositional and musicological work, which appeared in the context of the pedagogical work of M. Lastovetskyi in two leading educational centers of the region – the Drohobych Musical Professional College named after V. Barvinskyi and the Drohobych State Pedagogical University named after I. Franko is noted. The didactic works of the artist include studies devoted to harmony, musical pedagogy, methods of musical education, music theory, analysis of musical forms, solfeggio, instrumental science, application of the latest technologies in the musical and educational process, etc. In general, most of M. Lastovetskyi’s works of, created in Drohobych, can be viewed through the prism of didactic intentions and social demands of the local socio-cultural environment. The composer received orders for the creation of compositions of a certain genre or direction both from the community of the city, church, theater, and from specific performers or teachers. The didactic orientation of the artist’s compositional and musicological work is not only related to his pedagogical activities and the functioning of the city’s musical and educational institutions, but more broadly, directly or indirectly, it reflects performing, touring-concert, competitive, festival, social-public, musical-publishing, cultural and organizational needs of the region

During the 19th century, the structure of the flute underwent significant and inevitable changes. Hundreds of famous musical masters devoted their lives to adapting the instrument to the new aesthetic needs of the Romantic era. The role and sound quality of the flute underwent a significant rethinking. Therefore, the inventors' search was reflected in the external and internal structure, on the attachment of superstructures, on the material from which the samples were made, etc. For several decades, the flute gets a completely new look and structure. Along with the change of the instrument, the change of the system of teaching and performance on the flute begins. The first years after Theobald Böhm's reform were most clearly and convincingly capable of reflecting the shock state of the industry's leading specialists, their mostly feverish efforts to reject, deny, glorify, use, „modernizeˮ or calmly accept the realities of the new professional life. So far, little attention has been paid in scientific research to the specifics of familiarization and the initial stages of mastering the newest tools in the provincial centers of Europe. Their experience can provide unusual and original facts for the analysis of individual phases of the professional crisis provoked by the reform and help form a holistic picture of the phenomenal event. The Lviv example vividly demonstrates, on the one hand, the original manifestations of the attitude towards the Munich sensation in the professional and amateur flute world and, on the other hand, some general trends for the process, refracted through the prism of Galician consciousness and mentality. The research uses information and facts that are made public for the first time

Galicyjskie Towarzystwo Muzyczne a kwestie tożsamości narodowej

With the intensification of national independence movements after the Spring of Nations of 1848, which induced stateless peoples to fight for independence, and protests against assimilation by the powers to which they belonged, nation-building processes in Galicia intensified, transforming various ethnic communities into self-conscious political and cultural organisms. The peculiarity of the nation-building processes and the formation of a modern Polish and Ukrainian national identity in Galicia in the nineteenth century lay in the fact that they were primarily the result of the deliberate activity of nationally conscious Polish and Ukrainian elites, the so-called awakening’ of the national spirit. They consciously not only shaped national identity, but also acted as organisers of socio-cultural life, using various means, methods and forms to implement a nation-building ideology in their own communities, allowing for national affirmation despite political non-existence. The active actions of various socio-cultural institutions, often headed by these “awakeners” of the national spirit, including musical societies, contributed to this. Music, musical culture, through musical societies, became an important stimulus for the formation of national identity, intensifying patriotic feelings and promoting national pro-state ideas. The national priorities of the stateless communities are reflected in the statutes of the music societies, manifested in the introduction of the native language into official use within the society, the more extensive representation of the national legacy and, at the same time, the inspiration of original contemporary creativity that would reflect the different modalities of national feelings. In this context, the Galician Music Society based in Lviv played a particularly important role. In the activities of the GMS, these national trends and strategies shaping the attitude of national identity acquired extraordinary expression and significance. In the first period of its activity until 1848, i.e. the “Spring of Nations”, the GMS followed the principles set by Western European societies, above all the Vienna Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. It carried out intensive concert, pedagogical and educational activities, caring for the aesthetic education of the public, constantly following contemporary trends and not using any national distinctions in its activities. However, this model of activity, after the landmark year 1848 for many nations in the Austrian Empire and Europe and the proclamation of Galician autonomy in 1867, was modified due to the intensification of nation-building processes. The external expression of the nationbuilding processes taking place at the GMS was the introduction of Polish as the official language of communication at the GMS, the consolidation of the Polish national orientation of development and support of native culture in a number of GTM documents, the national orientation of the repertoire combined with „Chopinocentrism” as a concentrated expression of Polish national consciousness in music, and the growing presence of a broad representation of Polish elites in the GMS management. Muzyka i kultura muzyczna poprzez działalność towarzystw muzycznych stały się ważnym bodźcem w kształtowaniu tożsamości narodowej, intensyfikując uczucia patriotyczne i upowszechniając idee narodowe o charakterze niepodległościowym. Narodowe priorytety wspólnot pozbawionych państwowości znalazły wyraz w statutach towarzystw muzycznych, przejawiając się we wprowadzaniu języka ojczystego do oficjalnego użytku wewnątrz stowarzyszenia, w coraz szerszej reprezentacji dziedzictwa narodowego, a zarazem w inspirowaniu oryginalnej współczesnej twórczości, która miała odzwierciedlać różne odcienie uczuć narodowych. W tym kontekście szczególną rolę odegrało Galicyjskie Towarzystwo Muzyczne z siedzibą we Lwowie. W działalności GTM tendencje i strategie narodowe, kształtujące postawy tożsamościowe, uzyskały wyjątkowy wyraz i znaczenie.

Music in Rzeszów, as in other cities and towns in Galicia, developed thanks to the initiatives of sensitive, creative individuals from the intelligentsia, with its characteristic multiculturalism reflecting the historical, political, and economic conditions of the time. Musical societies formed elite groups that influenced broad social circles, awakening within them spiritual and aesthetic needs in the fields of high culture, and creating ambitious programs of action in contact with significant cultural centers in Galicia and beyond. From today’s perspective, it is clear that these societies became the foundation for the organization of significant institutions and artistic ensembles, cultivating various fields of art, including music, in the uninterrupted cultural history of Poland, Europe, and the world.
